PWE Licencing Corruption Is Bunk!
Thank you, BaBs that is along the lines of what I was waiting for. But, no offense, there are many like me that have a feeling off ill will, and are hoping for a ray of light not involving PW/Cryptic. If it does happen, though, I ask that the lines of communication with the players stay open, like this dev team has done. The "closed off" approach is what is hurting a certain other Once Giant, now hemoraging, portion of the MMO industry.
The more I think about this theory the less credible it becomes.

1. That's not how licensing agreements normally work in these situations. It would be the incredibly stupid exception to a very boringly universal rule.
2. It would be a publicity nightmare for Perfect World, and these things cannot remain a secret forever.
3. You'd have to count on NCSoft not explicitly stating this as the excuse to shut down CoH, which they have every reason to do to make themselves look better.
4. They would have known this was coming because nobody renegotiates licenses a couple weeks before expiration.
5. Perfect World has no motive: the competition between CO and CoH was not fierce, and explicitly not critical to PW.
Means, motive, and opportunity all looked extremely shaky with this theory from day one. The only shred of "evidence" for this theory appears to be "I hate Jack, so its probably true." Which links Jack to the Kennedy assassination and Hurricane Andrew just as well.

Don't let us get you into more trouble!
Just for the record, I was not here when Jack was here and have zero of that animosity that some have. Not that it was unclear that I was making a joke, but I just felt the need to further distance myself from any of that stuff.
Still... I've never heard where he was the night Bruce Wayne's parents were killed...

I believe all of us are hoping that this issue gets resolved and we can still play our characters next year with quality updates, but Cryptic seems to be a decent place for the devs to go since there must be a bunch of former colleagues there.
The first step in being sane is to admit that you are insane.
I'm still a skeptic here. Jack was missing Friday? Why?
I love you BaBs, but where is still Jack stepping up and stating he had nothing to do with it. Until NcSoft and Jack BOTH debunk this I am not convinced. It may still be a rumor, but after years of listening to Jack state that things weren't in his "Vision" for the game I'm unconvinced until he steps forward and states something for the record. Yes, I'm hurt, but we still have no clear answers. Until then I won't touch Champions or give Cryptic any money. Am I reading too much into an absence, maybe, but I just want to be cautious with someone, that in the past, created a lot of animosity with the player base. |
While this is good news in that whoever might acquire City of Heroes should also have access to the game engine, it unfortunately shed no more light on the reasons other than the other rumors and suppositions as to why a game with an extremely loyal fan base, paying subscribers and numerous paragon market purchases was suddenly and unceremoniously ended, and its hard working development team who gave years of their lives, time, effort, energy and passion were "laid off" with no notice whatsoever.
Its still a puzzlement to me which leaves me heartbroken, with almost zero desire to play anymore. I am glad that Cryptic has been exonerated from these internet rumors as I am sure that while people there no longer work on the game, obviously many there have labored to give us the game we love and quite a few are players who love it also.
Man I hope this game gets saved..
The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

Hell, he's not going to remember that, but I'm going to be giggling my *** off anyway.

During Q&A time with Jack, I pont-blank asked him if there was any truth to the rumors about expired licensing agreement with Cryptic's COH engine. He was taken aback about this, unaware of such rumors going around. His response was that NCSoft has the license to use the CoH engine "in perpituity" for both "City of Heroes/City of Villains" as well as a 2nd game.
This openness is refreshing. You are awesome, Bab.
