Airwolf documentary coming?

I don't know if you could do a reboot. The general concept was particular for the era, a private or secret organization with a piece of highly advance technology that outclasses anything else available in the world. We had Knight Rider, Airwolf, Street Hawk, Thunder in Paradise, The Highwayman, Viper and probably a show or two I can't remember off hand.

The problem is we're now a war weary country and I don't think a show about a covert super attack helicopter that intervenes around the world for US interests would be of interest to the general TV audience. Perhaps if the group controlling it had no loyalty to a particular country but intervenes only for the good of the world (yes then it would be like Gundam 00 but with helicopters). Yes I do remember that every week Archangel had to beg String and Dom to use it for the cause of the week.

The re-image of Knight Rider died a quick death and I don't think any network would risk re-imaging any of those other series, even a network as desperate as NBC.

The new Knight Rider suffered from too many cast members and characters, while it makes sense for Knight Rider to have a support team there was just too many. By the time they decided to cut some characters the damage was done.

While I can agree that some war weariness has set in, a rebooted Airwolf tackling some of the modern world issues may not be so bad. When Airwolf first premiered our relations with certain countries were......strained,,,,to put it nicely. Like Dominic said in the pilot movie "Libya?! That's Khadaffi's sandbox, he doesn't like us!" Hawke's response: "And we don't like him!" A few new episodes showing terrorists being blasted may anger some and bring smiles to others. Plus with a certain Soviet leader these days making threatening noises about resuming the Cold War, etc. etc. etc. then new episodes of a new Airwolf outfighting the Russians would again fit with the times, just like back then before they lightened up the show a bit.

Also can you imagine the tech and firepower a modern revamped Airwolf could have?

A reboot would be cool, but I fear the show would try and top the previous airwolf in some ridicuolus way like an all polymetal allow chopper powered by unicorn farts so that it cleanses the atmosphere saving whomever from certain doom.

To be honest, I'd rather just see a next next gen helicoptor as a rebooted Airwolf (that would probably be pretty wild) with a focus on characters and good story telling.

One of the points was that Airwolf looked like an everyday commercial helicopter, a wolf in sheep's clothing so to speak. Other than going NOTAR there really hasn't been a lot of advances to the look of commercial helicopters.

You could always do it with a completely different, darkly cynical tone. Something like they did with Galactica.

As for other shows in a similar vein, look at the Gerry Anderson back catalogue...

Sadly I think the only way you'd have a show today centered around a believable "super-advanced" helicopter would be to have some kind of UAV. The future of combat aircraft is clearly going towards unmanned automated systems. The downside of that of course is that you wouldn't need a cool human pilot who'd serve as the main character of a show based on that.

Basically what I'm saying is that the days of shows like Airwolf and Knight Rider are probably better left as fond memories of the 80s.

that would be cool for a new airwolf series.

in the case of the new knight rider, i loved the show myself but i didnt like the terrorist of the week format because to me they stepped away from the original format. by the time they went back to the format the damage was done and the show was canceled.

This is an Airwolf.

Funny. Rewatching that intro for the first time in decades I just noticed the body count in the INTRO is higher than some modern action shows runs.

How about near the end of the pilot when a very angry Stringfellow Hawke used Airwolf to chase down its renegade creator Dr. Moffat? HAwke's orders from Archangel were to bring Moffat back for trial for treason among other charges and that if that couldn't be done then Hawk was authorized to use extreme prejudice.

Does shooting all of Airwolf's missiles at one man standing on top of a sand dune count as extreme prejudice or just plain old fashioned overkill?

I don't know, a rebooted Airwolf could be done as long as they aren't forced to lighten up the show like the original was. The new Airwolf helicopter would have to be sufficiently upgraded compared to the original in terms of tech and capabilities but that wouldn't be impossible. The stories would be the make or break much like the Knight Rider reboot. That series had too many characters for too long.

KITT isn't a UAV?!

And, whilst UAVs are demonstrably effective for air v ground, they are still unproven Air v Air.

Thats true, but perhaps they could just go the Blue Thunder route (man that was a cool movie and IIRC one of the inspirations for Airwolf)

I wonder how well a Blue Thunder type TV show would work today? The movie's conspiracy premise certainly wouldn't be to out of touch.

edit --> Huh didn't know there was a Blue Thunder TV series (only 11 airings), was checking Netflix to see if they had the movie down for streaming.
