My very first level 50 toon was a blaster, that was over three years ago and while I haven't deleted him, I decided after dinging level 50 that I never wanted to play another blaster again (this was in the days before IOs and I tended to end up with more debt than a Third World Country).
Since doing the rounds with controllers, masterminds, widows and tanks I have rethought and decided that I would like to revisit the world of face-planting damage and have decided to make a new blaster.
For concept reasons I have already decided on archery / devices and have played around in Mids to make what I think is a reasonable blaster who, when fully slotted, will have soft capped ranged defence and decent enough damage but I have a few questions:
1. I like to play solo so I need a build that can at least solo an EB and preferably an AV. Soft capped ranged defence is essential but do I also need Aid self? Is it an absolute necessity or can it be skipped?
2. My build has room for either Aim or Targetting Drone but not both. Which is the better power? Whichever one I take will be fully slotted with a full set of Gaussians including the "Chance for Build up" Proc. I have this slotted on my Widow and it does not seem to fire that often on a toggle power to be of any practical use so would it be better in Aim?
3. Which is the better power, Blazing Arrow or Fistfull of Arrows? I ask because I take one fairly early on in the build but leave the other to nearly the end.
4. Is Time Bomb really bad? I ask because for concept reasons I would like to take it but my power choices are fairly limited and if I have to skip it I will
Thanks for any help you can give me -
This may seem a bit off the wall, but I wouldn't rule out a mind/kin. I practically solo'd mine from level 1 to 50 and was pleasantly surprised at how much damage he was doing up to level 20. At low levels the single target sleep and hold really hurt. Throw in levitate, confuse, siphon power and siphon speed and you can cause a world of psionic hurt on very little endurance (particularly against the clockwork but thats another matter).
Or if you were worried about mob size, swap confusion for mass hypnosis (available at level 10). -

Red side, Westin Phipps' arc about the Freaks teacher, it's the one arc that really made me feel like an evil villian. I hate it and love it at the same time!

That one makes me feel dirty.... and not in a good way. Westin Phipps creeps me out. -
The best NPC quotes have to be the Villain Group Respec on the STF 3rd mission when you enter the Thorn Tree. All I can remember is one of them saying "I have no Map". But its very funny and unexpected

Awww, a fellow Commodore!
Falcon Patrol!, Koronis Rift!, Manic Miner!, Staff of Karnath!, Spy Hunter!, The Way of the Exploding Fist!, GhostBusters!, Attack/Revenge of the Mutant Camels!.

I actually had all of those games!
/em wallow in nostalga
How can you include Manic Miner and leave out Jet Set Willy 1 and 2? And dont forget Frogger, Chiller, Ghosts and Goblins, Gauntlet, The Last Ninja 1, 2,3.... I could go on all day -
Until recently it was Summer Goddess, my fire/rad troller. I levelled her slowly from 1 to 50 and by the time I got to 50 I felt as though I knew her inside and out (so to speak).
But recently she has been knocked off her perch for Ace of Hearts (Mind/Kin). Not only because he was fun to play but I loved the concept behind him.
Both are badgers and both are 50 but if I had to choose I think Ace would have the edge. -
IMO the villain arcs are just better written than the hero ones - with the possible exception of the Faultline arcs which are great fun to play and probably because Faultine and Villain arcs came at a much later date than the original game. This does raise the question as to whether or not some of the older arcs should be revisited, rewritten and made more.... well.... fun. Its a shame MA only caters for five mission arcs or I would have a go at some of them myself
Case in point - The Freedom Phalanx TF's are well overdue an overhaul. -
Number 2 is tempting but I have to say, on the whole:
1. No
2. No
3. No
4. No
I still get a sense of achievement from getting to level 50 honestly and without powerlevelling -
Seer Marino - "Oh Wretched Man!"
Vernon Von Gruns Arcs - All of them specially when he goes "Laugh with me...."
Sciroccos Patron arc involving Serafina thats a good one as well (and gutted that cant have Serafina as a character in AE)
Just my two penneth! -
MOSTF and MORSF without a shadow of a doubt. I see them as a sign of a good player (or extremely lucky)
-
Personally I would have said Earth or Ice - both have some good lockdowns and ices slowing effects are not to be sniffed at.
Mind is great (I have a level 50 mind controller) but I have to agree with what Knightly said - the sleeps really not effective in group play.
EDIT: BTW if you want to light an oil slick cheaply, the magic inerhent power, Charm, deals energy damage so that would work nicely. -
.... and this one is slotted for defence

After many months of toil and effort I finally managed to get Ace of Hearts to level 50 (he hit level 50 with 466 badges under his belt btw - not a bad achievement) and to celebrate decided to make Ace of Diamonds. He is an illusion / force field controller (one day I will make something else other than controllers.... I will.... I promise).
Having got Diamonds to level 6 I decided that he was a fun toon and a keeper. So I loaded up mids hero designer and thought how I would develop him.
I have discovered that I could potentially take him down two separate routes both of which seem perfectly viable without too much gimping and both have their pros and cons:
1. Slot for recharge
2. Slot for defence.
The first route is obvious, normally my controllers are slotted for recharge as more recharge = more use of powers = better control = ownage. With Mids' help I discovered I can feasibly slot Diamonds to get PA to about a 70s recharge (with only 10 second downtime), flash, blind and spectral wounds firing at a rate of knots and more spectral terror than a horror movie. Great. Problems - expensive (four LOTG needed), not much use of the bubbles and only real comes into its own when I can get a few purples in the build.
So I then looked at defence. This to me seemed more interesting. I can use superior invisibility, dispursion bubble, hover and combat jumping and slot the lot for defence and (with a few more defence bonus IO's) I am pretty much soft capped on ranged and AOE defence. Add in force bubble meaning that melee attacks are negated and I have pretty much made a tankroller (if such a thing is possible). The idea here would be to switch on force bubble, use it to force enemies into a corner and then use Phantasm (who has ranged attacks) to take them out while I taunt using provoke from the power pools. The build shouldnt be as expensive as my recharge build. In theory sounds great but on the downside, PA's recharge is over three minutes, I dont know if force bubble will effect an AV/EB and I dont know if my overall damage output will be as high as I would like it.
I will post both builds for consideration later (in work atm) and would welcome all comments.
Oh, and just so you know my style play is as follows:
1. I play for game content, which means seeing as much as possible. Lots of ghosting and soloing early on (at least up to level 30) - illusion / force field was MADE for ghosting!
2. Because I solo A LOT I normally rate the effectiveness of my controllers by their abilities to take out AV's (or EB's given that I play heroic).
2. Hate PVP and only enter the zones for collecting the badges
3. I collect badges
4. Prior to level 30 its rare that I will team unless on a TF, Respec, Trial - but my build must be capable of both soloing AND working in a team for when I do one of the above.
Please feel free to comment. As I say I will post the builds I had in mind later so you have a better idea of what I had in mind. -
The obvious way would be to respec and take challenge or provoke from the presence power pool (or both if you can) and try to fit that into your build somewhere. You will need to slot it though to keep aggro.
Thats what I would do but having said that my fire/rad has yet to take on an AV solo so its just a theory.
Theres two IO enchancements that you can slot into your pets that gives them a 5% defence increase. Its small but does help. You could try that as well. Cant remember the name for them at the moment though -
I'm a badger but also enjoy MA. I have to say I welcome the decision and honestly I wont mind if I loose some badges if it means that MA was used for what it was intended for - which I understand was to create storylines and not get someone from level 1 to 50 in less than three days. The obvious way to get round this would be to remove the xp, as previously suggested.
But the problem remains that if you remove XP from MA missions, few people would play it.
In addition, since MA came out the prices of common salvage at Wentworths has been rediculous to say the least! While I understand that paying upwards of 1m inf for rare salvage is acceptable, you should not have to pay 20-30,000 influence for a piece of common salvage - which is becoming more the norm. Even pieces like inert gas and military cybernetics (that used to retail for 100inf a piece) have gone up over the 1000's. The reason? Everyone farms MA which has no salvage drops and therefore salvage becomes rare and expensive.
So, if the devs removed or halfed XP in MA but allowed drops for both salvage and recipes (and made the drops more frequent than normal missions), they could potentially kill two birds with one stone. In addition it would prevent farming missions in MA.
You could even have rare tf recipe drops for completing three, four, or five mission storyarcs to encourage more people to play.
Its just a thought. -
I've always liked Nemesis, despite the fact they are a pain in the **** for my poor mind controller.
Carnies are cool for the sheer Spooky Circus thing
But my favourite is Arachnos. Never get bored of them -
I humbly submit my arc for a poster:
Arc Id: 97374
Name : The Fall of Arachnos (Part 1) - Et tu Sands?
Description : Travel to a not so distant point in the future where you bare witness to a string of events that start the downfall of one of the biggest and prolific villain groups of our times - Arachnos
Please note this is the first of a three part saga. Parts 2 and 3 in development. Contains AV's but can be solo'd because you get help.
For your information the arc concentrates on Arbiter Sands. Also contains the death of Ice Mistral and revenge enacted on by Scirocco. Dont want to say too much because I would prefer it if you played it first (nothing like a bit of shameless plugging before the artwork comes out ) -
Hi all,
Ace of Hearts here. Can I just say that I am going no where. In fact, when everyone else goes, I'll probably be the person that turns off the lights -
Submitted for your approval Master Zaprobo, the Fall of Arachnos (Part 1) - Et Tu Sands. Its the first of a three part saga (parts 2 and 3 currently in development). ID Number 97374.

I dont know if I dare do it but Col would you mind reviewing my arc - its story number 97374 "The Fall of Arachnos Part 1 - Et Tu Sands".
Its the first of a three part story - feedback most welcome -
Sarge I dont know if this is any help to you but if you ever need a debuffer and a filler Summer Goddess is usually available Sunday nights - she has the badge so no point in taking the space of someone who hasnt got it yet but happy to step in if you need it.
I really should work on getting Ace of Hearts to 50 so he can try it -
It was an excellent team and last night laid two particular myths to rest:
1. You have to have an EMP to do an MoSTF - WRONG
2. Scrappers struggle on an MoSTF - WRONG
Sgt.MP Lawrence is now something of an expert on the MoSTF. I've completed it twice with him leading and both times its gone very smoothly.
ALL HAIL THE SARGE!
