You can get to 12 in two runs at DFB, no matter what class you pick. You can get a Tank with Taunt to around 14-15 with three runs through DFB, decent armors already. That might be enough to tank for 2 blasters at 45 or so though. At 17 you can throw on kinetic Combats (tuned) drop in the two +3% Def Globals and have a seriously tough Tank with Taunt that could prob do the job unless they have the knob turned up high.
-
With an Elec/Elec/Mu Scrapper you can powerlevel yourself on any Freak map in AE. I assume you have cash? Or can buy Kinetic Combats on Paragon Market? Kin Cmbt, Reactive Armor, some LOTG love and you are near S/L def cap on an Elec. You can wade through Freaks until your eyes glaze over, they wont even get close to putting you down. I leveled myself from 48-50 in about an hour on Freaks with my Elec/Elec Scrap. I would think hopping off the DFB train around 22 and onto AE farm you could prob get to 40+ in less than a day. A hard day, but still. An Elec/Elec Brute would be stronger still, but I prefer burst Crit damage to Fury these days.

A bio should be private! You need help with that ask a doctor, not the boards!

I ran Brutes for years. I am now on a Elec/Elec/Mu Scrapper. I dont think it does quite as much AoE as a SS/FA Brute, but it does a lot. And it is very very survivable. (softcap S/L def, some purp sets, season to taste) I ran a SS/FA Brute for awhile, built for Recharge rather than armor, and he was crazy fun, but a little squishy.

I've actually got a similar thread going about Energy Melee. I percieve people are struggling to understand that I need a "neutral" non visual based set for my concepts. I LOVE the details the City Devs have created in Swords, Rifles, ice, Fie, Electricity, Dark. Martial Arts. But it is precisely because they have been so successful at creating these effects that I cannot use them for many of my concepts. I have been wanting to create a "Magneto" type of character, either as a Blaster or Scrapper. Not using Magnetism, but a golden/silver age type awesome individual whose powers are sort of backseat to thier personality. Magneto (besides the name) could have swapped in any type of power and you would not need to alter anything in any of his animations/stories. Magic, fundamental physics, psychic, it really played a back seat role to him being powerful, and his huge ego. But so many powersets in the City are defined by a weapon, or element. I seriously want more "white bread" choices like Energy sets, Super Strength, Willpower, etc.
-
SF? Staff? Not sure. Dark Melee would work well as you describe....except. Midnight Grasp. Oily tentacles gripping your opponent from the netherworld. You can color the entire set pink and make a neat pepto-bismol man, but you cannot get away with calling it Gold/Silver Age comic fighting. So far only Super Strength and Energy Melee match that to me. The reason they match is the exaggerated basic movements that fit comics well and true fighting poorly. And neither is available for Scrappers. The reason so many of the other sets fail to hit this goal is because the Devs succeeded so well in capturing claws, swords, electricity, and yes Dark Combat. (I am a big fan of White Wolf VtM, and Dark Melee nods to Obtenebration there make me quite happy...when I run demons, vamps, etc.) But when I have a concept for a villain...er, or hero, yes hero!... more defined by a personality than a power who happens to be a super, I need to be able to create it with a moderately competitive primary set that does not redefine the character. My Electricity Scrapper is defined by the power, he literally exudes an Electric Aura....

Good points all around but I am unsure the OP will understand what build strategy hair you might be splitting. I felt a little guilty for tossing out terms like Perma in my post without explaining, but I was already 4 graphs in lol.

Grats Eldorado. I need 6. I want lots more for like 4 characters, but I need six. And I got squat for a clear plan on how to get them.
Repeat Rage Rarg Rant here. -
Quote:Actually, Street Justice is Mixed Martial Arts/Okinawan style combat. Every animation screams it. The name clearly gives away it's origin. It is derived from "Street Fighting" which is the term used when you take classic martial arts, strip off all the katas/spituality/style and boil it down to brutal kinesiology of how to hurt someone really efficiently. Combine this with a few rules and brazilian jiu-jitsu and you have "Mixed Martial Arts" cage fighting. I watched a video once of Kyukushinkaikan world championships and they are almost move for move 2/3 of the Street Fighting set. From what I read from you so far, the only attack power I don't see that you have any particular problem with is Street Justice. I enjoy it on my scrapper & stalker. Give it a try. It cannot be mistaken for Martial Arts. It is almost like the fighting style Spiderman uses in a sense. Worth a shot Blue. It hits like a ton of bricks resulting in shattered bones too!
But, to make a long story short, they do not say "generic golden/silver age super combat" to me. Although when I do my "Iron Fist" clone I go right to them. -
I have no help to offer. I do want to thank you though. This will be my next experiment in looking for my ranged character.
-
Then my account is at the bottom of the priority heap. I am always pushed by teammates pets. Also, my lore pets "Polar lights" are like little walls I run into and have to back up to get around.
-
Thx all, especially Hopeling for the napkin math. Now I know what the average return is. I just gotta figure out how to lose the gremlin who jinxes me in Vegas before I roll these bones.
In a inevitable rant... Why cannot they just sell me the Catalyst at the Paragon Market straight up? Rant. Rage. Rarg. k, I think I'm done.... -
I have run Super Strength for many years. Hand Clap is skippable. Even if you have 3 extra power choices I would search high and low before taking Hand Clap. It is a very situational power that works against most brutes. (You need to be attacked to keep fury up) Also, sets like Willpower and Invulnerability need mobs close to create buffs.
For years I skipped the first tier melee attack, Jab, and still do sometimes. Jab is a good attack, but depending on your build it is droppable. It is a fast acting attack perfect for ATOs these days, so choose to fit your needs. I have some characters that use Hurl, some don't. Its a great attack, it is slow animation, it knocks flyers out of the air, its not for every character. I definitely take it when I have an extra power pick.
Taunt. I used to skip, back before Brute Fury was "re-worked" Now it is a must have for me to make sure I get my full share of agro at all times. Back in the day I would just run straight at the boss in the midst of ten guys and bask in a full Fury bar. But, ....no mas.
All others are Must Haves. Most for obvious reasons. Some of the best ST melee attacks in the game, the best PBAoE in the game, and Rage deserves special mention. It is the best self buff in the game, and the rest of the set is built around it. (meaning the damage they do was calculated to be using Rage) So, learn Rage and it's ins and outs.
RAGE In: Perfect damage boost lasts for 2 minutes. Out: Has a crash for 10 seconds. Mitigating the crash is your job. I "monitor" my damage bonus. Meaning open up your combat attributes, find damage bonus, right click monitor. Move the little window next to your attack tray. When that sucker turns -9990% and red you are officially in a rage crash. At that point you are doing no damage. Use the 10 seconds wisely. If you have "veteran attacks" like Sands of Mu or Blackwand or Nemesis Staff they do normal damage, since they are never buffed they are never debuffed. Use the time to look around the combat, make a plan, inspiration management (combining useless into good, using) reposition. Taunt, that still works. There is no way to avoid the damage nerf, so learn to make the best of it.
The "Rage Crash" also jacks your defense down. This can be avoided. You need to get Rage "Perma" If you "Rage Crash" while another instance of Rage is up you are not subject to Defense Debuff. You still suffer -damage. Get Rage Perma ASAP. In a related bit of goodness When you have Rage double stacked.....your damage bonus DOUBLES. You hit like a truck going downhill.
Good luck, have fun. Smash! -
Okay. I think I know the two current ways. Buy Super Packs and run Incarnate Trials. I hear that in i22 they will drop randomly in, er any?, 50 content?
My question is two-fold.
1) What is a amount of Super Packs necessary to buy to have a very good chance of getting 6 Catalysts?
2) What is the drop rate in Incarnate Trials. I personally have run a huge amount of trials this week, and while richer for it I have received no Catalyst. -
True. But I got a whole box of 2 cent pieces here and thought I would throw one out.
The one that really bother me (pushing that is) is the civilians. The first time my Huge "Super Tanker Man" was pushed slowly out of the way by a secretary walking down the street I was like WTF? Very illusion breaking. But I understand that that kind of stuff is so hard coded into the game it just IS always going to be there. So, even though that bother me a thousand times more than the door jostling I know there is nothing beyond a ground up recoding of the entire game that will fix that. Sigh. THis is related to the very real combat problem of having "pets" block you from dorrs/targets/knock you places. Because "pets" have position priority over players. -
Quote:Not for me Pine, those glowing hands scream "Super". These days you can color a lot of that away by neutral it out. I am fine (even want) "Super". What is limiting is swords, mallets, really weapons of any kind. Also, Electricity effects. All of these things, I am glad they are in the game. When I need a Sword wielder for a concept, yes, it is fully supported. But, I need an option that is not defined by its Primary/Secondary as well. Willpower is my go to Secondary for this. Super Strength has been my Primary, but after five years I am finally getting tired of it. Also, I am finally starting to run Scrappers. So... The 50 that is my current main is an Elec/Elec Scrapper. But Electricity effects are so well done that they walk on any other concept. I had to pick Mu for his Epic for instance. And of course his lightning is red. I personally have nothing else for Elec. The toon is insanely powerful, and I am happy with it. But I still need a white bread Scrapper primary power option that won't conflict with my other 9999 concepts.Isn't EM's Glowing hands concept breaking in most cases?
Go with MA, use some punches + Boxing + Air Superiority + Flurry.
The martial arts thing to me is a non starter. It is as defined as Electricity or a Sword. -
Hand to the sky, this is the truth. I got 3 yesterday. 2 Grav Anchors and a Coercive. Since I am working on 2 Doms for my roster this is very good timing indeed! I ran a lot of content yesterday, Lam, Keyes, UG, ITF, Synapse, Sis Psyche, another LAM and a BAF. May have left something out, trying to remember. I think the first dropped on the UG and two on the ITF. All dropped for the same character, that I ran all yesterday.
edit, TPN was what I left out! Missed getting a MoM, but ah well. -
I have never understood this in the Cities. Your posts make perfect sense, that is not my problem. My problem is the lack of planning that went into the design. Before anyone starts talking about "programming limits" let me be extremely clear. My first SG was a big deal to me. I recruited non-stop for months. We started small of course, but grew quickly. This was back when 75 was the SG cap, although during my tenure as SG leader it went to 150, woot! When I put in the hospital as fast as I could I got 4 (Four) Resurrection platforms in it. You see what I did there? Four for 150 people. The Devs leave every portal into a zone train, mission door, ouro portal with 1 (One) spot to stand. I am planning for 150 peeps and I put in 4. There are planning for everybody that plays the game and they put One. Check this little plan. Most door missions are maxed at 8, right? So, you slot in 8 spots to stand inside the door, like the Star Trek teleporters, and everyone has a spot. Use the same design everywhere, and you have most of these problems solved. Not all, but most.

Quote:you are right, if I look for the negative I will find it. But I think you misunderstand my motivations for the entire process. I do not want "Blue Centurions set" I do not want "The best Melee set ever". I want a "Vanilla White Bread" set that i can use to wrap my endless character concepts in. Elec Melee is a good non weapon set. But it is Chocolate. It has a very distict Electric "Chocolate" overiding presence on the concept.Blue. No matter what happens, if you look for the negative you will find it.
If the developers made a melee set called Blue Centurion's Melee set, you would probably complain that they forgot the underscore in your name. If some one insists on playing a concept character, they HAVE to make concessions, simply because they themselves have limited themselves to that concept.
An analogy that came to mind is some one choosing to be vegan. Is choosing to be a vegan a bad idea? No, of course not. However, because you are limiting yourself to a non animal product diet, you have cannot expect the world to cater to your internal decision. You can no longer eat gummie bears (heh, ever wonder where gelatin came from?), hamburgers, ice cream or just about any baked good (eggs and or milk). Sure, there are some vegan burgers, ice cream and baked goods, but they don't quite taste the same and sometimes taste just awefull. But that is something you CHOSE to do.
Same is true if you decide to be a non weapon super hero. You have personally limited yourself, and must make choices within that bound. Stop complaining that the Mc Donald's isn't making a vegan burger, go make your own, or find a place that does. Otherwise, abandon your concept and enjoy meat again. YAY BACON!
Take Lore pets. I did some research into them before I picked for my Elec Scrap. If you look on Wiki and in some threads they talk about the best damage dealers against pylons, etc. Guess what I picked? Polar Lights. Near the middle/bottom of the list. But I chose them because they will fade into the background and let my concept come out.
This is what I want for a melee set. Something that will not overwrite my character concept like a Roman Lore pet. I want something that will let my costume, my name, my concept come through and not be my concept, with a sword, and roman helpers. Even if it is not "The best" set. I do hate that Energy Melee damages you, it is just stupid. But I think the Rage crash in SS is stupid too, and have run that thing as my go-to set for almost five years. If they will port EM to Scrap as-is I would run it today. I would still complain about the tier 9, but, ya know thats just me. -
Quote:Heh, yeah. I am learning, but it is a slow process. I am kind of impatient and not real social by nature. I am trying to bring up points that I think are relevant. I am trying to figure a way to make my points without alienating peeps, but as you can see I am still struggling. I am learning from a friend that teaches Myers-Briggs how to change the way I interact. But my Snarky nature still comes out in posts. I do actually appreciate the dialogue of (almost) everyone who joins in the threads, but I need to find a non combatative way to communicate when I feel a point is missed.Blue, I've noticed that you do have smart things to say, sometimes, but most of the posts you start are... troll-ish, just to stir up trouble. This one did have an honest question to it, but you let the bad habit loose in your first line and other troll-ish people jumped on it.
<Edit> I see, now, that you are talking Scrapper sets - of which Energy Melee is not one. Nor is Super Strength. So you want 'weaponless' Scrapper sets? But, I see you skipped Martial Arts in your list, which is very like Super Strength... So I don't understand what your problem is. There are three styles of 'martial arts' in the game already!Fireheart
In this case it was a shout out about some Necro threads a few months ago. The Devs stated that "Energy Melee was being looked at" One Necro thread has been revived slightly in the Brutes forum, but there is no real new info in it. We are all waiting. I do wish Scrappers had one more non-weapon primary. I have a very built up Elec/Elec, but I have more than one concept in my head by far. I do not love Elec, but I can make a great character bent around the sets. Once.
With Super Strength or Energy Melee, even though both have things I would change, they are animation nuetral enough to where I can put many different character concepts around them. The Devs should realize that the character design process is integral to much of what some of us do in the game, and give us a few non intrusive generic power set options that we can build many concepts around.
Edit. Martial Arts is highly intrusive and non generic. It screams non "Super" combat in every animation. -
Long as this thing keeps bobbing up Necro I will say I am still searching for my ranged toon. The concept shifts to try to find the right thing, I get close, and experiment, and.... yeah. Dark Energy is okay, where I left it with Blasters. But after coming back to it I realize the KB is just not gonna work. I have been trying a Psi/Mental Dom, not sure I like that either. I may try a medium range build of Fire/Psi Blaster, but am unsure on it. In truth, I may not be cut out for the squishy lifestyle, even though my Blasting is getting more proficient. I have been having good luck on a Elec/Elec/Mu Scrapper and can rain down PBAoE destruction and take whatever comes at me. It still leaves a void where my ranged concept is though. I will let the ideas cool and percolate as I badge on my main for awhile.

Quote:This is a good rebuttal. Energy Melee is "being looked at" by the Devs. Whatever that means. One thing it means is they are not ecstatic with it either.Energy melee should be improved if it is underperforming just because it is underperforming.
It shouldn't be improved just because there is desire from a player(s?) to create a melee set that isn't-martial-arts-based-and-doesn't-possibly-use-chunks-of-rocks-flames-or-ice-in-the-shape-of-weapons-and-doesn't-use-dark-just-because and isn't the exact set that you are asking for, super strength, because you've already played it a lot since it fits your amazingly narrow precepts.
Good luck but your premise is basically "we need some good super strength clones" which I don't particularly agree with.
But this is a Superhero RPG. My precept is narrow. Amazingly narrow? Only if you think my desire for sets that mimic Super combat is narrow. I am glad that there are many weapon sets out there. It gives many options to people who have weapon concepts. But there is a lot of players whose concepts are non weapon.
And lets talk about Energy Melee and Super Strength. Neither are available to Scrappers.
My main character right now is an Elec/Elec Scrapper. He is very strong, and I am very happw with him. But Electricity is a very specific type of power, very obvious. Only with Super Strength and Energy do you come close to the rock-em sock-em Super combats of the glory days of comics, where some people where powerful not because of a sword, or fire, or electricity, but because of (insert origin here) and to create that I need a nuetral background like Super Strength or Energy. Which is not available to Scrappers, and not all my concepts are Brutes.
Narrow? Hardly. To me it is a very wide area that was completely missed in development. -
Quote:Really. Okay. Here we go.Fire Melee: Don't have to use swords, Scortch -> Cremate -> Incinerate is a great attack chain.
Ice Melee: Again, don't need swords.
Stone Melee: Dont need to use mallet.
Street Justice is not martial artistic
Dark Melee has 3 AoEs and you can even grab fire ball since Dark Consumption cures endurance problems.
Kinetic Melee only doesn't crit on it's tier nine, which the crit damage is auto built into the attack. It hits like a friggin truck.
Energy Melee: 3% or less damage to you with energy transfer. You regen it back with 2 seconds or less.
Really??? This is all you've got? Come on Blue, thought you would have better reasons.
Fire Melee. I will not take a Primary or Secondary where I automatically do not take 2-3 powers out of it. You are talking about giving up AoEs. You realize this, or is the conversational point that important?
Ice Melee. See Fire Melee.
Stone Melee. Yeah, it's like that.
Dark Melee. 3 AoEs? Exactly what attack chain are you looking at. I've run Dark Melee for 4 years. I am unsure how you are finding this great AoE attack chain in there. Please inform me.
Kinetic Melee. All tier 9 Scrapper attacks hit like a truck. The power specifically states it gives up crit to recharge power siphon. Please provide across the board numerical comparison if you are saying the crit is built into the damage on top of that.
Energy Melee. 3% damage is nothing? And what do you know about my regen? Maybe I want to pair it with Invulnerability? Maybe I have a great global recharge and I am spamming a great attacks chain, hitting myself for 3% time after time after time?
ps Street Justice is classic Street Fighting moves derived from Mixed Martial Arts/Okinawan style fighting. It is SPECIFICALLY a Martial Art inspired fighting style.
C'mom Pine. Not trying to fight but this is a straw argument you got going. My overall point is there are no good choices for a well balanced non weapon melee combatant. Something that mimics the great comic book fights. Energy Melee and Super Strength are about as close as we get. Super Strength is good, but I have run it for many years. I want to not deal with the Rage Crash for a few months. Energy Melee has poor AoE and damages the user, which is just an ignorant lazy way to balance any set. How many Super Heroes hurt themselves every 15 seconds they punch something? Name one? -
Welcome Hit Streak! Does this mean we are getting a new Blaster set with thrown Baseballs?
-
I have for years used the rocket pack jump from good vs evil, and now the steampunk backpack, as "ghetto afterburners" on fly. Just kind of get some altitude, nose down, and hit it. Oh, and lean on spacebar of course. I still prefer this to "Afterburner" which suppresses all combat powers. Way to epic fail. Not sure what the reasoning behind that was "No matter how many prereqs we make them take and power choices they give up it basically needs to be Rocket Board, right Joe?" This is a top tier travel power that nerfs you. Right up there with having Energy Melee damage you and most Blasters nuke crashijng them completely. But then give everyone a free crashless nuke in Judgement that is better. Because game balance is....er,...important. Yeah. Right.
