Subscription woes and CO

Hey there and howdy ya'll! I'm a bit of a returning player, trying some stuff and seeing how things are. I couldn't help but wonder a few things:

1. I was thinking of going up to VIP, maybe do it every other month or something but I'm a tad afraid of what I'd lose going back to premium etcetera (I have 4 Badges for the paragon rewards stuff, just wanted some opinions on the newer stuff added and whether it'll add more fun since I haven't seen many people on the Justice Server)

2. Some opinions over on Champs since I've been heavily wondering about community and FRIENDSHIP *rainbow* and possibly some roleplaying on both games, I'm around level 20 with my main dudes around on both games, just had to ask.

For someone in the low tiers of the Paragon Rewards system, VIP vs Premium will be night and day. Specifically premium will be night, a terrifying and lonely forest full of grasping roots tripping you up at every step, as you're tormented by the afterimages of what you lost, fleeting phantasms your mind grasps at to fill the stifling and all-consuming dark.

VIP = awesome sauce.

What you want opinions about the Certain Other game?

Hmm, well 20 is a good time to get think about VIP. I think the salvage system and auction house are important if you want to have in game money for your character to get stuff.

They periodically have sales on VIP memberships. I'm currently paying about $11 per month, a pretty significant savings over the standard rate. If you can swing a six month sub, they're very effective.

Otherwise, you can play pretty effectively for $5 per month. Buy both the auction house and invention licenses, and use the remainder to buy some small costume items in the store. The big thing you are missing with only 4 badges are the global channels, and those are kind of a big deal.

Finally on the Certain Other Game ... I don't often role play ... and when I do ... make mine pencil and paper please.

Well, the good news is that either 1 month of subscription time or $15 spent on the store will get you the 5th Paragon Reward Token and lifetime access to global channels on that account.

As to your second question, we aren't allowed to specifically discuss other games on the CoH Boards.

But for the first question: VIP is worth it. To me, at least. Now, I may go Premium some time in the near future, but all I'll really be losing is Incarnate access because I'm at Tier 9 on the rewards tree. Oh, and salvage & recipe slots I think. Another good thing about going VIP is that every month you receive a free server transfer token. Justice not your thing? You can move a toon from Justice over to Virtue or Freedom which are more highly-populated servers.

I enjoy the Incarnate endgame - well, the first few trials anyway - but a lot of people don't care for it.

I'm a tier 9 VIP who bought every box set over the years... and even I would have a tough time giving up VIP status...

VIP gets you access to a lot of content you'd otherwise have to pay to unlock as a premium.

Things I'd have to unlock if I gave up VIP?

Hero and Villain Epic Archetypes

First Ward content (plus any new free for VIP content they add in the future)

Time Manipulation, Dark Control, Dark Assault, Dark Affinity powersets (plus any new free for VIP sets they add in the future)

Signature Story Arcs (this is an ongoing series or story arcs added every month so this bit of content is constantly growing)

Giving up VIP also means I'd completely lose access to:

Incarnate content with no way of engaging in it unless I go back to being a VIP.

550 Paragon Points every month as part of being vip so I dont have to spend extra on points to get premium stuff.

1 reward token every month as part of being vip to spend on consumable tier 9 items

New tier 9 VIP only Paragon Reward options. (I currently have all of the existing ones unlocked but any new ones added I couldn't get unless I resubbed)

So all in all if someone at my reward level loses that much... someone much lower on the totem is going to lose alot more. VIP is the best bang for your buck IMO.

Jem - Ill/Rad Controller Lv 50+3 Nic - Mind/Psi Dominator Lv 50+3 Lady Liberation - Invuln/SS Tanker Lv 50+1 Invicitx - Demon/Pain Mastermind Lv 50+1 Celeste - Emp/Arch Defender Lv 50+1 Nightsilver - DB/WP Scrapper Lv 34 Dusk Howl - StJ/Regen Brute Lv 32 Kyriani - Time/Energy Defender Lv 41Psifire - FF/Psi Defender Lv 50
Star Lighter - LB/LA Peacebringer Lv 30

This is a good point, the OP is only one PP away from global channels. If money is really tight, buying some things in the store seems like a viable option to me. The OP could buy the alignment system (also free for VIPs), which is another big deal as you level to 20. The goodies in Fort Trident and The Crucible are not to be ignored. Along with market access you could make a lot of dough.

OTOH, if money is not too much of an issue then VIP status gets you all of the above and then some.

And roughly 180-190 automatically available character slots.

192 free character slots available to VIP's with the ability to unlock an additional 576.

Also if it wasn't mentioned before, VIP's get access to Going Rogue for free with their sub but lose access to it when they cancel their subs.

Going VIP for just a month will get you what you need to permanently unlock tells and global channels. and global channels are where you'll find bulk of player communities.

On Justice you'll want to join Justice United, and if you are interested in playing Tanks I strongly urge you to join TankHQ. They hold a regular event "Tanker Tuesdays" and cycle it thru a different server each week.

Another fantastic group of players are the members of the Mentor Project.

http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=212083

A group of helpful players that are spread across pretty much every server in the game.

I dropped the range because of vets and their varying number of character slots.

I think I see what you were doing but wouldn't the range be 192 and up? I ask because being VIP's they'd still get the 12 free per server plus whatever they earned, and purchased (I'm referring to the slots that came with the purchase of old editions).

Course I could be wrong.

To the OP

I'm in a similar situation. played back in the day, came back because it was free and i found i wanted some of the perks. It sounds like what would benefit you well would be buying a copy of GR, which would give you another month (including that last reward token so you can use global) and access to all the GR stuff, EVEN IF YOU GO PREMIUM (with some exceptions, see the wiki I suppose).

I got my copy online from amazon for $1 and you can find similar deals out there if you dig (just make sure they're new, factory sealed).

Also a good point. If you can find a new copy of GR or GR CE, you can add quite a lot of goodies to your account, plus 30 days of VIP time, for less than the usual $15. Once applied, those goodies are permanent (afaik).

Also a good point is to only get "new, factory sealed." If a disc says "played once" or "returned" or "used," then the code inside has been used, and the disc is practically worthless.

Wow, fascinating suggestions! I'll try joning Tanks and Justice United, I brought the sale on the multiple first four episodes of the Who Will die series which got me token number 5 and the Sands of Mu power for Dynaia.

Only if they hadn't purchased Going Rogue separately.

If you didn't have it before and got it free with your subscription, you do indeed lose it.

But if you bought it before Freedom launched, or paid for it separately with PP, you keep access to Praetoria and the side switching mechanic at least. I think you can still earn alignment merits as well, but without access to IOs they aren't worth that much.
