OK, you got me there. You have slightly better endurance recovery than the equivalent DM/SD. OK, yeah, but woo.

perma build up levels of damage buff - DM/SD has Soul Drain too, even if it's not up quite as often. And Against All Odds is blowing you away.

both massive single target and aoe damage - not nearly as much as DM/SD

regenerates 41 hps/sec - You must be including Siphon Life here? Yeah, DM/SD gets that power too.

more than softcapped - ditto DM/SD

softcapped with defense debuff resistance - ditto DM/SD with the right build

Nobody's saying that DM/SR is bad. Nobody is saying it isn't good enough. I have one myself, and it's an excellent combination. But I DM/SD is BETTER than DM/SR in almost every way. Giving a list of DM/SR's good points, when almost all of those good points are equaled or bettered by DM/SD, doesn't support your argument, assuming you're arguing that DM/SR is at least as good as DM/SD. But if all you were saying was "I don't feel threatened by Shield Defense", well, nobody can argue with that, since it's just how you feel.
Actually what is being said repeatedly in this thread is that SR is worthless because of SD. Matter of fact the title "In the Age of IO's, is SR obsolete?" is a pointed way of trying to say just that and badly disguising it as a question. Here's a better question "In the Age of Scrappers that can layer defense and resistance on top of each other have a self heal and outdamage almost all blaster combination's are blasters obsolete ?". See both of those aren't questions so much as manifestos.

Anyway the unasked or possibly disregarded part of this is just how much effort does it take to make SD surpass SR, how does SR compare at comparable levels of expense ? As I said way back in this thread SD's greatest power is the power to absorb nearly limitless amounts of INF. But back to your comparisons re recharge and the ability to spam siphon life fast unless you are in a situation where you have little to no risk of death the ability to trade damage for survivability is pretty important.

  3. Yep SR is totally destroyed by Shield charge and resistance builds. I mean it cant have a build that has perma hasten, perma build up levels of damage buff, 4+ end recovery/sec, both massive single target and aoe damage, regenerates 41 hps/sec all the while being more than softcapped with defense debuff resistance and isn't even fully optimized.

    Very threatened by AAO here.

When the prices drop due to people taking random rolls from earned A-merits, I'm not sure whether they'll be worth that.

Might just about be worth it if there are pool A recipes that cost a fortune, are direct purchasable with 1 A-merit, and the prices don't crash quite as hard.

HVMs are actually worth up to 120 merits seeing as 2 will let you direct purchase things that you want at the level you want.

Numinas miracles, lotg +7.5 etc at the lowest levels, would normally be 240 merits are now 2 HVMs

So its 140 merits = 40 million inf or ~= 300k /merit currently merits convert at 650k/merit so untill prices drop by more than half this makes sense.

I expect max level items will be flooding the market so badly that the devs will have to nerf this.

Does anyone remember merit duping and the market shutdown to pull lotg+7.5s after merits were introduced ? I don't think it will be as bad or as fast but its going to be there.

SD is a beast even without IOs. The entire argument that it's somehow balanced around having lower survivability to make up for the higher damage capabilities gets thrown out the window rather quickly when you realize that the additional damage you're getting allows you to kill things substantially faster than they're able to kill you. It doesn't matter if you have lower survivability if the additional damage capacity you get let's you kill things fast enough that your lower survivability doesn't matter (which is definitely true where SD is concerned) and, in fact, actually provides you with a higher level of survivability because you're exposed to such a proportionately small amount of damage.

If SR is actually allowed to maintain even remotely close to the same degree of survivability (which, when you're softcapped, pretty much means "how much DDR do you have?"), while maintaining every other imaginable advantage, there's not much point in arguing balance. SD is massively overpowered. I've played SD, and I've crunched the numbers for it. It doesn't matter how you try to spin it: SD is overpowered (why do you think everyone and their cousin is putting together builds and/or toons with SD?) and not by a little bit.

Everyone is building SD toons because shield charge is a very nice power and when you go to make a new shield charge toon there is no warning that the powerset is under review and will likely be changed soon.

If you don't have insps or a build up power AAO fully saturated contributes about 28% of total damage output, if you have a buildup power that's down to about 24%. Not really such a big deal seeing as you have to 10 enemies tin a tuant aura to get it, and its time average in combat will be less if you are actually killing things.

Simply removing the ability to enhance the DDR in Active Defense with HOs would go a long ways toward doing that (though that would require Castle actually deciding that his new sets shouldn't blow everything else out of the water).
Yes Shield Defense's ability to absorb more inf than would normally be spent on half a dozen builds to achieve what SR easily manages while having lower recharge does blow super reflexes out of the water.

  13. The best answer is don't park, let your character get up to 50 where its earning potential is vastly greater and buy things from people that did park. Seeing as they have the altruistic bent of giving things away at less than their real cost be a sport and oblige them.

Not saying everyone on this thread is being so disingenuous but when someone is representing that a server is alive well when said server can't even muster up a Hamidon raid for a month at a time

In the earlyish period of the market, I used to get to level 6, and place my (ridiculous lowball) bids for a load of unique IOs. By the time I hit level 32 2 or 3 weeks later and wanted to slot them, I'd bought most of them (I never paid more than 500K and rarely more than 200K for a steadfast res/def for example, a friend got all 3 of the big healing uniques for like 10M total). If you want a nice brand new car and only want to pay $100, you're likely to be SoL in real life, but before the flippers arrived, you could get that sort of bargain in game if you had a modicum of patience.

A large part of the inflation and supply shortage has come with AE. That has distorted the drops significantly, and particularly the level of the recipes/enhs that turn up. Also it has decreased the amount of rare salvage that hits the market, as if you're trying to make cash then bronze rolling is better than rare salvage. It's much worse in the days of exploits when toons are going 1-50 very rapidly and not generating much stuff, but then wanting full IO builds.

There is actually a much simpler explanation for the change. The game population has been in decline and whats left is the hardcore. People with lots of inf and many potential outlets to sell an item don't need to let it go on the cheap because they need the money. Second the addition of merits means no one has to take random recipes at random levels. People can save their merits to buy items that they can price well and at level points where there is real competition for them.

At the height of the AE exploits rare salvage was incredibly plentiful. I made billions buying just about all tier 2 and tier 3 rare salvage for around 200k and selling for a million plus. (Yes flippers don't raise prices lol /sarcasm). Every day it would be log in collect what I had bought relist place another set of bids and I could usually do that twice a day. So AE isn't drying up the salvage supply, people just seem to be less willing to sell their recipes as recipes and are instead crafting them, and selling the crafted item for higher price. Once again consistent with game winnowing down to a hardcore.
  18. You really need to ask what can you do with the particular powerset not what can be done with the at.

Take a set like devices, the rate you lay down trip mines is going to be a major factor in your performance, frankenslotting just wont get you the high rates of recharge you need to pop out large minefields quickly. The same goes for a set like mental manipulation where having enough recharge will let you have permanent drain psyche and possibly bypass the fitness pool

On the other hand, with sets like energy manipulation or fire manipulation you can achieve much with just frankenslotting Boost range, power boost, fire sword circle, burn are all highly effective with just the limits from ED,

The problem is that most of the people still posting on these boards are perfectly happy with a company selling them something and then delivering something substantially different. When it comes to revisionist history its no different. The market merger had a long list of excuses why it wasn't going to happen* but they all seem to have been dropped into the memory hole easily enough. AE had Posi blaming players for things he was warned about before it went live.

Archery's tier 9 is actually a 90 foot ranged AOE. Being able to nuke at range every 60 seconds is very nice same goes for Assault rifle.

As was suggested above relying on a really good secondary will be important for you. ?Ment with will have nice synergy for you . The combination of Drain Psych/Psychic Shockwave /Psychic wail can be very useful. Even so you are going to need a decent epic Fire, Munitions, or electric come to mind. All three have holds, fire has rise of the phoenix, munitions has the LRM, and elec has its high resitance mini god mode click.
