Seems more like the experience might turn her on to 50 Shades of Grey next.

I like how the people complaining about what happened gloss over the facts.

The police were investigating a disturbance at the womans house when they learned she had a warrant issued for her not appearing in court to address the fines she owed for not returning the book/DvD's.

And the reason she never got notification of the overdue fines or warrant is because she never upated her personal information with the library. She allowed them to believe she lived at an address she hadn't lived at for many years.

ok.. handcuffed and jailed because of this! Sorry.. but that governemt is stirr crazy.

What about a court order and a high fine!?

Surely not returning a book and movie is not criminal behavior that you need handcuffs and a jail for?

She avoided the paperwork for being fined and appearing in court by letting the Library believe she lived at an old address that was years out of date. Neither the Library nor the courts had any idea that she had moved or where she had moved to. They can only send the paperwork to the address on file. This is America where it's citizens can change residences whenever they like and it's also their responsibility to keep their change of address information up to date.

Also the cops only arrested her because they were investigating a disturbance at her current residence and they learned from doing a check on her that she had an outstanding warrant for not appearing in court that was a year old.

The cops arrested her for not appearing in court. Why she had to appear in court isn't relevant. The library, the courts, and the cops did what they were supposed to.

See, I don't understand this attitude. The lady basically stole the book and DVD she borrowed. She checked it out, didn't return it, and then moved without updating her contact information. It was obvious she had no intention of returning them and/or paying the late fee. At that point, why shouldn't she be prosecuted for her theft?

Just stating that it seemed a bit overdone. But I missed she changed adresses ... so its an issue of theft. And cannot be confused with a possible forget.

I'm pretty sure it was the failure to appear in court that got the warrant issued, but that can also be blamed on her not updating her current address.

Of course there's plenty of examples of law enforcement overreacting.

If it was as simple as a forgotten book, the library probably would've accepted its return and left it at that. I work at a library, so believe me when I say that libraries would much rather have borrowed items returned than have to go through the trouble of replacing them. It makes things easier for everyone, especially in the case of DVDs and the like, since those have to be the expensive copies with public viewing rights.

I'll also add that it is a rare pleasure to deal with a patron who returns their late book and pays their fine without any whining or arm-twisting.
