Those who were VIP on 8/31/2012 will continue to be VIP; just without being billed, until November 30, 2012.

Well I canceled my subscription because I don't trust NCsoft. I don't mind though because I'm filled out Tier 9. Thanks for letting me know!

Just wondering cause I have put off everything else to live the last days of Villainy on Victory with my friends and family I have made there over the years.

You have to remember, it will also make the RMT spammers VIP will full access to email and sending tells.
Do you think people will want to spend the last months getting a tell every 5 seconds "Hello--this is gday2012"? Or having their email fill up with spam so fast they aren't able to receive emails from friends they are communicating with?
I've heard that before the game went free-to-play, trial accounts originally had full chat and email privileges and people were being flooded with spam. That is why the chat and email restrictions were locked out to tier 2 premium players to avoid that behavior.

However, this doesn't preclude them pushing everyone to VIP later on; they've said they have some surprises in store.

Personally speaking, I'd been planning to VIP this month after my paycheck came in (which was yesterday). I'd really like to at least have access to some additional character slots and play in the CC before it goes the way of the dodo.
I'm in full support of this idea. I think it'll restore a little of the goodwill that they lost by doing this.
In regards to the concerns about the RMT spammers, I don't think it'd be an issue. They know that a dead game holds no profit and at this point, City of Heroes is dead. They won't be an issue, but if they are there are ways to block them quite easily. There's an option to only allow mail from friends/supergroup members, plus you can hide yourself from searches which will limit random RMT tells unless they're in the same zone as you.

I am fully in support of this, as someone who has let her VIP status lapse, and thus will never get to complete all of the I-23 Incarnate Trials, or post goodbyes on the Virtue server forums, or any of a few dozen other things that I'd like to do.

Maybe in October/November, but as a prerequisite, disable any new account creation so only people with past accounts can come back. RMT/Spammers/Other Idiocy: get banned, goodbye forever.
Yup, some of us were planning to resub when the next issue came out but get nothing. Those that were active on the day of the annoucement get up to 3 months free. The rest of us get nothing. Way to go out with a whimper instead of with a bang.
To be honest, i wish they would unlock everything, and make all IO's and things free, i want to spend the last months with my friends kicking butt and having a good time, no more grind, no more waiting, no more work, I've been working on toons for 5 years, i don't mind the work, but if there is no way for me to enjoy the fruits of my labor anymore, then i would like to just enjoy the fruits of NC soft labor instead, as people not being able to resub or keep VIP status well i am not sure how they should deal with that people that only subbed when new content was close to being released might just be stuck without VIP, and why not, there is no new content, you were not VIP before, so why does it matter now suddenly, because the game is shutting down. i cant think of a reason, other then you feel like IF they do something interesting and neat , like unlock the entire game you'll be screwed, because you only support the game when it's convenient for you wile the ppl who have VIP now and forever, did so regardless of new content, they did so because they love the game, and the staff, maybe if more ppl subscribed all the time, and not just when new issues were about to come out, we wouldn't be closing down -.- keep in mind i use the words "you" generally, i just mean the ppl running around freaking about because they didn't auto subscribe and may miss out on anything cool that happens in the next few weeks, which could be nothing anyways, I'm talking to the the "how come they get VIP and i don't, because i didn't reup my account in time!?" people, the answer is pretty simple, because you didn't reup your account in time, lol granted no one saw this coming, but the NC soft people, notice they shut it down on the 30'th, and are leaving it going until Nov. supposedly which is long enough not to have refund a lot of people, i suspect.
In the end Villains always win, all will kneel to the mighty dollar, ruler of the Earth,destroyer of good and righteousness the world over.

I would pay 3 months subscription to ride the game out to the end.
I'm not sure if it's a bug with the forums or what, but I keep randomly getting VIP forum access, which then lets me see at least the Beta forums on the index. However, it usually goes away after a few page changes.
Perhaps they're trying to get something in place.
