Quote:Yup. Bad things happen to everyone in comics.

Quote:Hmmm..."1. (Objective) A female character is killed/maimed/tortured/r*ped etc. for the main purpose of eliciting a desired reaction from a male character."
Ms. Liberty is as (or more) likely the target of the provocation as States.
"2. (Subjective) I do not believe that the same death/maiming/torture/r*pe would have occurred had the female character been a male."
Offing Mister (not Mr.) Liberty would be likely to provoke hot-headed loose canon daughter Ms. Liberty as well. Mister Liberty wouldn't have had the Liberty Belt and have been just as vulnerable.
"If I dont think both parts are met, then I think it is just typical bad writing, not having to do with gender issues, specifically."
Neither part are met, so just it's just bad writing and not W[I|i]R.
If it was Statesman son versus his daughter, do you think it would trigger the same reaction from Statesman?
If it was Ms. Liberty's father versus her mother, do you think it would trigger the same reaction from Ms. Liberty?
If Statesman and Ms Liberty only close family member was male (and had magic running through the veins to go along with the story) do you think they would have killed him?
Since I think the same reaction would of happened if Miss Liberty was Mr Liberty, this isn't a case of fridging. This is a case of, Statesman only had one other relative alive besides Ms Liberty.
While she may of had a past in lore, it wasn't a character that anyone really knew about and never had a major part. She's more of a red shirt. An expendable character. -
Quote:Lvl 50 Gen ACC IO or ACC/MEZ HO or an ACC/RCH from a set the hold takes, is all that Char needs!Yo dude, this is something i've looked into as well especially when i had end issues and fire was burning blue bar!
Mu's damage is ok but i don't rate it, i also have unslotted char but it's a worthwhile price to pay for fireball imo.
For most scrappers, a hold just isnt needed. But it's good for the few things in game where stacking holds is needed (LGTF, Hami Raid), so good to have a bit of added ACC in it. -
Quote:I'd bet it is because it's a new rig. They need to cover the loses of creating that rig, and likely placed the Dog at such a price to do just that.I understand the fact it's an entire new rig and all that, but I STILL do not see development requiring that steep a price tag for a non-combat pet.
Anyone have the tag for the Mini VG HVAS passive pet? I'm pretty sure that wasn't much over 100 or so. But 500 is just too much just on principal.
Also, it's a one time purchase. So they're only going to make so much off of it and they know it. If this was per character, I'd understand saying OMG WTF, but this is per account.
to put it another way. They go to all this work to make something, that maybe a lot of people won't buy just because it's exactly that, a cosmetic option.
Look at people now who won't but costume pieces because they want it free, and won't pay money for pieces they admit they wish they had because it's purely cosmetic.
Also, eh, they did all that work for wings, and I can be off here admittedly, but they don't seem that popular of a character costume option. I'm actually quite curious as the raio between costumes on a character to wings.
I also can't be the only one annoyed by fighting with them. So that has people likely going against them. I came up with a character who's abilities turn the wings into a cape just because I couldnt stand fighting and jumping around with the wings. I state this part because that could easily mean others have 1 costume with wings, and then the other 4-5 without them.
Is the german shepherd really worth 500pts? Not likely to most people. Do they need to cover costs as much as possible, yes they do! -
Quote:The one flaw in your realism idea, is that the game is not setup, even story wise, for 1 person on the server.I'll say it, since people aren't angry enough about it yet.
There's absolutely no reason this needs to be a one-hand only piece that requires you to unlock it twice. The recipe or the emp purchase needs to give it for both hands.
I only have two DP toons, one which I don't play, and on the other I'd rather stick to classical guns. I have no intention of getting this gun. But I still don't like the precedent it sets. It's not a good idea and it doesn't need to happen.
Look, I know sometimes games try to put emphasis on realism. But if you really want this to be realistic, the gun should be non-colorable (which clearly it is by the picture). It needs to drop 100% to one person. And then after that, Maelstrom doesn't have a gun anymore. So there's only one gun on the entire server.
...
Yeah, that's a terrible idea. Yeah, realism is kind of stupid in video games. Realism sometimes needs to take a back seat to "having fun." In this case, there's nothing "fun" about having to acquire the unlock twice. There's no reason for it other than an arbitrary "it's more realistic" which still doesn't make any sense. So please throw away this idea, and just have the acquisition of the gun apply to both hands. Because all locking it to one hand is going to do is make tons of complaints over something that doesn't need to exist in the first place. It'll drive up the recipe prices and double the emp unlock cost. For no reason.
Recipes don't have to make perfect sense. I can already "craft" working wings to apply to my character. Just pretend I made my own extra gun after having the original in my hand. Pretend he drops two at a time because he obviously has a few dozen of them if he drops them all the time and still comes back with more. Don't lock this to one hand per recipe/purchase. You're just asking for trouble.
It's story and history is setup for a team of 8 (untill the trials) when it comes to any sort of story.
Yes, some of the basic story arcs mention other heroes, and yes the game assumes there are more than the 8 heroes, but the over all story is setup for a group of 8.
What? You think everyone discovered Hero One became a Rikti? For the TF stories to work at all, it means 8 heroes did it.
So one gun drop per server doesn't fit the realism angle, as that goes counter to how the story is setup. -

Quote:My suggestion. Pick any of them that gives added damage and works best with your concept.Yes, but...everyone has Reactive already. And the debuff in it has a stacking limit of 4 while the DoT has a stacking limit of 8. So, since so many people have Reactive it would be good to pick something that isn't Reactive. Of course, that balance of people might change now that there are more options. In any case, I see the -hp and toxic damage being more useful than -res and fire damage in a lot of PvE content (AVs being an exception because of the numbers.) The actual gameplay utility of the two powers is probably much closer than the numbers indicate on paper against a single hard target.
Of course could just pick any that fit the concept whether there's added damage or not, but for the point of view of "give more damage" Id say pick the concepty one.
If people go by that idea, they're likely to see less of an abundance of one over the other during trials (unless the trial is being run by a bunch of fire users of course, since you know, it's popular) -
Did it with an IOed WP Scrapper. Don't see why it wouldnt be possible.

Quote:Naaa. Don't have to farm 4/8 to run 4/8. Sometimes it's just fun to up the diff and go at it.I don't really ever say that I can solo +4x8 cause I think it's a pretty silly way to back up an argument.
But if I were to say it, it would definitely mean not dieing while doing it and specifying what enemy groups you were fighting and what kind of insps you used (if any) to make it possible.
I would also say your killing speed would be important as well, as saying you can solo on +4x8 is basically saying you consider X enemy group farmable with Y build, if you can't kill them consistantly fast there isn't much point to it.
If kill speed wasn't a factor you could make a Stone/SS tank, IO it out for pure survivability and only take Jab, sure you could probably solo many enemy groups at 4/8 and come out on top, but you're not going to be killing fast in any sense of the word. -
Quote:Oh yes. EPIC AT meaning EPIC storyline. Meaning, you start out on the EPIC story.I still think its dumb that they force this on players. They should just give a minor warning that you are missing part of the story and just let you switch sides fully knowing well you can switch back if you want to experience the full story. I just hate it when the devs cave into role-players.
Wow. Mind sharing what your smoking? -
As long as I have a way to make it on a level 1 (or level 2) I'm okay with this.

Quote:You said heroic deaths were cases of it too, as they made use of Superman using Supergirls death to further the character, the same with Elektra. While you and I are broadly on the same side here, that's not at all what I said, nor is that what the trope comes down to.
I don't know how you get that from what I said (or quoted).
Edit: There are a lot of tropes documented, and there sheer quantity makes some of them perhaps questionable variations on one another. I don't have a problem with this trope - I think it has enough examples where it fits to justify its existence. What I don't agree with is the automatic assumption that (a) the existence of the trope is direct evidence of sexism, in or out of comics, or (b) that any given occurrence of it automatically implies sexist tendencies (accidental or not) on the part of the author. I think its seeming prevalence in comics may be a symptom of the fact that comics are written predominantly for male readers primarily by male writers, leading to a predominance of male lead characters. Whether it's then intentional that this trope's plot element might resonate with that audience specifically, as a story element any use "fridging" is automatically going to be gender biased because male characters are most likely to be depicted as emotionally attached to female characters. Only depicting villains harming a hero's children would probably create stronger tension or hate, and most costumed crime fighters don't have kids.
WIR seems to be gails way of saying "women don't read comics because..." when it seems to me, people are reading less and less, and this is a medium generally (now a days anyways) considered for kids.
Which is likely why the reboots continue to happen. New audience the other generation is moving on! -
Quote:So what your saying is anything bad that happens to a female character is WIR when mentioned at all by any other character. On the contrary, these are examples of "WiR Syndrome", especially the example of Elektra, which had a distinct impact on Daredevil. (Supergirl's death's impact on Superman was partially muted because it happened in a cross-series mini-series that involved the destruction of nearly all parallel earth universes (implying uncounted billions dead) and the more explicit death of dozens of well-known costumed heroes.)
I don't understand where this notion that the trope only applies to crappy deaths comes from. From the Wikipedia entry on "WiR Syndrome" (with working citation link).
What this says to me is that examples of WiR Syndrome can indeed include dying a heroic death. What matters is that it's a woman, and that often the death serves to propel development of a male character with whom the female was associated. She can be taken out wimpering or go down fighting, it's still an example of this trope.
In that case, you're right. If they're going to have any female character in any continuity except their own, single universe, any and all female deaths are WIR!
Therefore it goes back to, WIR is the stupidest trope they ever thought of.
Batman has "died" or taken out of commission and it effected everyone. They also continue to mention it, when it happens.
Yup. people looking way to much into things trying to find problems in something where there is none then. -
On my DB/WP which is the only one outside of AE is the only character Ive gotten to +4/8 level, generally means every enemy group.
This does include the use of inspirations, though not generally temp powers, unless I happen to have like Iron Blade or Rune Blast available, so I use it for fun.
I keep bosses on, and AVs on.
For AVs, I always try to go into it with no inspiration use.
Some enemies will be easier than others. And it tends to require keeping an eye on the life bar alot more and possible running awa...I mean...tactical retreats (like trying to defeat Cims at 4/8 solo)
Generally, I like to run at about 2/8, which still has risks, but I can just let loose a lot more. -
An excuse to post my newest outfit!

The 5ft tall, Irish/Japanese, born in a womb with a view, BrandX! Dual Pistols (Match Compensators...ie...big pistols!), Dual Blades (Red Cap Daggers), soon to be Titan Weapons (Razor Sword), Martial Artist/Street Justice and all around Weapon Specialist (<_< No really, I've level the same toon to 50 with multiple weapon sets, I know...it's terrible of me
) Time Manipulator!

So is this like a mad lib?
Titan Weapons in the Paragon Market is STILL MISSING!
Seems to work like one.

Eh, no real interrest in buying it yet, maybe if I had a concept that warranted a german sheperd following them around.
The price is steep, but as a SG member said, "It's the first of it's kind" so they're likely trying to make sure they get the investment back, since there are players out there who don't buy the extras that do nothing for gameplay. -
Quote:I'd be willing to accept that answer IF the blades didn't have an obviously metal hilt.Betsy's awesome and all, but the fact is that anyone who wants to do something like this already has the tools available.
AT: Scrapper or Stalker
Primary: Broadsword or Katana or Energy Melee. For the former two, unlock the Vanguard weapon option and color is a nice glowy pink. For the latter...well it's already pink.
Secondary: Willpower or Energy Melee or Super Reflexes. Again, pink.
...and this is assuming you aren't happy with the already-available options of Mind/Psi Dominator or Psi/Mind blaster, or a recolored Energy Blast, etc.
No, you won't get the Psionic damage type but honestly...are you sure you'd want it? It's a detriment at least as often as it is an advantage. I would much rather the dev and art teams spent their time on other, more interesting stuff than implementing this set just to cater to a concept that can be done really well in a variety of ways already.
They could do this with all the swords then it works.
Claws can take Vanguard Claws and do this quite nicely already.
Then tack on the Psi Incarnate Interface and you have Psi Claws.
However, some people do want the actual psi damage component. Not to mention, have you ever done anything like that.
"What? Your energy melee isn't psi melee. You're concept is stupid and impossible and doesnt work within the frame of the game."
Of course you can put such people on ignore, but there are such people out there.

Quote:Or rather, costume invention recipes tend to be ill recieved by players.isn't this like.. the first NEW costume piece recipe added ever since they went live all those years ago? If you ask me that's a whole aspect of the Invention system they should have been fleshing out as much as the IO system itself has.. but it just kind of..sat there forgotten by everyone that didn't use Wings.
Basically, players don't like having to wait past character creator to have the costume they envision.
A bit less of a worry when it comes to some items, that they can just enter tutorial, claim and be done with after crafting, but wait longer than that? That's kinda suckie.
I made a new fire character specifically to use the new Flame decal, I know I didn't care for waiting till after tutorial to use it

Quote:Because Batman would of dodged it, duuuhBooster Gold?
Really?
In any case, are you saying Ice would have been the target regardless of what the editor said? Are there any male JLA members from that era that would have been better choices?
If the situation was "I am going to write a story about the death of a superheroine, Ice, and the impact on the rest of the JLA. I am going to have the Overmaster perform the deed. Any objections?" I could respect that.
This description sounds more like, "I am going to write a story where Overmaster kills off a member of the JLA. Who should it be?"
Of course, it would have been even better if Ice had died pulling a heroic sacrifice, or a mutual destruction with Overmaster, or something rather than "I fry you with a single bolt! Wait, why didn't I try that on Batman?"

Quote:If that's what stops a WIR from being a WIR, then I doubt most cases of WIR are WIR as most of those examples brought up, probably didn't have the creators going "Yes, I can create this character specifically to kill them off."Actually I'm pretty sure that the decision to kill off Kirk's son came well after TWoK was made. The movies were largely written by different people, so I don't think we can say David was introduced to be killed.
Miss Liberty, I highly doubt, was created to be killed off.

Quote:EA has a taunt aura. It's really unfortunate that Shield isn't an option, because playing a Scrapper without a taunt aura sucks, and playing a secondary without some form of offense also sucks. With that said I'd go /WP (or Invul if you don't like WP), cause everything else doesn't have a taunt aura and with all the AoE in Titan Weapons you will want a taunt aura.
