i do like the idea of going with agility in the alpha. changing the slotting that much ends up costing a good bit of end recovery and a good bit of total hp. may reslot death shroud, adding slots to obsidian shield doesnt yield as much you would think.
-
well, to be a little more helpful, and a little less snarky, this is a bit of a mess. It is silly expensive, and well, yeah.
I looked at the other thread you posted, and you mention sacrificing potential for defense. I think you missed the point of why people softcap resist based tanks. The point of it is to increase your potential, i.e, it makes you a LOT harder to kill. The point of a tank is to not die. Hence if you layer defense with resist, you increase your chances of living, which is why stone armor and invuln are really hard to kill right out of the box. Damage is secondary, and that seems to be what you are building for. If you want to be a meatshield, you softcap defense, and maximize resistance. That way when you do get hit, you don't get hit as hard. If you ignore defense you ALWAYS get hit. You take way more damage, you eat pavement faster than the guy that is def softcapped. Your resistance keeps you up when you do get hit, unlike pure defense sets, which can get cornholed if their defense is bypassed.
If you don't want to stack defense, that is your choice. But don't mistake a personal preference with maximizing potential.
As for the build, you are so end heavy you won't be able to do anything. CoF is kind of crappy. Some people like it, I don't. It's a low mag fear and I am not worried about the trash it does hold. I don't necessarily disagree with taking maneuvers, but tactics is an endwhore. Yeah, I don't really see where you are really going with this build. If you want to maximize survivability, you should really just go all in a with a softcapped build, or figure out something else, like a full on tanktroller style build. This is kind of a mess, not terrible terrible, i mean, if it fits your playstyle, yeah, rock on, otherwise, I would start from scratch. -
Hey Justaris, Dech's DA thread you have linked is less than 6 months older than Jebe's guide, which is still like 95% up to date considering that haven't really changed crap since he wrote it, as far as DA is concerned. I am actually disappointed that he seems to have quit right around the same time people started paying attention to Dechs, which ironically is around the same time I started one of my sabbaticals from the game.
As far as going for positional defense on a DA tank, go for it, I did it on my DA/DM tank, and it was well worth it. The gladiators 3% is not as hard to get as people make it out to be, I farmed a bunch of hero merits til I got mine. Took some time, but was worth it. -
i am giving serious thought to really kitting out my elec/psi, with proper slotting, even before incarnate shifts, i can see it being a real monster.
Right now at +1/x8 I can mow through almost completely unscathed, and I am still lacking in a fully IOed build.
just not sure if i want to keep ice for my epic or switch to GW. -
weird, knew i pasted it, ah well

Back again after another hiatus, dusting off the Claws/DA brute. I see there are now ATOs, and am just in time for the new upcoming Incarnate slot.
Was mucking around in Mid's, this is what I ended up with. This isn't a huge departure from the build I have now, I think it has a bit more damage, and a wee bit more defense.
And please, no commenting on expense or any of that, I already have 4 of the 6 ATOs and 3 of em are purple, I already have everything else in the build IOwise, and the Incarnate slots are what I have slotted currently.
Really I am just looking for another pair of eyes to look for any glaring holes. And no, I did not forget OG or CoF, I hate both of them. -
Kathari is a troll, or needs educating.
Plain and simple, /da is a strong set when setup correctly. I don't bother with the fears usually, I have softcapped s/l defense, and I CoF does not inhibit fury. My Claws/DA is a beast, and I still haven't come close to maximizing it's build. I would go for softcapped positional defense, but I already did that on my DA tank a few years ago. -
The fact that I was able to softcap my DA/DM tank positionally, without completely neutering him, is a testament to what you can do with the DA.
No end problems, and can double as a tanktroller in large spawns, whats not to love.
Still building my Claws/DA brute. The pure fun of this toon is incredible. I did somewhat dismantle the tank, at least short term, as a few IOs are stupid expensive and I don't feel like saving up for a month for another Glad 3%..... -
Raising this thread from near deth.
Came back a couple weeks ago, but for some reason I was locked out of the forums. First priority when I came back was finishing my Claw/DA broot. Took the DA/DM tank as far as I really wanted to go, I could start building incarnate stuff on him, may still, not sure. Either way, I got him positionally soft-capped. He can hold aggro like nuts, but his damage output is bleh. Soooooo, I took a couple of his more expensive goodies, like the GA+3% and a couple other high dollar items, and put em on the broot.
Here is where I am going in the short term, I wanna kill, not tank, so if all i need is a couple purps and oranges now and then, I am happy. Yeah, he eats blues, but not as bad as you think. Am probably going to yank that 3% back off him and give it back to the tank. I plan on moving up to Purples in the appropriate powers as I can afford to.
Also, not sure what I should slot for Alpha. My end isn't the best, but that will get better as I fill in my sets, only have about half atm.
Anywho, here is the build I am looking at, minus Incarnate and Acc's. Should be pretty obvious what I will be substituting til I get the purples.

Quote:Is it end heavy, yes. Is it unmanageably end heavy, nope. And really, if I turn off CoF and FA, my end use vs. recovery is rather good. 1.92 out compared to 3.66 in is pretty efficient.Your build has very high endurance consumption from the toggles. You don't have any endurance reductions in most of your resistance/defense toggles, and Murky Cloud is poorly slotted. Also, that Gladiator's 3% defense IO will cost you over 2 billion INF alone, unless you farm hero merits for it.
I find it much cheaper and more reasonable to aim for 32.5% defense when going for vectored soft caps. A small purple inspiration will soft cap you for fights that you need to be soft capped.
Maybe you can improve your build by looking at mine. This is for I19. Those extra slots in the current inherent powers are for stamina and health, so the current endurance recovery is much lower than it will be when I19 comes.
Murky cloud isn't poorly slotted, it is slotted the way I want to slot it. I sacrificed some damage resistance for defense. More accurately, i sacrificed some typed damage resistance for global defense. 9% approximately. There is still decent Neg resistance, and while En resistance is light, it's definitely better than nothing. Plus, the big bonus from Murky Cloud is the end drain/recovery resistance, which is still at 85%, with 3 basic DR IOs it would be maybe 2% more, if that. I am more than comfortable with that.
I really don't see how I could improve my build looking at yours. I am not saying you have a bad build, but we aren't going for the same goals. Cheap and reasonable didn't even work it's way into the equation, I already had a S/L softcapped build that I have been using for well over a year. My goal was positionally softcapped defense in a useable form. Mission Accomplished. As for the expense, other than Gladiator's Armor which I saved the merits for, and the Numina and Miracle uniques, it was about 800 million. -
Postionally Softcapped, and the build is a bit unorthodox, but not an unholy mess. No Death Shroud or any real AoE damage to speak of, but I don't really need it for aggro. Between taunt, Soul Drain, Dark Consumption and Cloak of Fear, which is slotted for -tohit, aggro should be well in hand. This is designed for group play where damage is less of a priority, altho single target damage should be reasonable. And yes, there is no theft of essence proc in DR. I have got to the point where it just isn't worth it to me. I have been paying close attention lately, and it rarely goes off for me, no matter how many mobs are around.

Quote:I was thinking of doing it more for speed TF runs.I've actually been considering taking Teleport on my DA/Ice tank when I hit my 60 month reward (next month, yay!).
Picture it: Group of baddies just standing around, nothing anywhere around. Then, out of nowhere they are stunned, terrorized, and falling on their butts, all while really pissed at the guy who suddenly appeared in their midst.
Sounds like fun, doesn't it?
And on the defense thing, S/L is the easiest to go for, S/L/E/N is doable but you have to be a bit more careful in your build.
I, on the other hand, will be trying out a positionally softcapped build starting tonight, as I will finally have enough Hero Merits to get that damnable PvP IO. -
When I brought up Jebe's guide, it was because it is the only solid DA guide out there for tanks, and embodies pretty much the general framework of what the toughest DA tanks are doing, Dechs included. The only difference between Jebe's softcapped build and Dech's build is that they ran different secondaries. They both worked to softcap s/l/e/n defense.
While there is a lot of good info the thread Dechs started with his vid, the patience you would need to really gleen through it would be incredible to say the least.
Never intended it to turn into some bizarre DA pi$$ing contest. -
Quote:I wasn't saying shield wasn't set and forget. I was saying that sometimes "set and forget" will bite you the hindquarters. Having a button that will heal you for pretty much ALL of your HP that recharges every 13 seconds or so is a pretty nice thing. My guildmate's build is sitting around 36% S/L 30% E/N. He will not be hitting soft-cap due to the sacrifices that would be required for this to happen. His final build will be around 39% S/L/E/N and 20-25% Psi/F/C. The heal is what makes up all the difference for /Dark IMO. Well that and CLoak of Fear stacking with Touch of fear. Anything normally seen solo isn't even attacking after the first strike.
Shields on the other hand can hit the softcap to all but Psi and can use its IO investments for Recharge and Regen. I personally have a Shield Tanker that should be able to get pretty close to 400% regen. And that is very "set-n-forget" to me. Plus my Mezz clickie is on auto fire, so it may as well be a toggle.
Bottom line; MA/Shield seems the more Offensive combination while MA/Dark the more Defensive "scrap-troller" combination.
Don't forget that DA has a healthy dose of Psi resistance, is pretty easy to softcap to S/L, and has excellent resist to end drain.
Regen is nice and all, but you aren't going to regen fast enough to really do much good if the RNG hates you. More damage potential is useless if you are dead.
Oh, and while Touch of Fear does stack with Cloak of Fear, it really isn't pertinent to MA. -
Quote:My gf has had one of these since the CoV headstart, it is far from terrible. She mauls all kinds of stuff with it.My wife and I had the worst time with her brute, it never stood up to anything, Dark Melee/Fire armor. you'd think with the extra healing from dark it would stand up alright, but it never seemed to make a difference, especially with all the colourful damage you are facing redside. It went rogue and hasn't been touched since
-
well, now that the thread has been fully jacked, and I admit my part in it and feel kinda bad......
Jebe's main guide was built around building a tank that was going to be near impossible to kill in most situations.
Didn't mean to come off condescending, Nalrok, and yeah, coming from a brute perspective your point of view is going to be different than those coming from a tankers perspective. Many many tanks believe it is a mortal sin to die. I personally am not one of them. As far as ST is concerned, Jebe didn't like it, because it was of little use to him, as he was tough enough to not die in most conceivable situations.
Nothing wrong with not building towards the softcap. Before I started IOing, I had CoF AND OG. Again, you should take a look at the end of the guide, towards the end of it he mentioned other ways of going about things. Jebe was interested in different playstyles, and different ways of being effective. One of his projects was a fearbomb DA tank, completely built around extreme soft control through fear.
In a few days, I am completely reworking my build around positional defense, and yes, it will be softcapped, and surprisingly, it will probably do a good bit more damage AND have more utility. I started that project build back when I was tossing ideas back and forth with Jebe, and only really started looking at it again a couple months ago. Once that is done, am going offense and soft control heavy on my other build. -
Quote:It's not bad, it's just different from yours. And if you look a few posts down after it, you would also see that I disagree with him on that as well.I did, and... I'm not happy with it. While it's clear he's made his Dark tank into a veritable wall of fun, there are a lot of things he forgets to mention and quite frankly, his opinion on Soul Transfer is pretty bad IMHO.
Quote:He doesn't mention the GIGANTIC Psi resist values in Obsidian Shield and instead goes on to say it needs Steadfasts slotted into it for KB protection, when you could easily slot a Karma into Cloak of Darkness or take Acrobatics (since he mentioned the Leaping pool).
Don't skim, read.
Quote:He doesn't mention the EQUALLY GIGANTIC Endurance Drain resist values in Murky Cloud, which can really make a difference when fighting Carnies, Malta, Freaks, and anything with a substantial Endurance Drain in it's arsenal. (I laugh at Sappers.)
Quote:He doesn't mention the two most crucial parts about Soul Transfer:
-It's Autohit
-Magnitude 30 stun!
Soul Transfer is quite possibly the BEST way a Dark Tank can soak an Alpha, even if it does require dying in order to do it. Just hover your finger over that thing when your health goes red and then hammer is when it flashes red. Before that spawn has a chance to turn and attack your allies they're hit with the biggest stun of their lives, allowing you to mercilessly pick off each one of them before it wears off.
Quote:Plus, I can't remember when they implemented Darkest Night for Soul Mastery so I'm going to assume he didn't have the opportunity to mention it, as it's the keystone for my (and several of my friends') Dark Armor characters.
Quote:I'm not saying it's a bad guide. I'm just saying he's either unaware or apathetic to a few of Dark Armor's biggest key points. I'm hoping for the former, because the latter is just sad and does little for his know-how of DA in my eyes.
Read the whole thing. Actually read it, don't skim it. -
Quote:Lots of recharge and you will maul, love my claws/DA to deathThis is why I'm afraid of trying that Claws/DA brute. I have an SS/WP. He's level 34. He has tough and weave. He dies. All. The. Time.
I know the problem isn't the sets. The problem is me. I just can't brute!
But I will learn. Oh will I learn. And my claws/DA will rip faces off of anything he pleases.
end issues can be worked around. especially if you go with physical perfection and superior conditioning paired with the uniques. -
My DB/DA is 30 and pretty solid. The build I have set up for him once he hits 50 is positionally softcapped, with pretty solid resistance and 1580hp. Won't be taking any alpha's, but should be damn useful on teams.
-
Quote:"set and forget" until your health drops like a stone and you realize a heal button would be awesome. Once you softcap DA, it is a monster. Plus, i would rather have a clicky heal than clicky mez protection. For instance, I prefer a "set-n-forget" playstyle on my melee characters, which is why I love the Willpower set. So from this you can see why I have dabbled in /Dark but never committed to going all the way with one. Most of what I know on /Dark comes from duoing with my guildmates Dark/Dark scrapper and helping him IO it out.
Hope that helps a little Tex -
Quote:I have this problem, for awhile I had the same problem with brutes. That said, I still make sure my tank can do it's job, sometimes just in a roundabout way.Few things bug me more than this. Most people that do this are probably like me, in that they can't build a scrapper tough enough to survive what they want to fight. They're willing to kill slower to have an easier time making a tough character. I gave up on scrappers/brutes for the time and made a tank with the full intention of tanking.
I have a scranker myself, but it's actually the second build for my DA/Fire tank. With most teams, I play the unstoppable wall of unstoppableness build that taunts. The scranker only comes out on two occasions: Tanker Tuesday and any team with more than 5 defender/corruptors. On those occasions it is generally beneficial to be less survivable but have fireball, hasten, build up, and fireball.
Now I gotta figure out how to get my brutes where they can shame tanks, without gimping their damage. -
Quote:*sigh* it's called teamwork. Last STF I ran on my tank, the group wasn't comfortable with my pulling more than one AV at a time. I was perfectly comfortable, and was even being nice enough to try to keep them away from the stupid squishies in the group that thought it was ok to be in melee range of the AVs.I think some people want baby sisters an think tanks or brutes are is the problem.
Yesterday did a TF a blaster pulls the AV an expects to live lmao.
An having played a tank in many MMO's dps does not pull a boss less you plan on soloing it.
An if you can then all the power to you.
Soooooooo, guess who pulled the AVs....... The blaster. Then, being a tank that actually likes to do his job, I pulled the AV off the blaster BEFORE he died. -
Quote:I have been doing the same thing, DA is a bit of a different beast on other ATs, and my builds on each AT are measurably different.Maybe you won't, but I sure will.
Ok, so I know enough to realize that capping defense on a resistance set with an enormous heal makes for a tough character, even without any mitigation tools in the melee set. That doesn't make me an expert on DA by any measure.
What will make me an expert is a Dark Armor tour around the ATs, which I'm in the process of now. I will be combining Dark Armor with different melee sets on each character. My DA stalker just hit 36 last night. He is leveraging Ninja Blade's Divine Avalanche to maximize his survival, but the brute and scrapper I have planned will have no such tools. The brute is claws/DA and the scrapper is Kin/DA. One can stack stuns. The other rips faces off.
Once I'm done with this little tour, I'll feel much better about my DA knowledge. At that point, I plan on writing the MFing Dark Armor Guide, having tasted the set on four ATs, with and without mitigation tools in a melee set.
I plan on running CoF and or OG on my DB/DA stalker, which at 30 is wicked fun. I have a solid softcapped S/L build, still debating on if I want to run with Shadowmeld for "oh crap" moments.
Still trying to work out where I want to go with my Kat/DA Scrapper (level 36), I am eschewing heavy defense for heavy recharge and just plain kill kill kill power. Leveraging the hell out of Divine Avalance. The way I play my scrapper it should work well.
And like you, I went claws/DA on my brute. It's @38 right now, and I cannot stress enough how fun this toon is. Whirling blades of slashy dark death. I wade in, taking on a lot more than I "should" be able to take on, and ride that edge between victory and death the whole time. Once I finish my DA/DM tanks positional def build, I am torn between this toon and my stalker. I am seriously thinking of making this toon my main. And again, a very different build from my scrapper/tank/stalker. Tried KM/DA, got it into mid 20s but didn't care for it much. Lacked the speed of claws, which I really dig.
Quote:It's a good guide to be sure, though I couldn't disagree more with his opinion on Soul Transfer. I wish I'd have seen it before I made my DA tank, but then again, the conclusions he draws on set bonuses must be rather obvious if I made the same ones.
As far as his opinion on ST in that guide, scroll down a few posts in that thread, I completely disagree with him about Soul Transfer. I used to use ST strategically on a regular basis. My current build doesn't have ST, which annoys the hell out of me, but I am not going to waste a respec right before I19 drops(then again, i may have a freespec on him still). I decided to give OG another chance, still hate it. But, that's on my DA/DM, if I were stone melee, I would be all about it.
