The controversy over on GW2
Is anyone paying attention to that? It seems they are trying to turn that game into a gear grinder, and setting the stage for a Nexon-style cash shop. Also, they hired a new cash shop manager that used to work for Nexon, and was somewhat famous for revamping Maple Story's cash shop.
Go check out things over on their forums if you get bored. Its another clue as to why COH was shut down, as to the "new direction" NCSoft is going into. |
In terms of "Nexon style" cash shop? Are you meaning here that you will have to *buy* the weapons or something unrelated?
To be fair, I have yet to do any of the dungeons in GW2, and I have yet to complete exploring the map. I have however hit level 80, and gone beyond that quite a few times over (You don't actually stop levelling in Guild wars 2, you still get experiance, and when you "ding" again, you get another skill point).
I have yet to use any boosters or potions to "improve my game", nor have I bought anything from the Store. I have yet to feel "forced" into buying from the store.
- Dyes*
- Black Lion Chest keys*
- Character slots
- Upgrade your account to "digital collectors"
- (Fine) Transmutation Stones* (to change the look of a piece of armour or a weapon).
- Costume pieces (non combat)
- Forge Stone (used in crafting rare items)*
- Instant repair kits, Revive orbs, remote bank access, Black Lion Trader Express (to pick up your purchases remotely), Black Lion merchant Express (to sell your stuff without going to a vendor)
- XP, Crafting, Glory, Killstreak, Karma, Magic find boosters
- Mini pets
*These are earnable ingame, and most of the others can be found in Black Lion Chests, although the drop rate for the keys is fairly low, they can and do drop.
That is all there that you can *buy* off the Black Market Trader, I might have missed a few things, but if I have, it was only a minor thing. Right now, there are the consortium chests, which are for a limited time only, and apparently have some stuff in there that can *only* be found in there.
Yep. Just noticed that she's been working there since March and the NCSoft stock purchase didn't occur until May/June-ish.
As far as the Nexon-style cash shop goes, regarding buying gear, gambling boxes, etc., I think NCSoft wants to go that route (and why not, it makes a ton of money), but it will probably turn into a battle of wills between the vocal anti-pay2win crowd and NCSoft management. Even if they loose a lot of players it might still be worth it to force those changes. Or they could implement small changes here and there, that by themselves look innocuous, until one day you realize you might as well be playing a Nexon game.
I'm speculating, of course. After all this is the internet and this is what we do, but at least not baseless speculation.
EDIT: I also have GW2 but I haven't played it in over a month. I just got bored of it. I liked the original GW better.
MMM do we have* I told you so*or is it an oh dear moment. I read a post on facebook that Nexon forced this person on NCSoft before they would buy the shares,so who gets the blame for this .Not me for sure

Here's my theory on how all this relates to COH (in my best Matlock voice): Nexon/NCSoft realized COH itemization was too convoluted for the type of cash shop Nexon likes to operate. And besides, what are the most valuable items that ever go up for sale: Luck of the Gambler, new power sets, new story arcs? Are they worth $60 to $120? No way. The only thing worth that much in COH is a new expansion, like Going Rogue, but that is expensive content to make compared to some uber powerful gear that just requires a few art assets and data points.

Just wondering but how expensive were the account bound IO's to purchase as a set in Coty of Heroes?
|
http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/about_...gon_market.php
Interesting that the most expensive item on that list is "5 character slots" worth the equivalent of $20, while a the second most expensive item, a server transfer, was $10. I think I did pay for a server transfer once, but I think it was a 50% discount at the time (or maybe I had one saved up as a subscriber reward, I can't remember, but there's no way I would have paid $10 for a server transfer).
I just logged in and checked. They have 3 rare IO sets in the market right now, going from 712 to 800 points, which roughly translates into $10 a set. That sounds about right.
I'll look that up, but in the mean time check this out:

at 1600 points though, there were 5 Character slots, Enhancement Increase (per *row*), 5 Mission Architect slots.
The Who Will Die complete collection was 2400 points ($30), and 90 Enhancement Boosters were 1800 points ($22.50), although if you bought the Boosters in smaller packs it *could* cost $45 for the same number...
The dungeon changes each time you enter to diffrent zones and goes up in levels of difficulty. its been said that you need the new items by lvl's 10-20 and there percentage over exoctics is very small i believe the number being thrown round was 3%
its designed as a challenge but it does bring out the elitists as they only want people over stage lvl x but that could be said for any game even here in coh some people only wanted you on the states/lord r tfs if you were I-O'd up to the hilt and incarn
as zwigger pointed out in a thread awhile ago the population of a forum of players is very small percent and are very vocal cause...well...people that dont care are in game playing
i filled out the questionaire i was sent...cause....i actually play gw2 and im grateful they want my feedback
if you want to troll
this is just a suggestion find the questionaire (you dont need to sign in anyone can fill it in)
and
then bombing it with negativity
i would provide a link but im a firm believer that people should do a bit of leg work
as ive said in previous posts (prob got deleted)
i look at ways id exploit something im a villain and a eve player
and yes i do think there stiupid for doing a open questionaire
that was a bit longer post than i expected
have fun and enjoy your last week of playing

When they came out I finally just bought a couple of sets myself and dont even remember the couch change that I spent on those sets.

not much at all.

But thankfully someone answered the question.
between £7 and £8 per set (roughly) if i convert from points to Real World money (700-800 points).
So not *exactly* cheap, and if you were paying a subscription fee on top... I would put this into Pay 2 Win category (even if the game was balanced around SO's, selling power directly does irk me... especially in a game where people have said that it was casual friendly).
A loot based fantasy mmo with dungeons turning into a gear grinder?
say it isnt so!
Expensive for someone is inexpensive for another...

I ask because the Paragon Wiki doesn't list the cost for the IO sets that you could purchase.

Main Hero: Chad Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1396 Badges
Main Villain: Evil Gulzow-Man (Victory) 50, 1193 Badges
Mission Architect arcs: Doctor Brainstorm's An Experiment Gone Awry, Arc ID 2093

Man, if only someone had put together a spreadsheet that showed the cost of every single item on the Paragon Market...
|
*blinks at the costs....*
The rares are not *too* bad, although the higher end sets are what was reported (or at least in spitting range).
*spits coffee over his computer screen*
The purple sets though.... that is taking the chronic piss.
People are freaking out because they added a new tier for rings and back slot items.

GW2 cost too much to develop. They will not be able to push first-release-sized expansions as they did with GW1 so they will be forced to milk the hell out of that cash shop.
CALLED IT! (I know I should hunt for my post on this but meh... although maybe I should, so I can say "TOLD YOU" to the ones that told me "you are ignoring the history of Arena.net and GW1".

Now give a star to those "doomcryers" who said that Freedom wouldn't even last a year.
I'll give them only half a star, because although they were technically correct, CoH Freedom did not fail. It was profitable and was on an upswing (if you look at the last reporter quarter year to year.) CoH was killed for entirely undisclosed reasons, but it was NOT because it failed. So, again, half a star. Actually, just 2 arms of the star.

Q1 2011 = 3,051 Million Won
Q2 2011 = 2,787 Million Won
Q3 2011 = 2,812 Million Won
Q4 2011 = 3,435 Million Won
Q1 2012 = 2,890 Million Won
Q2 2012 = 2,855 Million Won
It is a shame that the announcement came when it did, and that NCsoft rolled CoX figures into "others" for their 3rd Quarter report, because it would have been interesting to see.
But even so, looking at the increase of trade that the introduction of Freedom had, and then the drop off the *following* quarter, shows that it wasn't sustaining its momentum (there was almost a 20% drop from Q4 2011 to Q1 2012) . Although it was up for Q2 2012, Q1 2012 was down by roughly 5%.
Anyways, the fact that you "called it" actually shows that you didn't actually read the article, nor have you played Guild Wars 2, nor have you read what is actually available on their Store... (here is a hint, you cannot directly buy items for Real World Cash, and what is available for "Gems only" is nothing that has player stats....

New Webcomic -- Genocide Man
Life is funny. Death is funnier. Mass slaughter can be hilarious.
It seems they are trying to turn that game into a gear grinder, and setting the stage for a Nexon-style cash shop. |
They've had "gamble" boxes right from the start called Black Lion chests, another box that gives random non combat pets, and a third ready to sell just for Halloween.
Go check out things over on their forums if you get bored. Its another clue as to why COH was shut down, as to the "new direction" NCSoft is going into. |
