Starter package

Hi all,

Are there any good start-up purchase options for CoH? I have a friend who might be interested in playing, but a sub is not an option at this point.

The best I can think of is the Going Rogue box in terms of value.

It would be nice if there was an option in the 20-30 dollar range with a bundle of things like costumes / points / reward tokens / ect. I know steam sells these for other free2play mmo games.

Any word that something like this might be on the horizon?

I thought they had a starter bundle unless that was limited time.... the power ups, the one 30 day jet pack, are a good starting items. like ninja/beast run are a good perma travel power too.

alignment system is nice to have too so it gives you more zones to go to vill/hero side.

probably one thing thats a lot of fun if your into all the costume creating is the super tailor access.

I thought they only had the VIP starter which has occasionally been very cheap, but I don't think it includes any extras.

The New Player Pack is available for free in the Paragon Market for new accounts. It can only be "purchased" once per account.

Also, GameStop's website is currently selling the VIP Starter Kit for $9.99. Just do a search for "City of Heroes" and it's the only thing tht comes up. That same VIP Starter Kit is currently $14.99 on the NCSoft site.

Get them the VIP Starter Kit, then get them the free New Player Pack from the Paragon Market and they'll be ready for the first 30 days.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Does that include anything other than 1 month VIP? It doesn't seem to . . .

Hmm.. not sure how it works now but... On Amazon you can get Going Rogue: Complete, CoV: Collectors and Architect Edition for $25.35 (so free shipping). I assume all the old stuff from that is still valid, in which case thats $25 for 3 months worth of subscription (and so 4 reward tokens, I think). Combine that with the refer a friend program, to give them another 500 points (and a free month for you).

Anyone know if that would work?

There are many free costumes and other things for VIP's so just including VIP itself is a big bonus.

30 Days of VIP time. 1 Server Transfer Token. 400 Paragon Points. Access for 30 days to all Free to VIP content and powersets that they wouldn't have access to as an F2P account. Any Free for VIP costumes they use on characters during that 30 days can still be worn after the VIP time expires unless they try to edit that costume slot.

You make it sound like 30 days of VIP gets you nothing. Since it's a discounted price from the normal subscription it's a bit of a bargain. Add the free New Player Pack to that and they've got a pretty nice package going for 30 days for less than the normal monthly subscription rate.

That will give them time to try powersets that they'd have to purchase if they were on an F2P account. It would give them time to try costumes they'd have to purchase if they were on an F2P account. It gives them time to try Controllers and MasterMinds that they'd have to purchase (or get far enough in the Reward Tiers) if they were on an F2P account. Time to try the Signature Story Arcs they'd have to purchase if they were on an F2P account. Time to try Praetoria and First Ward that they'd have to purchase if they were on an F2P account. Time to try out the Alignment System that they'd have to purchase if they were on an F2P account. Time to try AE (with rewards and even creating arcs) that they'd only have access to on an F2P account by getting up far enough in the Reward Tiers. Time to try Incarnates if they get that high. Time that they'll be able to have no chat restrictions which they'd only have access to on an F2P account by getting far enough in the Reward Tiers.

That's a lot of things to get to try out. That might give them a better idea of what unlocks or purchases they may want to make in the market after the VIP time runs out. It might also convince them to stay VIP for a while.

I understand that, but I am pretty sure Going Rogue box includes a month VIP and a lot of other bonuses for less than $10. I was trying to figure out if there were any comparable packs available or in the works.

That's some creative thinking right there.

I wonder if you get the referral bonus on the "free" time from boxes.

I know what a month VIP includes. I was wondering if there was something with more enduring bonuses, things which last into premium time. For example, the Going Rogue box (less than 10 dollars on amazon) already includes a month of VIP in addition to a lot things which last into premium.

So get the VIP Starter Kit on sale from GameStop, apply it first since it only works on new game accounts. Then get the bundle from Amazon that Dr. Darkspeed listed. For less than $40.00 that gets 4 months of time, permanent access to the GR costumes, permanent access to the Alignment System, permanent access to creating a Praetorian, permanent access to the costumes that came with GR and whatever goodies came with the CoV Collector's Edition. 400 Paragon Points each of those months (1600 Paragon Points total) plus the Reward Tokens and Transfer Tokens each of those months. That will get them into Tier 3 so several of the chat channels are unlocked.

Since they no longer sell the Booster Packs I don't know if they still let you choose between the Cyborg and Magic Booster packs that came with the AE edition.

According to the wiki, the booster pack code should still be honoured.

Darn, thats actually awesome way to start someones CoH experience!

EDIT: And it gets better.

Add the GvE Edition to that bundle for only another $7.99. That gets you another month and The pocket D stuff and two extra costumes. So 4 months and a crepe ton of stuff for about $33. And then (if its in your budget) possibly add in an extra $10 for the Starter kit for another month.

This will not award any points. I tried this a few weeks back. I got all of the items that were included in each release, but no points which was ok because it was still cheaper than buying a VIP subscription.

Refer a friend might have worked, but I didn't think about it. Darn it.

Looking at amazon.com earlier today I see there is 4 box sets each with interesting bonuses. Dr_Darkspeed already gave link for going rogue one but instead of getting CoV collectors edition check good vs evil pack instead. It also has 3 game option (actually it is just an option that puts 3 product in your shopping cart there is no additional price discount) and it is 2$ cheaper than CoV collectors edition. You can either get all 4 of them for alot of bonus content a good amount of hero clix figures (CoV collectors comes with them) and 4 month VIP about like 33.32$ and if you are living in an area that provides free shipping it wont cost more than that.

Tokens and points awarded each month seperatly iirc so you will get 3 token and a total 1200 at the end of 3rd month (or at the beginning of 3rd month)

So, for those doing this (picking up old boxes on the cheap) -- a few things.

Quote:

quick box summary:
  • CoH box -- subtime
  • CoV box -- subtime
  • CoH collector's edition -- subtime; cape of the 4 winds, prestige power slide, and badge....
  • CoV collector's edition -- subtime; arachnos cape and symbol....
  • Architect edition -- subtime; access to the free booster pack (cyborg or magic [I generally recommend magic]).
  • Mac edition -- subtime; mission transporter power and valkyrie set.
  • Good versus Evil edition -- subtime; justice and sinister costume sets, jump pack power, and mission transporter power.
1. Add the original code BEFORE the corresponding collector's edition code (original CoH before COH collector's edition; CoV before CoV collector's edition)

2. Make sure you are buying a new/sealed box, because some people will try to sell a box with a used code

3. For people selling these over ebay, a cash payment through paypal is now put in escrow for a certain duration before you can collect it....because of #2.

Actually, you'd have to do the VIP Starter Kit first since it can only be applied on a free account. Once you apply the GR code, the CoV Collector's code, the AE box code, the GvE box code or spend any money at all you cannot apply the VIP Starter Kit code.

It does award the Points, it just doesn't front load them. I think the Paragon Points are awarded at the end of the month or on the 28th. I can't recall which date mine were awarded and it's been long enough that it's not showing on the Previous 90 days purchases listing. The Reward Token and Transfer Token awarded earlier.

I definitely think the free months do/should include points. Maybe it is an issue with when the points are delivered, as others have mentioned. Odd that they choose to give them at the end. I never noticed since i have been subbed since Freedom.
