Downgraded to Premium- Lost ALL My Heroes/Villains! :(

Hello and howdy! I'm sorry if this isn't the right place to post this, or if this question is just answered so often that there's a copy/paste response lurking around.

I got back into CoH lightly a couple of months ago- made my Premium account shine, used a bunch of my server slot unlocks and generally had a good time.
So it was time to up the ante! I upgraded to VIP, but after almost a month, I just felt like I needed to focus my money on more important things (bill/car payment stuff.) I let my account downgrade.

I come back in, only to find ALL of my characters locked! Even the ones I'd unlocked, or made during my Premium days! All of the unlocked slots had been shifted to empty places, allowing me to create new characters, but not access the ones I'd already made!

I put in a Help ticket, but I got a response that contacting them was... VIP-only?! What?!

I love CoH Freedom as much as anyone- being able to play all I want for free is a lot of great fun, but as it stands, I feel like my characters are being held hostage by VIP status. Is there anything that can/should be done? Or is this an actual working-as-intended feature?

every time you drop down to premium it re locks all of your characters, it however also grants you global unlock tokens based on how many slots you bought + the 2 that are default for everyone

so all you have to do is unlock the toons you want to use with the tokens that you have

Thank you very much- I had not noticed that the amount of unlocks had increased accordingly.

Contacting them using the in-game tools (Menu > Support, /petition, etc.) is VIP only.

Contacting them using out-of-game tools (emailing support@coh.com, https://support.cityofheroes.com etc) is available to all players.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Note that any slots you have already assigned to a server will never go back to being global slots, and will stay server slots

Server slots are used first when unlocking on any given server

There is a nice feature in this mechanic. I have a ton of toons. When I backslide to Premium, I have 7 total slots to play with. 6 of those I have on my 'home' server, with 1 global slot on my 'secondary' server. When I get everyone relocked, I can unlock 7 toons of my choice - I'm not stuck with the same 7 I selected last time. So I can focus on 7 different ones for awhile if I choose.

I had feared when I first read about it that I'd be locked into those original 7 toons for ever and ever, amen. I was pleased to learn otherwise.

Yes, while there's the occasional valid gripe about the way the whole Freemium model works, over all the devs have done a good job and bent over backwards to be fair to players.

Esp. on the free end. If you spend a bit (or have already spent a bit) you get a very nice play experience. 5 to 7 toons is more than some games used to give even to paying players.

I don't mean to resurrect a dead issue, but perhaps I'm just not seeing the issue through?

When I'd begun playing as Premium once again, I had roughly 12 unlock slots- I now have 5. This is because of the 7 I'd used, there are STILL slots I had unlocked on that particular server, but those slots are not being occupied by the characters that I had made in those slots originally. All of the characters are locked once more, and the unlocks I'd used on that server are now used on empty spaces.

I'm sorry if I'm not too accustomed to dealing with server/global slots- I'd just like to play with the same characters that I'd been using before I'd switched over to VIP.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding.

If you have a unlocked slot that says "create a character", and a locked slot that has a character in it, you can just double-click your locked character and it will unlock that character and lock your "create" slot

Ah, I think your worry is that the unlocks you had already used on that server are now wasted on unlocking empty slots.

Server slots that are not currently used but still permanently tied to that server are shown as unlocked but unused (empty) slots. When you unlock a character using a server slot, it decreases the amount of unlocked empty server slots.

An example, for a premium:
- I have five unlocked characters, five locked characters and three unlocked empty character slots.
- Using 5/8 server slots.

- I unlock one of the locked characters, using a server slot.
- Now I have six unlocked characters, four locked characters and two unlocked empty character slots.
- Using 6/8 server slots.

- I unlock two more of the locked characters, using server slots.
- Now I have eight unlocked characters, two locked characters and no unlocked empty character slots.
- Using 8/8 server slots.

- I buy a global unlock, then unlock one more character, spending my global unlock token to do so and permanently putting that slot on this server.
- Now I have nine unlocked characters, one locked character and no unlocked empty slots.
- Using 9/9 server slots.

- I delete one of the unlocked characters.
- Now I have eight unlocked characters, one locked character and one unlocked empty character slot.
- Using 8/9 server slots.

- I unlock the last locked character.
- Now I have nine unlocked characters and no unlocked empty slots.
- Using 9/9 server slots.
