Quote:I am sorry but the forumites could never accept bad news of any kind. I post a chart of the games revenue back in June and had people say "Declining sales so what"If they stopped development or new items added to market, or we had some months without new issues or news about it, servers merged at some point...
We could see the closure coming...
But a serious company doesnt announce the shut down of a MMO 10 days after releasing its latest powerset.
Nature affinity was added to the store on August 21...
We had I24, Superpacks #2 (this alone would made a lot of money), tons of new powersets on the way, and costume sets too.
Dont come and tell us u saw it coming, Brillig... Not even the devs saw it.
Im not buying that, same way Im not even close to buy that NCSoft "exahusted all options"... UBER BS.
The so what was you can't expect a company to ramp up investment in a project and not get a return.
What is amazing is NCsoft's behavior. People posting on the internet are one thing a company that has millions sunk in a property is another. They had years to step in and fix things, instead they let their property decay. Then when things got too bad for them instead of renovating they paved over. -
Quote:No a thousand times no. The game had gross sales of 2.5 million per quarter. That is before expenses. So if their monthly expenses were ZERO, they made 800,000 a month. The game was making $800,000 profit per month (have seen it quoted both here and on Titan Network forums).
We have no idea what their expenses for the studio, for the GMs, for payment processing, for anything else was.
What is more important we have no idea what the character of the sales were or where they were going. Want to bet we hadn't fallen off that 2.5 million/quarter cliff ? -
Quote:CoH, it's developers and ardent fans live in a different universe than the one everyone else lives in. Just recollect, that whenever debate on these forums gyrated to how the game was doing, there would always be a contingent that would come out and shout like a pack of trained howler monkeys "ITS DOING WONDERFUL FOR A GAME ITS AGE"There are a lot of problems with that statement.
In no particular order:
2. He keeps going on and on that CoH was profitable. I've yet to see any proof of that, but even conceding the point, there's no way that CoH was significantly profitable. The idea that CoH was a part of what made Aion and GW2 possible is pretty ludicrous. Saying that GW2 was made possible by CoH profits is a joke. If CoH never existed, GW2 would still have been made. On the face of the numbers, it appears that the profit from CoH was what was sustaining new products development at Paragon. New products development at Paragon didn't actually produce any new products.
You know what ? It's still doing great for a game its age and on Dec. 1 it still will be, because 90% of everything out back then has been shut down. By any objective measure we were doing really poorly -
OMG
891.8 is the classification for War and Peace not archetypes and powers. -
We were getting improvement in i24 what would you have done.
Here's why I never cared for the changes that were slated.
There were only 2 changes that were actually focused on blasters in the issue that will never come, the extended range power for snipes and the sustains.
The sustains were weak, it was the equivalent of giving blasters about as weak a heal as you could in a game where healing has to be mammoth to have a serious impact. Defense and Resistance are on hyperbolic curves for mitigation. The fact that blasters had the worst base numbers, for defense and resistance and the fewest option for gaining more was the reason they had problems. This is where the problem should have been addressed.
The snipe extended range , fast cast change was WUT ?? Why not just rename blasters snipers while you are at it.
Fixes
General
1. Improve the blaster numbers for the pool/epic powers to at least corruptor levels if not defender levels.
Epic powersets
1. Make the armors all available as tier 1 choices
2. Include some sort of self heal/hibernate power in each set or long duration break free type of power.
Secondaries
1. Standardize the status effects. Change fears to stuns or holds
2. Case by case basis ex electric add some more =recover etc etc
Primaries.
1. Case by case ex, ar change ignite to targeted aoe and bring it in line with other t3s for cast time. -

The forums always overestimated just how good the good parts of this game are and always overlooked just how bad the flaws were. There was a thread about suggestions that made it into the game. Go through that and ask just how many you liked. Just look around and think how well forumites react to being told they are wrong.Quote:Every game has flaws. Point made -
Office 2003 here. The point was, that the trend in development is to deprive the buyer of rights to the product. If you want an entertainment example there's a couple cases of people finding out they can't leave their iTunes libraries to their heirs.

Quote:You are aware that microsoft is trying to move to a subscription plan for office. If you can accept that someone else can take away a game you bought and in the case of RPGs, MMO or otherwise, your characters, then good for you. The problem now extends to always online required games, even ones with decent solo modes, can also go dark once their publishers decide to shut down the servers. Unless the patch the game before they throw the switch of course.
We are becoming more renters than owners and we just aren't noticing it. -
You win the game Hamster.

Really. I've known people that could play chess on a shop floor or read a book on a construction site with the jackhammers going. Here people fly apart, if they see something they disagree with.

Quote:At a guess give it a year and they will be shutting down Guild Wars 1, and offering a small credit towards buying Guild wars 2 if you bought in the last 3 months. Then depending on how the buzz is over GW3 and the costs for developing it they will decide if its worth running gw2 for the one time purchase, or if they make changes that force you to use microtransactions. And here's what we'll hear in 3 months..
We wanted to let you know that your voices have been heard and your concerns have been taken into serious consideration. We appreciate the overwhelmingly constructive and positive messages in the emails, notes, and packages you've sent in support of the game. It has not been an easy decision for us to close Game Production Studio and prepare to shut down Aion. We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the Aion intellectual property, but in the end, efforts to do so were not successful. Aion has a special place in all of our hearts, and we want to ensure its reputation and the memories we share for the game end on a high note.
Once again, we will be holding events throughout the process of preparing for the game's end, and we encourage players and fans of the franchise to join forces and enjoy their time in a game that we've enjoyed supporting for more than eight years.

and then next year....

Quote:The point isn't about winning, we can't. It's been about enjoying the fight. It's about getting in those few good shots. This is true. No matter how much we win (if at all), NCSoft has to win bigger or else there's no point in them doing anything at all.
And in doing nothing at all? They still win.
Over the years I saw and complained about decisions by the devs I thought were hurting the game. Doing so on the forums was always what I knew to be a losing game. Never stopped me, and every so often it seemed a few people were actually thinking about what was being said, instead of just trying to get the last word, stifle debate, or seem wise by telling people what they wanted to hear. It's also funny just how many people who put their hands over their ears and shouted people down remain, and still doing just that. -
Quote:Ncsoft have refunded me $212 for paragon points purchased since the start of July, goes a little way in recompense but still feel they should have gone about the announcement better than they had. allowing people to purchase paragon points when it was more than likely already in the pipeline long before the it was announced that the game was going to close.
personally I think they should refund all people paragon points spent since may but that's my opinion
Did they say this to you ? I bought 50 dollars worth of points in the first week of August and have seen no sign of refund. They did refund the remaining time on mine and my wife's subscriptions. -
They won.
There never was any other possible outcome. They held all the cards, owned the table and were paying the dealer. It's still good to fight the fight. Doing so is more about who you are, than winning or losing. Are you someone who lets themselves be hit or do you stand up for yourself ? Our community stood up and threw everything we had at them. It wasn't enough and it could never be enough but still we tried. All in all, not a bad way to go out. -
Croatoa
Only spot in the game that actually might be in Rhode Island. -
Quote:Didn't Microprose make stand alone/networked versions of that game back in the day ?At least you're not playing Magic Online. The day it becomes unprofitable, poof! All your cards vanish. Millions of high-pitched screams will ring out from basements across the world that day.

Quote:As far as we know they didn't even solicit offers.Right. I truly hope that the other sides of such negotiations are free to speak about it as well. If they've truly exhausted such efforts, there should be more than a few sources to account for their end of it.

Quote:Ozone ? The Van Allen Belt is calling, it want's to know where we would like all the charged particles sent. Going to have one heck of an aurora that day.Obviously there's a current threshold. Below X is okay, above X is inhibited. Of course that would also shutdown ozone production since lightning would be inhibited, unless it's more of a notch filter that a low pass one.
The writers of this were just being horribly lazy. The are other ways to have a technological decapitation. Nuclear war comes to mind as both reasonable and infinitely interesting. Leigh Brackett tackled the theme beautifully in "The Long Tomorrow". You had a society that just banned technology out because they blamed it for the nuclear war. They destroyed any tech and it's users when they found them. -
Not every spawn would need it. Just every so often and maybe toss in bonuses of some sort for the spawns that are harder.
-
If you fail to stop everyone, you have let someone escape, if you let someone escape you lose the astral. Is that so hard to understand ?
Prior to the announcement and even after while Itrials were still happening, not getting the bonus was a 1 in 6 to 1 in 8 event.
I can't recall a single time where a league has let just 1 prisoner get past.
