Really surprised by Exalted

Before I get to my point, please understand I am not upset nor am I picking on anyone. I am just really surprised. I play on 6 servers, but recently moved all of my characters from Triumph to Exalted. I moved to find a larger population to play with.

What I find myself surprised by is the amount of players I have run into that seem to be very new to the game. Yesterday I was forming a Treespec (WST this week) and had probably 7 people ask to join, but then when I tried to invite they were heroes. I also had 5-6 tells that said something like, "What is that?" or "What is Treespec?".

Not the end of the world, but I really had the impression that Exalted would be the server with the more experienced players.

From what I've seen, the more experienced players stayed on their home servers, but then again that is just my own experience from a very limited sample size.

Who do I have to *&^% around here to get more Targeted AoE recipes added?

I think there are a lot of free players who bought the $1 VIP account and moved over to exalted. That might explain this.

A lot of people had that false impression the moment that Exalted opened. People transferred over to Exalted, assuming that it would be full of nothing but highly experienced players. It was not the case. For it to be a healthy server, it should not be the case. It has a mixture, which is the right way to go, imo. Most of those that transferred over to Exalted expecting nothing but highly experienced players have since transferred back to their original servers.

However, I have noticed during my brief times playing CoH over the past month that there are a lot more newbies. I don't know if it just seems like there are a lot more newbies lately because most of the more experienced players I used to play with have left the game over the past couple of months, or if there is a genuine influx of new players. Regardless, there have been a lot of people showing up for the past few Hamidon raids that I have never seen before, and have never done a Hamidon raid before... mostly with Fiery Aura Brutes and Tankers with only 4 points of knockback protection and no taunt... but I digress.

I hope that this is true, even if it will add a little frustration to some of us in the short term. How great to build a brand new, albeit smaller, playerbase that might stick around a year or two.

The other funny thing from last night, even with all of the people who didn't know what a treespec was, on my team of 8 that I finally got, 2 had never done one.

I've noticed that we've gotten an influx of newbies to the server...they usually call out for a free AE farm or try to sell runs on a fire farm

I think a lot of new players with VIP accounts just choose Exalted because of the shiny (VIP) after the name, and this has resulted in a bigger supply of new people than any other server gets. Maybe they're VIPs, but that doesn't mean they know what they're doing.

However, my big disappointment with Exalted had nothing to do with the new people. I created a VEAT over there, and redside was so extremely dead that I transferred him back to Justice where he could get teams.

I, for one, won't play on Exalted. It seems like Freedom 2.0 to me... and I really like the communities on the servers I already played on.

Why would I move?

Hmm...I always feel like I'm the newbie when I PUG on Exalted since I've only been playing a bit over a year.

My only real complaint about Exalted is redside though. It is a ghost town for realz.

Compared to Triumph, my home server, there is a lot less chatter in the help channel (something I despise). Less 'dfb lf2m pst lolwtfbbq' posts from freebies who cannot use broadcast.

I will say I used to always monitor the help channel, so I could help people. But the help channel has become a LFT channel more than a help channel.

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

I chalk it up to the server load bubbles.

Not knowing that Ex is the ViP only server, new players just look for the one with the highest population and start there.

This could be an opportunity to teach new players. As long as they are willing to listen, they can learn new things about the game from vets. With experienced players, sometimes you may get things like: "That's not how we do it on <server name>." "It's much better if you do it like ____." "You're wrong, you'll just agro ___ and faceplant us all." Then things might escalate into who's right or wrong.

New players are kinda like a blank slate, ripe for molding.
In general, it would be good for the game if new players would find a reason to stay, beyond the thrill of leveling up thru farms or DFB.

I wasn't aware there was a different way to level up...

In my experience, I'd say you're better off not knowing. I don't think I've ever been on one that didn't go horribly awry.

Really? Really? Then you have been on the wrong ones. I'd say when redside first came out this may be true for me, but the last, say, 30 times I have done one, we are done in about 14 minutes with no death. They are usually very, very easy now. IMHO

The last time I was on one was probably within a year of when CoV came out. There was usually a plan set in motion that fell apart under swarming CoT ambushes as I recall. Luckily, I was never actually in need of a respec.

Like most TFs/Trials, once players got used to "treespec", it became a lot easier. I never need respecs, but do the treespec when it is the WST--the xp bonus (1/2 level!) or the incarnate bonus make it worth it.
