Computer is crashing with gfx card driver errors constantly. (nvidia)

[EDIT: just wanted to put this here first. I ended up not being able to fix the problems I was having with this card. I bought a new card, GTX 550 Ti, for $130 and everything seems to be running fine now. I still have no idea what exactly caused the problem my other card was having.]

Don't worry, I followed the guide and I have my helper and hijack logs ready.

I've seen this issue posted before but never with an actual solution found. I get constant errors with my graphics card, GTX 275, and I'm always seeing error messages related to windows timeout. I've tried editing the registry like a couple other posts have said to try but a longer timeout delay just means that I look at a frozen game for longer before it crashes.

I've done the new driver thing, thoroughly too; download new drivers, uninstall current ones, restart in safe mode, run the cleaner, install new drivers, restart normally. I still have the issue after all that. I've tried using every version of the Nvidia drivers that I could find online. None of them fix this, even the very brand new ones.

I've played with my settings as well. I've run CoH with everything maxed out and with everything turned as far down as possible. It didn't help.

here are my logs.

Um, just a brief glance and I noticed your Swap File.

You have 6Gb (6144Mb) of physical ram and yet your swap file is set to a little over half that (3387Mb). Windows probably even suggests it, but you should change the Min/Max swap file setting to something closer to 9Gb (9216Mb) or you risk running into memory related errors.

If it's Windows-managed it doesn't matter. It'll simply expand the paging file to meet the needs of the system.

Hard-setting the paging file to 1.5x physical memory is a hold-over from the old days and does little more than waste gigs of disk space.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Oh man I hate this one. That opengl timeout error is one that seems to crop up randomly for some users in opengl games and not for others. There seems to be no rhyme or reason. Some manage to fix the problem by changing to much older drivers (266.58). Others by changing task handling from the GPU to auto. But what works for one person often doesn't work for another.

Brink which also uses opengl has lost a lot of users because the problem is much more common when playing there.

One thing that springs to mind is you might want to try removing the babylon toolbar and see if that fixes anything. I don't have any idea if that actually causes any conflicts but somebody else who was recently having graphics problems also had the babylon toolbar installed.

Don't count your weasels before they pop dink!

True, but hard coding it saves some effort on the part of the system as well as limits fragmentation related issues right?

Windows will generally keep a pretty good sized page file... you generally won't have to have Windows increase the size unless something Bad (tm) is going on (if you're 8 GB into swap, you're likely in trouble already!).

I run a similar system, but with a GTX460, and while I didn't have this issue with COH, I did have a similar one with with World of Tanks, and LOTR. There doesn't seem to be any one good fix that applies to all.

Nvidia HD audio drivers, cheap memory, Adobe flash, and full moons, etc., have all been accused as culprits. I fixed mine by down clocking my memory and setting the nvidia global settings, to "prefer maximum performance". I also disabled Hardware Acceleration for "flash", as there were documented problems with it, and the newer drivers.

With the 295.73 drivers, I've been able to upclock my memory to normal settings again, but have left the other changes in place and still getting good results/no crashes. You might want to try some of these and see if you get any results.

I haven't tried the latest driver your running, and I think there is a just released driver, newer than yours, out now. I head over to guru3d.com for driver update information. I think the last best driver for most were the 275.33 or older, as nvidia changed something in how TDR is managed after that driver.

There are more suggestions on the 107 page long thread on nvidia's forum at, http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=187401

I would certainly turn off, ambient occlusion, as that will tax your fps pretty hard on that card and can't be helping the issue, and change the nvidia performance global setting. Also make sure your card isn't getting to hot. If your still getting a crash, try downclocking your memory if your able.

Okay, I've been futzing with everything and what with a new driver out today, I'd thought I'd update my drivers and this thread.

I checked out that thread from Terrashock. It's mostly for the 400 series but they had some interesting ideas. I'll be honest, I'm not exactly excited about some of the options they had there, which basically all dealt with the cards BIOS.

You guys have any thoughts on doing that?

Things that have been done that didn't do jack.

  • removing that babylon toolbar. (thanks for the suggestion, I didn't remember even installing that. it's wasting space regardless)
  • turn settings to minimum
  • running windowed vs fullscreen
  • changing the Windows time out limit. All this did was make me wait longer when me screen froze before the game crashed.
  • changing the drivers to literally any available version. None fixed it.

Why are there so many Google Chrome processes open?
That's probably not good. Maybe you also have your browser set to "use hardware acceleration" which will make it take up some of your graphics card load when there are graphics on a website. You can disable that and it may help.

Edit:

Page File: 3257MB (3387MB currently in use)
Why does the "in use" portion read as higher than the, I'm assuming, available portion?
Is that how ti is supposed to be?

Well, S_F I would see if you have any friend who can spare you a video card for testing. It can even be ATI.

If the game still crashes, we can eliminate the video card as the problem.

/facepalm

Every tab in Chrome is sandboxed in it's own process. This way if one tab dies/locks up/goes on walkabout, it doesn't affect your other tabs unlike Firefox or IE. You can simply close the non-responding tab and everything is great. The downside is if you open a lot of tabs, you will end up using a lot of memory. See Tom's Hardware's semi-frequent performance comparisons of browsers to see what I'm talking about.

I just moved so there's no one to borrow from. I think I'll take a trip to Best Buy later tonight and make liberal use of their 30 day return policy.

Just wanted to update this.

I ended up not buying another card. I got so frustrated with the game that I pretty much haven't played in since I last posted. Instead, I've been playing other games alot. And in the dozens of hours played, I've had maybe 2-3 crashes over two months.

I picked up CoH again because of the new issue. Just tonight, in the last 15 minutes, I've had 5 crashes and can not get through a single mission.

I understand not every card will be perfect, blah blah blah, but the problem here just really seems to be the game.

The game is unplayable and frankly, I don't know why I should spend money on a new card for one game when there are literally a dozen games that I could be playing that actually work.

Reviewing your information...

You were probably overheating.
I have a Nvidia GTX 465 and I overheat if I have my settings for reflections and shadows and occlusion as high as you do. I just outright turn those off and never run occlusion with shadows if I run any of it.

You should monitor your temperature(keep it below 70C, over 80C is begging for a crash) and get this program from Nvidia to manually set your graphics card fan speed higher: http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_...ools_6.06.html
That will keep your card cooler so you don't have video driver crashes, but your card probably isn't good enough to run the game that maxed out. City of Heroes doesn't run as good as it should with powerful hardware. We just have to accept it and turn down the settings.

Edit:
Also, how good is your internet. CoH tends to "lay a brick" when internet connections lose packets, at least sometimes. I know because my internet is not the greatest such that I sometimes crash while teaming, especially in AE missions. Comcast is an internet provider to avoid for gaming as well.

I've played with my settings in the past. Nothing gets rid of the crashes.

I'll try the monitoring program though.

My internet is verizon and generally pretty good.

Good point, I should mention that i never leave Boinc running while playing. It's a huge resource hog.

Agreed, I only have this on my old Mac at this point as by default it'll pull any system to its knees almost as fast as City does some days. ;-)

This keeps bugging me...are you talking about one of those little wireless boxes that gives you internet or something more like cable/dsl? I'm always iffy on the reliability of such things for gaming, especially if you live in an area with other data hogs.

I have Verizon Fios. They give you a modem/router and it currently is sitting under my desk, next to my tower. My computer is plugged directly into it.

Also, I have the 25/25 Mbps plan but often get a better download speed than that. For example. I just did this

Also, and you'll get a kick out of this, CoH just crashed on me again, before I could log in.

have you tried running a drive sweeper to make sure the old driver is gone and ccleaner?? this might sound crazy but have you tried making a new user account in windows and in ms config turn everything off other then anti virus and see if coh crashes. if it not a hardware error you may have to do a nuke and pave to fix the issue.

Well, if a video card swap is too much trouble, how about a hard drive swap?

Buy a new HD, keep your old one handy....Install windows (don't activate it) and install CoH. Do you still get errors?

Try that.

I see you on Triumph Watch once in awhile, so you getting on with a different rig?

sorry, I thought I had put that in a previous post.

Every time i update the driver, I uninstall the drivers, restart in safe mode, run the cleaner, and then install the new drivers.
