VIP World Problems

While puttering around Virtue tonight, I caught a call on the LFG channel from a new player wishing for a team for her level 34 corruptor. Being the nice ambassador for the game I hope I am, I switch over to my mid-level scrapper to help out. Whoops, she's redside. OK, that's not a problem, I have, uh...

... a 50+3 night widow.

After some chatting and escorting her to the jetpack vendor she had already visited, I decided to fire up a Circle o' Thorns paper mission. We pretty much tore through it as fast as you would expect a 50+3 melee widow to tear through a paper mission, at which point she decided to call it a night. I think she had fun, but....

I'm wondering if I might've been showing off too much with powers and abilities she'd have to pay to get. Has anyone else had any experiences teaming up with just-signed-up players, and any recommendations on how to handle yourself?

She was level 34... so it's not like it was her first day

When I have teamed with freemiums I always tell them if they have any questions.to please ask. And like the person who posted before me stated...I tend to slow the killing down some and not steamroll...gives me more of a chance to chat with them etc.

Whenever I suspect I'm with a newer player (and a badge check confirms it), I'll often not explain or inquire about anything at all. I'll simply restrain myself a bit and play a more supportive role, offering to answer any questions, and doling out my attacks sparsely, and allowing the player to feel like they're contributing in a more than minor way. I've never stopped to ask myself if this was the best way to do things. I think it's quite obvious that people want their new digital creations to feel like super heroes, and every single new player I've accompanied in this manner has expressed their enjoyment of the game and a desire to team up again sometime.

I tend to play thier missions, which would of sidekicked you down.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

I was trying to show off the game to a friend who'd never played it before and had a similar problem with my lack of non-50 characters at that particular moment. After some consideration I figured it'd be better to just exemplar down and play his missions. The problem? His missions consisted of the revamped mercy island experience. I can appreciate how improved it may be in terms of making a good first impression on the average MMO player, but it was really awkward that I had to keep repeating, "Uhhh and now I guess we'll go kill ten of these... I swear this game stops looking like this really really soon!"

It is for this reason and others similar to it that has convinced me to move all my characters to a double-dipper Alignment as soon as they reach level 20.

I also stick with a more neutral alignment.

1) Alignment Merits are mostly worthless thanks to how the reward tiers work, and they still haven't made HOs available for them.
2) I have access to everything then.
3) I prefer the vigilante alignment concept. "Why let the murderers of Paragon City or the Rogue Isles keep doing so multiple times after being caught?"

That's what I do, too. I just feel like it's better to help someone new get through their own stuff than to bring them along as a side-kick on mine.

Since Freedom went live and we got a good-sized influx of new players over on Liberty, I've made a point of keeping Help turned on, talking to and playing with them. I typically do most of that on Anigan, my hero-side SJ/WP brute, because he was started around the same time as many of them and is still mid-level with a mostly-SO build. That keeps him on a more or less level playing field with his team-mates, since most of the new players he's run with are Freems or low-tier Preems. I think it's just more fun when we're all in the same boat.

I do still get questions about things like paid power sets and vet rewards... I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked how I got Ani's angelic wings, in particular... as well as the usual ones re: How Things Work. But simply having vet powers or running on a paid-for AT or with a purchased power-set alone isn't really showing off. Especially not if you're all in there together, equally up to your struggling-lowbie eyes in Vahz.

I do two things.

1) Do not play to the full extent of my abilities. This is so that they feel like they are actually helping out in the mission and thus learning/having fun at the same time.
2) Also occasionally show them some of the more flashier and impressive powers to make them want to go that extra mile in the levelling up process and possibly turn VIP.

I know that when i was showing my younger brother the game, i showed him some of the power my level 50 characters had. This was purely to show him how much you CAN improve in the game and that there is a clear sense of progression [power wise] in the game.

@Damz Find me on the global channel Union Chat. One of the best "chat channels" ingame!

I was showing the game to someone and it went like this.
"This is how high he can normally jump."
"Okay."
"This power is called Combat Jumping."
"Cool."
"This is Super Jump."
"Wow."
Then I switched to a character that could fly.

You could also just stand back and act like a Mastermind... Let your pet do the work. :P

Before getting on your hero/villain you can look at the symbol by his/her name before logging in.

I have a friend of mine whom I really can't get into the game since he likes grinding apparently. I've tried to play slower and run his missions, but he pretty much doesn't care about the story and would rather run mine since he levels up faster.

Truth. It's crazy that some MMOs don't even have jumping. Then you can go too far the other way and make a platformer mini-game to get... uhm... data-cube-boxes.
