A necessary Nerf to improve CoH!

Throughout the history of City of Heroes there have been times where content is too hard a nerf is required to make that content playable. The Terra Volta Respec trial, Keyes Trial, and the Positron Task Force are a few examples of this.

It is wonderful that the Devs have worked hard to tweak the difficulty of this game, but sadly they have continued to miss the most difficult of in game content. I write this post to stress the importance of finally having this massive oversight fixed as quickly as possible.

The issue at hand is that reading needs to be nerfed. It is far far too hard! Please nerf reading so the game can be enjoyable!

Also, happy April foolÂ’s day!

You jest, but there are people who would seriously prefer text to be replaced with (ugh) voice acting.

It depends on the quality of the voice acting. The "voice acting" in other MMOs has been pretty horrible (you click NPC and get "<generic common voice greeting>"). In one particular MMO that's themed after a long running series of scifi TV shows/movies, you'd get some contacts that'd read their mission text... except it wouldn't be ones that were main characters or anything, it would be some random side character that you'll never see again. Now that's a "wtf?"!

Voice acting of a similar quality to that of the newest games like Skyrim (I always have subtitles on as well) would be nice, especially for that mid-mission text that just flashes on your screen, or during the cut scenes. But, at this point, that's really not a reasonable thing to do. Having only new content with voices would be a bit weird... especially when they bring in an older character that we've already developed our own voices in our heads... it would be jarring!

the issue is people not reading chat.
when the league leader says "do not click glowies" there are people who do not understand what that means. Also "Do not attack AM" fails with a lot of people.
Or use your acid and nade temp powers, and people don't know what that means either.. so yeah, reading is hard, and should get nerfed!

Yes, I'm certainly not suggesting that voice acting in video games is always bad all the time, but MMOs don't really tend to have the budget for non-terrible voice acting. Some of the voice acting in the game you described actually isn't too terrible (the recent cut scenes were neat to watch, even if it was jarring for your character to have unspoken text-only dialogue in the same scene), but then some of it is just bad, and it's not really consistent when you encounter it.

Then you have City of Heroes, which is a first-tier superhero MMO (not that that's hard to do), but certainly not a first-tier MMO. Paragon Studios can't even justify localization expenses anymore, they're not gonna splurge for voice actors, and no offense to the devs, but I don't particularly want to hear them trying to voice their own characters.

i have a friend who is dyslexic and has trouble reading, it would be cool to have a read feature for certain people, it would just be a robotic voice like in the old read feature in Microsoft word back in the mid 90s, but i dont really care about what the NPCs say i just want to whack random citizens

The path of Villainy is an arduous one, but one that must be tread because without it there would be no heroes, and what would the world be like without either. So for all those heroes out there I chose Villainy.

Oh, wait...you're talking about something else...aren't you
Movies (direct-to-dvd don't count, even if they were better)

But yes, yes I was. From the little bit I played, the continuity makes absolutely zero sense. Massively botched time-travel-changing-the-time-line result game? (even though I enjoyed the movie, it made no sense as well... the events of TNG/etc could have never possibly happened, unless you're going to claim that THAT timeline that they came from was also the result of people meddling with the past to destroy the sun or whatever the hell it was)

Quite frankly, I'd totally go for a Stargate MMO (or a Starcraft MMO...), it would seem like it would be well suited for an MMO universe of interconnected worlds. You've got a variety of races and factions, and you've got a good first expansion already lined up (go to Pegasus!). Oh well, they would have probably completely botched it anyways.

Yeah, it's too bad Stargate Worlds went belly up. I was really looking orward to it while it was still in development.

I used to be a voice actor, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

Some voice over is nice, but EVERYTHING being in voice over is just plain annoying after a while.

Although I'm certainly no fan of that movie, you're misunderstanding what happened. Nero's time travel created a new timeline, the timeline he came from still exists, which is sort-of consistent with Star Trek temporal mechanics (see: Parallels).

*shrugs*

I liked the voice acting/cutscenes in that Far, far away galaxy MMO. To me, it was a bit more "immersive".

However, I can see it getting old fast in an MMO setting (alt-itis would be worse there cause you couldn't just click through everything you already know...you have to continually watch the movie(s).
