Agent, I've PM'd you with a long list of feedback!
Good work so far. -
New Hero Factions are going to be difficult from the offset because they need to have a similar level of lore involved (in comparison with the existing factions) which I don't think can be adequately explained in a 5 mission arc.
There are some pointers however and 'spare' characters who could, conceivably, become Hero Factions. Tony Kord, a very brief contact in Atlas Park if you choose the Technology Origin, is one such character. There's even a badge relating to him (Upgraded). He's very much in the Iron Man mould.
Of course you could always use existing villains who are in the process of redemption - sure it'd be non-canon but it's as good a place to start because you don't have to go through the lengthy process of explaining their backstory: Countless Heroes have already gone up against them. It also has a Going Rogue theme attached to it.
I'm currently writing an arc featuring Frostfire. It's an Heroic one (where you help him become a member of Vanguard - I figure he's a little older than Fusionette, Faultline and Penelope Yin but would fall into the same category of up-and-coming Hero - but his Outcasts could conceivably (after all that drubbing from low-level Heroes!) become a Hero faction in their own right, under his leadership.
My 2.5 inf -
Hmm, there is plenty of room as I have used Customs very sparingly.
I have tried the boss myself and he's as difficult solo as any other Warrior boss - i.e. a large amount of lethal damage (he's a Slasher, as 'twere) with the right amount of resistance. He's still a Warrior with the usual attack pattern, so it's not like doing a whole arc with level 10 exemped Carnies or Malta.
Anyway, try the arc (!) and see what you think. -
I am very happy for you, Frija. Great talent has been recognised with this Dev's Choice.

Hello all!
I have just this moment published a 5 mission arc, entitled Simplicity.
It's a working title because, well, I was unsure what to call it. Simplicity was more a guideline for myself when I was writing the arc.
It needs feedback from players. It is specifically designed for solo play in mind. The arc range is level 1 - 14 and is Neutral morality, for reasons that will become apparent upon play.
I have tagged it as 'Easy' and 'Solo Friendly'. There are no EBs/AVs.
The final mission contains a Warrior Boss who belongs to the 20-29 range (they're not available from the 5-15 Warrior group for some reason) but there is an ally in the mission.
Due to the constraints of the MA in dealing with chained objectives (specifically clickies) the final mission contains clickies which become clickable after another objective has been completed. I'm not entirely happy with the way this works so would welcome any alternative workarounds or methods of achieving the same end.
Please do not hold back on the spelling, grammar, punctuation and presentation advice. I've scanned through the text a couple of times but I really need some fresh eyes to pick out the anomalies.
And finally, if this gets some good plays then I will write the 'second part'. There might even be a third part.
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=204500 was the starting inspiration for this arc. -
I'm with you on this one. Similarly I'd like to see a no gfx option for Forcefields too.

Would it be possible to get this thread moved to the Roleplaying section, please?
I finally found this, buried away! I vowed to return to the story and finish it before the year was up - I've got about three weeks to do so.
So, here goes!
***
Joseph had not slept. The worry of his wife and child, out there in the cold desert, was too great to allow sleep.
So, when he spied two figures returning over a dune his heart sang and he yawned. He ran towards the campfire and the approaching figures.
"Mary! Mary! You're back!"
The figures were too far away to respond. In fact, the figure clutching a child did not seem in a good disposition. Joseph realised he had not brought the lamp with him and rushed back to claim it. On his return, the figures had drawn closer and he could see his wife clutching their child. The girl followed behind, her head bowed.
"I am here to teach the savages the meaning of civility!"
It sounded, to Joseph at least, like Mary's mother but the words were issuing from his wife.
Some of the villagers had gathered and two girls, dressed in saris, gasped loudly and pointed to the incoming group. The girl following Mary looked up and she too gasped, drawing back further and pointing not at Mary but at the child.
"Bring me the leader of the village!" Mary, channeling her mother and possibly someone else, screamed.
The air was thick with an unknown quantity: The sari-dressed girls were acting like canaries in a coal mine, Joseph was hesitant to take another step towards his wife and child, and the village elder stepped out of a hut, his criss-cross smile replaced with a very deeply furrowed brow.
"So it has happened." He proclaimed. "And the child uses its own mother."
To the girls in saris this made perfect sense: the child was glowing an ominous blue colour and strands of this energy were feeding directly into Mary. They could see the child as it should be and the vision of the child as a young boy, a teenager, a young man, a man, a middle-aged man, and an old man all at once.
"It is a parasite and it is indeed a special kind of child." The village elder held out his arms as if to throw them around Mary and hug her. "But you must let it go." He strode towards her.
Blue light flashed, Mary ran towards the elder but not in some effort at kindness. Her eyes were mad and reddened, her let fist balled ready to strike and the child clung on for its life. Behind her, the young midwife swooped to the ground and dug in her hands. She muttered a strange phrase and the earth around Mary's feet became a mire, slowing the possessed woman's progress.
More blue light flashed, the elder defended himself against a strike, Mary beat down on him with the force of... it was only a human strength, she had little energy left after her ordeal. The child sensed it and realised quickly that it would have to change its host to make it out of here and away from the elders.
One of the girls, in fact the very girl who had lit Joseph's paraffin lamp, screamed. All around them blue energy swirled. Mary fell, the sand around her cushioning her fall, and the baby rolled soundlessly at the fire-lighter.
Time slowed. Joseph caught sight of the poor girl, unaware why she had suddenly come into possession of his child and he was frightened even more when she stopped screaming and turned her gaze to the unlit bonfire.
"Oh no!" was all he could manage as a blast of fire hit the kindling.
A few moments later and the girl was surrounded by a wall of flame. It was hungry and it sensed the wooden huts of the village.
Joseph crossed himself. He glanced at Mary who was collapsed on the floor then at the girl who was attempting to burn the village to the ground. He had to get his child back, at all costs.

Is there currently anything special for logging out in Terra Volta?
If not then I propose Nuclear Physicist: Def bonus
Not sure if it'd be sensible to have another Day Job Accolade as a result of that. -
Has anyone suggested a Global Channel 'TIP' for the loading screen yet? I thought that's what the Tip screens were for (and bad puns, naturally) ?

Quote:The list of Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune's moons alone should keep you in good stead there. If the list is that big, switch to NASA space missions. No one will notice. You know, I suppose that any arbitrary ordered list would work fine as the enumerating elements. I'm going to start using different things.
Also, I do know that Mercury) I'll definitely be pre-ordering it for Belle, Venus) I might pre-order it for myself depending on what the perks are, Earth) there were entirely too many numbered lists in that post, and Mars) I hope I never have an ordered list of more than eight items!
Back to the OP - hmmm, depending on finances I might pre-order or I might not. As it stands I cannot afford a new rig purely for the awesomeness that is 'Ultra' graphics mode.
Oh and didn't I hear mention that there would be NO WAR WALLS in Praetoria? If this is true then 'only 1 or 2 new zones is poor' depends entirely on how big those zones are... -
I'd also quite like to see:
- The commemoration of the vigil held for Maiden Justice
- Something to do with the wedding anniversary of Psyche and Manticore (a baby? Or is that too Funtastic [sic] 4?)
- A celebration of ScienceĀ - relating specifically to the first successful Portal experiment by Dr Brian Webb.
Wedding anniversaries are always fun... babies, jealous exes - that sort of thing.
I would like to suggest a few special instanced missions - maybe one with a parade float (stationary) and an attack by Freaks or similar.
I think there could be a lot of fun to be had with a small investment in writing a little bit of new content for CoX/V here and there. And the summer holidays would seem a good time to plan an event for. Admittedly, it would have to stand up to surviving over a longer period than, say, the Christmas event (roughly 3 weeks) but not every new event needs to have a new type of farmable currency attached to it. -

Paragon City News, 12:00
"The time is Twelve PM and our top story today is the disappearance of Congressman Alistair Wolfe the Second.
The attack occurred in the early hours of this morning in the vicinity of Bell Point Medical Centre, Independence Port. Eyewitness accounts, say the PPD, are sketchy at best. Some people claimed that there were lights in the sky, others that a little boy was responsible for the congressman's disappearance. One account even goes so far to suggest that the whole incident was masterminded by convicted felon Doctor Vazhilok, an account which has been vehemently rubbished by not only the Medical Centre board of directors but also Longbow and several other Hero organisations.
No one has claimed responsibility for the congressman's disappearance and PPD investigators are remaining tight-lipped about the whole affair. The FBI are rumoured to now be involved with the investigation and one website claims that Manticore has joined a team of Longbow operatives to track down the congressman and his captors.
We'll try and keep you up to date on this story but, for now, let's go to Steve for the weather..."
Internet message boards, forums, blogs, even some of the more respectable newspapers were running stories on the congressman. Whlst some touched briefly on snippets of truth - for instance rumours of his involvement with the Circle of Thorns - they were all couched in terms of conspiracy and wild drama.
The Knives had been successful. Longbow were, of course, trying to track the cell or cells involved in his kidnapping but were drawing large blanks.
The PPD were facing public criticism on their 'over-deployment' of officers - why had they sent in so many police officers to rescue one man? This only served to fuel the conspiracy rumours, of course.

Somewhere, Sometime
A figure, naked, was sat in a chair, its arms raised up above its head. Its legs were in chains. A tray of water and gruel sat on a small, wooden table to its left.
A door opened, light streamed in briefly. Long hair, military garb, face concealed by darkness - the new figure walked like a woman, smelled like a woman.
Silently the woman moved to a pulley at the back of the room.
A few turns here, a bloodcurdling scream followed.
This went on. And on. And on.
***
Lights flickered and danced. They watched as the body was carted away. Time passed. They heard a scream. They saw him, prone, in unbearable pain.
If lights could smile, they did.

This suggestion will start with a question!
Is there an ability to add a -mag resistance/protection to a power?
Let me clarify this question: We have the ability to lower defence, ToHit, certain types of damage output, overall damage, resistance, movement speed, recharge speed, repel enemies, cause enemies to fall down, cause enemies to fly up, and cause enemies to fall away from us. They are secondary effects in quite a number of powers and, in some cases, are the primary effects in other powers. We also have the ability to buff stats, and protect/resist against effects.
Therefore would it be possible to have attacks that, whilst not inducing holds, sleeps, fear, immobilise etc could reduce a mob's resistance to those effects?
If so, then I would like to propose the bare bones of a Bounty Hunter AT.
The Bounty Hunter has a choice of attack methods (their primary) and, like VEATs, can branch out. However, unlike VEATs I would suggest that weapons and weapon styles are unlocked as a character progresses and can be mixed and matched. The Bounty Hunter would have access to different styles of play via their choice of weaponry, armour and additional 'talents'. What they gain by coming close to being a Tank-Mage, they would suffer from redraw and longer animations.

Right, that turned out to be a fairly long list of powers! So let me explain the way that these branching powers work:
A Bounty hunter can choose 3/6 of the primary sets (as there are only 4 powers in each set). This means either Firearms or Crossbows or Combat Knife or Street Fighting and Bazookas or Staff. So you could pick to be a mix of range/melee or just range or just melee.
Now the people paying attention will notice that even with the choice of sets, that only brings the Primaries to 8 powers when there are 9 available to regular powersets. That's because I am suggesting a Global (to Bounty Hunters) Primary power - some kind of build-up which does the usual +Damage but instead of +ToHit, I'd like to see it increase damage vs Undead (There are no vs Undead powers anywhere else). Now I don't know if that's even possible. I'm just trying to be creative here.
The Secondary choices are a little simpler. Choose 2/3 again but Armours is the only thing I could come up with as the 'final' part of the Bounty Hunter set.
I did dream up a brief yet unsatisfying (to me) series of powers in the secondary that have the ability to add extra damage to an attack (like a surefire proc in an IO set BUT with a VERY long recharge. So like a power boost but adding, say, cold damage to attacks for 10 seconds instead of boosting secondary effects, kind of thing).
I've also tried to keep the sets 'generic' enough for concept purposes although calling one set Charms might need a rethink. Perhaps simply calling it Powers or Talents could work?
Anyway, as I stated at the top of the post, this is a bare bones idea with scant regard for coding, actual numbers or (as a result of those two) balance!
Just pushing this out there to see what (if anything) comes from it. -
Quote:And to add to that, SS - Should be taught in schools full stop! - That is to say grammar/punctuation and not just how to make humourously-titled books.Should be required reading in every school from the age of 10
By the way has anyone else noticed themselves typing really carefully in this thread? Has anyone else subjected their posting to the level of scrutiny normally reserved by little children armed with a magnifying glass, hovering dangerously close to an anthill?
And on a separate note, I'm glad to see this thread hasn't been blocked. I tried to start a similar thread to this one a few years ago when we were a divided message board peoples. It was erased by a Moderator on the grounds that 'This kind of thing can lead to trouble.' -
((Phew, what a festive season! Right, some last posting from me! Thank you to all who have contributed to this story. Yes, Widow Frost will be back (she's a darned comic book-style character ain't she?!!) although not necessarily in any timeline/Universe/continuum that this thread inhabits! And thanks to a PM from Rotten_Luck, some other characters might also be making further appearances as time goes on... You have been warned.))
The Kheldians scattered like ducks during the hunting season. On the ground the PPD readied themselves for the forcible ejection of the congressman.
A slight wobble from one of the SWAT vans hailed the arrival of Alistair Wolfe, followed momentarily by said SWAT van doors opening and an armoured officer stepping out.
"Wolf's in the den, sir."
The police commander sighed, partly out of relief.
"So why'd they let him out?"
The SWAT officer shrugged.
"Something about him didn't agree with 'em, apparently."
"Go figure."
The SWAT van was secured, the convoy of cycles and cars escorted it back towards Brickstown. Up above the clouds the Kheldian PPD remained, keeping watch so that a repeat of the event that started all of this - the ambush by the Circle of Thorns - would meet with some old fashioned heroic resistance.
A few officers remained behind to take names for the sake of paperwork. They headed towards the hospital, not aware that Balgair and her men were still inside.
***
"It seems to have calmed down," Matron Knowles turned from the glass doors and looked at her colleague, Doctor Carson, firmly in the face, "The police are approaching. They'll want to question all of us."
Doctor Carson tutted.
"Under the circumstances, I think that perhaps you and your men should make a hasty retreat to my office. It's on the third floor." He addressed Balgair and nodded to the Matron, who collected her thoughts and waited to escort the mercs up in the lift.

Somewhere in the ether, between planes of existence, lights flickered. They might have been inhabiting Limbo or any other number of grey states but they were still moving, searching for a way back in.
The lights could see their former host - lying on the tarmac, so vulnerable - but they had no catalyst with which to exert their own force.
Instead they waited for an opportunity to move closer or to find another person who fitted their requirements. But, for now, they were content on gazing in their eyeless way at the girl who had become their way of escaping into the real World.
Something would happen. Maybe not soon, but it would happen.

Oh there are plenty of them that were left out.
Could have is the correct usage instead of could of. That's a bit more of a personal gripe
I just thought it was a neat reference guide for those who are unsure.
Should this have gone into the Player Guides, d'you think? -
A friend posted a useful link on Facebook to this website, which explains the use of English language so much betterer than could I (

Quote:You got some figures there to base your cost argument on? I could pull figures out of my bottom to match up with your sweeping generalisation of the 'players' of the game.
You have to specify failure from a perspective.
From a cost/benefit analysis and point of view, AE was a failure. Ourboros did take 100% of an issue, and even delay it. SG bases came along with City of Villains, and they did not cost as much as AE did.
AE took up an entire Issue. AE delayed an Issue. AE gave birth to Issue 15, which was a very controversial Issue. Then we got the "AE Crisis" once it was released. And then it was obliterated by almost completely making its rewards worthless to many players (when compared to risks involved), and now it's one of the unpopular features of the game, to say the least.
Did Ouroboros cause that much mess? Did SG bases cause that much mess? No.
So no. The success of a feature is not a popularity contest, unless you consider it from a business stand point, and consider the costs.
I apologize if I did not make my perspective clear in my earlier post.
AE is fun. When the farms were prevalent (i.e. 2 minutes after i14 launched, disregarding beta) I didn't find it fun. I'd still like it if someone who can would clear up the defunct arcs (i.e. blatant exploits).
I do now however, despite the nerf to custom xp.
Recently, Dr Aeon ran a competition. To me that was the essence of the AE - writers coming up with arcs based around a theme and/or set of guidelines to see where people could go with content. It's how I imagined it could be fun.
I'm also wary of people who use arguments which boil down to: You're entitled to your opinion but you're in a minority, clearly, so I have free reign to deride everything you say.
People who use the AE and people who create for the AE are a minority, RPers are a minority, Farmers are a minority, PvPers are a minority, Badge Hunters are a minority, People who organise TFs are a minority - the list goes on.
There is not, in my experience, anything like a 'Regular' gamer and the term 'Regular' is pretty general anyway, without any description of what it is constituted from. Actually there is - 'Regular' gamers are those decent, salt-of-the-Earth, regular joes who are the target of lowest common denominator marketing and advertising executives across the World. In essence, they're as 'real' as the Nuclear Family and Traditional Values.
So to answer the original question: I use the AE and will continue to use it until the servers are shut down in the very distant future, thankyouverymuch. -
Artemis. Presumably the Knives of Artemis. If they were involved then, whoa, things were looking even more dire for Congressman Wolfe than being stuck inside an alien craft which was experiencing something akin to gastro enteritis.
And how come this little kid, insane and dangerous as he was, had a sister who was involved with one of the most dangerous and... ah, this was Paragon City: More coincidences per square mile than a Charles Dickens novel.
"Look, Mr Zero, heh-- I've tried being reasonable and I've tried to convince you that I'm not some regular schmuck but if these Knives of Artemis are involved, I... I need your protection. Have you heard of them? They're not too keen on the male of the species - I'm assuming you're male of course, I know I definitely am--" he glanced briefly at the slime covering his body. Despite the intense heat it was holding up.
"The PPD are involved. I need asylum. I know I've made some bad choices in the past, but I'm willing to start afresh, wipe the slate clean, scratch your back..."
Wolfe looked miserable, upset and beaten. He'd been humiliated in several ways since that first attack by the 'Thorns. He was powerless, at the complete mercy of his captors and so very tired. Whatever had saved him from a lifetime of paralysis was now wearing off and the twinges in his spine heralded their return.
The kid was a worry. He was a complete unknown entity. Even with Acid Zero's strange alien craft, the congressman had heard the story about how the reptilian had murdered the secretary of defence in cold blood. That was measurable.

Try and make contact with the pilot
We're trying
Well try harder Ghourdo
The thing about Kheldians was that they weren't all the same. Or to put it another way, despite being constructed of light or dark energy they all had different hosts which to a greater or lesser extent informed their knowledge and abilities.
The Kheldians who chose to serve in the PPD were trained, where possible, in a number of ways. Not all of them were capable of communicating effectively with other alien lifeforms, however. The ones that were, were doing their best to breach any communication blocks posed by the ship they had approached. The others, feeling a little redundant, were getting annoyed.
Ah, I think I've made contact! Hello? This is Officer Harkovian of the PPD. We understand that within your ship there is a gentleman by the name of Congressman Alistair Wolfe. We wish to escort him back down to terra firma.
The Kheldians waited.

Just to check, is the OP also here to try and undermine CoX at all?
*puts on tinfoil hat*
It's just that, well, putting a rant in the Suggestions thread that says, in some ways, that Devs do not listen (when they do) and that a person has been ripped off (when they haven't) by NCSoft, then comparing prices (which are wrong) with products in competition to CoX (in terms of being other MMOs) seems a little fishy.
And to put my points forward regarding the (eventual) points raised:
1) Badge achievement levels on some badges were silly, especially on badges that provided no other benefit than having an extra badge. I think I received one to two extra badges after the changes - one of them was the silly Emanator badge. Yes it also gives out a Gladiator but it's not like it's a Damage Taken Badge which leads to an accolade. Another one was, on my squishy toons, the Sleepy/Restrained-style badges. Again these provided no extra benefit to my characters.
2) We have Colour Customization for most powers. Not all. MM pets would be lovely. Personally I'd rather see more MM pet sets. And my Earth Controller's Animated Stone looks lovely in his three incarnations: molten magma, crystal and different colour from the original one.
Also, that other MMO that features crappy versions of Golden Age-style heroes has got a lot of catching up to do before it even begins to compete with CoX. Not the other way round. I found it amusing that all CoX had to do was add a couple of QoL updates and colour customization and suddenly people weren't too worried about the competition anymore.
3) I've never PvP'd - actually that's a lie, I have. But I didn't enjoy it. That said, I thought the point of dual builds was that you could have one set of PvE and one set of PvP enhancements if you wanted. Sure, it's expensive, but there are so many ways to earn inf and gain benefits from other 'currency' that it's less of a worry.
When CoV launched, there were some moderator-run events to encourage people into the zones. I'd vote for more of these to encourage PvPers and non-PvPers to have fun, perhaps even have an increased benefit for PvP weekend. I've been tempted to PvP in the past but found that those I PvPd with were more intent on ganking a single enemy than having a good battle with some witty repartee thrown in.
4) There is no problem with the charging system for the games, as far as I can tell. I was a bit miffed when it was no longer possible to use Maestro cards to pay for rolling subs and had to use my cobwebbed credit card. Apart from that, the value is good. -
I like this idea.
Mini TFs/Safeguard-esque missions also get the thumbs up.
May I add something? I'd quite like to see some of the contacts blueside paired down (so instead of a potential 2/3 contacts who give out exactly the same missions, reduce the number to those similar in the Rogue Isles).
Tony Kord, for instance, isn't a character that is returned to later (whereas Steve Sheridan is as is Justin Greene and others) through other missions.
Hmm, had some more thoughts about certain contacts. Think I will collate them and post separately about those! -
Quote:*wakes up*Oh yeah, it's a rant. Is it a solid rant? I believe so. But hey, let's all make sure that we point out the "rebels" flaws and make sure we bury our heads in the sand so no one can get in trouble. I mean after all we don't want to rock the boat, after all, we might even get kicked! **shudder** So Skat's I'm with you on this one. Wrong place to post yeah, right words to say. Maybe putting this in the wrong spot will wake up folks. Or in this case, make other's go "WITCHHUNT!" and point out the flaws in the placement of it.
*reads*
Nope. Still in the wrong place. It's also badly structured and is difficult to read so, if the OP wanted this to be seen, there are better ways of formatting the text (paragraphs, coherent sentences etc).
Starting to label people as 'rebels' and others as 'not wanting to rock the boat'... this is an Internet Forum, not the film 'Footloose'. Although, admittedly, that did make me chuckle when I thought of 'Footloose'.
Part of the rant is focused towards PvP. Part of it towards.. gameplay? Difficult to tell. There are far better ways to structure arguments than either the OP has done or you have. -
Which enemies are you (the OP) finding harder to defeat?
Your damage versus some high level enemies will be higher than others as you know. Some of the newer high level enemies (Cimeroran Traitors and Vanguard) seem to do insane damage versus everything.
If it were me, I'd be playing the +1/+2 levels as opposed to 'equivalent to 2/3/4 etc heroes'.
I know, solo, that I can take on +levels as that's how it worked before the recent changes to the difficulty setting system.
