Quote:A couple of years ago my Tank met a Brute while running around Bloody bay for the exploration badges. 10 minutes later, we decided to go our separate ways since it became obvious that neither of us could defeat the other on our own.A blaster and a tank going at it? Goodness that'd take awhile.
On topic: I don't PvP in this game because the powers system wasn't designed with PvP in mind. Actually, I don't really care for PvP in MMOs in general, since there need to be abilities like crowd control for PvE that just don't add fun to PvP. Either the Mez lands and the target gets to sit around not doing anything until it wears off, or it doesn't land and the Mezzer doesn't feel like they are contributing anything. This extends beyond the big name MMOs, there's a Flash collectible card game (with a PvE campaign where you can earn some of the cards) I was playing where the PvPers were complaining about the ability to "stun lock" opponents. Please note that I'm just using Mezzes here as an obvious example, there are quite a few other abilities that contribute little or nothing to the enjoyment of one or the other type of play.
PvP game design is based on providing balanced encounters where each side has a (theoretically) equal chance of winning. PvE game design is almost always about unbalanced encounters, either one player versus a swarm of minions or many players versus one raid boss, with the player being supposed to win most of the time. These two design philosophies do not mesh particularly well. So if I want to PvP, I tend to load up a game that was designed for it from the ground up, like Team Fortress 2. -
Well, changing my password on the PlayNC site didn't produce any changes in behavior. I don't post that much (as my post total compared to my join date would tell you) so it wouldn't be too much of a problem to just check once a day to see if the glitch fixes itself as mysteriously as it occured, and just use this other browser if I need to post.

I haven't had any problems previously, and I've been using chrome as my primary browser since I got it months ago. The only thing that I know of that changed this morning was that java had an update. But I'm not sure how that would have effected anything, since I only enable it for websites that need it, and the CoH forums don't. Javascript, yes, but the actual java plugin, no.

Starting this morning, when I try to log in to the forums using chrome I get the "thank you for logging in..." redirect screen and then when the page reloads I'm not logged in. I am having no problems accessing the site through Firefox (it's what I'm using to post this) so it seems to be a Chrome specific problem. I've tried clearing both my browsing cache and all cookies related to boards.cityofheroes.com, but there has been no change. Any ideas for a next step?

This is why I keep trying to work on my humor writing. Not that this piece has anything to do with comedy other than that Steelclaw has written both, but it still made me renew my commitment.
Why? Because it reminds me of a fact that I've seen time and again: those people who truly and consistently evoke laughter in their audience are just as facile with other emotions. Bravo sir, bravo.
(also, your later post reminded me {actually, now that I think of it, the story itself too...} that one sketch or even one page isn't enough to necessarily discover the essence of a character. I should probably take some of my characters and get to writing...) -
Easy to implement, yes. But one of the things that the devs said when they implemented the moving tails was that with the engine they are stuck with, they were concerned about a possible performance hit. I don't know if they came up with an alternate way of doing them that was computationally cheaper, or whether they just datamined and determined that the resulting effects were acceptable, but it's something to keep in mind. It would be fairly trivial in a single player game but in a massively multiplayer online game, however, there are a lot more considerations than just ease of coding.

Quote:My problem with such effects (although I've only been hit occasional with such) is that my graphic settings are too high, rather than too low. The warning effects may be tagged with priority, but when all of the burn patches, bubbles, ice slicks, and so on are also drawn I have to look sharp to catch the targeting FX. Easy enough to do in the Keyes, because of the big friendly letters on the screen telling me to look for it, but in Apex battle maiden's blue circles are un-warned and much more frequent. Admittedly, on a tank they are also not instant death, so if I miss the circle I can just move away after the swords fall. All of the "move or die" FX powers should be tagged with a priority on them to make them draw first before any other FX, so those people with lower graphic settings will still see them even if a million other things are going on.
If you find this isn't the case, please report the bugs so we can remedy that.
But yeah, high graphic settings can be worse for seeing stuff like that on large teams than low settings would be. -
So, it looks like people are saying my perception is mostly coincidence, probably with a side helping of confirmation bias. That's actually the result I was hoping for, since I couldn't think of any good reason for it to be otherwise.
As for the Inf earned per roll, I did specify "when I don't get a lucky roll." My playtime is spread across many alts, so I don't actually sit down and turn in merits that often. This makes the times I get something really good into much more . . . singular, experiences. I'm absolutely sure that if I started keeping records it would turn out that I am coming out ahead, as shown by the math of many here on the forums. Just as, if I went through and pooled the money from all the character I play regularly I might actually finish slotting enhancements into one of them -
This is just idle curiosity, but when looking through the market I realized that the Luck of the Gambler global recharge IO was at the exact same price it was when I last had reason to check, and moreover, had been that price whenever I checked for at least the last year. I was wondering what people thought was the reason for such remarkable consistency. Coincidence? A (relatively) small pool of players generating most of the supply and roughly agreeing on its value? Consistent demand due to people trying to make powers perma? Most builds having at least one power that can slot defense and there being very little that is better to do with a single slot? Something else? All of the above?
I admit that I am part of the problem. I take random rolls with my merits rather that increasing the supply of the sure thing. I think of it a performing a service for the community since usually half of the recipes I get have more bids than supply, and usually at least once a month I get something where the supply of either the recipe or the crafted enhancement has gone to zero. But I also know I'm taking a 30 to 50 million Inf hit (when I don't get a lucky roll) on each LotG's worth of merits. And I'm also helping keep the prices on these other recipes from climbing while usually NOT contributing to the supply of the top sellers.
At least, I don't also contribute to the demand for now. When building a high end enhancement list I know I can get 10-15 other good enhancements for the same price, and can even get a number of the less popular purples for less, so the LotGs are far down on my list of choices. -
Quote:Another possibility is to go with the praetorian meaning for "inf", information. Personally, I think it fits better for most character concepts whether hero or villain, praetorian or primal.Good point. Influence itself is kind of a weird idea in general, and many people interpret it in many different ways. Is it money? Some kind of IOU? A stipend from the city? Am I doing favours for the city? Influence is where I'd really have to think sideways, but I think it can be done. Picture the following:
Through her small selection of friends, Star has had a "Hero ID" issued to her. She didn't do it in person, her friends just took her specs to City Hall, pulled some strings and legalised her activities. As such, she has an account with all the registered stores in the city, and that account gets credited every time she does something that the city benefits from, a form of quid pro quo stipend. Whenever she needs any kind of "shop" services, she can just enter the store, flash her ID card and the employees essentially let her rummage around the parts bin or use the equipment in the back, then charge her account on the way out based on what's missing from their inventory or what the records on their tech show. She doesn't really have to speak with anyone so long as employees just keep out of her way.
The way I would see it working is something like this: As Star runs around doing things, she's gathering information on how her various mechanisms are working, and then she goes into a Cook's Electronics to model what the effects of a potential improvement would be, using whatever device on hand bears the greatest similarity. Thus it's not that she is currently using 13 cybernetic eyes, but that she has modified 13 of them to find the current batch of settings she is using with her own optics. Those friends of hers helped smooth over the ruffled feathers from the first few times she did this, and now the employees in the stores have standing orders not to interfere since the parent companies want to study the modified devices she leaves behind to see if they can reproduce any of it.
If this fits, it has the added benefit of reduces her need to interact with the employees to just pointing at what she wants taken out of the display case, and removes her need to have some form of nebulous "account". -
Well, I can't speak for the rest of the forum goe-ers but this certainly clears up my concerns about the revamp
Still much spikier than the original, but now it's not spiky instead of the original look. And as Blizzard Entertainment, Games Workshop, and several others could tell you, spiky never goes out of style. -
1142. I found that I really don't care for super reflexes. But I like the character idea so much that I really ought to remake her with a different secondary. Willpower? Have they ported ninjitsu over to scrappers yet? But that's too much like Super Reflexes, isn't it? It's too hard to pick one, maybe I'll just let the time offline accumulate some more...

There are a number of powers in this game that I like, but I feel that I am fully justified in liking them. The one that I may like just a tad too much would be Power Burst. Just something about that animation combined with the knockback... Especially if it finishes off the enemy. I've had some really cinematic ragdoll scenes result from it, and I find myself trying to set up others, which is why I say that I am probably too enamored with it

I would have the full team "working" on problems one and two for the first update, since they are related. All the actual coding time would go into problem one while the spare moments of programmer's block and the like would be spent examining the perception gap. Do the vocal players have a playstyle that doesn't mesh well with Shepard's Crook so that they aren't the ones who play it? Similarly, (or even identically, maybe) is there a simple defense against Cannon of Justice that these players are forgetting about/not bothering to use? Is it just a flavor-of-the-month thing, where next month Cannon will be forgotten as these people move on to the next uber-build, one that consistently beats the Cannon users? (which would definitely be Shepard's Crook if we don't fix it, maybe even if we do)
In the meantime, If Arcanasberg has shown themselves to be trustworthy, I'd send him/her a PM asking them not to publicly apply their number crunching abilities to Shepard's Crook until after the next update in exchange for the promise that unless another emergency pops up, Meeklings will get buffed in the update after. I'd also ask for their analysis of the Cannon situation, since sometimes an outside perspective really helps. Maybe it's a display bug, and the powers-development lady has looked at what the power actually does and hasn't noticed that the numbers that show up on the screen/in the combat log are different?
And then I'd keep that promise for the next update, even if it wasn't made publicly, because if so few people are using the Stay-at-Home system then the development time we spent on it in the first place was mostly wasted. It's quite possible that it was, but maybe we can get more people to give it a try if we show that we care about the sub-section with a well reasoned buff. (accompanied with a revision of that tutorial that few people finish, if we can spare the manpower) -
The RNG is . . toying with me. With my fire/fire tank my solo-ability varies wildly depending the which groups I'm facing. Yesterday my tip missions were against groups like the council and Nemesis, where I can crank it up to x7 or x8 and I got jack from it. Today I'm facing Psi heavy groups and have dropped it back to x2. I've gotten 2 purple recipes and 4 rare salvage out of two missions so far...
I almost afraid to turn in an Amerit today... but I will, just to see if I get the worst possible results or what .
Edit: ah, I appear to still by in cat toy mode. My roll got me a gift of the ancients 7.5% followed immediately by a luck of the gambler . . . the cheapest one. But it looked good at first glance as it scrolled past. And 3 pieces of junk that I doubt I could give away. Oh well, I suspect something like that would happen. -
I'll try to be there. I really ought to group more with my fire/fire tank, especially with the way they're starting to . . . encourage it

Quote:I don't read it like that at all. The way it looks to me is that they want to test the effects (either technical or social) of adding in the capability, and wanted to limit the speed of adoption. This way they've got a small but steadily growing pool of people with access so that they can make any tweaks needed before making a base item or accolade power. This one strikes me as a bit odd for two reasons, the first of which is above. The second is that it's access to a slash command rather than a "click power" set up by the devs. Yes, we can just macro it, but that doens't detract from the fact that it's the first time a vet reward has been "just" a slash command.
To me, it feels like the Devs suddenly realized they needed a reward and this one got tossed on the table. That's not to say it's not an ability I WANT, just that the above two factors give it that feel.
I could be wrong, but that's how I read it. -
So we've got two suggestions of fire, and two of mind control, and the pairing does take care of my reservations about the dominator archetype. /Fire makes much less use of melee that some of the other assault sets and Mind/ has sleeps instead of immobilizes, which would get me lockdown quicker when soloing. Plus, an ancillary set called "primal forces mastery" sounds about right for someone who is trying to get beyond this whole having-to-cast-spells thing and is starting to succeed. (too bad power boost is only in the controller version )
Actually, a Mind/Thermal/Primal controller would fit as well . . . no, I've got too many characters with thermal already, between the three archetypes that have it.
I'll hold off on making the character for a week in case someone happens to get an inspiration that I like. -
Quote:See, that there is my problem. Too many choices. Since the goddess was the one in control, I didn't flesh out the sorceress part much beyond a personality sketch, so controlling plants and tossing lightning bolts around seemed equally likely.Really, though, it's magic and your options are just about anything.
So, one vote for mind control "feeling" right, any one else have a thought? -
Looking at the original post date, I seem to be a little late to this party, but what the hey. I generally look to the single origin enhancements when I have trouble deciding between two (or more) origins. That is to say, what makes this being stronger? Sure, you still may have multiple possibilities, for example Batman could be tech because he keeps upgrading his gadgets. However, most people can agree that he gets the most benefit from his relentless training, and thus he's natural in origin.
So, do you gain power from upgrading components, the action of chemicals/radiation upon you, or simply practice with your abilities? -
(yes, I know that this is an odd forum to ask for it in.)
Okay, my main is a fire/fire/fire tank who, since day one, has had as her backstory that she was an aged sorceress who made a deal with an ancient, forgotten fire goddess. She would let the goddess use her body to try and recruit new followers and regain her powers, in exchange for renewed youth. I've decided that Incarnate status qualifies as sufficient power for the avatar to be able to exist without its mortal host, which leaves the sorceress with her requested young body, a closet full of spandex, and the memory of what it feels like to have godlike powers...
Obviously, she's now going to be obsessed with building her personal power to the point where she can try tapping into the well of furies herself. With her impure motives she will most likely find herself walking the path of the vigilante, or even that of the rogue, though I doubt she would fall as far as villain. (unless necessary for game mechanics, i.e. to have a villain powerset) The question is, what sort of powers does she possess?
The epic archetypes are easily ruled out, as are "device" based sets like assault rifle and archery. She's looking for personal power, so mastermind and controller seem less likely. I don't see her having had any particular affinity for fire before this, but maybe she picked one up. Willpower seems to fit the concept, but that locks me into a melee archetype which doesn't fit so well with someone who is mortal and knows it.
So, any suggestions? I have played and enjoyed all archetypes, although there are only a few poweset combinations I like for stalkers and dominators. And the reason I posted this question in this forum, is in the hopes that the respondents won't pay too much attention to whether the sets that they suggest are "good" or not -
Well, my first (and thus far only, curse you altitis) heroside level fifty is a fire/fire/fire tank that has been an avatar of an ancient and almost entirely forgotten god of fire since about six months after launch... (ie, that's when I made her, not when she made 50. that was only about a year ago)
I have a couple of other characters that might fit into a deific mold, but they are not among those that are even close to fifty. -
Same problem, I'm connecting through AT&T dsl in Ohio.

Hmm, I wonder how I missed it up until now? Oh well, I was afraid that this might be the case. It's why I chose the thread title that I did.
