  1. Thanks to the DFB trial, my new brute outleveled her Atlas Park contact before ever taking any missions from her. Now that contact is inactive, and visiting her does not cause her to pass me on to a new contact.

Consequently, my brute is 12th level and only has one contact (Montague Castanella). This makes mission selection extremely limited. What am I supposed to do in order to unlock the usual lineup of Steel Canyon and Skyway City contacts?

Isn't this the same sort of problem we have already whenever two very different attack animations happen concurrently against the same enemy? For instance, Shadow Maul and Dragon's Tail.
  3. I've always wondered why there was no melee set, similar to Martial Arts, but which was based on throws rather than punch/kick. The idea would be that damage would almost always be Minor, while the main effect would be Knock Down (with animations designed to look like an enemy being grabbed and thrown to the ground, Jiujitsu or Aikido style). It would almost be a kind of melee-based control set.

Now, I figure this has gotta be doable from an animation point of view, and I don't see any problems with it from a mechanics/balance point of view (knock downs that fail to proc would just look like a failed throw). But would such a set be so unpopular that it wouldn't be worth implementing? How could it be made interesting enough to be at least as popular as, say, spines (which I don't see that often compared to other scrapper power sets)?

I find this a bit curious because the CoX game system is built upon one structure after another that dictates to you how to play, and in order to have fun with this game at all we have to find a way to accept, if not enjoy, the boundaries of these structures.

For instance, we have archetypes that channel play style into narrow team-oriented roles (DPS, tanking, buffing/debuffing, crowd control). Power sets deliver powers in a fixed order. New enhancement slots are delivered according to a fixed schedule, interleaved with the acquisition of new powers according to a fixed schedule. ATs have only a limited list of power sets to choose from (though, granted, power proliferation stretches the waistband a little bit with every update). Incarnate abilities are unlocked according to a fixed tree-like structure. Some power effects have no corresponding enhancements (e.g., there is no Res or Regen debuff enhancement). There are arbitrary mph limits on travel powers. ED narrows the list of effective enhancement strategies, etc., etc.

The idea that special secondary effects only proc if you successfully execute a particular chain of attacks is hardly paradigm-breaking, or any more restrictive than much of the rest of the game, IMO.
  5. Completing this TF is supposed to unlock the Roman themed costume pieces. Is that still true post-Freedom? And if so, does it unlock those pieces account wide or only for the character that completes the TF?

How do you enter DFB without using the LFG queue? I didn't know there was any other way! (I guess I'm an ignoramus in the opposite direction)

I mean, if everyone who was interested in doing the DFB trial simply used the LFG, then forming teams ad-hoc would be utterly unnecessary since you'd already have everyone who would otherwise form a team the old way already registering themselves more directly.

In fact, I'm thinking that this queueing mechanism might be a great way to implement team-forming for everything, not just trials. A team leader wishing to form a team could simply create a new Team Forming entry in the queue, perhaps with a tag that indicates the kind of missions to be run (standard, radio, tips, AE, farm, TF, trial, etc.) and optional level ranges. Then people could try to join these teams sort of like they were trials to queue up for. There could even be an option for the team leader where s/he is notified each time someone tries to join--providing name, AT, and level--and they have the opportunity to accept or reject that player (again, this would just be an option and not necessarily the default).

This would possibly solve the problem of F2P players not being able to use /tell to indicate interest in a team forming (via the old school /broadcast method).
  7. Okay, so then it really is just a case of folks not knowing about the LFG trial queueing mechanism. Maybe the tutorial should start by forcing players to (symbolically) queue themselves up for it first so that they know what the dang thing is!

I'm on Virtue and I've queued myself up for DFB many, many times and rarely have I had to wait more than a few minutes to get added to a team. It is far more efficient than trying to form a team before-hand (though the ability to queue up as a team is great). I was just sort of puzzled why people were spending so much time using the old /broadcast mechanism to do something that the LFG window does much more efficiently.

And I didn't want to engage in Yet Another "Use the LFG Window" exchange when there was every possibility they were forming for the old Sewer Network. At this point I think that 90% of all chat bandwidth in Atlas Park these days involves "sewer teams" and the means to form them.
  8. What does Super Tailor access cost, and is it account-wide?
  9. Well, I have used a premium account toon to add and promote other toons to a SG. I've even been able to promote the premium toon to Leader, so I imagine that if that toon was the SG leader to begin with, it would retain Leader status even if dropped to Premium status (assuming they have at least tier 2 rewards level access to SGs in the first place).
  10. I see a lot of people /broadcasting in Atlas Park that they are looking for a "sewer team". Are they talking about the old Sewer Network? Hasn't that been made largely obsolete by the new Death From Below underground sewer trial?

Well, only because they looked like a paired set, so I was looking for some kind of "border space" around them to drag. I was clearly thinking of UI conventions from other MMOs or something (keep in mind that I'm newly returned to CoX from many years off, playing other MMOs and such).

Well, you can hide them if you become a VIP.
How do you drag them? I have tried that and it didn't work. Do I click on the buttons themselves and drag? I tried clicking between them, above and around them, etc. to no avail.
  13. Is there an Option to hide, or a way to at least move, those big honkin' Paragon Rewards and Paragon Market buttons? They sit right in the space where all the buff icons accumulate and interfere with various other text that gets written there. And on smaller monitors it gets stuck right under the Nav window in the middle of the screen.

How do I hide or move those bloody buttons?

Well this is what combo systems generally are, aren't they? Pre-designed chains that produce different useful side effects. Console fighting games pioneered this idea, and I thought those were pretty non-open, at least in the sense that it's not like the player gets to create an arbitrary combo on-the-fly; players are bound by the combos as defined by the game designers. DB is no different in this regard, no?

A DB player might start Sweep, have a teammate melt most of the spawn partway through the combo, and then find his Sweep now hitting only a boss.
Combos are necessarily situational and you can't really count on any power always having optimal effect when taking into account the ever-shifting situation in team play. I've had plenty of cases where my targeted PBAoE debuff became instantly useless because our scrapper just crit'ed and killed the boss I put it on. If this is an indictment of the DB combo system, then it is an indictment of the CoX combat system as a whole, IMO.

And obviously it is incumbent upon the devs to make combos that are useful at all levels of play. If DB isn't, then it needs to be fixed in specifics; I don't necessarily agree that eliminating the dependency graph between combo effects is the right way to "fix" the deficiencies you mention.

Sure, SJ is definitely more "flexible," but it could also be argued that having only two types of components (builders and finishers) and a gross 0-3 buildup scale makes for such a loose interconnection between attacks that calling it a "combo system" at all is a bit of an exaggeration. It is not much different than tweaking Fury slightly so that certain attacks "use up" the Fury bar, while all the others "fill it up". By the simple standards of SJ, the Fury mechanism is also a "combo system", or at least only one small step away from one. Yet I doubt anyone would actually label it as such.

Nevertheless, I really like SJ. A lot. But I wouldn't call its combo system very interesting or sophisticated, merely flexible (to the point of blandness even).

I knew there was a reason to keep 800 spare PP in da bank...
  16. It certainly makes SJ an easier powerset to play, and I am definitely having fun with it. But I think it rather waters down the whole idea of "combos". In essence, there are only two components to SJ combos: builders and finishers, and the effects you get from finishers is unrelated to which builders were used. Very simplistic, almost to the point of not really being a "combo system" at all. DB, while frustrating to the casual player not accustomed to fighting games, is potentially deeper in terms of the tactics available to players who really master the powerset.

Having said all that, I am admittedly a very casual player who likes the simpler SJ approach over the more sophisticated DB scheme. But I don't fool myself into thinking everyone prefers "simple" like I do.

  19. So where can I find an official user manual for Base Construction? You know, something that explains the UI, explains the whole power/control scheme, how to make multiple-level rooms, adding/deleting rooms and the implications, etc.

For instance, I find that rotating the "scene" with the RBUTTON is barely adequate because the pivot for rotation is stuck on one corner of the base. Surely there is a way to adjust the rotation pivot point. And surely there are ways to move rooms around without having to empty them out, sell them, rebuy/place them, move items back into them, etc.

    Where is all this documented?
  20. I recommend giving him $5 so he can obtain the tier 2 reward token and unlock email, trading, /tell, and so on.

Seriously, a single $5 investment in the game shouldn't break the bank for anyone.

  23. Bunny must be crying and faceplanting a lot lately, Larker...
  24. Any time I click on the Inspiration storage in my base my CoX client freezes. Is this a known bug? Is there a workaround other than simply abandoning this feature (and all the inspirations previously stored in my base)?
  25. It seems to me that NCSoft must weigh the benefits of providing critical patches as soon as they can--especially during delicate periods surrounding huge game updates like Freedom/Convergence--against the possibility of losing players who are so annoyed by the downtime that they give up on the game for good. My guess is that from an overall numbers perspective, the benefits far outweigh the projected losses, and NCSoft will continue to perform necessary maintenance at appropriately critical junctures.

If a subscriber really truly is traumatized by all the downtime I'm sure they can write a complaint to NCSoft customer support and get a partial refund. However, I'm pretty sure that complaining about it here is pretty much next to useless, unless the goal is simply to rant for its own sake.
