Yes. But as soon as I invite someone else to the team, any subsequent spawns can contain bosses again. Which is why I WOULD pre-map, except for the spreading issue. :/
  3. Fire/Kins are finding it slower to demolish maps now because of the "newish" mob-wander phenomenon. When the spawns spread out we get lower FS and our AoEs have a harder time hitting everyone. Additionally, Imps seem to love the outlying Lts a bit overmuch making them vulnerable on the periphery. The new difficulty system is now also adding bosses that we used to be able to avoid by padding to 6 on Invincible. Bosses=Slower. Mapping the instance is also rendered all but useless by the aforementioned spawn-spread. As soon as you come near enough to a spawn point the mob spawns (purpose of mapping) but now as soon as they're spawned they start spreading out, making it a real pain.

  5. I like the VEATS, find the HEATS to be not worth the bother, but whether or not they are "all that" am pissed that any n00b on a steamrolling team can have one in a day. I don't think that having to wait until 50 was unreasonable, just that most people misunderstand what HEATS/VEATS are all about. They're not meant to be "godmode" but that is why people are disappointed in them. IMO they are/were (whichever) meant to give the veteran player an opportunity to play an AT that would be flexible, allowing them to explore several different ability types and playstyles all in one character, letting them either concentrate on one or diversifying and trying to be more of a JOAT. Of course, one thing that many people tend to forget is the MON that accompanies that.

Incarnate is (will be) our new "Epic".

On that, you are SO wrong.
  7. Okay, so we have murder, kidnapping, extortion, rampant drug use, demon worship, poison, etc. and those are fine and dandy. As are Dominatrices and her slave-bois. But Mac Daddy and his bimbos are offensive. People really need some perspective.
  8. I think its probably WAI but I do believe that some of the scaled down bosses need a bit of balancing. Some of them seem to be every bit as dangerous as their regular boss status would dictate with the exception of fewer hit points. Has anyone done a breakdown on down-scaled bosses? I'd be interested in seeing how many powers they still have. For example: Carnie spawns of 1 Dark Ringmistress/1 Master Illusionist sure seem deadly for being 2 Lieutenants.

Enhancements: Most Tankers in their teens are likely using DOs and probably can't afford too many of those without a sugar daddy or market pvp. These don't give much in the way of effective bonuses, so the character may be pretty weak.

Defensive Primaries: Levelling a defense-focused Tanker early on is just a nightmare, because you can't get enough defense for it to be useful. Everything hits quite often and hits for full squishy-equivalent damage. Cascading defense failure is also a problem. It's just an ugly ride at the start.

Resistance Primaries: Even with resistance-based primaries, you can run into a situation where you've got maybe 20% resistance to a damage type at that level (possibly even none). That means 80% of incoming damage gets through and Gauntlet keeps drawing aggro. You've got more hp than anyone else, sure, but you're going to go through it fast under those conditions.

Endurance: Pre-Stamina, tanking is often more about endurance than damage. It's really easy to floor your blue bar without quality enhancements and recovery boosts.
Assuming that maybe the player was some of the issue, you might want to think about...
Once Bitten, Twice Shy: If you've ever gone on a faceplant cycle with an early-level tank, you don't want to do it again. Especially if you're used to seeing fully-developed Tankers laughing in the face of, well, everything. You may delete the toon outright. You may hang back and let others do the dirty work. Either way, it may take a bit for them to get on track.

Told Not to Tank: Ever been on one of those bossy teams? None of us would ever be that bossy, I'm sure. Still, they're out there. Could be another Tanker told them to hang back because they died too often. Could be a Controller who wanted to show them how unnecessary Tankers were. Could be a squishy who liked to throw AOE damage early and demanded protection. Could be lots of things, but they might've been brought up in less than ideal circumstances.

Never Learned: New Tanker, new to tanking. Whether you're new to the game or just used to someone else taking the alpha (assuming a willing sacrifice exists), they just might not have the hang of it yet.
This as well. Bear in mind, also, that we are learning a whole new dynamic with regards to how ATs work together on a team. Yes, we've had co-op TFs for a while now and a co-op zone, but there are a LOT of people who have VERY limited experience playing with several combinations. Hell, we BARELY agree on team roles amongst blue-side ATs, let alone, now throwing Brutes, MMs, etc. into the mix.

I believe and hope that it will get better but I fear that too many of us already "KNOW how to play" and will thus be terribly resistant to learning anything new.

  12. I've had them not show up at all, sending an email instead. I even filled out the "update/extra information" section of their email "form" and sent it back. They replied with a customer service satisfaction survey... Yes, I used Petition, not Bug.
  13. I used to make homage characters all the time, but they are all gone. Except...

I just watched "Tombstone" the other day and Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday was just wonderful. I had felt no compulsion to make a DP toon of any kind until then. I'm just "sorry" I had to give him a secondary from what's available.

How about you spend a couple seconds trying to figure out someone's intentions before biting their head off next time?

For all I knew you had never fired off Ripper in a crowd and didn't realize it hit more than one target. You'd be surprised what some longtime players don't know, I learn new stuff all the time. And I don't get insulting when people try to help me with something they didn't realize I already knew.
Perhaps you're right. Maybe my response was built in based on my perception of your know-it-all/done-it-all/above-it-all attitude. My response might have been as simple as "Please read the post" but having thought about it I admit that I could have been more clear as to what I meant by "convincing myself". I was addressing a concern of a player who seems to have "issues" with the way the set plays. I have issues as well. I KNOW that Ripper/Headsplitter/Eviscerate/Golden Dragonfly are CAPABLE of multiple hits, making it by definition an AoE. My inability to reliably COUNT on it for AoE goodness does, however, limit that goodness in my mind. To hell with the numbers, if you can't FEEL it, you're not going to be happy with it.

    Anyway, my apologies.

Hitting more than one target makes things AoEs by definition, so Ripper is an AoE by those standards. It also takes PBAoE damage sets. Technically, Head Splitter and Golden Dragonfly are AoEs as well, but they are a lot harder to hit more than one target with because their cone is so narrow.
THANK you for explaining basic cone mechanics to me. <sarcasm off> I SAID it was a matter of me convincing MYSELF. If I don't do it right, it doesn't FEEL like AoE. MY problem. MAYBE an issue for others. Not everyone is a CoH god like you.

I've never been able to "convince" myself that Ripper was an AoE. As far as I can tell, Quills and the wide arc of Throw Spines are the only things that make it all that AoE-ie.

    Is it confirmed?

Sad thing is: I didn't even notice it was necro until I saw Statesman post.
  20. I was in a similar situation on my first time through.

Wanted to go Loyalist/Responsibility all the way through but Cleo (yes, AND Michael) were just too cool for me to kill her. Figured that I could get away with offing Washington and continue going Loyalist. Problem is that this one decision locked me in to Resistance all the way past 20. Now, part of it may be that I was running with a SG mate who was doing mostly Resistance missions, I don't know. Wish I did know the all of the branching and how it actually effects alignment.

I don't tweak. If you call me "uber," I'm going to assume you're either joking or crazy. I love doms, and have exactly zero permadoms. The only things at any sort of cap are my fire tanks fire resistance, and you have to almost work at NOT doing that. I'm a lore hound (see also "Kheldian backstory guide.")

So if your point is that the people who are saying "it's fine" are only the "elite min/max type trying to impress you/stroke their ego," well... you're wrong. There are one or two things that could be tweaked, yes, and I've mentioned them before, but overall, yes, I *do* feel the difficulty level is perfectly fine. Hell, I think having Mu killing your recovery is a bigger issue redside (pre-stamina) than anything in GR.

No Bill, I'm pretty sure (completely) that I wasn't talking about you specifically, in this case or really any other that I can recall off the top of my head. And this thread is by NO means the only one to which the "issue" applies.

There was another poster who expressed concern that the game was balanced around the uber-1337 that I mentioned. This was just my take on that question.
  22. Praetoria seems to me like it started out in-between on the nerf-nerf coaster. Most character powers have been "normalized" but some enemies have yet to be "softened". Not saying that this is right or wrong (I do have my opinions). I think that this is a cycle that we're stuck with without a difficulty adjustment system and/or as long as people don't understand it or refuse to use it realistically.

There are always going to be people who want a relaxed trip though the story arcs and others that tell them to read a book. Casual play should be just as rewarding as hard-core and vice-versa. Not everyone needs to shout for joy on an airplane to be having fun, but I guess some do.

I'll say that I agree that SOME ultra-1337 players influence the decision-making process in terms of game difficulty a tad much. Or at least it SEEMS that they do. They certainly are a vocal and "respected" segment of the community. To many of them, if something isn't hard enough that bragging about how easy it is (to them) can't impress us then it it is too easy, in general. So that's how they'll impress us: to tell us all that it is too easy and dismiss it as being some kind of joke. These players who have tweaked their builds/skills/tactics/exploits(?) to the utmost really are a "cut above" the average player or even the average group. But the Rikti Pylon Challenge, Rikti Boss Challenge, speed master runs, speed challenge TF standings, "closed" Hami runs to name a few are all born of an elitist mentality where the only fun necessary is that it stoke the e-ego. If a player engages in these activities out of preference they're not likely to give a damm(sic) about the average player's enjoyment. Their right to an opinion? ABSOLUTELY! Is their opinion RELEVANT to the question?

Basically, its on the wheel, and for better or worse, as long as the outlying players demand that their desires are all that matter (which is true, but only from a self-centered viewpoint) it will always be a pushmi- pullyu contest.

Dev's Choice is a joke as it stands.
There is no way in hell that a Dev will ever look at 99% of MA arcs. They can't. There are too damn many.
