  1. Yeah, but you are saying the MMs do not always underform. You mentioned about half the Incarnate Trials. I know MMs are solid in regular play, I have seen friends run them. So really we are talking about a few trials in the entire game. My Invulnerability Brutes can have Endurance issues, and have a weakness to Psi damage (count the missions and Trials that can give you fits on!) other than that they are really solid performers. Should I be asking the Devs to either patch my armors or stop writing missions that have those challenges in them?

Compare this to the change being made to Blasters. Blasters suffered from 1) Being written as Blappers 2) Having no ability to deal with Agro they call down 3) Having no "target range" that the character is supposed to try to maintain 4) Having almost every set a mix of cones/balls/beams/melee PB 5) crashes. They were a mulitool that everyone else had the same tool gotten a different way without paying a huge price. Everyone else was focused, Blasters were Jack of all ranges and master at nothing. The changes to Blasters have started to address some of these issues. IMO Blasters still need a better Mez Protect option and a slightly higher overall damage mod, but give it a year of playtesting I guess.

You suggest a major change to MMs even though MMs are performing wonderfully in most all of the game, and struggling in a few Incarnate trials. I am almost always for buffing characters. I am a min/maxer from way back with pencil/dice games. But you need to argue a little cleverer for your point here, I am not seeing it.

My scraper, VEAT, Cor can all solo their way through the LAM warehouse. I try to do that on my MM and I die, either due to the pets not being their or my low HP or not being in BG mode.

Now BAF, UG, MOM, are ok for MM's. But the LAM, Keys, TPN, MAG all SUCK for MMs, in my opinion.

Now I am going to be reinvesting in my Merc/Traps, I got a new build planed that softcaps him but not the pets and has decent support. Once I get it built I'm going to do a lot of trials with him, get him up to T4 in all the Incarnate goodies. I'm just going to know that no matter what I do I'll always be under-performing. It just burns me ya know?
Okay, gonna remind the kind and gentle folk of Locker C18 that I know nothing about MMs. Still, from hearsay in the game (it is easiest to get a SOd MM to solo AVs and GMS) and the statement of the OP above (I'm great on some incarnate content but not ALL) I am unsure the archetype is in need of a buff. Would be me similar to complaining about my Invulnerability Brutes (Oh, on 97% content I get great performance, but I can struggle with End and Psi, so BUFF NE NOAHZ)
  3. I am actually seriously considering leveling a character 1-50 in DFB. I have been experimenting with Tankers recently. I am a traditional Brute player, and Tanks frustrate me. Not only is my attack payer severely restricted, the power choices are in the wrong orders. I have a toothless Dark?dark Tanker sitting at 29 right now. Great build, great I/Os (so far) and yet does not have the Blue bar to get through a single fight and has zero attack capability. You can hit him with 3 simultaneous Alphas and he glows pretty however. If this was my only Tanker I was experimenting with I might be content to grind him the rest of the way, but I tend to explore organically, and am building multiple Tankers with different sets. For Playtesting I jump out into the Task Force Commander series, generally preferring to hit any TF once I have outleveled it 3+ levels, so I get an honest look at how the character performs there. But I am looking at just leveling one up from 1-50 in DFB, letting me ignore all the unbalanced problems of tankers from 10-40 when they have such tremendous growing pains.

I know people take issue with that because MMs are powerful with just SO's but what people don't realize is that even if you IO an MM to the gills the effect is nowhere near as profound as it is on a soft caped Scraper or perma-domination Dom. In my opinion to make an MM effective in the iTrials you have to soft cap yourself and the pets. Its pointless otherwise. If your pets are not softcaped then your secondary (whatever it is) may as well not even be their because you will spend all your time resummoning and rebuffing your pets.

So playerbase in your opinion is there any other AT that needs help as much as MM's post I24?
Okay, I know almost nothing about MMs. However, ignorance is a great spot to learn stuff at! What I do know about them is from hearsay in the game. I have heard how it is easy for an MM to solo GMs and AVs for instance, and how they are the easiest class to do this with. Is this true? If so, do they need a buff? Not all characters (or archtypes) are meant to be able to be perfect at everything. Just asking.
  5. Makes me think of "The man with no name" characters. Is that a valid archetype? Eastwood played one and that movie a year or so ago, "Drive" had one. There are other examples. Eastwood's is derivative of Akira Kurasawa's Yojimbo after all.
  6. besides "i did this...no badge" is there any valid reason for doing this on a character? I can see sometimes where I get 2 tier 4s in the same ability (Clarion & Rebirth) for specific roles. But this seems a little like collecting photos of everybody who acted in "The Avengers" (no matter how small a role) by personally taking them. Is there a point?
  7. Thank you Samuel Tow and Arcanaville. Your writing on this subject is what is truly heroic. I wade through the campy crappy writing in game, which varies widely. Sometimes you get cool, but the other end of the spectrum is a bad concept, poorly executed, and completely unedited. I ignore most of this because I like to level and smash. But writing like you two are doing (and some other posters in this thread as well) really brings home the fact that City players can be some of the best gamers to hang with in the world. My channelmates on Virtue, and places like the boards are what really make the game feel like community to me. Thank you for elevating the discussion.
  8. This conversation is a big reason why I headed redside my first couple years. When i created my characters I created classic villains. (In my mind, in reality...meh) My villains care not about canon, care not about who gives them missions, why they do missions, who wins, or who dies. The entire Redside experience fitsa very well into my favorite storyteller's multiverse (my wife, shout out!) because it basically says multiple timelines, mutiple realities, multiple choices, multiple outcomes. Where does the power come from? I decide, or i do not care. Now that i go Blueside I pretty much take the same attitude. Incarnate Power, Wells? whatever. I do what i want! I need a cape that says that!

Another thought: The "Canon" of city of Heroes has managed to repulse me for 5 years, so I am a few years ahead of those of you who lost it on the Well decision. Why you ask? (or not...) The stupid Hero Archetypes and that whole storyline. Aliens who transform you into horrific creatures? As heroes? Have none of the people who write for this game ever heard of H.P.Lovecraft? This level of quoting images from a century old plotline without realizing what you are writing about is pukeworthy. So now they have a Well, but it seems to half make sense. what a shock, right?
  9. Clarke's Three Laws are three "laws" of prediction formulated by the British writer and scientist Arthur C. Clarke. They are:

1 When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2 The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3 Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
  10. Delete it and start again, you can do better than that.
  11. I do DFB up to 16-22 depending on the character. I level the build based on what I want it to look like at that level, not how well it performs in the DFB. I will use the DFB as filler experience after that, and do not expect "perfect DFB performance" or build for that.
  12. I like your ambition Samuel, write on!
  13. Alright, stay on a focused point. Copy-editing is not that expensive. I am unsure of the exact rates, but lets call it $20.00-$30.00 an hour. There is very little actual text in a storyline. So, either 1) Nobody wants to spend $50.00. 2) Nobody wants to spend the time to enlist a copy-editor, or 3) Nobody but us gives a crap. Alright?

Similarly Warkupo, I prefer to use I/Os to build more solid layers rather than depend on a "miracle" button with a probable death at the end. Then 1 purp and 1 orange of any size (almost always available) gives me the minute I need to tear into the largest mobs no problemo. If they changed the Tier 9 into ANYthing else I would consider it an improvement, it is that bad to me. Literally, if you got a Dev as drunk as they ever been, and they come up with any idea ANY i would accept that as a better solution to the power than it is now. THe power is stupid. I am used to sets having powers I do not like and avoid. However, for a tier 9 defining power of the set to be this nasty is really poor. Some people, like Samuel Tow, will love it. Some people love jumping off building and opening a chute with inches to spare. I feel the Devs back in the day really missed the mark on this, but they were writing for a different game too, and hindsight is 20/20. I would love to see the data on who takes these powers and uses them. I would lay out $50.00 it ain't very many.
  15. If i could untoggle "Unstoppable" and take the hit when I wanted it then it would improve it enough for me to give it another try, even if they did not change the crash at all.
  16. Hi Folks! I rarely Tank, but am trying again. I went for a Dark Tank for a few reasons (Concept, sexy resists, great heals) and I/O'd the crap outta it. I am not used to building a Tank though. Can someone scan this and see if I made any WTF decisions in there? Thanks. Oh, the Energy Torrent gets the KD Proc, and I'll color it Black!

  17. IMO Monkeyslap hit the nail on the head. Now, i have run way more than my share of SS/Invul and SS/Will Brutes. So if I want to PL one of these to 50 (Why do I keep making more, why?) then no one can fault me for it, as I understand the character. However, my newest projects are the new Water Blasters, a Kin/Will Scrap (thx KD proc!) and a Dark/Dark Tank. None of these have I run to any significant level, some not at all. if I was 50'd with them tomorrow it would take me a few days to a week to understand the synergy of the powers and the timing of things. It is almost easier to learn as the powers level in over the course of a few days to a week as I 50 them "organically".

From your perspective it is indeed clear, and any change would be unfair. From my perspective I have been playing a set for 5 years without a tier 9 that is worth as much as the tier 1 power in the set to me. That has never felt fair.

In a related story I never played Blasters with a crashing Nuke (aftyer many failed experiments) for exactly the same reason. Useless to me. Thankfully the Devs saw fit to make major changes.

I hope the Devs come up with a solution neither of us "Hate" even if neither of us gets "everything we want"
  19. Yeah Sam, I see your point. However, I have been running Invulnerability for 5 years without a tier 9 power. You can take that as a referendum on 1) How much i like the set 2) How closely that set fits my idea of supers or 3) How bad that tier 9 is. Or any combo. But it pains me to have no useful (to me) tier 9 in my chosen power set. Again, that is on SO builds and I/O builds both.

Having her edit your work is 1) quite irritating 2)wonderful, because it is so much better when she finishes. It might even be 1) that stops the team from hiring a competent editor. It cannot be the price, they could spend $100.00 and have a copy editor actually edit all the textfor an entire storyline. Let's face it the game is not text heavy, and they really just need the 99% stupid grammatical errors taken out. The continuity stuff is not something you can expect an editor to do, and the text would be lightning fast to do. My guess is they have never priced out an independent editor. I know 3 working locally that are part time temps doing on line stuff while working at the local paper full time. They are not working at minimum wage, but they are not charging lawyer fees to do this by any means. And seriously, the amount of work the game needs done is almost nil. Add up all the text in one storyline and read it. It will take a few minutes.

My suggestion would be to have the writers block out the text the way it will be in a game. Contact a editor freelancer, forward them the (very very raw) copy. Have them correct it. Should take an hour or so. Put the repaired and correct text in. The difficulty seems to be 1) not wanting to take the 3 step process, and 2) not wanting to pay the nominal editing fee.

If crashing god modes are useless on heavy Inventions builds, then I'll be over there in the corner crying about crocodile tears about it. They're useful TO ME, and I don't want that taken away from me.
We should definitely change them just because it would irritate Sam! No, heh, but that would be funny. On a (slightly) more serious note I respec'd out of Unstoppable two weeks after I got it, and have never used it again. I was using SOs during that time exclusively. (I used SOs for about a year when I first started.) I ran a lot of Invulnerability in that 1st year (still do) and the power is useless to me in SO and I/O builds. Back then I used an egg timer to monitor my 3 minutes, and was doing everything to milk that power for all I could get out of it. It is the worst min/max power in the game (besides the crashing nuke idea). How can I say this? I hate it, it is a power designed by a hungover idiot on a deadline who thought he knew how to write stuff for video games. It is ill conceived, ill executed, and poorly animated to boot.

*Ignore it. It's just a game. MST3K Mantra, guys.

*Create your own award-winning MMO and write it better. (I say this entirely without sarcasm, and honestly mean it.)

Please, for the sake of other people who don't like wading through pages upon pages of angry, sarcastic, acidic forum arguments to try and find people who actually want to talk about the actual topic of the thread, please do not do the following.

*Call the writers incompetent: It's rude, unproductive, and annoying to those of us who actually like the game.

*Complain about the writing when it has little/nothing to do with the conversation at hand: It's perfectly valid to not like the writing, and also valid to voice those opinions, but only in certain contexts.

*Don't argue your grievances ad nauseum. It's the internet, and people aren't going to agree with you, but that's no reason to strangle a perfectly good discussion with a relatively minor disagreement.

So I ask, please, for the sake of everyone, to stop arguing and complaining about the writing. If you must, please do so at the appropriate threads, and not in the midst of unrelated discussions. I'm only asking this because I'm tired of arguments. You may not like the writing, and I can see where you're coming from. But I do not want to hear about it. Thank you, and goodbye.
    This entire post needs editing.
  23. I think my problem with the big crash tier 9s come from the same place that has me running Brutes 80% of the time. I want to run the guy from the comics that crashes through brick walls and laughs at bullets. That whole "now you are weak as a kitten hah hah" thing does not appeal to me. Yes, i have seen it's use in comics, it is valid. It is also why i build my tabletop RPG characters with as few Dependent NPCs as possible. I prefer the orogin "Orphan raised by space pirates", makes things a lot simpler. No DNPC, no leverage. No weak as a kitten crash, no leverage.

The new Bio Armor does not include a Crashing Tier 9, of any type. If you look at the development of CoH you go from God Mode with hurting crashes, to Willpower with Major Insp buff and mini crash, to no crash. I see it visually as a graph from stupid to reasonable. Thankfully the curve was strong enough to get to reasonable long before CoH goes the way of history.
  24. light on the sarcasm, was really hoping for more caustic vitriol. but i agree with your leveling logic on all fronts. i will say that grabbing a dfb is better than waiting around for an ITF or something to start sometimes, even on Virtue.
