Trying Mastermind... again...
I have found that the combination of Necro/Nature keeps me quite busy. The littlest uglies are quite squishy so require me to actively heal/buff to keep them alive. So far all the pets tend to bunch together pretty well, which makes aiming the cone heal very easy.
Endurance is practically a non-issue if I stand in the middle of the "Life Giving Spores", and they provide some nice healing to everyone while I wait for my cone heal to recycle. I am still learning how to best use "Wild Growth" and "Wild Bastion". "Growth" seems to be the type of thing I want to use all the time (or at least as much as it is available), and "Bastion" seems to be a pretty good "Panic Button" as well as a good buffer for an expected tough fight like an EB. "Growth" seems like it should be pretty easy permeable, but "Bastion" looks like it will require significant investment to do so (if it is even possible). The pets hit hard, but seem to take damage pretty easily too, so as I said that keeps me pretty active. I will definitely be taking this character into the mid 30s to see if I will enjoy her enough to bother with IOs and sets. |
It depends on what you mean by "perma" with bastion. Assuming your pets don't take any damage, at very high recharge you can refresh the absorb as soon as it fades naturally, IIRC. I *think* the absorb lasts 60s - but I could be wrong.
Generally, I throw out bastion as soon as it recharges - I do all 3 together actually, OG->bastion->wild so I basically pause for ~8s or so to buff every 60s (Note: Wild Growth has a longer duration, so you don't have to do this, I just do them together so I don't forget).
Overgrowth can be perma'd as well, but it's a lot of work & IMHO getting it down to <10s recharge is fine.

sure, but you can not do it all at the same time with the same build. you have to choose a winning strategy and stick with it.
|
In fact, my Ninja/Time/Scorpion build does it so well that some friends have made their own versions of my mastermind because they enjoy the power.
you can't survive if you don't have sufficient defense. |
Not to mention you have Bodyguard which literally doubles (or triples) your total HP because the damage gets spread out to your pets.
you can't defeat strong enemies unless you have enough debuff tools. regeneration debuff being the most important. that the reason why traps, time and dark are so popular. |
It should also be mentioned that not everyone runs on +4 settings. Most people are content to run on +0 where you should be able to destroy anything with a little effort.
that's the point. may be you can drive an AV up the wall, but you can't kill it. no reg debuffs, no res debuffs. and regardless of defense they still hit your pets and kill them with one-two shots. on other hand you can have certain skills that allow you to control an AV with one and single application. caltrops and lightning storm have magnitude 50 (!) fear. slow them on top of that and AVs will just run about forever doing nothing but bagging damage. |
Over all, I think we can draw the conclusion that you really do not understand how to play Masterminds. If you did, you would not be spouting all the false premises that you are. You assume that certain things can't be done when many of us do them or have seen it done quite frequently. Like, you assume that without debuffs you can't kill an AV.

Whoops guess you can't explain how a */FF Mastermind can still destroy AVs. It's as simple as unleashing all your pets on the AV and watch him melt. Debuffs just speed up your kill speed. Lack of debuffs doesn't mean you can't defeat Arch-villains.

Yes, you can do it all at the same time. I do it all at the same time on a regular basis.

just to get the tank and debuffs to a considerable level will leave just enough slots for pets and that's all. there no much room for getting and slotting personal attacks unless you sacrifice tank or debuffs strength.
Hello. EVERY mastermind secondary has ample access to survival tools. Plus if that isn't enough, you can pick up Tough/Weave; most take Hover or Combat Jumping; and there is usually a decent Resist/Defense toggle available in your Epic sets.
|
Not to mention you have Bodyguard which literally doubles (or triples) your total HP because the damage gets spread out to your pets.
|
Then explain to me how a Force Field mastermind does it? You do realize your pets do have access to their own buffs and debuffs right in their own attack chains. Not to mention you can grab Interface when you hit 50 and add nice little debuffing effects to your pets' attacks.

I second this. Hell, in another topic he mentioned how the Mastermind shouldn't use personal attacks because it would draw aggro. He specifically mentioned that it is not good if the MM is taking hits. This unfortunate child doesn't understand bodyguard mode!

get yourself spanked and drained by surgy and then praise further the invincibility of the bodyguard mode. or run after scrappy like hell without slows.
I would recommend to you Dech's Mastermind guide, as it's the best I've seen, but I don't think you'd get anything out of it. You'd most likely ignore all of it and proclaim it to be crap and/or a bunch of lies.
Name a situation that a bots/traps mm can't handle. It really can, and does do it all. Often while asleep at the wheel.
Most of the time I 'wing it' with new characters until level 32 and SOs. Once I am level 33 (so I have some slots in my 32 power) I decide if the character is a 'keeper', and if so I will spend time in MIDs on a build and influence on IOs.
|
Again if your cool with that then it's all good.
Personally I create the build and then determine if I am okay with the limitations before I spend my time even creating the costume. My Demon Pain was such a build. I could see that 2/8 might be the max and I was fine with that. Incarnates allow me to do 4/8 but normally I don't count them for build consideration. Alpha is the only one because of what I mentioned previously.

So far I've been fine with never opening Mids. I'm sure I will eventually, but for now I'm good without it.
no you doing it "halfway" if you spread slots/skills too much around you have weak tank/buffs, weak attacks and weak debuffs.
just to get the tank and debuffs to a considerable level will leave just enough slots for pets and that's all. there no much room for getting and slotting personal attacks unless you sacrifice tank or debuffs strength. that's my point i tried to explain. tough/weave have much more use then personal attacks. yeah, so what? /sonic have no heals to heal you. a build that can not compete without incarnates is a pitiful one. well, the whole game is build around the idea to become "strong" within the game world. +0x1 isn't strong, it isn't a challenge. i've killed enough AVs and GMs to see that base damage isn't enough to get the job done. even with bots -regen. loooolzzzzz get yourself spanked and drained by surgy and then praise further the invincibility of the bodyguard mode. or run after scrappy like hell without slows. |

While I'm at it, there's a bit in this Peter Cook sketch of a coal miner and his writings, in the publisher's response to his novel, that makes me want to figure out some way of making an image macro of it.
Back to the ops original question:
Try a Demon/Dark Mastermind and take a whip attack or two.
The whip attacks are active and pretty and have a reasonable -res debuff that is useful from lvl 1 to lvl 50+3.
Dark seconday is useful and let you throw out debuffs and fears and holds to your hearts content that always feel like your DOING something, not just Shield & Snooze. It also has a single awesome attack that just happens to rez everybody around you. It does have a final additional pet at level 38, but with a little recharge I just use it as an attack by dropping it into the middle of groups.
I think this set will give you the "feel" of what you want. From a low level, you'll be up fighting WITH your henchmen, (I'd still let them get aggro first) instead of just buffing them and standing in the back. Also, demons are some of the most self sufficient pets with their early on self heals and build in DR resists.
If you just want to try really active and don't care about min/max, take whatever primary appeals to you with a poison secondary. You'll solo well, and the only thing worse than being eaten by zombie is getting eaten by zombie while someone pours acid and poison on you.
To second what insomniac said, while poison might not be the greatest from a min/max perspective, it's definitely busy.
That...was a Herocon 09 exclusive easter egg. The powerset will not have doves associated with it.
Namely because you guys would want to color tint the damn doves, or make them hawks/ravens/flying sharks/etc and that's just a headache I do...not...want...to deal with. |
As long as nature is very busy, you should be good okay. I really like traps and storm for mm secondaries because they both play very aggressively. There is always something for you to do, either positioning, or setting up to do some damage. Wish I had more for you.
