You see, I'm going to upload a copy of my superior intellect into the Rikti's mental network.

I got some bad news for ya... that's pretty much how the original book went too. Only replace Tom Cruise with an H.G. Wells self-insert.

The wiki for starters. There's also the Galaxy City zone info page on the website, there are various plaques scattered throughout paragon City, such as the statue for Dauntless in Steel, and then there's the Canon for the Fodder thread.

Well, from a roleplaying standpoint, you're not an "***" but you may want to consider branching out a bit, but it's still understandable. As you've read from the above, quite a few characters tend to tie themselves less with government and state and more with their own ideals.

I mean, hell, look at the Morality Mission "One Good Spider", as a hero you're effectively making a public act of war on the Rogue Isles by publically attacking high ranking government officials (arbiters), assaulting the local militia (Arachnos itself), and taking away a political prisoner (the Rogue Bane Spider).
I'm sure in-universe, characters who do that would get chewed out by American government to hell and back, possibly even tried and sent to jail, or the Rogue Isles for trial.
They might not like Lord Recluse and his rule of the Rogue Isles, but he's apparently considered a legitimate leader of the Rogue Isles by this point and heroes going off and making such a show out of assaulting the place as American Citizens would certainly draw some ire and definitely falls WAAAAAAY out of the Citizen's Crime Fighting Act in-game where you're supposed to be following the same restrictions as the police.
but why is your hero supposedly doing this? because it's the right thing.
  10. I gotta ask this: looking back on some of the back story on the site, it mentions a fiasco where Statesman, in the initial assault of the first invasion attacked three Rikti Saucers which promptly crashed and destroyed the neighborhoods they landed in.
Why didn't Statesman, who had already been a hero for quite some time now, know about these consequences.
I'm really just curious because it does seem almost out of character on his part, though we do have word from Hero 1 that Statesman's "a little too violent" at least around the time of the Rikti War.

Also I am feeling a bit sad that this and other questions probably won't be answered since Manticore's answer thread has not been updated in a year...

The history doesn't specifically say that (that I could find), but any whose origins are dated from the time of Boomtown's decimation have reason to dislike, even hate, Statesman. Since none of my characters originated from Boomtown, I have no personal complaints against him. My SG leader, on the other hand, does.

Here's a quote from the history: "From the moment the first invader stepped through a portal, the heroes in Paragon City sprang into action. Statesman led the charge, quite literally, hurling his body into one of the largest attack craft. A minute later the massive flying fortress exploded from within and fell crashing to the ground. The seemingly unharmed Statesman flashed across the sky and into another ship, with similarly devastating results. It was only after the third such assault that he became aware of the tremendous collateral damage these falling behemoths were causing when they crashed to the streets below. Aware of this problem, he changed tactics, using his incredible strength to actually push the giant ships out over the river before demolishing them."

    Here's the link

You'd think that a hero of Statesman's stature and knowledge would be a bit more intelligent in such things, no? The quote doesn't directly point at Baumton ("Boomtown") as being the recipient of those ships crashing, but we can infer that evidence seems to indicate that it was Baumton and the Rikti War Zone.
I somehow highly doubt Baumtown was ANY of those places. I mean look at the Rikti War Zone, there has ALWAYS been a very noticeable ship crashed in it. There is no sign of a destroyed rikti ship anywhere in Paragon.

Though I do agree that one would think Statesman would have known better, some part of me almost thinks that that was a mistake if it hadn't been up for so long. seems like something to poke the lore thread about.
  12. An interesting example of the opposite is my Samurai character Takezo despite, and partly because, he is temporally displaced from Edo period Japan, he actually rejects modern Japanese government. Part of this consternation was that he read about what Japan did in World War II and immediately came to feel his own nation was dead to him, it's a process he's slowly begun forgive them, understanding that it's a different government now, and as a bonus the Tokugawa shogunate is also out of power. (His family has a grudge against Tokugawa for setting castes as a birth thing when Tokugawa himself had been born a peasant. Takezo's family is a similar case of rising from peasantry into Samurai caste)
So, no, he's not going to be the kind of person that goes out on a limb out of national loyalties.
The rest of mine have a strong "politics ruin everything" stance and similarly are not going to breech their morals for the sake of politics and nationality. So it kind of makes Malta justified in their hatred of them.

    Who Will Die?

I kind of gotta go with Vaden here, how has Statesman really been the bane of everyone's existence? He's not much different from one of those statues. Then there's sheer fact that we all hate him just goes to show there'd be ZERO emotional impact of his death.
If they're going to kill Statesman, they'd need him to become more likable in the first place.
Now just removing statesman would be easy, especially to set up for character development.

First: You have him fight Tyrant... And then the Well of Furies withdraw all support from him mid-fight, leaving him not only a normal human, but suffering a relapse of his Mustard Seed Gas poisoning (which, the Well of Furies never did actually cure).

Second: Someone else intervenes and dies to help him, I'd probably say Blue Steel, BaB, Manti, or even an ordinary PPD officer. Bonus points if they honestly lay down a surprising amount of smack on Tyrant. This would prove to Statesman you don't the power of the Well to stand up against super powers.

Finally: After recovering in the hospital, Statesman, now just Marcus Cole again feels humiliated and humbled by the experience. Realizing that the world has greater heroes than him already, he goes on a sabbatical journey, vowing that when he returns to be strong enough to support other heroes.

Bonus points: Something similar happens to Lord Recluse, only instead of going on sabbatical, he, armed with only SoA AT powers, proves that even without the support of the Well, he's more than capable of keeping the rest of Arachnos in-line, but still develops common sense and withdraws to straighten Arachnos out (like that horrific idea of making Arachnos bases have chicken wire floors and mandating female personale to wear heels) and strengthen the hold he has.

My apologies. This stance of mine is kind of ironic given that a year or two ago I suggested a similar idea, only it took place in a Modern Japanese city called Emiya (Guardian Shrine) and the "Warring factions" was the recent consternation between the Emiya's very traditional and historical Japanese heritage and the definitively modern and Western influenced half of the city (to the point where in the sector descriptions, I referred to the zone's electronic's district as being called "The Little Sister of Akihabara").

HOWEVER. There are NO Japanese groups in game. Ergo, that precedent does nothing for this suggestion.
Prior to issue five there had been no Irish mythological groups in game. Prior to issue one, there had been no really really bizarre, eldritch monster groups in game. Prior to Issue Twelve, there had been no ancient roman groups in game.

I do understand how you feel, Techbot, "improve the old before moving onto something new and shiny" but I still felt the need to remind you that such a thing wouldn't be the first time.

Also, for last time I want to remind people in this thread that half the stuff all of you are talking about is NOT ancient Japan. What a lot of you seem to think of is Feudal Japan.
Please stop confusing Ancient periods with Feudal, Medieval, or other pre-modern periods.

Edit: I would like to say that I do support THE SPIRIT of the suggestion. It would be nice to actually see the world beyond the war walls and the inexplicable blue barriers and know what's going on out there. I mean it's really sad that even an oppressive society like Praetoria makes more mention of what's out beyond the sonic fences than the Rogue Isles and Paragon combined, you'd seriously think that even in lore nothing exists beyond those points.
But First and foremost I feel what we do have should be improved, revamped, and expanded on as Techbot suggests.

Alpha builds things. He does not 'summon essences' or 'call on the Well' or any of that. As I said, he would either steal the robots and improve them, or simply build them himself. Telling me 'Your character cannot do that, and has to break character to access these powers' is railroading and going too far, and thus I refuse to accept that.
    I'll drink to that.

Well, I kind of more imagined he'd be two winged, but he'd be, literally, statuesque, like a cracking statue. I mean if he has to resort to this he's probably lost to us a few times already and I can only imagine how willing the well would be to help him, as in, not at all.
  18. Basically an odd little thought I just had when staring over the powers used by some of the Freedom Phalanx, but what if you were allowed to reassign powers/ATs of Signature and non-signature NPCs, what do you think would be changed?

Personally, for me I'd respec Synapse into an Electrical Melee/SR scrapper, sure Neuron was changed into the same, but I can't help but imagine it would fit Synapse even more.

other than that, I wouldn't be able to respec other NPCs without using non-existent powers.

    Oooh

Well the obvious choice for who to kill off first should be any sig character with an ally rez. Otherwise attempts to kill off anyone else will just result in them being resurrected by their comrades.
You know, like what Lady Grey did in the comics for most of the Freedom Phalanx? (or was it the Dark Watcher... I'm sure it's Lady Grey though since Manticore's said DW is actually a dark/regen scrapper)
