    Where to now?

I have to say that I, along with most everyone reading this I suspect, am completely bummed out by the death of CoH. After paying and playing for 8+ years, I am going to be lost without this game, and more importantly, the Guardian family to play with.

So my question is, where to next? What MMO out there do you feel will capture your loyalty? I have zero interest in PvP, and from my searching, the majority of games out there are focused on that instead of PvE.

I played Champions Online, before it went ftp, and got 2 characters to lvl 40, but it never really felt right as the game was more solo-oriented. I did love the character creation tool they had, and a lot of the gameplay style was great, but I don't think I will be going back to it.

I also played DCU Online during beta, and while a lot of it was cool, I was very unhappy with the inability to remap movement keys. Dunno what it's like live, but after playing CoH for all these years, I'm pretty set for what keys I like to use, and if I can't remap another game to be as close as possible for movement control, it's gonna be a very tough sell for me.

I played Reckoning: Kingdoms of Amalur from its launch to its demise. Loved that game. Oh well.

I've signed up for Marvel Heroes beta, and WildStar beta - but in the meantime, any recommendations from the Guardian community would be greatly appreciated.

    Stay safe Guardian.

Agreed. "The Unstoppable Juggernaut" is definitely a ss/invuln brute.
  9. Ooops, forgot to say I think Hulk is a SS/WP brute as well. May have been a little hesitant on the brute part before they could be heroes though.
  10. Heya Brutes, would love to have you weigh in on a thread I posted here about whether or not the Hulk is a WP or Invuln brute or tank.
  11. So I recently had a conversation/argument/debate with a friend on whether or not the Hulk was a tank or a brute, and what his defensive power set was. Obviously we both readily agreed that the Hulk's offensive set would be Super Strength, but we had trouble agreeing on whether or not the Hulk's defensive set would be Willpower or Invulnerability, and then whether or not he was a tank or a brute. In the end we agreed to disagree and that there may not really be a correct answer LOL but I thought it might be fun to hear other players weigh in on this.

Here a few of the points that came up in our conversation:

    Willpower:

High Pain Tolerance - check, makes sense for the big green machine.
Mind Over Body - for the Hulk? Body Over Mind maybe Of course, could also depend on which "Hulk" we're talking about, since the "smart Hulk" version might qualify.
Fast Healing - check, Hulk has super regen.
    Indomitable Will - ummm, CHECK!
Rise To The Challenge - "The more the odds are against you, the more determined you become...your resolve and the look in your eye is enough to leave most foes shaken." LOL check
Quick Recovery - super stamina, check - the Hulk gets stronger as he gets angrier, and can stay pi$$ed off for days! LOL
Heightened Senses - check - "You become more aware of your environment and its hazards...This will increase your Defense versus environmental damage...also allow you to perceive stealthy foes" Compare that to what Marvel's WIKI says on the Hulk: "The Hulk is capable to adapt to inhospitable environments whenever it is necessary...after the Hulk adapts to a hostile environment (like space) he no longer needs sustenance and does not need air, water, food, or sleep." and "The Hulk has the unique ability of being able to see "astral forms"--or ghosts."
Resurgence - "Should you fall in battle, you can Revive yourself from the brink of death." - This was a big argument...Hulk fall in battle? OK, has happened, RARELY. LOL
Strength of Will - check - "extremely resistant to most damage...when it wears off you are left exhausted." Sounds like the Hulk post-battle/pre-transformation back into Bruce Banner.

    Invulnerability:

Resist Physical Damage - check, except for "You are naturally tough..." is there anything natural about the Hulk really?
Temp Invulnerability - check, since the Hulk is only temporarily the Hulk and will transform back in Bruce Banner.
Dull Pain - hurt the Hulk and he just gets angrier and stronger? yup, dull pain check!
Resist Elements - check - from Marvel WIKI, "The Hulk is capable of withstanding...pressures extremes, ...maximized heat without blistering, maximized cold without freezing, ...has withstood the impact of a ground zero nuclear explosion and also the Human Torch's Nova Blast, with a temperature of one million degrees Fahrenheit, without any injury."
Unyielding - check, again from Marvel WIKI, "The Hulk was able to withstand a planet-shattering impact at point blank range, and a mighty blast from Galactus...and also to overcome the Onslaught's enormous strength by neutralizing an immobilization."
Resist Energies - check, from WIKI, "For all intents and purposes the Hulk is immortal. Because of his healing factor that regenerates his cells, and the gamma energy and the dark magic he has absorbed that empowers him...overpowering a field of energy with sufficient power to change the orbit of a planet."
Invincibility - "This power is most effective when fighting multiple opponents." LOL, CHECK!!!
Tough Hide - ummm, check! "The Hulk's skin is impervious to conventional blades,...is capable of withstanding high caliber bullets...falls from orbital heights." Yeah, those three make for a tough hide. LOL
Unstoppable - "when it wears off you are left exhausted, and drained of almost all Health and Endurance." Again, sounds like the Hulk post-battle/pre-transformation back into Bruce Banner, except for the drained of Health part, which is kind of a critical point.

    ************

    Tanker:
"The Tanker can take it and dish it out all at once. The Tanker primarily can absorb vast amounts of damage, and hold his own in a fist fight. But the Tanker lacks any long range punch. The Tanker would prefer just to charge straight ahead anyway."

LOL love that last line! The Hulk would prefer just to charge straight ahead anyway.

    Brute:
"Brutes live to fight, and as a Brute you revel in hand-to-hand combat. With strong offensive power sets to inflict pain and impressive defenses to take it, you're the best there is in a straight fight. Protracted battles only makes you mad, and the madder you get, the more damaging your attacks become. You do lack ranged attacks, which could leave you vulnerable to hit and run tactics without some allies to cover you."

OK, go ahead and insert "the Hulk" for "Brute" and then reread this description. LOL "some allies" aka The Avengers?

    *******************

OK, there we have it...WP or Invuln, Tanker or Brute? What do you think?

    1 Tanker only

It's simple math really... 1 tank = last man standing, 2+ tanks = last men standing (or women ) *note* by no means am I saying that the tank is supposed to be the last man standing. By rights, the tank should be the one who takes all the dmg and therefore potentially dies first, BUT, the reality is that when fighting over the aggro cap, as a tank you cannot be held responsible for other player's deaths when they are outside the area of your control/influence.

In general, is there any other AT besides Tankers that run solo with their diff settings at +4x8? I know some brute builds probably do, the odd scrapper, and maybe uber controllers (fire/earth/kin, illusion/storm, etc). I know with incarnate stuff, a lot of different AT's are phenomenal now for solo survivability, which hurts the necessity for tanks a little bit, but IN GENERAL, tanks do what we do - take the hard knocks, and dish it back, albeit more slowly than others, but ultimately, we're there to help protect the rest of the team.

Most players in-game know me for my tanks, but I do have scrappers, a brute, a troll, and an MM that I can easily switch to if it will benefit the team dynamic to do so, and I will usually offer that if I see 2 or more tanks already on the team. If there is only one other tank on team already, I ain't switchin' - especially for TF's and such, 2 tanks increase team survivability because, in my experience, we're always fighting over the aggro cap.

PS - Since uber controllers, crabs, corruptors, scrappers and the like can solo AV's now, why the heck can't tanks? If those "slighter" built AT's can survive and triumph, then I think Tanks deserve an immediate increase adjustment to their dps/dmg scaling. It makes no sense to me that someone can solo, for example, the ITF - and I can too on my tank, until Romy - just can't do enough dps to take him down. This screams to me "misbalance!"

I ended up tweaking your build a little bit, and I'm very happy with the results. As a test (which is what I do generally to gauge tank survivability) I went to Cimerora to take on the soldiers that guard the wall.

Other than having to eat a couple yellows to be able to hit them, I had no trouble whatsoever tanking a mob of lvl 52s (+5 to me).

Again, thank you so very much Gobbledygook!

PS - here`s my upcoming new costume for when he hits 50...I call it Cybretooth.

  16. So I just hit lvl 47 with my SR/SJ tanker, and I have to say that I have no idea how he will ever survive what I can do on my electric or shield or wp tanks.
*shaking head* He's just so damned squishy, it's frustrating as hell. Does not feel like a tank to me at all.
Here's his build, if ANYONE has any ideas/input/suggestions (that are affordable) to help save him from the "retired due to lack of survivability" pile, I would greatly appreciate it.

  19. Thanks for your info - I'll have a look when I can. I agree with you entirely, hence trying to get a solid general build with the best numbers possible. Could definitely spend hours looking at attack chaining, etc to see how best accommodates, dunno if I can afford to invest that much time LOL but really appreciate all your thoughts and input on this. You have a lot of valid points re: fire tanker best defense is a strong offense - it's been many years since I've played a fire tank so I had forgotten much of this.

Build 1 was just a quicky throw together based on powers I would take and slotted with quick sets, just to get the ball rolling. Did not spend a lot of time on it, and new it needed a lot of tweaking to improve shoddy defensive numbers.

Yes, I agree - I really was hoping to get as many other Tanks involved in this as possible. Maybe it will take a bit more time to hook them!?

This is obviously an experiment in Tanker community interest. Hopefully, they'll rise to the challenge,
