Theme is paramount for me in relation to Lore picks.

Time/Ice Defender: Cimeroians
VEATS: Arachnos
Capt. America/Ironman Hybrid Clone: Longbow
Ill/Storm Controller: Phantoms

Theme > #'s

This is the principle reason I pick a give Lore Tree.

For my Grav/FF I went with Polar Lights to sorta be mini-Singys.
For my Elec/Nin Stalker who uses a bunch of gadgets, Robotic Drones.
For my Ice/Ice Mender of Ouroboros: Cimerorans.
For my ex-Skull Thugs/FF MM, I was not at all sure what to get, but settled on Storm Elementals to go with that Dark Theme that Bone Daddies in the Skulls have.
For my extra-dimensional cosmic horror Claws/Dark Brute I went with Rularuu for that "even more strange" aspect.

And I have no clue what to go with for my Invuln/SS Tank whose powers are mutant in nature and tied to his ability to secrete "bio-metal."

Considering your choices all rank in the top performers, I find that conclusion funny.

My illusionist indeed went with Phantoms for thematic consistency, my tanker (inspired by wonder woman and super man) has longbow for hers, my demon summoning MM will be going for the storm elementals (unless we get demons) when he unlocks lore, and my mind/psi dom has Seers for his. I try to pick what feels the most thematically appropriate.

Jem - Ill/Rad Controller Lv 50+3 Nic - Mind/Psi Dominator Lv 50+3 Lady Liberation - Invuln/SS Tanker Lv 50+1 Invicitx - Demon/Pain Mastermind Lv 50+1 Celeste - Emp/Arch Defender Lv 50+1 Nightsilver - DB/WP Scrapper Lv 34 Dusk Howl - StJ/Regen Brute Lv 32 Kyriani - Time/Energy Defender Lv 41Psifire - FF/Psi Defender Lv 50
Star Lighter - LB/LA Peacebringer Lv 30

Don't get me wrong, I don't want to insinuate anyone is full of it. It's just that, when your thematic choices also happen to be very powerful numerically, it's easy to say "theme over numbers", because here you can have your cake and eat it too.

... I may not be entirely objective due to my own themes involving Vanguard and Seers.

I can assure you that -I- only pick Lore based on theme. I snagged Polar Lights way before anyone thought they were good at anything... and I picked Cimerorans only because they fit the theme of time travel, in fact... I picked them -in spite- of the fact that they have good numbers and folks might mistake me for someone who cares about that stuff. I almost didn't pick them specifically for the fact that they -do- have good numbers.

Ugh,

You've got me there. I want to scream at you and tell you that, "No! I didn't pick them based on performace!" but truthfully, looking at that list posted earlier, I'd be hard press to dispute you.

I tend to pick on pets that either fit thematically or fill a gap in my powerset. My blaster and my defender picked the Offensive side of the lore tree, so id have some muscle to protect me while I blast or heal from the back. My Tank picked the support side of the tree, so the support pet can stay back and heal, the blaster pet can blast while I soak up damage at the front.

Rockshock (Druid Tanker), Medicat (Combat Medic), Dwarf From the North (Ice Mage), Rocket Gal (Energy Blaster), Graveborn (Undead Mastermind), Streeker (Punching Speedster), Op. Sidewinder (Recluse's pet Spider)

Mostly concept. My DP/Dev Blaster uses Robotic Drones.

My KM/WP uses Polar Lights.

I'm working on a Thugs/Storm who will use the Elementals.

You get the idea. Of course there are always a few characters where it's no clear cut what to take.

Longbow seem far more effective than Polar Lights for AoE Damage. At least that's what I've experienced on BAF.

Virtue: The-Invictus (Blue)
The Emissary of Justice - Level 50 Fire/Fire Blaster
The Emissary of Justice. - Level 50 WP/Fire Tanker
Mesmerius - Level 50 Psi/Mental Blaster
Nucleoa - Level 50 Rad/Son Defender

I pick all of my powers, Lore included, based ONLY on concept. It just so happens that the concept of every character I make is a guy who uses community-sourced testing numbers to pick the best performing options.

- Xyzor, Lightning.Rod, Kagyx - Rubber Mulch / Wholesale Candy - Freedom Server

I have Polar Lights on a few characters mainly because I dont have to look at them too much. I just go with theme outside of that.

One factor that might need to be considered in which ones are "best" though is their durability. I'm not sure how different the AI is for all of them but I had Seers originally and even though they seem way down that chart, they also seemed to die less than the lights do. I don't really watch what the pets are doing ery often, but it seems like the lights might charge at enemies more often. Or I could be totally wrong.
