Melee in PvP
none.
go away.
Barrier...youve helped many people out in the past including myself when it comes to picking builds. I know it all depends on whether youre in a good or bad mood on any given day, but cut the guy/gal some slack. After playing this game for so long, you could help one more person get onto the right track of melee pvp stardom.

I know, melee in pvp, Lol!
I cant stand ranged toons though. Excluding KM, what would be a good non stalker melee toon for a beginner to try? |
For fiteklub merc has a nice ss/shield that he runs.
Dueling spines/regen can do pretty well with impale, barbswipe. You will be lacking the ability to put a huge hp dent on a target so you will have whittle opponents down. Therms, colds and poisons will probably eat you for breakfast though.
Zone you can do "ok" on ss characters. I'd avoid elec melee, dark melee and dual blades. I don't know how stj and tw would do.
I guess it would depend if you want to fiteclub or just general zone pvp.
For fiteclub I think your best choice would be a tank or brute with super strength paired with invuln, elec, shield or regen. I also see kat and claws/regen scrappers do pretty well. The same tank and brute sets can work great for general pvp to, since earth mastery does a lot of damage and allows you to close in with a heavy attack such as Knockout blow.
For anything not fiteclub I would recommend martial arts or fire melee with regen, elec or energy aura for scrappers. Weapons mastery is great in zone, web grenade will certainly annoy the squishies :P - Leviathan mastery is nice for crazy survival with hibernate and spammable spirit sharks for means of ranged damage and also blaze mastery does a lot of damage but bare in mind, you will probably want some form of phase, perception and extra resistance from tough so it's up to your preference to choose your epic and power pools
Hope this helped.
Morti.

Mortilance - Elec/WP Stalker
If fiteklub I agree with Morti go with a nearly unkillable tank or brute. For general zone PVP and also for duels I would recommend a regen scrapper of some sort. I prefer either MA, Fire, or Spines paired with Blaze mastery. It does pretty well.
even tanks get shredded by pretty much any ranged with incarnates.
the only thing i have a hard time with are SR tanks and SR scrappers that are smart enough to use insps and incarnates in an adequate way.
and still, they can't kill anything.
With everyone playing poisons, therms, and blasters with an OP recovery debuff i'd imagine so.
But that is true vs anything not just melee.
eh, you don't even need a therm or poison... colds and rads shred any melee if they have reactive.
hell... my earth/fire will do it too.
Well clearly debuffers do well against melee that has always been the case. As far as earth/fire i'd have to see that.
|
ok...
with incarnates, everyone is a debuffer.
you can grab as many as you want, and then switch them according to the situation. example: going against a blaster with a rad with reactive is generally dumb, use diamagnetic. regen? ok maybe go reactive... playing a therm? preemptive.
let me put numbers out... my earth/fire's initial volley against a regen goes for 800 points minimum and animates in 3 seconds, every 10 seconds, i can dish out 500 points of damage to a regen in a 3 second volley which i fill in with a bunch of fast attacks in between that proc 75% of the time because reactive is beast. wdup?
Just based on what happened during the duel ladder we had on victory:
Out of the top 10 (and really I would say only the 5 people were really trying)
First place was a cold/dark-def
Second place was a fire/therm-corr
Third place was a cold/dark -def
Fourth was my km/elec
fifth was a rad/psi def (I think)
Lore was banned, everything else was legal.
I would say that in most duels range with debuffs is going to beat a melee character (or it will end up a tie, if the melee runs around like a ....well .... a ...tree frog with its head cut off)
However, if the op is really just trying to get his/her toes wet with pvp, I think melee isn't necessarily as bad of a choice as barrier is saying especially if its for zone play.
Most of the time (unless the person doesn't understand when to phase or run) playing a melee character will allow that person to attack and retreat as needed without dying which for some reason seems to be the 'goal' for some zone pvpers. I mean I've seen guys run to the drones just so "you didn't kill me".
As far as dishing out dps (what I think barrier is saying) range should always have the upper hand and for the most part should be able to stay at range to reduce the incoming melee attacks, but most zone pvpers worth their salt will have some type of immob power or follow around someone who does and jump on a character when they are mezzed, they may only get off one attack, but still sometimes thats all they want.

going to try to be nice for a second....

Also it is a far less hostile environment for a tank than any ranged toons and is inherently easier for a new player than bringing in a ranged toon.
barrier is just a cool aura unless you have the debuff resists to back it up.
same with magus.
Ultimately though it is certainly to each its own. RV is teeming with the melee types and they seem to do just fine. Hell, seems fiteklub has more participants than any organized PVP or arena duels.
It's quite underrated, but I've found most of my melee toons benefit from the T4 ageless desitiny that offers the defense debuff resistance as well as 100% end. It counters just about every debuff situation when used accordingly, and costs no endurance.
Obviously melee sets with defense debuffs already benefit from it moreso than sets that dont. I'm sure however that all (sets) would notice the increase in survivability when the ability to to diminish the effects of what is most effective at killing them is just a button push away.
I haven't used this incarnate with my squishies for very long... but I have long enough on my melee toons to suggest anyone playing melee toons in RV not "sleep" on it.
"Situational power? Sure. Although in a sense... all powers are situational. It's just that some situations occur more than others." Understand the situation needed in order for the power to be most effective... and make that situation happen.

I know I've been away for a while but I never thought people would seriously be discussing fiteklub...
Oh well, I ran an Elec/Elec blaster seriously in PvP so it's not like I have room to talk :P

"One day we all may see each other elsewhere. In Tyria, in Azeroth. We may pass each other and never know it. And that's sad. But if nothing else, we'll still have Rhode Island."
Sorry it took so long to respond, I have murderous work hours though, and cant get on the forums on a government computer.
Zone PvP is where I am wanting to play.
So am I understanding that to do well with a melee toon, let's say in RV, I would either need to be a tank, a stalker, or a regen scrapper?
Ok, thanks for the info, I will stew over it.
Willpower has more passive regen than Regen does. Who thought that was a good idea?
Can we get a fix for Energy Melee instead of more new sets?
When your new to zone pvp, it could be good advice to build with the most popular "survivable" sets. However, for me, it is most challenging and rewarding to compete in pvp with less than attractive sets. I just like being different, along with the challenge. The incarnates do help those less attractive builds become more attractive if you can blend the sets together, but this can be done without incarnates too.
I will say this, don't just look at your own survivability, but check out what most other builds struggle against but what and how you can maximize a less attractive build to capitalize on this as well.
Dude, I roll (not as much lately) with a SD/Warmace Tank (the only one I've seen in RV) and do quite well (nd to tweak dmg a lil bit more). I revamped my Stormer with incarnates to where, it is never taken lightly anymore, but indeed is quite "disruptive". Someone mentioned their elec/elec blaster embarrassingly. I'm dusting off and retooling mine via incarnates and complimentary IO sets. Even with the incarnate end reduction boost, and people focusing on the blaster dmg, they forget that end drain is a scary thing. MAXIMIZE your builds strengths, and learn how and when to apply them.
I'm also messing around with (GASP) Duel Blades and a Titan toon (couple of them actually) for PVP. It makes it fun for me. Do the same. Take a few bruises to learn what you need to do to your builds and own from there. LOL
