Quote:There is at least one game out right now that does just this. And GW2 is said to be doing similar things along with an auto level-adjusting feature for lower and higher level zones and PvP.One technological solution is a sort of no-social-actions-required kind of teaming, where characters who are near a thing which admits teaming can form a team without anyone having to invite or be invited. You leave yourself open for group-joins, and people who are near you see a Join Group button. Press button, bang, grouped. No sitting around asking for invites, no trying to find people to invite. And you can opt out. It would be a delight to have a technological improvement like that for things like Rikti invasions.
But maybe you knew that already. =)

Quote:You are. Make a Corruptor! I started life here as a die-hard Defender player. They gave me some ranged offense along with tools that made me valuable to a team, but their damage was painfully low for the most part. It didn't help that I tended to pick low-damage sets. Soloing them stunk. Not at Level 8(Widow), not at Level 15(Defender). I agree more powers mean more options. I have all my options as slotted as I can. I don't have the Infamy/Influence to slot more. Hitting everything as it comes up. Not taking on more than one or two guys a time. Simple, basic, sensible. Hitting everything at the right times. I do not understand WHY I am dying, but I am. It's part of why I'm asking 'What am I doing wrong'?
<snipped>
Maybe I'm missing something.
At any rate, I still played them very very offensively. When Corruptors were released, it was like an answer to my playstyle. They're just like Defenders, but their primaries and secondaries are swapped. They give you the blasting power to do what you need, while giving you enough support that you don't feel like you're missing much of the Defender's advantage in buffs.
I'd recommend them to anyone having trouble with Defenders, but who likes those concepts and combinations.

Quote:I go one step further and just don't claim anything I'm not about to use (unslotters, catalysts, ATOs, etc...). Things there definitely do not work in a consistent manner so I'm timid about it.What I do is leave it unclaimed until I've checked out if it can be transferred or not.
Quote:That's what I did with the ATO's I got from the Super Packs I bought. I assumed they were character bound until I confirmed otherwise. Then I only claimed 1 on a character that could use it and tested to see if it was character bound by placing it in base storage. When that worked I took it to the market and tried selling it. When that also worked I claimed all the others. -
Quote:Oh, no! I do my best to take everyone's comments in the context they're presented and I would never compare registration dates or total time playing or number of 50s or anything (because I'd for sure lose that last one =P)Thanks for responding and clearing up the confusion I was having about your post. To be honest I thought there might be a remote possibility you were making a judgement based on the difference between both your and toasts forum reg dates. It doesn't happen often but it does pop up occasionally. Very glad to hear that wasn't the case.
Quote:I can understand why you can get frustrated by the generalizations, but please keep in mind that part of the reason they get made is because being more specific can bring down the wrath of the Mods. So someone will say Prems or Freems instead of Player A, B and C. I honestly think people only mean to include the group of players making the complaints rather than sweeping all Freems/Prems under the same umbrella. -
Quote:You're making a lot of assumptions. I didn't give a lot of detail as I didn't think it would matter. I didn't mean to imply any sort of constant subscription, only that I played the game from as early as I could because I was excited and wanted to support a superhero game. From there, I was with the game for over a year, then came and went periodically as I felt the desire.Uhm just for clarification.
1. You were subbed from the headstart on until when? Cuz if you were 4 reward tokens shy of unlocking lifetime IO access that means the longest you could have been subscribed is 57 months. That means you were unsubscribed for 3 years and 9 months or half the lifespan of the game. So either you were a sporadic player that subbed periodically for a few months at a time, or you quit playing several years ago and didn't come back until you heard you could play for free. In either case it doesn't make you more or less of a contributer than the person you quoted.
2. You must have spent more than $45 dollars on the game since Freedom launched because your math doesn't add up. $45 dollars only gets you three reward tokens.
We get 1 reward token for every 1200 points purchased.
Even with the 10% point bonus $45 dollars only gets you 3,960 points. That's 840 points short of what you'd need to unlock an additional reward token.
When Freedom went live, I had a nearly full T6 (game time, paid xpacs...). I started spending on points (some $15 lumps, some $5, buying costumes, character slots, powersets...), but haven't subbed and now T7 is one slot from full. I've spent a lot more than $45 since the game launched Freedom. That $45 is just the last 30-day cycle. It's more than normal and I've spent - on average - a bit more per month than I did when I was subbed, but I'm happy playing this way.
What I was objecting to was the idea that Preemies are all whining freeloaders. Maybe some of us are, but I'm seeing the attitude on the forums often enough that I just finally snapped. It's frequent enough that it makes me want to just walk some days. To be fair, he probably didn't mean to paint so broadly and I likely overreacted. Luckily, I like the game and people in it enough that I can get past the negativity of the forums most days, and I rarely do anything too rash (like my previous post).
Also, if anyone inferred from my post that I think I contribute more than a VIP, that was not my intent. I only meant to point out that some of us contribute on a comparable scale, or at least a not-inconsequential one, and would like to be considered relevant members of the community. -
Not only are there no buses, but there are only about 11 cars in the whole city, all of them dating to the 1970s.

Quote:I was subbed for quite some time, from the headstart on. I spent $45 just last month as a Premium player. I am literally $5 away from lifetime IO access.I am very tired of Premiums asking for more more more when truth be told they contribute very little to this game compared to VIPs. You are getting a game for FREE - the same game I had to pay for; for years, to be able to play with "just" SOs.
But you're right, I contribute so much less than you.

There are a few names I re-use across servers and characters, but rarely power combinations or concepts, even if I'm utterly smitten with them. Even characters that share a name and costume have different powers, origins, stories...
I have noticed that I have phases with costumes, where everything I design is based on a few core ideas that just have minor variations and then things just sort of evolve and a few months later, the costumes I make still all share stylistic elements, but not the same ones as a few months previous... Every time I step too far out of my trend I find that I'm disappointed and go right back. Changes are gradual for me there.
My favorites, though, they tend to be played a lot, given a lot of care...but I see them as individual, even if they carry a duplicated name (I just think of them then as alternate universe bearers of the name, maybe 'what-if' scenarios). -
Quote:This is huge for me.for a general answer, i keep coming back for customization, no other mmo on the market does it as well, and most mmos barely do it at all. I play other games across the pc, console and handheld spectrum but coh offers something unique .
What I love are the customization options for both appearance and capability, the way I can look how I want no matter what my abilities are.
I love the class system. I love that even though all Blasters do ranged damage, they all do it differently. I love that a Plant/Time Controller is radically different than an Ill/Rad one, or that a WP/TW Tank is nearly a different class from a Fire/Fire Tank.
Most MMOs do customization primarily through gear, and enforce rather strict tiering of appearance, and thematic elements (and I do understand both). The sea of options offered here is overwhelming and wonderful.
Many of the assets in the game are long past being dated, that's easy to admit. The game lacks environmental immersion for me, but it isn't a deal-breaker.
I loathe playing this game solo, however. Loathe it. I have my various reasons but some in the forum posting community make me hesitant to express any criticism of the game too boldly. Suffice to say I find it tedious and unrewarding for the most part (but not all, and sometimes there are things I feel I must do solo). Just my opinion.
But there's a switch that flips for me when I join a team, even a team of strangers with a terrible lack of variety. On a team, I can get past nearly all the game's warts and flaws and just revel in the unadulterated chaos of superpowered mayhem this game offers. It's big, loud, crazy fun. I can't replicate that dynamic ANYWHERE. It undoes all my hesitations with the game in one fell swoop. It's fun, people are silly and engaging (and yes, sometimes awful), and I love seeing costumes, powerset combinations, reading bios...
More than anything, those two elements: customization and the ease and reward of teaming, keep me playing and enjoying my characters.
I dunno if I got too far off topic or if that's what you're looking for (in fact, I'm pretty sure I ran right off the rails), but there you go! -
I do have to admit to being in love with that new club hair. I would also like some not-stupid-looking ponytail options. I dislike the extant ones.

I went from a sub where I bought GR to Preemie and I still have Praetoria, DP, the alignment system and so on.

Quote:As am I. I suspect it happened when they started allowing Exemped characters to get XP? I have no idea when that happened (I come and go from this game a lot), but I'm guessing that had something to do with it. And someone mentioned that even after you could exemp and get xp, it's only more recently that you weren't penalized somehow.A few years ago level hierarchy was very strictly enforced and socially expected. There is a LOT less of that I have noticed recently. I am VERY happy too.
Anyway, I agree with you wholeheartedly: it's a good thing. This game is and always has been one of the easiest to get a team; a big selling point for someone like me that absolutely hates soloing her heroes. -
Quote:I assume this applies to all the status effects handed out by bad guys? I get held over and over and over...some fights I feel like I should go wash some dishes until it's over (because I am out of inspirations and I can't move or cast), then rez or Rest, then go do it again at the next group. I'm starting to see why melee characters are so popular*.By the way, in case you hadn't noticed, the PvE mobs cheat.
You can be chain KBd until you are dead (ie: hit and KB'd, as you are standing up KB'd again, as you are standing up KB'd yet again etc. ad nauseam) all the while keeping you locked out of activating ANY powers or using any inspirations.
* I know it's not just that, but still! -
Yet so many people seem utterly incapable of it. Of course, maybe they're sabotaging it all on purpose. Hmmm...

Bishop,
I see and play in mid-level teams all the time on Virtue, Justice and Protector. So while I can't speak to your server specifically, I would extrapolate from the three I can that it's likely similar on all the servers.
Something else I see a lot more of than I used to are teams that just don't care what level you are or what level content they're doing so long as they're punching and blasting their way to safer streets. -

That's hard, but I have to say that Storm holds a special place for me. These days, Time makes me happy. For Melee: Dual Blades (I love how athletic and dancey it is) or Earth Assault (SMASH!!!!)...still out on that one.
Yeah, I seem to have the most fun right now with my Earth/Earth Dominator and my Plant/Time Controller. -
B makes me swoon.

I've always had a difficult time wrapping my head around the non-aging of comics and cartoons like the Simpsons when I bother thinking about it. To cope, I just assume all my characters are in their early 20s when I start them. That way, I can handwave that they are aging, because they're at a time of life when their precise age isn't all that important. I have yet to do any children or middle-aged/old heroes (not because I have a problem with heroes of those ages, but because I have a harder time getting 'into their skin').
So any of my characters could be between 20-35 and it doesn't matter all that much. They're typically younger adults with superpowers. All set. =) -

I've played a Storm Defender since the headstart (I only note that so you know I didn't start playing her last week - establishing context, if you will) and I can honestly say that while I once wished for more for O2 Boost, I got used to the way it works, and in teams I only use it as a spot heal or to free someone from the occasional mez when someone better-equipped can't get to it.
I've adapted to being unable to use it on myself, and I leave the real buffing and healing of others to the sets designed for it. That isn't to say I've not been invited to some teams *solely* for that power, because it's definitely happened. It's just to point out that I've never personally felt O2B was particularly lacking. Okay that's not true: once upon a time I did, but now I don't. I definitely wish it healed for more but it gets the job done and given its other utility, I can't really complain. Storm is nicely aggressive as a primarily debuff-aspected set and that helps offset the heal's deficiencies when people will work with me.
Then again, I've never done any iTrials or the like so take my comments with a grain or a pound, as you will. =)
I have no comments on the poison-healy thing as I have never used it.
