Rumor - Disney sets it sights on Hasbro
Yeah...to get the originals in it would probably take more CGI than they'd be able to budget for

I expect Chewbacca as Wookies live a long time and the Droids in the new movies for certain.
Also, may episode 7 show once and for all that Luke and Leia learn who their mother is. It took WAY too many years in the EU novels to happen due to Lucas' rule to all writers "DO NOT TOUCH THE PREQUEL ERA, DO NOT MENTION THEIR MOTHER" only for years later after Ep 3 to reveal that deep inside Artoo's memory banks are copies of the footage of the temple slaughter, padme facing anakin on mustafar and her giving birth to them and then dying......ugh
Actually, I think it's possible it might be a very bad thing for the fans.
George Lucas, for all of the "lost his way" talk about Star Wars, is unique among creators/owners of big-time franchises: he still has a little bit of his hippie, "everybody share the love" mentality from his formative years in the late '60s and early '70s. Disney has been known to litigate the hell out of people who use their characters. Among others, they've sued a day care, artists, a Girl Scout troop and even a grandmother who painted a giant-sized Goofy for her grandson's birthday. George Lucas, on the other hand, lets people have fun with Star Wars. Many have pointed to this attitude as instrumental to keeping the franchise alive between movies and have used it as an example of how letting go of a little bit of control can reap huge dividends in return. Disney isn't like that. They are a draconian corporation in every dark sense. They aren't Paramount Studios-level stupid (but then few are), but it's possible their ownership will have a chilling effect on Star Wars fandom. |

Just a rumor, but MTV geek is reporting that Disney is in secret talks to acquire Hasbro. If it's true and if both parties agree to the buy out then it would give Disney the rights to Transformers, GI Joe, MLP, and every other Hasbro property. If it's true seems like the House of Mouse is on a mad shopping spree. Wonder if anyone can convince them to buy the City of Heroes IP

I actually saw a very interesting discussion on what happens with intellectual property rights when the author/creator dies and doesn't make solid plans for handling it. The worst that can happen is a creative property just dies because whoever controls the rights doesn't want to let them be used anywhere. Usually in some misguided vision that they are being protected.
It looks more like Lucas looked at things and decided ahead of time to sell the rights off and enjoy the retirement.
oh and the mentioned article is Here by Author Kristine Kathryn Rusch.

If Disney tightens the reins on the material, it could be that future EU stuff might begin to be canonical...

In contrast, George Lucas only had one rule when it came to fan creations: don't sell it. Everything else was acceptable. He gave us free access to play in his galactic sandbox as long as we don't profit from it. There's even a Lucas-endorsed contest for Star Wars fan-films that has been running for a number of years.
Disney could easily kill all of this, unless George managed to get a clause into the contract about it, or otherwise convinces Disney that being so aggressive with legality is completely unnecessary. Highly unlikely though. Disney reached Paranoid Pictures status when they registered "Snow White" as a trademark. It's still pending I believe, but if it's granted, that will create an unbelievable shockwave of legal issues. Done with the disguise of not wanting anyone to make naughty parodies of the character, granting of the trademark will have essentially enabled Disney to steal a public domain property, because the name "Snow White" not only covers their adaptation, but ALL uses of the name, including the original fairytale.
((Oops, just realized I posted the following in the wrong thread...))
If Disney wants to use Vader in a new movie there is a very easy and acceptable way to do so - don't call the movie Episode VII and instead set it a few years after Episode III.
There's a span of 16-18 years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope that has never been touched. This material is ripe for development as you can use Vader, Boba Fett, Yoda, Obi-Wan, younger versions of Han and Lando, etc., without resorting to any kind of goofy (no pun intented) plot twists to explain how fan favorites who either apparently, or obviously, died are back.
Hell, in Lucas' tradition of changing things to make them fit, you could even relable ANH, TESB and ROTJ as Episodes VII, VII and IX, and call the new trilogy Episodes IV, V, and VI.
I think this would make much more sense and would be far more readily accepted than trying to continue the story post-ROTJ with a new cast, etc.

I love you mousedroid, but, would like to point out the fresh irony in your name...

I wouldn't mind them continueing the adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han, and using new actors for the roles, then having Mark, Carrie, and Harrison in as cameos or as more than a cameo but new role.
Or they could CGI de-age the originals enough to do the Thrawn trilogy.....
To be honest from a nostalgia standpoint I'd love to see the originals in the new movies......but so many years have passed it would be almost as bad as Shatner trying to stuff himself back into a Starfleet uniform again to reprise Kirk.....
