  1. I knew I felt a disturbance in the force when I wrote that... now I see what the problem is.

But seriously though, is she the ring leader as well as a wring leader?
  2. I'm probably missing something, but where exactly did sex trade come into this? Is the dutchess a wring leader or something?
  3. A way in which energy can be conserved and the universe can have a beginning is if the universe transitioned from static to dynamic. An example of this would be all of the energy condensed into a small point, where "something" would alter it to form a dynamic state and thus kick into motion the rest of the events for the formation of the universe as follows. This model of the beginning of the universe, while still allowing energy to be conserved, isn't used since it requires a hypothetical abstraction be applied to the static universe. This hypothetical abstraction in particular is agency. Hence, the dilemma.

Personally I don't believe that theory, since I'm not pantheistic. Nonetheless it is a possibility. Another theory, one not implying agency, is that membranes collided and made our corner of the universe that way. In that model, the universe is actually just the conversion of energy from a misunderstood from to its currently understood form As to how the rules of the universe were sustained or if the matter of where membranes got their energy/dynamic nature, that is all up for debate.
  4. I definitely /sign. I'd like to have a lot of things added to instanced missions that aren't right now. There are some ideas I would like to be... dynamic. I'll explain some of those below. Ideas I have had:

#1: Submarine. There are some "ship" fights that are a long hallway, but what if it was a super-cramped and high-tech looking place with the whirring background noise of a sub? With blue-glass windows to the outside? Awesome.

#2: Aquarium. Blue glow, surrounded by fish, water areas you can enter, ect.

#3: Straight-up underwater fights. Call me a little spoiled on aquaman shows, but this is something CoH needs, and can be done really well. My idea would be that being in the water would give each toon an auto-power that grants flight, but uses swimming animations, and only allows this while in the water areas (My idea would be to have an auto-power that grants a 2 second duration, but pulses every second so you have two stacks, and two seconds outside of water at most). This allows for three-dimensional enemy placement, and a whole branch of enemies that we currently don't have any of in CoH. No word on how breathing will be affected or now any powers can be affected. Right now, no effect. Just map variety.

#4: Zero-gravity areas. C'mon, with space and the ever-advancing technologies, there has got to be areas that there are no gravity in. These places would have everyone in perpetual "group fly" from a zone wide-effect, again allowing for more depth in combat. And imagine if this can be turned on and off, like a zonewide mandatory "grant power" thing that can be turned on or off, and can be due to the shifting nature of the map.

#5: More floating island type maps/skyscraper roof fights. During Scirocco's arc, I found a map where you could just fall off the edge into endless bottomness. It was awesome. What if we had more of those, like low-orbit space station outsides maps, or sky scrapers that are high up and you have to jump from one to another to fight enemies that ALSO jump from one to another..

#6: Airplane. We all wish our heroes could've stopped 9/11. Why not let us?

#7:Warzone. Might have to make a "wallpaper" around the edge of the map to get the point across, but it would be awesome.

#8: Maps with destructible walls that lead to other areas of the map. We already have things like Vaults in bank missions, so why not use that technology to let us blow a hole through enemy encampments or make a shortcut "through" a building.

#9: Schools. We've got to save the children!

That is all I can think of for now. But this is quite easy to do. Just go to some place in real life and think "Hm... do I want to beat up freakshow here?" and then put it down.
  5. I can hear the similarity. They both have a guitar descending in pitch as main beat. But I did not think of Megas XLR msyelf.
  6. If only modern work videos were like this.

I remember when I had to get my health card, they made a video that was boring as hell and looked like it was made in the 90's. Imagine if, during the video, instead of just shooting a restaurant while going over the guidelines, they had shots of people vomiting all over the place from improperly prepared food.

There's actually a good reason to do this. I, myself, didn't buy a comic until I was 22 years old and had my own job and income and moved out of my parents place. The reason why was because my parents wouldn't tolerate the comic books.

If there was a much "softer" image to it than a bikini-with-bewb-window woman all over them, them just maybe I would've been buying comics with my parents money a long time ago.
  8. I never really liked the show due to political-ly reasons that I can't really discuss here. I'm not too sad that it is going, since I am hopeful that the next show they replace it with might be more tolerable.
  9. I was hoping that this wouldn't turn into a religious debate, but as with anything dealing with cosmology that is the only course it ever takes.

For example the whole "matter and energy can neither be created no destroyed" isn't exactly correct... And that is obvious to anyone that even remotely believes that the universe, as in our physical space, began. If the universe is infinite why wouldn't matter be as well? If the universe is not then whatever created the universe created matter as well. It's not a hard thing to get.
Matter and energy being indestructible is an assumption that works on topology greater than the atomic scale. It is through the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle that virtual particles can appear for short amounts of time and vanish just as quickly. Since the universe obviously deals with things larger than single molecules, it is a safe to operate under the assumption that energy is conserved when dealing with any scientific discipline equal to or higher than chemistry. It is indeed considered a far stranger phenomena when energy doesn't appear to be conserved than when it does appear to be conserved.

The universe beginning doesn't suddenly necessitate that matter and energy not be conserved. The beginning of the universe is not some abstract concept that creates ideas that someone can just apply to the world willy nilly like Santa Claus. It is an area of great interest and of great difficulty in explanation simply because it requires weird implications. Those weird results are favorable to the alternative model of an infinite universe, since that produces a fundamental contradiction: If the universe is dynamic and infinite, any point or vector must have a limitless amount information to explain it's position, and a limitless sequence to have physically passed to come to it's position. This necessitates that the infinite events be countable, achieved, and capable of being surpassed by subsequent events; the infinite events must be finite. Since infinite =/= finite, the theory must be rejected on the grounds that it is ultimately nonsense.

A universe that has an infinite amount of mass and space would collapse into itself due to infinite gravitational pull of the infinite mass. There is only one way that this wouldn't happen, and that would be if mass, energy, and the space it occupies were perfectly homogeneous. Since there are no observations to confirm this, and plenty of observations against the assumption that the universe is homogeneous, that theory can be rejected.

Something I noticed a lot of people don't understand about science is that the explanations for phenomena aren't divined. What is really going on is scientists are observing phenomena which behave in a fashion that flies in the face of what they previously understood, and this leads them to scramble for an explanation for this unusual phenomena. They didn't just say "There is multiple dimensions, and therefore a single photon can cause interference with itself". Quite the opposite happened: when they saw an interference pattern in the double-slit experiment, they scratched their heads and after awhile they came up with a strange excuse for this strange phenomena. Then you get multiple camps of people with different theories who fight over it, and the body of people with the theory that dies out the slowest wins.

There is something that a coworker of mine said once, and I think it applies perfectly to the field of cosmology. Unfortunately, I can't remember who he was quoting (memory of a 90 year old man again):

"The universe is not only stranger than what we imagine, but stranger than what we can imagine".
  10. Energy is actually created and destroyed every day. It is just done so in very small scales. I'm talking sub-atomic.

I can't remember the specifics, but the Uncertainty Principle means that particles (called virtual particles, since they cannot be detected) can appear for a very small amount of time in which it travels a very small distance before disappearing again. The mathematically calculated distance these virtual particles could travel was identical to the distance of nuclear strong force extends, so it is a theory that strong force was caused by these virtual particles.

Or was it weak force? Damn I wish I didn't have the memory of a 90 year old man...
  11. Pretty cool. I didn't have any particular attachment to the outfit prior.

Sometimes not so muscular, but still broad-shouldered and impressive. Sometimes, yes, the bustline was the standout feature.

This pic... she's clearly fit and athletic. But the underlying body type just doesn't seem right to me. More suited to a gymnastic / acrobatic / martial arts superheroine maybe, not a powerhouse slugger like I picture PG being. And compared to the Alex Ross PowerWoman from Kingdom Come, she looks downright dainty.

It might be in trying to make the character less "sexist", DC has actually ended up reducing the diversity of female body types in their superheroines.

Edit: a particular problem I have with this cover is seeing her next to Huntress. If you had those two switch costumes and wear the right wigs, not sure you could tell them apart. Did the ladies bond as a superheroing duo over the fact that they were the same height and dress size and could share clothes?
This. So much this. A problem that kind if irked my sister (and me to some degree) is that when WB brought back Batman the Animated Series, they changed it so all of the women in the show had identical body styles. And that they forgot what pants were. Prior to that, each character had different proportions, and you felt like you were looking at different people, and not palette swapped people.
  12. Ah darn... got me when my arms were crossed. I quickly realized it makes Allatrope look kind of clippy so I went to the other stance.

But still, that was fun. I always love to play AE arcs with large groups of people, but in-game I rarely get the chance to do so.

    "In his head"... heh.
  13. I'm just still surprised that you think I was talking about the game in particular. That was the last subject on my mind.

But... Yeah you should mention it to someone if their RP style or their backstory or their character makes it really hard to RP with them. You let god-modders know that they're god-modding, pushy people know that they are pushing, and you let annoying people know that their antics drive others away. Sure, you can just abandon people who don't already fit into the mold, but why do so when you can improve them? To save on effort?

Something I sort of had a revelation about as a kid was that the people that I had to deal with now (back then) were going to be the same people I had to deal with in the future (present now). All through life you meet an endless amount of people, and you'll be putting more and more people into those "will tolerate, will not tolerate" boxes. Those people don't go away after you decide you don't like their RPing style. Eventually new faces become a rarity, and then it is all about people you recognize. That intolerate box is going to keep growing and growing, and eventually it gets to a point where you can walk into a room, and instantly pick out a dozen people you can't stand; people that remind you about how horrible their RPing is and how hard it is to find a good person to do it with. This problem doesn't get any better unless someone attempts to fix it. Due to the glorious lack of sincere and constructive criticism in the online world, that person who attempts something will have to be you, since no one else is going to do it.

I'm proud to be a harsh critic .
  14. Those seem nice, until you realize that they add up to be greater than 100%.

How we have the above numbers follows a tree diagram for statistics. It is kind of hard to construct on the forums, so I'll make a custom image for it.

Each junction represents a path that can be taken with the damage proc, and the numbers represent the the probability of going down each path from that junction. At each junction, the proc can either hit and continue down the line, or it can miss and the chain terminates. To get the probability of any particular outcome, you need to multiply the probabilities of each leg together. So, for 4 hits, that would be .75 x .75 x .75 x .75 x .25.

Well, if someone smells like a poop sandwich, you'd be amazed how long it'll take before someone says something about it. Until then, that someone just goes around smelling like a poop sandwich, not knowing that they are offending to everyone else.

Checks and balances, man! You don't know you're incorrect until someone corrects you.

Oh, but there is a further misunderstanding now that I think about it, because the "this thing has meaning to me" definition is not "I am ascribing meaning to this" but rather "This thing is indicative of being important (to)"

You can use it however you like, but looking at the definition it seems you are using the word wrong >.>
To make sure I didn't mess up the definition, I looked it up before I wrote that post.

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Significant

Important is a Synonym of Significant, and thus it has the same applications.

Prove that it is important to me. It can't be done.

Mechanically,it is impossible for significance to exist without a universe, but the importance of that to any individual (real or theoretical) is arbitrary. Imposing the standard of "which factor of is more important to having perception to which significance can exist" is also arbitrary, since any necessary factor that is missing means that perception can't exist.

(Sorry if I didn't get the edit in time. My computer is running *really* slow right now for no discernible reason).
  21. The interesting thing about infinity and undefined functions is that the previous conditions to achieve each state are often irrelevant. An example of this would be how 5/0 = 11/0. Once these approach a state of infinity, there is no discerning between them. Infinity - Infinity = Infinity, after all. It is hard to actually grasp the concept of infinite, since we tend to just think of it as a big number when it is really best described as a state or condition.

Something that I do find odd is the correlation that someone makes between size and significance. Significance by definition requires a perspective to give a standard in which significance can be judged. Because of this, it is a perceptually based property, and ultimately the conditions of significance are personal and arbitrary. Take any casual relationship that is important to an individual (thus, significant to that individual), and double the size of the universe. The properties of that relationship do not magically change in a larger universe, so significance is not altered.

It is a strange phenomena that importance is somehow being measured in height, width, and depth when dealing with the cosmos. I attribute this attitude's genesis to how size seems to indicate maturity, health, and performance in society. Children, born small, see the bigger adults around them as models, idols, and ideals to which they should shape themselves. Larger size comes with proportionate strength, so a bigger person is generally stronger, and thus is safer therefore healthier. This extends further aspects in society, but that isn't really important right now.

So with that, there are a few things that can be said about significance.

    • There are two ways to consider significance: How important something is to a particular goal, and the importance to a particular individual. Individual meanings are personal, and goals require a goal setter(s) and thus are subject to perspective again.
    • All objects are unique; Identical objects are not one object.
    • Size is relative and opinion. I cay say "the universe is small" as easily as I say "the universe is big", and any meaning one derives from that is arbitrary.
    • Other viewpoints of significance are only significant to you if you decide to value them in your own personal judgment, either for meaning or for achieving a goal.
    • There is no absolute standard of significance, since it is an effect of personal perception. Widely shared concerns do not suddenly make themselves correct or incorrect.
    • The probability of events in the universe is an effect of any phenomena they describe, and not a cause. Suddenly doubling the size of the universe doesn't mean that there are suddenly more features fully distinct in shape and in properties in the universe.

To end, I say this: You are not insignificant because there is a lot of space around you, you do not become important if universe is compact, and you are not unimportant if we cannot see your smiling face on whatever scale when someone makes a scaling model of the universe.

EDIT: I forgot to mention sustained systems and logic relations for relevance in significance. An example of this would be how water is significant to the survival of a fish. Whether or not fish surviving is important to an individual is arbitrary, but the fact that the elements have those interactions is not arbitrary. In these cases, significance is not about meaning or importance, but an abstract concept being applied to the unintelligent mechanics of the universe. It isn't pertinent to this thread, but nonetheless it is considered "significance" so I am including it.

Part of growing up is realizing that you don't have to respect other people's choices, and in fact you shouldn't respect other people's choices. Just respecting other people's choices doesn't bring to light the idiocy in them, and thus doesn't provide a check for widespread stupidity. People have to learn that life isn't about "playing how you want" but it is really about "playing how others want". You think a manager will hire you at a new job if you refuse to do the job their way? But think about how many friends that one guy who pees in the corner of the room, doesn't bathe regularly, and refuses to play basketball unless he gets to tackle people has. That's right: none. But hey, he's just living by his own choices...

God damn, why hasn't somebody gone and done that already?!
I thought this was funny, but then I realized I was half way there. Although I don't RP, I have a character named Hare Splittor on Virtue. He's a big scary guy who dresses up like a bunny while he fights crime because he's weird like that. Though most of the pseudo-RPing is how he'll yell at other players for not respecting "the pink" or bunnies. His backstory is that he was always strange, but kept getting in fights as he grew up so now he's tough as nails, and fights crime dressed (kinda) like a bunny to make girly stuff more respectable.

Not surprising. MoM and UG are generally run on a tell-only basis. That is, when they advertise that they are running that trial, to get on you need to send a tell that you are interested in joining.

I am still surprised at a lot of the claims made in this thread. I cannot stress this next detail enough:

You do not need a team of all 53 to complete the trial

Seriously, just last night I hosted a PUG MoM with 14 people, only requirement being 52+ (one toon was 51, but I let it slide), and we thrashed it nearly effortlessly with minimal instructions needed. The only hiccup that occurred was when the Giant Monster in the fifth phase was killed behind Shalice, meaning she couldn't get mezzed that run. Afterwards, it was smooth sailing.

It isn't about DPS either. The greatest issue in the MoM trial is survivability. Any toon that doesn't live too long ceases contributing to the run, and the more deaths that stack up the less likely you are to succeed. If everyone can survive, I would expect a team of mixed 50-53 toons to be more than capable of beating the trial. But, as far as my experience goes, level 50 toons just plain don't survive. Whether it is the AoE attacks from GMs in the first phase, the Mother Mayhem copies in the first phase, or Yin's constant DoT + Lighting + Pulse zone wide damage, 50's kiss the floor quicker than Usain Bolt, since they are fighting an enemy that does 66% more damage than an even-conning AV. Failures at the sixth phase of the trial are so rare that they get special mention each time they happen.

Second, I succeeded at my first MoM run. Funny thing, I thought the TPN was a boatload harder than MoM for the longest time because of this. Of course, I am slightly exceptional in the case that I did the following:
    • I researched the trials beforehand, reading their descriptions on the CoH official site.
    • I actively asked questions before the trial started, and during the MoM trial when we had breathing room.
      • My response to discovering that there was no hospital was, and I quote, "YIKES!"
But enough tooting my own horn; I couldn't have succeeded without that group of 15 other people there beside me, newbies and not as newbies all alike (the trial was recently released at the time). I succeeded in my first UG run, too. It was nearing the line with the Avatar, but the group intrinsically understood that confused = don't attack. The only trial I believe I failed on the first time through was the TPN, hence why I revered it for awhile.

Nowadays, the trials, at least on virtue, have their vets and their newbies grouped together. So each time a run is done successfully, those 3 or 4 guys who have never done the trial before complete it successfully. I'm not sure where that whole 5/100 thing comes from, but if the RP server is any indication of how things go, then I'd say at least a third of all new players succeed first time. The exception to this rule is during when the trial is first released, in which at this time there are no veterans and strategies concocted to ease the difficulty.
