costume edit Patron Powers

So.... I have heard that you cannot costume edit Patron Powers colors or animations. that makes sense, since I cannot seem to figure out how to do it. Here is my problem, I am running a Dark/Invul/Soul as my new main. I am okay with Dark's animations and colors, although I might edit them just for fun. But Soul Mastery's "Soul Tentacles" animation is white tentacles. First, who coded that? What causes someone to look at all the Dark themed powersets and decide "Hey, lets make Soul Tentacle's animations white! It will be neat and different!" Second, seriously, this cannot be changed?

I think I see what the theme is for the statue in Atlas Park, that guy with the one huge ball. It is a icon to represent any one particular or all the errors in aggregate of the game, and he is about to drop that one huge ball he has.

Tunnel Rat (a dev) on Pool Customization (just a quick find, and decently recent).

Soul (Ghost Widow's Patron Power Pool) isn't intended to be Darkness Mastery, it's Soul. The powers are actually (PC versions of) Ghost Widow's powers, which predates the whole Patron Power Pools. If it bothers you that much, you could always switch to Darkness Mastery (personally, I like the look of Soul, it's a nice change).

Also, that guy with the one huge ball? That would be Atlas... the one that zone is named after... and that ball? That would be the earth. (why yes, it is a very overt reference to the Greek titan Atlas). Just an fyi

Hmmm. Considering shoving all my darkness powers over to white. It looks like another "This can never be done, it takes smartsy people payed to do jobs" problem.

ps, they stole that icon from ancient Greek mythology? I thought they were all into never copying other peeps stuff?

It's been a couple thousand years, I think it's safely in the public domain by now.

Just off the top of my head... Zeus, Tartarus, Prometheus, Mot. I bet other posters could easily triple this list in 5 minutes.

Mythology has always been perfectly okay. It's using characters other people own that you can't do... because NCSoft can be sued (not just can, but Marvel did sue over the possibility of players creating their characters in CoH). i.e. Any character that's currently protected by trademark or copyright in the US or other countries NCSoft operates in (primarily trademark).

Right, it is a legal point involving corporate cash rather than an ethical or creative choice. How appropriate in that case that they should steal from the founders of Western analytical and ethical thought. Carry on.

No, it's a, "This is a Legacy thing that was never meant to be modified with coloration, so we have to reverse engineer it without breaking the game, and have little to no documentation, so it's just months and months of trial and error until we stumble upon the right combination of things.".

Take [Dark Melee: Midnight Grasp] Apply to (Target). Midnight Grasp can be colored. It is the exact same effect. Leave EVERYTHING else alone, just change the effect applied by [Soul Mastery: Soul Tentacles] No Trial, No error, No time, No hassle. Start coding, take a day to test it. Seriously.

It's bad enough they were saying for months Pets each use as much comp power as a Player, then when they were replying to "Why can't we modify pets costumes?" they own up to the fact pets are written to be low resolution cheap comp power effects. The story always changes, but the underlying fact is this: "Suck it up, that's the way it is, and we'll change it if somebody feels like it, maybe."

This is related closely to why so much of the game has misspellings, typos, and grammar that would embarrass a 5th grader. It's easier to just leave it the way Joe typed it Monday morning while recovering from a hangover.

So... do you think every Greek story involving Zeus was "written" (spoken) by a single guy? Tarterus? Atlas? Prometheus? (Mot isn't Greek, but same idea) What Cryptic/Paragon/NCSoft has done, if anything, is actually honoring the Greek traditions of story telling. For you to say what you've said in this thread makes you look very ignorant of both Greek mythology/culture, as well as modern Western culture.

To call any of that "stealing"... wow... I hope you never run across any of Marvel's "Thor" comics and realize their incredibly obvious inspiration for the character.

Hint: They basically lifted all of Norse mythology

Cool story.

Sorry, but wrong. Soul Mastery having white effects is not a problem and it will not be changed. It's like that for a reason. The effects come from Ghost Widow's powers. And you can't change it because it's not YOUR power. It's a PATRON power. You have been granted the power by Ghost Widow.

Yes, this is another point that was not raised earlier. Although the devs may at some point give us Power Pool/Ancillary Pool customization, we've been told in the past that Patron Pool customization won't happen because those powers are linked to the story you obtain them from. It's entirely possible they could change their minds on that but I doubt it.

Server computation resources are a different thing than your computer's local video computation resources.

Also, if fixing this were as easy as you seem to think, they would have done it when they added customization to a bazillion other sets at the same time, or soon thereafter. It should not be a surprise that the feature that was requested for years, and long denied because it was ridiculously difficult and time-consuming, is in fact ridiculously difficult and time-consuming.

cannot decide if I like DarkGob or xzero45's response better. Also, many typed responses articulated well. Okay, I'm still irritated though. I want a theme, don't they freaking get that.

Edit, it's Seinfeld for the win. And that from someone who watched all of 1/2 of 1 of any of the TV shows. It was a very perfect cut/paste job DarkGob, thanks for taking the time to show you cared. :-)

The entire conversation that lead up to this made me laugh.

Nothing against you, OP, but I'd quit while you're ahead.

More on the original topic, no, I don't believe Patron Powers should be customizable. They're not our character's own powers the way Epic Power Pools are, they're taken directly from the patrons.

They're doing it just to spite you. Every time the devs work on a new feature, they ask themselves, "Would Blue_Centurion want this?" If so, they do not do it.

You should whip up a fresh batch of code and send it to them to show them how easy it is. Maybe then they'll understand. It shouldn't take too long, maybe just like a day or two to write it, take a couple hours to make sure it works. Coding is pretty simply after all.

Now you're just getting intentionally sarcastic...
