Nice gag from Black Pebble....

But...and it really rankles me to say it yet again as I've posted it before...but 'just because' is the sort of story rationale I expect from a child, not an adult writer of a supposedly adult story. It's insulting to my intelligence as a reader, to theirs for throwing down a story that not only gets criticised for its own internal logic but then contradicts itself with an event bringing back another dead, person.

It's really just putting blinkers on when you accept a story even when you know it doesn't work; I can't imagine that scenario being enjoyable, let alone tolerable. It's like my lifelong love of Star Wars and being exposed to The Phantom Menace. I've become okay with accepting, at least for me, that it's a bad film and that it's okay to say that. It doesn't invalidate my liking of the other films, or my disliking, in fact.

What it does mean is that I can put my fandom to one side and take something on its merits. And I'm doing that with the story here and not being an apologist for it. For me, it's a bad story and one that I don't agree with for reasons I've detailed elsewhere. I don't want company policy passed off as story to me and then have no internal rationale to back it up other than 'because'.

We wouldn't wear this in a movie, a book or even a cartoon. I think it's only fair that if we see bad writing, we call it out if that's what we believe it to be.

The whole setup annoyed me. My main is a Magic origin empath that has been pushed to be about as powerful as he can currently be made. So, who's in that room when the flunky shows up to interfere?

1) A bloody archmage with angelic blood who specializes in healing.
2) One of the world's most powerful psychics.
3) A rich guy with a bow.

Why would the psychic and the healing mage run out to deal with the flunky, while leaving the guy with no magical or psychic powers to supervise a dangerous magical healing ritual on a psychic? In fact, it doesn't even matter what character I was on. I could have been playing a Natural tanker--it still wouldn't make sense for Penny to leave.

I was okay with not being able to rez Statesman, despite being right there and swatting Wade aside like the bug he is. They explained why in-game, and it was acceptable enough, especially given that neither I nor my character have ever much liked the guy.

Psyche, though? No explanation. Just dead with an arrow through her...a wound that might not even kill a regular human that quickly, depending on exactly where it hit. By game mechanics, she should have been back on her feet the moment I got back to the chamber--assuming neither the mediport system nor Manticore managed to do something first. There are plenty of workable handwaves, some already mentioned here--her soul/psyche was distributed among everyone she was in contact with, she's mindriding someone in particular, the ritual itself sheared her soul from her body when it was disrupted, and so on.

The next arc had better give a damn good reason for it.

I used to be the world's most powerful psychic... until I took an arrow to the chest.

For that matter, why couldn't Penny contain Sissy's psychic energy long enough for something to be done other than just shooting her? Penny's supposed to be even stronger than Psyche, so, uhm... yeah.

And... did Manti somehow forget he had stunner arrows or something? Or is... well...

Positron: I have bad news... my powers have been malfunctioning for years, and I've got malignancies in both lungs and my thyroid. I'm not sure what to do...
Manticore: Ooh! Ooh! I know!
*starts unlimbering bow*
Positron: No, Justin, you can't shoot me through the heart. That's your answer for everything.
Manticore: Hey, I've saved the entire city twice with that trick!

I do see...

Emo-ness from Manti in the near future. Possibly even leading up to his falling to the dark side.

They no longer hate NPC villains. They still hate PC villains just as much since even though we get to kill more people, we're no less servants of a bigger bad with a better plan.

States: With his power lost he would be resurrected as a very old man and immediately die of age/shock/etc.

Psyche: I don't think she's dead. I'll wait and see but I've got my theory.
