Crab Spider build challenge - with prize!

Hi all,

I have been having a discussion about Crab Spiders and have set myself some build goals, but I can't reach them all for the life of me.

That may be because it is impossible, but that isn't stopping me trying, and hopefully won't stop some of you.

The details are below, but I will give whoever manages to reach the goals either a full Hecatomb set, full Apocalypse set, full Armageddon set, or 500 million inf (Whichever they prefer) as a way of saying thank you

I will keep the competition open until Sat 7th April.


Must have:

  • Perma-Hasten
  • Perma-Serum
  • All 3 pets perma
  • 45% defence to all positions (Can include Barrier*)
  • Both pet resist uniques and both pet defence uniques
  • General good slotting for everything aside from Shatter Armor, which is just a filler power so can be swapped if necessary, or used as a mule
  • 95% chance to hit +3's with all powers including Web Envelope (Which will accept minimal slotting as it is just for the -fly)
  • Achilles' Heel procs in Single Shot, Burst and Heavy Burst
  • Catalysed ATIO proc in Heavy Burst (The other parts of the set can be elsewhere but with also needing an Achilles' Heel proc it is most likely best to use 5 parts here)
  • Muscalature Alpha (This is what makes the build really hard)
  • Gapless single target attack chain of Bayonet>Single Shot>Burst>Single Shot
  • 'Decent' endurance, so no neglecting stamina
  • Mag 4 KB protection

Nice to have:
  • 3% resist unique
  • Endurance sustainable single target attack chain*
  • Soulbound Allegiance proc in Summon Spiderlings
  • Mag 12 KB protection

There are no restrictions on what IO's can be used, so go crazy, but I am not willing to use enhancement boosters on purples, PvP IO's or special IO's like LoTG's, and I would probably cap their use to something like 30-40 across the whole build.

I don't want temp powers or inspirations counted either

The build template is below, though you can move the power order if that helps. You can also swap Wolf Spider Armor for any power of your choice, with Combat Training: Defensive and Stealth being the likely candidates.

Edit: I am also willing to lose Omega Maneuver if necessary and still award the prize(s), but any build that keeps all the powers (Wolf Spider Armor aside) will win over any that misses Omega Maneuver.

Also can we swap powers out for other ones? You dont have space for 5 LoTG +rech and you are missing out on easy def from other sources

You can swap Shatter Armor for whatever else you want in the Patron Pool, but that is the only power I am not set on. I have updated the original post to say that.

The set powers and wanting Muscalature are what is making this so hard for me, my original build had tough/weave instead of patrons and was much easier lol.

What do you think about swapping Combat Jumping for Hover, and then setting the target for melee defence at 32.5%?

I don't really want to set it any lower because I still want to be able to use Bayonet without it getting me killed.

The next choice is probably to drop Bayonet as well, and I guess that would become a free power choice, though I would prefer Vengeance.

Edit: Actually I would be torn between dropping Bayonet or Omega Maneuver, both are great powers and in general AoE>ST but Bayonet would let me do some really nice things ...

Is this for a already in use toon? Is this for a toon that already has Lore and Destiny at t3? Or is that not to be a factor?

Yea your power choices are too restrictive but the important goals are attainable and I think the general functionality you're looking for can be had, but it's pretty hard to work on something like this in Mids with exact power choices laid out like this.

I just focused on the important stuff. I think I pretty much got everything though... I just had to fix some of your power choices. I hope you're not going to begrudge me the less than 1% melee defense, hah.

This is for a toon that is currently level 50 and I haven't even unlocked the Alpha Slot yet, though I have the IO's or inf saved up.

I am assuming people will be choosing Barrier for Destiny, so the defence goal lowers to 40%. It would also mean my pets have ~35% defence on top of whatever they may have naturally

I wouldn't begrudge the melee defence (It could be made up with boosters I would think), but losing Frag Grenade (I would just swap that for Omega maneuver though as they take the same sets) and both Assault powers is a no-no for me, especially the Assault powers which would be boosting myself and 6 pets so would be a big loss*.

I have alternate builds planned where I have to sacrifice powers to meet my goals, but sticking with the planned powers would create the most awsome toon imho, and I am gutted that is it looking impossible

Normally I try and set high goals and manage to reach them with a little wiggle room, but I have never been so locked into a set of powers as I am this time.

I will keep this going on the off chance someone manages it, but it is hardly the end of the world if I have to fallback on any of my other builds.

*Losing both Assault Powers probably loses me more damage than if I switched from Muscalature to Agility, which is what my alternate builds have done.

I made some changes and now I have a version that I'm pretty sure meets all of your criteria, plus the bonus and the "nice to have." Again some power choices are different from your template but 90% is the same and the important stuff is all there. One of the assault powers is back, Frag Grenade was easily removable in my book because it does KB but ymmv

And here's how I'd get the second assault back


I just realized I must have made some dumb decision that I can't pinpoint at the moment because the pets aren't perma anymore. Maybe I've been staring at my computer for too long.

That is very similar to one of my alternate builds, though straight from that I can +5 the IO's in Hasten, and drop the Kinetic Combats for 1 Touch of Death set without losing defence, and free up 2 slots so there is wiggle room there.

Good call with the Touch of deaths, I think I had it in the build at one point. Doing that and swapping the defense generics in the maneuver powahs, you would have a 2:1 recovery/usage ratio so you'd be fine. One of those 2 slots could be used for a Numina unique in health to guarantee no endurance issues, plus this build softcaps positions without Barrier (+2 boosters in defense toggles make up the half a percentage, not that it matters) so you have the option of Ageless +recovery or DDR depending on which you want more.

Making those tweaks, plus you said you had +5 boost in your recharge IO's in hasten so that saves a slot, we end up with a Numina unique in health and the Shield Wall 3% back in the build. What else is missing from your criteria, aside from Omega Bomb, and is that a sacrifice you're not willing to make?

I have now updated the first post, because people have made me realise that Wolf Spider Armor is an easily replacable power, and if swapped with Combat Training: Defensive it might make the build considerable easier.

Reason for not taking Frag: They have the potential to scatter the mob, this will interfere with the pets.
Reason for not taking huntsman powers but Crab powers: Crab powers are more potent and do more damage.
Reason i have no melee but only ranged attacks: Draw the foes out, ranged attacks for self, when foe gets close, pets will do the melee damage. With 6 pets from power pools and 2 from lore, you'll be deadly.
Reason i have so many team buffs: Pets take the buffs too.

PS: This is actually an old build i never got a chance to make for my own Crab. Working on a few new toons takes away resources for this build.

Bah, my last revision meets all of your criteria except having Omega Bomb, which could be swapped with Frag Grenade as I had it originally (and the last poster also mentioned that the KB is bad.) I even softcapped all positions without Barrier. I'm pretty sure I won already.

As for the goals:

Must have:
  • Perma-Hasten close enough to 'wiggle'
  • Perma-Serum tick
  • All 3 pets perma tick
  • 45% defence to all positions (Can include Barrier*) tick
  • Both pet resist uniques and both pet defence uniques tick
  • General good slotting for everything aside from Shatter Armor, which is just a filler power so can be swapped if necessary, or used as a mule could do with more endrdx on Heavy Burst so 98% there
  • 95% chance to hit +3's with all powers including Web Envelope (Which will accept minimal slotting as it is just for the -fly) tick
  • Achilles' Heel procs in Single Shot, Burst and Heavy Burst tick
  • Catalysed ATIO proc in Heavy Burst (The other parts of the set can be elsewhere but with also needing an Achilles' Heel proc it is most likely best to use 5 parts here) tick
  • Muscalature Alpha (This is what makes the build really hard) tick
  • Gapless single target attack chain of Bayonet>Single Shot>Burst>Single Shot tick or close enough
  • 'Decent' endurance, so no neglecting stamina not sure to be honest

Nice to have:
  • 3% resist unique tick
  • Endurance sustainable single target attack chain* never gonna happen lol
  • Soulbound Allegiance proc in Summon Spiderlings no

Overall this is very good!

I think if we aim for 40% defence (IE: Stick with Barrier which is appealing to me more than it used to because I realised that also helps the pets) that gives us the chance to drop Hover (I would pick up Vengeance to keep the LoTG) and use the 2 slots in Stamina (I don't really feel comfortable without at least 2eps net recovery).

A slot can be free'd from Combat Jumping, which can either take the 3% res IO or be used to help the endurance on Heavy Burst.

Overall you are a lot closer than I maybe expected to get, and there still seems to be a bit of wiggle room. Particularly frankenslotting Burst and Heavy Burst was something I never tried so you have used less slots than me there.

So basically I am forgiving the loss of Omega Maneuver (Though I am at pains to do so strangely, despite not having it in my current build) but I am not totally happy yet.

You last build is so close and I think there is enough wiggle room that I will look when I leave work tonight and if that is what I base my final build on I will count you as the winner.

I am not 100% sold yet though, for reasons I can't quite explain (Maybe the slotting in Heavy Burst, not sure..), but you are in the lead.

I should also mention that I know the KB in Frag Grenade is annoying, but the choice is either that or Supression, which has a longer animation and uses more endurance. I am considering Supression, but they take the same sets anyway so it makes no odds.

You already have a 2:1 recovery ratio which will mean you're fine 95% of the time. Since the build doesn't need Barrier like I mentioned earlier, you can take Ageless +recovery to completely guarantee no endurance issues. This also means no need for end slotting in HB.

Edit: As for HB's slotting, you will be able to replace the Dam/Rech IO with a regular damage IO without gimping your attack chain and to boost the values to above average. A perfectly great slotting if I do say so myself.

I'm showing 3.65 end/sec recovery on the last revision, before we even consider Ageless. The 3% res IO is back in as of my last revision. Yes, I'm posting fast. I like to win at things and I'm pretty sure I did just now.

If you are forgiving the loss of Omega Maneuver, I've already addressed the other issues. Ageless means that your end issues are moot and I win the "softcapped without Barrier" prize too. I will play around for a little bit more and try to get the SBA proc into Spiderlings, even though that was not under "required."

I know I've been rapidfire posting, so once again here is the revision to which I am referring. Turn accolades on, you'll need to collect the passives but any character worth their salt gets those anyways.

Yeah this is annoying me too, I am considering swapping for Supression (As I mentioned above) but not sure yet, and they take the same slotting anyway.
