I'll be boycotting...
It's kind of funny that they'd take the axe to City of Heroes when they were blaming Aion for their financial problems, though. Unless Aion is also getting killed off ...

CoH did about $2.5M in the last quarter, pretty much the same as the quarter before it, and the quarter before that, etc...
AION did about $33M in the same quarter, as opposed to $47M in the previous quarter.
In other words, CoH was a marginal proposition that was going to continue to be a marginal proposition. AION, on the other hand, they probably believe they can nurse into a big rebound.
I'll be boycotting everything NCsoft related once CoH goes dark.
http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/08...6m-loss-in-q2/ Based on that, it seems they are banking on GW2 over CoH. And I say you spread the word and DONT let anyone buy or play GW2. Show the evil South Korean NCsoft execs what happens when you fight against Superheroes and villains, for the purpose of "War"!!! |

It's actually not that strange, if you look at their recent financials.

I think they held onto CoH just until GW2 came out. In the last reported quarter CoH was 44% of the revenue from NA and Europe. Now I expect the next few quarters you will see a big uptick due to GW2. Then I expect ArenaNet devs will be next unless GW2 has a significant real money store bringing in regular income.

Also, there were announcements from a year or so ago involving Aion shutting down a number of its servers. I didn't think they were making more money than City of Heroes in spite of all that.
Too late, the bastards waited until after they got our thirty quid for GW2 before announcing this. Knew I should have held off.
Frankie says it best.
I have no desire to buy anything NCSoft makes either. The a few things mildly interest me, like the GW games, but I will never play them now.
If they had shut down the game gracefully, at a proper pace instead of this abrupt fashion, I might forgive them, but not now, not ever.
What I'm saying is I won't be buying anything from NCsoft again, but mostly because City of Heroes was the only game they owned which was worth a crap.

Thanks for making it easy, Sam, by posting something I so thoroughly agree with.
My postings to this forum are not to be used as data in any research study without my express written consent.
Huh. I was thinking that Aion wasn't doing nearly as well as City of Heroes, given the context of that article linked earlier.

Hell, even the *original* Guild Wars has brought in 1/2 the cash of CoX (granted, different finance setup for that I would imagine) And in the whole of 2011, it brought in 3/4's the CoX amount.
Strange times indeed.
To be honest, the consolidation of servers before heading to F2P/Hybrid model is nothing strange... it can help maintain a healthy player base in the end.

At least they are not closing the game down *tomorrow*.
Same here. I am never playing another NC Soft game again. I don't think I'll be gaming anymore after this, but if I were ever even curious about playing another game, NC Soft's products will not make it onto my short list.

Though, in Aion's case, it sounded less like a server merge and more like a short window to get your character moved to another server before the server was taken offline.
Well... to be honest, there are 3 months left (apparently) for the game to be closed down in. The 1st announcement of game closure are *always* a shock to the system.

Yeah, that's abrupt.
I've been playing this game since i0. I can't believe it's going away... that's like finding out the neighborhood mean kid randomly killed your puppy.
However, I will not be boycotting NCSoft.
GW2 is a fantastic game. And ArenaNet no more deserves your scorn and disdain than Paragon does. These studios are owned by NCSoft, but they are NOT NCSoft. Blaming Anet for what NCSoft does is stupid. I'm sure that right now, Anet is banging their heads on the wall at what a stupid, utterly boneheaded move this is, and now it hurts THEM too.
My heart is breaking for CoH. I played over 30 characters, many to 50, in the almost 8 years I was here. It changed my life in many ways, and the way in which NCSoft has chosen to do this is not only stupid and senseless, but cruel.

After learning what exactly happened behind the scenes with Tabula Rasa's shutdown, and the abrupt death of City of Heroes here (several months' notice before shutdown aside), I am not willing to spend money to support games and developers under NCSoft's control, no matter how fun their games may be. It's just not worth it, and I don't feel like I should be obligated to continue playing other NCSoft titles just to support the other studios it owns.
Yeah, but in the middle of development with a new patch posted yesterday, so no warning to the devs, no gradual slowing down of new content, just one day rolling along, the *bam* shut down with the devs not even sure they'll still have forum access next week?
Yeah, that's abrupt. |
I know that for the Tabula Rasa closing event, some of the ex developers came in to help run (and code) the final event for *free*.
Yes, TR didnt have official forums, but that was before the whole restructure of NCsoft West so that it was the studio who was responsible for community stuff, and not NCsoft (and the decision was made before launch that there would be no official forums along similar lines to Guild Wars)
And yes, TR was mid development cycle (player controlled tanks being one), Earth zones being coded etc etc when the announcement came out (You have to remember that TR was young, so it wasnt hitting "expansion stage"...
Pretty much whenever you cancel an MMO, it will *always* be mid development... normally with the next 2 or 3 parts being simultaneously developed.
And some day NCSoft will do the same thing to ArenaNet that it has done to Paragon Studios, Destination Games, and all the other studios NCSoft has published games for that have since been axed.

Yes, i am still bitter over the closure of Bullfrog.

If in 8 years, GW2 ends the same way, I will still have the memories of an amazing game and the friends I meet there. I'm not going to shoot myself in the foot and screw over what is probably the best development team out there, comparable to the Paragon team, just to piss off some suits in Korea who won't even notice.
To be honest, considering that *non* MMO publishers shut down studios in a similar fashion, get out of playing computer games full stop...
Yes, i am still bitter over the closure of Bullfrog. |
But in those cases, at least you can still play the games they developed. So long as they haven't done something like require an internet connection to a B.net-like service that's no longer around when the company is axed ...
And you know what? I wouldn't throw away my almost-8 years in CoH because of the way it ended.

Me, I'd rather not spend any more money on games published by a company with a track record of closing them in the manner that it has.
Im sorry you touch this you burn.
No ncsoft products no cryptic/pw products and I will say never touch any of them again.
Boycott Ncsoft if they close down Coh.

Tera is mostly a competitor to Blade and Soul, since its development team is made up of people who jumped ship from NCsoft to form their own studio and release a rival product, or so the Internet says. I will tell you one thing, though - for all that's wrong with that game, its combat system looks and feels a lot better than GW2. More limiting, sure, but then GW2 plays almost exactly like the Secret World, which I found to make my wrists hurt.
|
my loyalty is to CoH, not NCsoft. i have no problem not buying anything from them again.
however if some one manages to get a more constructive means of saving the game going i'll be all for it
I was too distracted by The Secret World to pick up GW2 when it launched. I was going to, eventually, but now I won't.
I thought WildStar was looking very interesting, it definitely had my curiosity piqued, but now I'll quit following it. Sorry, WildStar.
NCSoft will get no more of my money. CoH is the game that would have been on my computer forever.
