Personally I'm not that hepped on the idea of paying rent to maintain a base. Rent was one of the big fun killers for a lot of MUDs, and when I'm already paying "real" rent to play CoH, the idea of having to constantly play in order to maintain my base does NOT sound worth it.

Here Here!! NO RENT.
Ding-Dong
Wonder Woman," What is it Superman? Another global crisis? Another SuperVillian seeking to tear apart the very fabric of Time? It's Self?"
Superman, "I don't know WW I'll go see!" <leaps up heroicly from the couch, makes a pose, then answers the door>
<muted conversation from the doorway>
<Superman walks back into the livingroom slump-shouldered>
"We have to leave the Hall of Justice W. It seems we are a little behind on our rent."
Wonder Woman, "What!!?! We've saved the world over a hundred times! We are the protectors of the planet? How can we be evicted?"
Superman, " I dont know but the Sheriff is here."
<Wonder Woman's jaw drops open as she looks around at all the accumulated stuff>
Rent is not heroic. -

Every other MMO has base raids and such without the need for this appointment booking system. Even SWG had the solution of bases only being vulnerable during a 3 hour window each day at the same time which is kept secret and could be altered by placing the base again.
All I'm saying is that there are far better and less silly solutions than notifying the enemy that your going to attack at a certain time.
[/ QUOTE ]
Gah! I couldn't agree more. A three hour window would be sufficant. One of the really fun things for me in DAOC was to be doing something else and then over alliance chat read, "50 Mids (Midgaurd one of the three Kingdoms) in the frontier. Looks like a raid." The shock and suprise of the raid, the trying to get enough people out to defend the realm, the news coming over alliance chat, the chaos and confusion, ah those were the days. Wow now that was fun. It was fun because it was scary and suprising. It was fun because you had to rally and get your forces up quick.
I see one problem with this style of raiding with the superbase system. It isn't server wide. As a server we don't have a common goal of protecting an item or certain War walls or whatever. That's what I'd like to see in PvP a common goal for the server. With the Bases as we have them now, a window should be sufficant but a set time is nessiary because it's only the SG deffending and not the whole server.
I could see it now, "They are after the Ziggarat again! The forces on thier SG bases will double if we don't stop them! Gah Inferno can wait get to the Zig now!" -
All I can say is poor Synapse. He seems to be the red shirt of the bunch.
"Go <snicker> check out the building Synapse. "
"All over it!"
"Run this dynamite over to the bomb squad Synapse"
"All over it"
"Synapse, you lure them out side and we will stage an ambush."
"All over it!"
Poor, poor, Synapse his main contribution to the fight is to knock down his compainions.
On the other hand go Positron! Nice moves. -

Already have my Plane tickets/hotel reservations. Btw folks if you haven't gotten your hotel reservations yet um... start hunting NOW!
My gaming group voted to go to Orgins this year vs Gen con (we pick 3-4 small cons a year and go to one "big one") so this better be worth it . I was the one pushing for Orgins this year so my rep is on the line. So, any inside track on getting in the game?

the SS/SJ change and the fear change -- are relatively minor
[/ QUOTE ]
Not to me (the fear change). COF is the one power that let Spector fight the way a scrapper is supposed to fight, in the middle of things. I used it situationally sometimes for control, sometimes for the -acc debuff and sometimes not at all. When I first heard of the change to COF in I3 I thought it was brillant. It was an ability that was unique to /DA (scrappers)that allowed me to debuff my foes and make them cower before a hero who was half-in half-out of the netherworld. It fit conceptually and gave Spector a defense that wasn't equal to /SR and a resistance that wasn't equal to /Invuln but an acceptable blend none-the-less. The other sets that have fear (mind control, Illusion control and Dark defender) have many other tricks to work around the changes to fear. For /DA scrappers this was our biggie, our fulcrum shift, our nova. Now it's going to be changed, why?
That is the real question, why now? Despite what States said about fear being able to "lock down huge amounts of enemies" in the game environment it just doesn't happen. In a large group the AOE's flying around offset any "control" the power could give. Soloing, to use it for control you cannot use any AOE attacks or they attack you (al be it with a reduced chance to hit you). COF has a small PBAOE so anything out side of mele can still smack you around (alot). Forgive me if I'm sceptical that the changes were due to /DA scrappers being too powerful in PvE. Were we hearding huge amount of foes? Were we the last ones standing after a group wipe? Why? or Why now?
The changes to COF came about 3-4 weeks after I4 was on test. About this time there were many threads about the affects of fear in the arena. Lots of folks were complaining about Spectral Terror and being unable to "resist" fear. Forgive me if I am suspicious of the timing of this change. I don't see the logic of it in any other contex other than the changes were made for PvP.
I deeply regret that I did not speak up when the anti-fear threads were circulating on the test server/arena boards because now I am paying the price. I did not speak up because I thought that the devs would make another fix that would assist in the PVP part of the game. I thought they would add fear resistance to other ATs. Perhaps instead of having intimidation in the power pool they would change it to "bravery" or some other power that allowed a player to resist fear (make it inherant not a toggle). Then they could play around with villians having fear as a power. Or if they had a person with a fear power on the team allow the whole team to have a resistance to fear. Or have clear mind or O2 boost provide a resistance to fear. I didn't think that they would change the power that made me a "contenda" finally. Would the changes have taken place even if I had spoken up? Perhaps. At least I would have felt better about myself knowing that I did everything possible to try to perserve my AT.
Do I have any proof that these changes were made in response to PvP? No, of course not. I am not sitting in the board room when they are making these changes. I don't have a listening device anywhere in the cryptic offices. The timing of the change to an allready underperforming AT makes me suspicious though. Will I stop playing, hell no. I have lots of other alts and I'm still (even after a year) having a blast. Am I disappointed about my main, yes. -

Besides, we already have that in our game...
Every time I post, it's kinda like a riddle (wrapped in an enigma...)

Someday Statesman is going to post something so cryptic that even he can't understand it, and thus will begin his decent into madness. Months later he will emerge as the mad super-villain Anarchist in CoV...

Thank you for the choice not to put loot into the game. Thank you for making a game that I can play with my friends no matter what level we are. Thank you for not encouraging buff bots. Thank you for making the story the primary part of the game instead of an after thought. Thank you for making an MMO that is about something other than Elves and trolls and skinable rats.
Thank you for the changing scenery. Thank you <huggles the devs> -

Of course... then we all have to fight for the right to be on the table (aka.. gaming size usally around 10 people per GM (unless you have CO-GM) even 10 is hard to manage at times.
[/ QUOTE ]
In my College gaming club (this is not an exageration nor a lie) I had a friend who wanted us to try COC. I love horror and Lovecraft so I was elated. When the day arrived I saw many at the main gaming table. Then more players arrived and then more. When the counting was done there were 21 players at the table. It turns out that my friend had invited everyone in the club expecting that all wouldn't show up. Well...
He did run everyone. This is how he did it. There were several investigative possibilties in the game. When we went to investigate them he would move the players to the area of the table where most of the players who were investigating that part of the adventure were sitting. He walked up and down the table and would hit each group in turn. He kept a notepad with him and made over 30 pages of notes during the game. If you wanted to investigate something else that the rest of the people in your group weren't investigating, you were moved to the group that was there.
I was amazed and in awe of the man at the time and I still am today. The best part was the table where the indefinately insaine and dead went. We were having a hoot playing out our insanities in the city jail/morgue. -

guess it has been longer than I thought since the last time I played Champions. I don't remember it being complicated, or requiring a calculator. I remember "acquiring a taste for it" in just a few minutes. I guess I was just sick of AD&D type games that were about two steps short of rolling a die and saying "I win".
[/ QUOTE ]
Don't get me wrong loove Champions! I have two characters here that were direct ripoffs (to the extent I could muster) of characters in that game. Character creation though... good gods! Unless you had the computer character generator it was at least two sessions making characters.

First of all, it'll be a Unisystem game - but with tweaks to combat.
Secondly, I might be GMing games of it at the big cons (Gen Con, Origins, etc.) - so keep your eyes peeled.

Hehe.. thanks for the chuckle.
WOOOOT! I ran into a fellow that addapted Fueng Shui for COH (he did a damn good job too.) Now we will have the real thing. Considering Statesman's background I should've expected something like this. Eden has come up with some very solid game systems in the past that are easy to play and don't take a calculator (which is fine in mini's not so fine in RPGs IMHO) *cough* Champions *cough* I will be picking it up at my local game store.

I'd like to see solutions that make less people do unfun behavior but don't put additional penalties on the people who never engaged in the unfun behavior in the first place. Unfortunately, sometimes that simply isn't possible. With mission, though, maybe it is. AS it stands, each character can have no more then 3 missions at a time anyway. What if, in addition to tracking the missions that characters had while the character is offline, the game also tracked the number of mobs left alive in the mission when you last visited. Let's get a tiny bit more sophisticated and track the number of minions/lieutenants/bosses/AVs separately for each mission so that, we may not get the exact mobs right, but we can get the mobs approximately correct when you go back in. We could even recall the number of people that was in the team for the mission last so that it still adjusts the mobs based on team size. The upshot is that if you go into the mission after logging out or resetting the mission it doesn't really reset the mission. The mobs may get repositioned slightly, but there won't be any more mobs, so you can't farm missions. You can't behave in "unfun" behavior in this way. Yet, any benefits (badges, killing AVs, taking your time, doing the mission with a team of friends who don't all happen to be on when you get it, all of that is still possible.
Sounds reasonable?

I just love so much about this game that listing it here would add pages and pages to an allready longish thread.
Here are just a few:
Thank you for the altered maps with fire/flooding/ graffitti
Thank you for taking the time to code pidgeon poop on the benches!
Thank you for coding little details... I've been playing this game since release and I'm still finding things that suprize me.
Thank you for making this game casual friendly
Thank you for interacting with the community (how many devs go to cons?) How many devs even know that gaming cons exsist?
Thank you Thank you Thank you -
Woa, I didn't know there was a history with dundracon when I posted previously. I was just kinda hoping he would come and visit us.
(I have some much loved ((thus beaten upon)) Shadowrun books I would love to have him sign)
Now I find out he's going to be a few miles away while my Shadowrun books are going to be in Dublin.

Dragoncon dosen't = Dundracon.

Thank you for the look at the power and coming here to let us know what it will be. As long as the mobs don't run too far away I will be a happy camper.
