The answer is no. No one *has* to be a part of the channel. As WHF said earlier, "You might be on to something if the channel were the only means of global communication in the game, but guess what? There's as many channels as you'd like to make, and you can go share your knitting secrets and talk about the weather and if Dirk will ever love Janet again after that affair all you want in one of those channels."

Why should you have to have the "fear" of being careful what you say, or who you say it to, because you might say or do the wrong thing and upset the wrong person? THAT to me is not a pleasent enviroment to be in.
If it's not pleasant for you, then don't be a part of said environment. Judging by the title of this thread, you've already gone ahead and made your own channel, with your rules, such that the environment you desire will be accomplished.

    So what's the problem?
  3. Wow, thanks for all the kind words folks!

Well, here I go to write a post of epic proportions.
***DISCLAIMER: THIS POST IS LONG. I CLEARLY DON'T KNOW WHEN TO STOP TYPING. I BLAME COFFEE... AND ASHCRAFT. Also, I normally don't do these things because there's always someone or something I forget to say. But here goes nothing.***

    *cracks knucles*

There are a lot of people on the Champion server I'd like to give a big thanks to for making 2009 a great year. In no particular order...

Cobalt Azurean: AKA Blueballs, there isn't a badge for this post, so I guess it ends here for you.

Cherry: You have come so far this year. I can still remember the first time I ran into you on the Hami taunt team at some raid many moons ago. You always showed interest and enthusiasm despite being a newer player, and had the stones to ask questions. Sooner or later you were leading yellow taunt, and subsequently raids, running server events, TFTs, PERC events. There are many capable players in this game, but few who are willing to step up to lead as much as you have. Wow babe, what a year for you! Continue to rock on.

Fanged Knight: You have a great attitude and a great sense of humor. I've thoroughly enjoyed working with you at the raids and getting to know you more over the past year. You always make me laugh. Thanks for your support and your company.

Horus: AKA Horusaurus, Sanspanticus, etc. What can I say? You're a great dude and have been a pillar in the SG for a long time. Like I told you, around the time you joined I had seen a lot of the old RdlVers leave for RL. You joined up and things kicked off again. You've always been a huge source of support and laughs for me. Your Scrapperitude is beyond comparison. As always, thanks for being a friend.

Cowboy Cutter: AKA Doom, DOOOOOOOOOOM, Nortado Expert Extraordinaire! You're probably the funniest person I know. When you log on, I have to make sure beverages in the near vicinity are in safe places. Despite being a goofball, you're easily one of the best players I know. You're a huge source of knowledge and a great team player. Thanks for the help over the years!

Kahlan: Well Christ, if other people haven't said it all already. But you're awesome not just because you wreck faces in this game beyond belief, but you're such a nice guy and always helpful. It's rare to find someone with that level of skill that's still so generous and understanding. Thanks for being you.

Ready Aim Fire: You're one cool chick. Right from the start when I met you on Fleur Noire, I loved your sense of humor. Long live RAAAAH! You're always fun to team with and plenty helpful to others.

Celestial Lord: You're a great person to team with, and have done an awesome job picking up RWZ raids. I'm always impressed whenever you step up to lead. I've enjoyed our conversations very much. All the best to you this coming year.

Cam: You rock, man. You're an amazing player. Thanks for hanging around so long in the SG.

Tom: It's been great teaming with you and leading raids with you. You're mature beyond your years, it's rather amazing. Hope everything goes well with your final year of school!

RdlV: I LOVE you guys. Some of you aren't around as much as before, but I still think about you guys. Yves, the HURTs, Calm Horizons, Bart, Rusty, Azurell, Tenknifefoot, Acious, Demobot, Rod, Jordo, Danny, Witters thanks for all your support and dedication over the past year. I'm truely lucky to have you guys as part of my SG.

AngieB: Could there be a cooler mom out there? Seriously. Mo's one lucky dude. You're a ton of fun and always lighten up any team you join. From back in the day when I met you on Millie Volt to recently having you as part of the raids, you've always been supportive and a great souce of feedback. Keep rockin' the ITF beer stein!

Nibs: I've enjoyed getting to know you better over the past year. I've enjoyed having you on Vent and your lively sense of humor always makes things fun! You've done great things for the server between Hami raids and PERC events. I haven't been able to listen to your show as much as I'd like, but I've had a great time listening to it when I got the chance. All the best!

To LES: You guys are a great SG and are always dependable when you show up to help with anything. Specifically, Trevor and Llewthor, you guys rock. Thanks for your help with the raids! Also to Kat, I have a lot of respect for all the things you've lead on the server. It takes a lot to co-ordinate so many events and they make our server a more interesting place. Also, thanks for your support when I started thinking about leading Hami raids.

Meowtch: I always love talking to you and teaming with you. Best wishes to you and Ace for 2010.

Acroyear: You've done a great job with Justice Force! Thanks for being a good neighbour.

Myrmydon: You gave me good advice a long time ago about leading an SG. Great to see more of you recently at the raids. Best of luck to you and BOSS.

Ashcraft: Thanks for your support during MA Mondays. Always fun to team with you!

NetMinder: You're extremely knowledgable and a talented leader. Rock on.

4shes: It's been great teaming with you the few times I have. We should do that more.

To Champion: I know I've left some people out of this. For those people, I owe you an eBeer or your choice of beverage. Thanks for being the best server EVAR! I look forward to spending 2010 with you all.

    Cheers,

    Amygdala

We assign targets the same way that you described, by targetting them first and having the Tank target through the team leader. We only use numbers 1-6 as a reference mostly between leaders on Vent, which simply refers to the order the yellows are attacked/defeated. This makes it easy to call out any stray aggro.

Cherry placed herself on #5 and #6, me on #4, and rookies on 1-3. See the problem. All the experience was on one side of the blob. My suggestions (after the fact) were to either place me on #1 and rookies on 2-4 so I could tail along covering if one of them falters or to place me on #2 for the same reason, I could watch #1, then tail along 3-4.
Actually, when I lead the yellow taunt team, most often I'll put the rookies on mito 1 because it drops the fastest, and with the RAs from the start, a team of Scrappers are best able to survive it if the Tank isn't able to find the target. (Of course, if there's enough of a delay from buffs to entry as you mentioned, this could be more problematic.) From there I try to alternate experience with new players. Perhaps putting you in the midst of the other players, like on 2 or 3, would have worked out better. However, for the most part, even new Tanks haven't had that much trouble picking up targets. Having a ratio of 2:4 (vet:rookie) is pretty common for most of the raids we've had. It's actually rare we have the luxury of 6 Tanks on yellow taunt. Most of the time Cherry and Fanged taunt 2 yellows a piece.

    This couldn't be more true.

Ok, i did not read all the replies nor do i intend to.
While this is your business, if you find the time to read responses posted by others, I think you'll see that most of the questions you've asked have already been answered, and the comments you've made do not apply.
  5. Hope you have a great holiday and a safe trip, Angie. I'll be sure to catch up with you when we're both back in Paragon.
  6. Sorry to hear the raid didn't work out. I've been out of town for the holidays and unable to log on. Otherwise, I would have been there to help.

I'd just like to say a few things in general...

In response to the following statement in Felecia's post:
    Quote:
I suggest you get advice from Amygdala, Cobalt Azurean, and Steel Brigade on how they do it successfully.
Since my name was mentioned, I would like it to be known that many of the leads at the raid, Cherry specifically, have been at just about every single raid I've lead, on Vent with me, and part of the ongoing raid discussion. We have been raiding for over year on a weekly basis, successfully each week, in about an hour or less. While we may be looking for ways to improve upon our current strategy, we're far past the point of learning how to complete one. Cherry started helping out a while ago in a leadership capacity on the yellow taunt team, then lead a few raids herself in the past without issue. I have no doubt she knows what to do and has the experience necessary to be a successful raid leader. Same thing applies to the dedicated group of people who help out every Sunday (you guys know who you are and you're all awesome. Much love. )

The strategy we use is extremely reliable and very flexible. Since I wasn't at the raid, I have no way of knowing what didn't work out. One thing does stand out to me though.
    Quote:
walking into the zone with your 8 man team, and several other aow people on their own team as well caused quite a bit of disruption.
One of *the* most important components of a successful raid is the forming of the teams at the begining. This accomplishes 2 things. First, it ensures that the necessary ATs are on each team. Performing a count of certain ATs is important information for the raid leader. Second, each team leader is generally on Vent and therefore connected to the raid leaders and the other leaders. This enables fast and accurate communication if something goes awry. I'm not pointing this out to blame anyone in AOW. I simply want to emphasize that if the raid leader asks you to break team with your SG mates, it's for a good reason, since the composition of each team isn't random. This isn't the first time people have been confused about why they can't be on a team with all their friends/SG mates.

Like I said, I can't comment definitively on what didn't work out this time. But regardless, I do think that this kind of reaction is unnecessary. As Steel said, sometimes raids fail. It happens. Luckily for us, it happens very rarely. Thus, with our track record, I say it's safe to let it go and move on.
  7. Just wanted to respond to a few things you said, Tamerlayne.

    Quote:
Sorry but I know most of those "hoops". In fact one of my main server's chanels has had issues from RMT'ers to Spam in all it's nasty forms to rude jerks to drama queens/kings to you name it...
Please don't assume that the issues you've experienced with channels on other servers equate to the issues we've had and the rationale behind how our main channel is structured.

    Quote:
What was the result? a Public Channel that everyone is AUTO-silenced once joins and only a mod can unsilence them, and also tripled the number of mods on at any given time - there was at most 1-2 mods on at any peak hour (EST) some times none and after was a minimum of 3 and during weekends upwards of 8.
While this is an interesting idea, we're not necessarily in need of a greater number of mods. It might work for some communities, but too many mods can lead to too many chefs in the kitchen. Also, it is possible that when too many people have OP status, less gets done because each OP assumes another will take care of it. Quantity does not necessarily equal quality in this case. For the most part, I'd say the mods we have do a fine job.

In general, please don't assume that your experience getting an invite is representative of the norm, and that subsequently, our channel is in need of restructuring because of it. Also realize that BMT of Champion is not the only chat channel you can join, as others have pointed out, and that ultimately having access to one is not necessary to enjoy the game, though it certainly helps.

Another suggestion: when looking to contact some of the more active, more prominent players on Champion, talking to PuGers isn't the most efficient way. Posting on the forums will surely grab the attention of someone who can provide you with what you need or connect you to right person.

Thanks for your suggestions and feedback and hope you enjoy your stay on Champion.
  8. Merry Christmas Champs!

Hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday.

  10. Congrats on your 50s folks!

Glad I had the chance to team with both Elizabet and Texas Trix. Masked Secretary, let me know if you start anything else on villains. I still need to get my Therm to 50 and will require team mates.
  11. I appreciate the post, Felecia, and hope your future events run smoothly.

    Hello Champion

    Welcome to Champion, Vivace!
  13. Sorry I missed it. Grats on another successful ball.
  14. Stunning. Amazing use of lighting too.
  15. Sorry I couldn't make it, Cherry. Had to go to dinner with the folks.

Grats on the successful raid though.

I defend her because she is genuinely trying to help others.
The word in this sentence that probably gets most people is ‘genuinely’. Most people doubt that this is the case because when she first started posting events, you couldn’t read the post without seeing AOW at least 5 times, even the CCs. Most people who run events do not push their SG upon you repetitively. It gives people the impression that your event is not for the community, but is instead a recruiting drive. (Note: this excludes anniversary related events, where it’s obviously appropriate to mention your SG.)

    Quote:
I don't like to see people attack her for not helping them in the way they want to be helped.
The issue here is that most people don’t ‘want to be helped’ in the way that she feels they should be helped. There is a big difference between helping someone out, and helping someone because you feel that the way they do things is wrong. A specific example of this would be when she tried to ‘help all the small SGs’ because she thought they were lacking in friends and ability. This was stated directly by her, and this is why some people resent her brand of help.

    Quote:
Sure, about 50% of her posts are not presented well, but she really does mean to do good.
The presentation of her posts has consistently had the undertone of ‘I need to save the Champion server.’ What people have tried to explain to her is that we don’t need to be saved. There are many people who help out on the server, and none of these people feel that if they were absent, the server would collapse. They do what they can to help to enhance our community, not to rescue it.

Regardless of what I think about the principles behind her events, I stand by the notion that the event host has the right to set the parameters of the event. It is their event after all. For example, if I wanted to host a clown suit raid only, then that’s my business. However, I probably wouldn’t host this event if I found out 90% of the server had a phobia of clowns (I believe the correct term for this is coulrophobia, but that’s neither here nor there). Point being, if you’re hosting something for a group of people that you genuinely want them to enjoy, it only makes sense to take into consideration the values and opinions of your audience.

One way or another, I'd like to get back into the AE next month.
The way MA Mondays used to work was that Champion players would post their arc IDs in this tread, and I'd go through them in order of posts. So running the event more or less consisted of keeping track of the arcs each week and posting the arc numbers in the Champion MA channel, and forming teams.

I originally started it when AE first came out and there was a large number of people on Champion who had made arcs but couldn't get them played for the feedback they wanted by enough people. So that's why several teams of people would run through them in order each week.

However, we noticed a steady decline of arcs being submitted as the event went on. For this reason, I think if we decide to start it back up, we may want to focus on a mix of arcs, some from Champion, some dev's choice arcs, like you suggested. I won't be picking it up until January, if at all, so if you'd like to get it started again and revamp the parameters of the event to make it more flexible or suited to what you're willing to do, I have no problem with that.

True story. I enjoyed this event but eventually had to cut back to focus on school.

However, today is my last exam! School as I've known it to be, classes and exams, will be over for good. Next term for me involves rotations, so my schedule will be quite different, and I imagine I might be able to pick up a few events come January, this one included.

I'm also looking at running more Hami raids, so I have a few ideas for the new year. I'll keep you folks posted.

Also, if peterpeter wants to pick this up, by all means. I'll list it in the Champion MA channel if you'd like. Just let me know.
