Quote:I don't know, being powerful, intelligent, and successful. Isn't writing her as all that, the opposite of sexist?I don't know if it's sexism, but one character who annoys me greatly is Emma Frost. There's something very Pamela Anderson about her that makes me just twitch. It seems she can only do her scheming while spilling from a white leather cup suit.
I'd say she wears what she can, because she can. She's not a shy, easily embarrassed teenage girl. She's a proud, take charge woman.
Remember...those who have it, flaunt it.
Twilight just isn't for everyone. But what some Feminist forget, is feminism isn't about woman being men. It's about women being treated as equals, and this means deciding for themself what they want. Sadly, that tends to go the way of "You have to be stuffy and take charge" instead of "It's your choice to strive to be the best stay at home mom/spouse or strive to be the the leader of corporate industry or strive to be whatever the hell you want to be."Quote:But I'm also annoyed by Edward Cullen, the 100 year old vampire madly in love with a teenager. That's a character from "girl's literature." I don't think of it as sexism so much as a characterization that's not meant for me.
And yes, you weren't the target audience of the series.
Yes they are. But society is currently in the trend of telling people what they can and cannot enjoy.Quote:So the question is, are (straight) men allowed to have their own literature? Or is the issue that what is essentially literature for straight males is promoted by culture as having mass appeal that it actually lacks? Loaded questions for sure. I was gay, read these comics, eventually stopped reading them, but not because I felt unwelcome.
Comparing it to something like the WWF professional wrestling, it just was what it was. Perhaps the only semi-insulting thing about it--and this isn't a comics thing exclusively--is that these books frequently preach about diversity and overcoming personal trauma, while presenting heroes who dodge the social categories that would put them in that exact situation. -
I love the concept of the set. However, I think I'd seriously changing some things around.
Jinx is okay.
Roulette, I'd do some serious reworking on this, or it's going to become something akin to SB. Looking at it, I'd hate to see it become a "ROULETTE ME NOW!"
Lucky Streak as an idea sounds good, but I can't say I care for it, because I hate having a power that I can't use while solo (it's one of the reasons I hate Sonic's target ally resistance debuff).
Fortuity I'd say turn into a toggle debuff. You have the first power as a click, give the Weapon Sets a break!
Snake Eyes, something interresting to do here (may not be possible) and another thought on how to give the weapon sets a break...targeted location TOGGLE! Be akin to Tar Patch, but it stays in place as long as it's toggled.
Serendipity, I'd personally like to see low level mez protection of the Mag 4 protection variety, but that might be OPed, so it wouldn't be bad as is.
Against the Odds, again reliant on a teammate to be used. :/
Backfire. Could be interresting.
Turn the Tables, meh...I see it's benefits, but the long recharge seems to make it not as useful, and really I think I'd like it more as a self toggle, that encourages getting into melee or staying back with a bunch of ranged types who need to stay close to the Corr/Def/MM/Troller. -
-
Hmmm...I think it could totally work, but people would have to see it as an alternate universe, fun show, rather than "OMG! You totally changed Batman!"
-
Are you using Power Sink as an offensive tool?
While it takes multiple uses (usually 2) I find Power Sink draining the enemy goes a long way in the survival. -
If you're not looking to get the stories of Praetoria, get as many people on the team as you can and go! 8 person team will have you flying through the levels.

Quote:I'd skip Quick Strike.I'm planning a KM/Shield Scrapper. I'm skipping Confront and Repulsing Torrent. I'd like to drop one more thing from the Primary, so I can get deep enough into the Fire Ancillary for Fireball. I'm taking all of the Secondary and my heart's pretty set on the other pool choices I have in mind. (CJ/Flight/Hasten/Whatever-from-Fighting-that-will-not-be-on-my-bar-anyway/Tough/Weave) Yes I know I could do without travel and yes I know I could benefit from a heal, but I also know what I like

So, if you could either make a case for what else is skippable, or convince me I don't want Fireball as much as I think I do, I'd appreciate your time. Thanks!
One of the best DPS strings is (maybe there's better and I don't know it)...
BB - SB - QS - BB - SB - CS - Repeat
Replacing QS with Focused Blast loses a bit of DPS, but is still great dps and allows you to keep the ranged attack (also it was easier on the RCH requirements).
That's what I would do anyways. And then you can keep Fireball for more AOE goodness. -
Quote:Only because you know it's a guy in a dressI find it pretty hard to see that thing as male, or even as a human being

If you had just seen the pictures without knowing the story, you would of thought it was a girl (with maybe possibly doubts on the last picture, as it's one of the few pictures where the face looks a bit more male).
For all they've done with Bridget (did I spell his name right...I dont recall!), most artwork looks like a flat chested female character.

I'd be more inclined to believe there was sexism in comics, if the subject of said story was a bon-bon eating, never got off their butt, lay about, but somehow still managed to look like a super model.
This goes for the men or women.
In superhero comics however, the main characters are VERY active individuals, who when they aren't out running across the rooftops, maintain an extensive physical workout routine.
One then might say "then the woman should look like body builders". Not at all. First off, not everyone even has the capability to have that type of build, no matter how hard they work out (barring steroid use), and this includes the men. Second off, even if they could, they'd have to do the right excersizes for that psysique.
Any "comicbooks are sexist" comments that come based off the look of the heroes I find to be the least thought out. It's a visual medium, and as Tony Daniel (my personal favorite comic artist) commented when asked why does he draw everyone looking good (paraphrasing here) "Drawing ugly is harder to do"
If those who complained about the looks of comic book characters worked out as much as it's implied that superheroes do, they'd find themselves with figures closer to those in comic books (for men it may be closer to Spider-Man vs Superman, but that's still a great figure
)
As for the story elements. Hmmm...maybe. But I'm a little less convinced. As the one female writer mentioned in her responce to a blog inwhich she was mentioned. I think it depends on the writer and what they're going for.
Lastly, if they truely felt this way, there's one true way to stop it all from happening. Don't buy the book!
It reminds me of the Howard Stern movie. If people wanted him off the air so bad, their best bet would of been to just shut him off, so they didn't count in the ratings.
Of course, if they didn't buy them to find these things they considered sexist, they'd have nothing to complain about.

Quote:As a general rule, I think it would depend on you power sets.Hi all,
It's only recently that I've started to play Redside and was looking at various AT's to roll. I was wondering from a damage perspective how do these two compare?
I'm only after a general rule of thumb.
A Fire/Cold Corr is going to do more damage than a Ice/Ice Dom for instance.
If memory serves, Fire/Fire/Ice Dom is the most damaging Dom, but I don't recall the most damaging Corr. -
I think there's a few flaws in the comparison...
Dark Melee/Shield vs Dual Blade/Willpower...the Primaries make a difference.
As you can't have a DB/Shield...I'd say one should compare DM/Shield vs DM/WP.
All things being equal in the funding, I'd likely give the nod to Shield. Without Shield Charge factored in, AAO is helping give you bigger hits, to take out the mobs faster.
Softcapped Defenses, +HP (True Grit + OwtS), some resists...backed up by Siphon Life.
The WP even with softcapped defenses, will have the greater Regen, but slightly lower exotic resists.
I think they'd both do just fine on surviving the 3/8 setting, but the Shielder will clear the map faster.
This is for the most part anyways. Where I find some differences...going up against enemies packed with +tohit. I find WP out survives Shielders a bit more in those situations, but it isn't always the case as Shielders like to kill things fast! So they may not have to worry so much about them.
At least WP is a bit more concept friendly \o/ -
Quote:o.O I've never considered the starting missions to be all OMG jaw dropping in AP or GC.Bull****.
Villains have to go to Mercy and decide between Kalinda or Burke. That's it. Oh wait I foprgot Veats. They get 1 mission then must choose between Kalinda or Burke.
Heroes on the other hand get to choose 1 of 10 initial contacts based on origin which are split between Atlas Park and Galaxy City. And if the players are making a Kheld they have complete storylines to follow depending on if they make a WS or a PB which is a hell of a lot more interesting than the unfinished crap VEATS got.
Is the Hero stuff old? Yes.
Is it better than the garbage Villains must suffer thru? HELL YES!!
The main reason people get bored with the same old starting missions heroside is because they refuse to start anywhere other than Atlas Park. That's a personal problem not a problem with the content.
And story wise, they're pretty much the same.
Now, I fully admit after that fact, there comes contacts that vary in low levels. Hollows or KR and at level 10 you can run the midnighters arc, which you might likely do at some point anyways. -
Quote:This is me right here. Every new toon I've made has been made in Praetoria since it's become an option.I will always open up a new toon in Praetoria. Why you ask? First and foremost, I just like the environment they way things are laid out, the detail in the buildings (and yes, they have windows) unlike some in lets say Steel Canyon that are solid brick on three sides..heh..heh. I actually find it easier to solo through a large majority of contacts there. As others have said, when you make a new toon, just don't pick Praetoria as your starting point. You can go Hero or Villain to start. You are not forced to pick Praetoria as you are not forced to watch a TV show you don't like. Just change the channel.

I'll even write up most of them as not being Praetorians but from paragon. I just like starting out in Praetoria more. -
They wouldn't need a partnership with them. There's been other Yo-yo wielding fighters in anime, the one that comes to mind is Sukaban Deka.
-
20 level Jail sentence? o.O
I have to solo most of the time in Praetoria, because on 8 person teams, I level so fast, I'm missing all the story. -
Quote:And getting the 2nd -Resist Proc into Sweeping Strikes, that's a chance at debuffing a target's Resistance to -60%.Invuln/DB has a lot of potential. Built properly it could conceivably solo a few AVs.
I suggest the following: Get an Achille's Heel:Chance for -Resistance proc into Ablating Strike as soon as possible (I put a level 10 one in it at level 7)
Make your attack chain Nimble Slash-Blinding Feint-Ablating Strike-Vengeful Slice-Sweeping Strike (the last 3 attacks are the Attack Vitals combo, which deals extra DoT damage to anything hit by Sweping Strike) It requires no global recharge, and you will be automatically applying 20% -res to one target, with a chance to apply 20% more. Due to the resistance debuff in Nimble Slash, and the chance to debuff in Ablating Strike that is probably one of the better chains a tank can run with Dual Blades, while also being the most economical. (unfortunately it doesn't apply to the other ATs, because only tankers get the automatic debuff in Nimble Slash)
Should be a fun ride. Have fun with it. -
Isn't the damage number for Mu Bolts wrong in Mids?
-
Quote:Exactly. But I get the feeling Sam was never going to see my point. For the record it is no less biased than saying that a swinging travel power without a visible anchor is a bad idea because you think it looks silly.
^
An avatar that looks like a normal man in a suit, running around on all fours like the Beast or Nightcrawler or Felica (from Dark Stalkers) without any sort of animal characteristics will look stupid (at least imo), but be made possible.
And anyone who says it won't happen is kidding themselves.
The very first day I expect to see hero/villain concepts that wouldn't, to be doing as such.

Quote:Oh I want these too!I want just the opposite. I'd like some long dresses (robes for men). I hate to use the competition as an example but if they could do it without clipping issues then we should be able to do it here.

I just figured the shorter should be very easy for them, as there wouldn't be the clipping to worry about. -
Quote:Yeah, in his civvie identity. Put on the tights, and you saw an athleticly built superhuman. That was one of the things that was so amazing about Spider-Man in his debut: he's just a scrawny little nerd. That was recaptured beautifully in the Ultimate Spider-Man series.
Was he made to look as muscled as other heroes? Nope. But he was well toned.

Disruptor Field has the wrong tag on it.
Hmmm...I'd rather see more Debuff in the set myself.
Not sure how it will hold over to have a Hold and a Stun in it that the trollers could stack with their Primary. -
Quote:I'd say what your seeing is more people using IO sets to cover their weaknesses. They die and the rest of the team kills her. The increase in other peoples builds are more than enough to compensate
Really? The Alpha Boost doesn't make this dramatic change in effects in a lot of people's builds.
what I have notced, is a lot more people also taking Leadership buffs, now that Fitness is free. I was on a TF today with 6 Manuevers and 6 Tactics going at once.
Let's not also forget that people could just be learning that, oh hey, I can do this or that.

Rambo: First Blood is a great movie, but not so sure I consider it action per se.
