If we had way more room for bio info, it'd be something that would be nice as an "optional fill in" area I think. However, when I spoke to Posi as I was trying out the I16 stuff at the con, and asked "why can't we have more space on the bio?"
"You'd have to lose a power or two..." So... the way that the character info is stored is obviously in need of some upgrading. I don't know whether he meant merely on the ID screen, or actually "losing" a power because it won't come up in the program... I have no clue. lol. -
If it had a separate "base portal" that could lead to a designated raidable "zone"....
-
Think of the trainers and contacts as props, more than characters, because that's basically what they are.
While it would be cool to have Ms Liberty kick some rikti butt during an invasion, what if someone then needs to train? Where is she? Clickable? through people? Nah.
Every once in a while Back Alley Brawler would remove his namesake from Galaxy on test, and be found elsewhere with it. Which was pretty hilarious. However it wasn't that he was taking control over the character standing there, he just removed it from the visible game set. -
Quote:Right: the hardcore people. Had lots more non-hardcore people come in and said "hey that's a really good idea! I won't have to figure this out the hard way any more!" it may have been different. As it was, perhaps the content of the suggestions were more akin to "we want to keep winning and keep others from enjoying themselves" and less "let's get lots more people enjoying this event".The hardcore arena crowd provided extensive input, testing, and feedback to the devs on how to improve pvp. With i13, Castle basically flipped off that entire segment of the population and incorporated changes that were the exact opposite of what the pvp vets said were the best thing about cox pvp. The result was a further decline in the population.
Quote:Your basic line of thought is: hardly anyone pvps. Therefore hardly anyone wants to pvp. Therefore everything is fine as is and the devs shouldn't make additional changes to try to lure people into pvp. You look at the end of a long evolution and draw erroneous conclusions based on your own disinterest.
Quote:Pvp has always been plagued by developer neglect.
Quote:When the arena was hopping, it broke and they neglected to fix it.
Quote:Naturally people stopped doing it. Base raids happened regularly.
Quote:Then it broke. So people stopped doing it.
Quote:Zones were dominated by highly skilled teams of hardcore players, so casual players stayed out.
Quote:So they nerfed buffing and movement powers.
Quote:Many of the skilled players left and the pve-minded still stay out.
Quote:If the devs handled the pve game the same way they've handle pvp, the entire MMO would've failed long ago.
Quote:Why bother to work on pvp? To make it a better game as a whole.
Quote:To make it appeal to a wider variety of people. What's hard to grasp about that?
In order to appeal to a pvp-oriented PLAYER, a game really does need to be built from the ground up with PVP in mind. This is not one of those games. It's always been rather a joke in this game, that pvp isn't all that great. I've seen scathing reviews of it, and even the hardcore players who HAVE conquored the methods here, laugh at it at times. If it's such a joke, why defend it so hard when there are other, way more appropriate places to play pvp style? Other games - like Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress and Counterstrike - are ALL about pvp, and leave nothing much to the imagination there. But they have different styles of play too, admittedly in a much more restricted whole game environment.
But they were *designed for player versus player interaction*.
This game *was not*.
I agree that it should be "done right" if at all - but frankly, done at all is really the question. The arena is fun, the zones are... less fun but still functional and could very well be repurposed for coop instead of pvp.
None of the things involving improving pvp, however, would EVER include "letting pvp enter pve zones". (oh ho, SUBJECT LINE HERE, thought you caught me...)
Anyway - enjoy what you get. Because obviously, the devs DO hate you. And villains. And furries. So clearly you should adopt a furry, pvp villain as the mascot of "improve or die" ... >_> /sarcasm -
My last one, I took a screenie, decided what I wanted to change (it was all of one power, I removed teleport, and took flight instead, and then added combat jumping for defense) and actually it worked pretty well. But there were plenty of ways that I've screwed up respecs too, and I don't "do" respec trials for the specs - I have plenty of vet rewards for those. But still, a "partial" or "poolspec" would rawk.

Quote:Or, more likely, have an entirely separate system if you WANT to make a raidable base. Perhaps at the supergroup registrar, you can click "I want to make my base raidable" and that would then permanently key that base to ONLY have raidable pathing and such. obviously the code *exists* for it, it's not currently in use.I would be shocked if they ever get the base raids back up. Now that they have done away with base raid pathing, they would have to change the entire raid system or any base that wasn't built with raid pathing would have to be trashed.
But I dont' think they'd ever trash what we've been able to make so far without the pathing, they know plenty of us go nuts and make elaborate things. None of those are possible even in the slightest, with that other code. But there's no reason not to have both in this case. Splitting the codes and making them useful at the same time, I suspect, may be a problem - but they've got people working. One thing at a time -
Or those pesky citizens just walking around blowing your cover by telling everyone they know that their cousin's husband's sister in law was rescued on a top-secret mission of yours.

A good number of characters either don't have a "real name" or they don't have a "hero name". I run characters of both types - H'zardus is not her name, but she has no other title. Razi Sanger is an archaelogist, not a hero...
I understand the idea, just I don't think it's really necessary. Most RP characters I've seen have their stats including their name and such, written in their bio or linked to a web page. -
We don't get "villain parts". Most of the npc parts are designed specifically for those groups and for very narrow range of body types. Anything that goes on a Player character must pass a lot more rigorous testing and clipping is a major issue. While a lot of those parts WOULD be very keen - I absolutely agree - they're also not always practical to give to players because it would take too much effort to give them to us.
Remember that those guys aren't constructed in the same way our characters are. The devs don't just have a "character creator" like we do, for npc groups. They're built whole, their accessories don't change with a click, they're "baked in" so far as I know. So the art team would have to actually *create* a lot of those parts, they cannot really be imported directly.
It's a shame, but I think that's probably why we haven't seen some of those things. Also, for some, they should remain enemy-only - to give those enemies a really unique feel. We are unique enough sometimes lol.
I would like to see whole costume SETS made, "nemi soldier", "knives sister", etc - but I don't know how feasable that would be, if they're going to do something, they might as well go whole hog -
Quote:So... what you're saying is "there is not a teaming problem". No one "needs" an 8 man team, unless you're trying to start a particular tf/sf. Anything from a duo on up is "a good team" if everyone plays and has fun.Maybe, I dunno, I usually lead teams and I've found the new standard size is 5-6 members cause I won't make everyone wait for an extra 5-10 min while those last spots fill up. Can usually make an 8 man team in atlas in about 15 seconds though.
Quote:This just gets better and better. I am the only one that thinks that if there is a demand/need for guides for how to find a non-ae team that something might be a little off?
Quote:What part of Massively Multiplayer should I redefine so that it makes sense that finding a team should be anything other than the norm and very easy?
So really, I'm not sure WHAT you're trying to get at. And, also... what does this have to do with the subject of the thread? -
Which is why they often don't tell us what they're going to be putting out, until it's almost live. A lot of companies would be able to swipe ideas, and with enough money (blizzard) put them out earlier than the ones who thought of it first.
Myself I'll continue to enjoy Paragon's work, because having met these guys a couple times now, they really, truly enjoy what they're doing. They absolutely want the best product they can make. While I don't doubt that the other companies have some employees with experience, and with knowledge... I don't know that they have the same *passion* about their product.
I mean... Champions... was CoH2, then Marvel, now CO. That's... hardly "product loyalty" right there. That's "we'll take whatever we can get". It's sad.
Every one of Crpytic's employees - save Jack - who had been working exclusively on City of Heroes, when they split, came to work for NC. The whole crew. While they've got new people working now, they're being trained into an environment of dedication and quality. Wherever those people go after their stay with Paragon... their new employer will definitely have someone to value. -
Quote:The success of the booster packs pretty much says that for ten or twenty bucks, more parts will be done this way. I haven't heard about whether they're adding anything to the basic sets, but I imagine that they will, there's almost always something every couple issues, and I was told specifically there is MUCH more to I16 than just custom colors. So... dunno. So let me ask a question, does that mean we will see new animal parts for costumes as part of a booster pack, but not something the team is working on for all players? I think it would be cool to have more options because as we know, more options are always better..........

Quote:This. I would imagine that the entire code for base raids would have to change in order to allow/disallow per room.I think it would just be easier to have Arena Battle Terminals that can be placed in a base.
Cathedral of Pain and base raids ARE still on the radar. They aren't top priority but they're not off the shelf. -

No. It would have to be done in a way that wouldn't lose that chunk.
It already is. The way that the game is right now, is the ideal for the playerbase which exists. To disturb that would be disasterous. What you have suggested is exactly that: a disasterous disturbance in the game.
The number of players who actively pvp in this game IS miniscule compared to those who do not, or who only occasionally jump in. If this were not plain and simple truth, the PVP zones should be more or less hoppin, right? They aren't. THEY are the wasteland zones that people doooom about - there's hardly ever anyone in ANY pvp zones, and unless something is organized well in advance, Arena matches are pretty much never done at random.
The idea is not to force anyone to do anything here. The OPTIONS to do so are there, meeting that ideal. Any other method is entirely counter to the whole concept.
"Make PVP more appealing by x, y and z" might be a far better solution to draw people who do not regularly pvp, into the areas designated for it. That has already happened - and the hard-core pvp crowd flipped their collective wig over it. So... why bother trying to bring more people who would require way more 'attention to detail' when those same people are more than content to use the zones as-is, pve dominating pvp, instead of alienating anyone? -
Except that now there are several more people working on costume sets, and I was told by one of the devs at the comic con, to not be too surprised with the Natural set... >_>

Quote:Dammit I forgot to ask whether there would ever just be a FREEEEEM powerset. Laser eyes, energy blasts... freem all around. That's just silly... everyone knows all blasts go FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEM!
Seriously I think that's one April Fool's gag that got away from them heheh. -
Or just make it a zombie haven inside.

Indeed: with the new addition of the 60 month vet reward, it'd be very, very nice to be able to JUST respec the power pools, or just your enhancements, or just one powerset's order.

Provocative AND Practically not there!

yes really! -
Posi explained at the comic con panel (and to me separately because I asked) that they'd been working on power customization essentially from the moment they had enough staff and money to do so, before Novemeber of 07. They sat down and asked about what things they really wanted to put in the game, and what would it take to get it there. This was the top of the list. They've done that, I16 will probably go live before we know it.
Base raids and the CoP trial are, while backburnered, still on the list of things they're working on. It's a much more massive problem area for the game, it's not something that could be solved purely by the presence of way more wage slaves - it's something they have to actually *fix*. But, I was also assured that they are working on this too, it's not top priority, but it's there on their schedule.
However: neither of these things has anything to do with the release of CO. They've been on the game's schedule since they were first proposed, and ... well, frankly CO and DC don't HAVE anything to "keep up" with. This game's got something they will never have: Time live. COH has been here for 5 years, going strong, and according to Ocho - going VERY strong indeed. He couldn't tell me numbers but he did indicate that the player base was UP very much past their expectations. With the coming of I16 and Going Rogue on the table for a late year release (or early next year, but I'm gonna guess holiday on an off chance), the competition has got to keep up with THIS game. -
Quote:You should know better. They're out there, in missions.oh I can play this game. When I leave atlas the lfae broadcasts cease, in fact the only map chat is when I go by npc's and they say their lines cause all the other zones are ghost towns.
Quote:Prior to AE only a minuscule portion of the population farmed. They adapted pretty quickly.
Quote:When I leave Atlas for more than a few minutes with the intention of teaming I get sad and log off. Maybe playing on the server with the highest population has somehow skewed my perception, but less than 5 people in a zone != MMO.
Quote:And even though you are already saddled up on your high horse,
Quote:I'll just point out I don't want open pvp in this game. I used to. I used to want a lot of things for this game, but I'm content with everyone sitting in one zone confined to a 100x100ft room. It's fun. I know that sounds sarcastic and it should to actual pve'ers, but for me AE is the best thing that has happened to the pve game...possibly ever. -
>_> Why on earth would you want to be seeing so much Courier? in little doses it's cool, like for code and stuff... but... a whole forum of it? *shudder*
