How to Get More Players
Although I fail to see how 'shutting 3 servers down' would help CoX, funnily today the WoW clone announced a server merge. I don't know if that's a 'doom' move since making this when it's less than a year old might not affect players as much as doing it to an older game like CoX. Also, maybe they went overboard on the server stuff, the game has 27 NA servers and not sure how many EU ones.
And that game is pretty popular and imo deserves the good reviews - awesome graphics, interesting class system, fun pvp, community was very helpful when I asked about builds and stuff in the forums - well those were my impressions from playing it for 2 months, I gave up because I don't like the slower WoW game style (although it was a bit faster than WoW imo). Now Cox... even with the awesome graphics from all the newer games (including single player ones like Skyrim), Cox is the one I like the gameplay the best and the only one I still stop to look at another toon and am still wowed by another player's design/costume after years and despite the dated graphics. I'm not a big spender but the game has goten more money from me with the new system and I don't regret my purchases (Except for beam rifle, hate that set lol, but it happens).
I still think that CoX's marketing is the worst anyway since nobody knows the damn game, I have to show the website or screenshots I took when my friends, brazilian or american, ask about it since I mention CoX sometimes because it's the only game I play (I'm totally against server merge and I mostly play on the two 'big ones'). Especially when, in the link I mentioned in my previous post with the top score MMOs of all time on MMORPG.com, Cox is second and besides the first and third ones (WoW and EVE), they are the only three 'old' games in the top 10 - Evercrack II comes in 14th.
(I like that site because they do re-reviews and expansion reviews, they are MMO-focused after all, so it's not a 'I played 10 hours and etc' kind of review you see there except maybe for new releases).
I'm not sure how (or even if) hybrid "subscription" models are going to be counted. It's a lot harder than counting pure subscription games, and just "income from the game" isn't a great way of doing it (did a few people buy a lot of points? Or is it a bunch of people buying a few?) |
For our purposes, though, it really doesn't matter whether the game is profitable because of 100,000 people making $5 impulse buys every week or one guy who is spending $500,000 on the game every week because he is insane and also stupidly wealthy. In both cases, the servers stay up and we keep playing.
You know, I was at the extreme northern end of Boomtown the other night at 2am, and I stood there spamming "petless MM looking for farm" in local for like a half-hour. Nobody responded.
This game is doomed.
FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.
Disgruntled players shouting "merge the servers" is a staple in every game in the industry.

So it's not like your opinions matter, oui?

Only Quebec is francophone, right? So his opinion might matter if he was born in one of the other provinces.

So here we are. It's Friday night/Saturday morning on Pinnacle and the OP claimed he was going to check the population during the peak NA gaming hours.
Like I said Saturday night Eastern Time I'm going to go server hoping, that used to be the peek time for Pinnacle.
|
Could it be because of this?
67 players online and unhidden spread across three factions with at least 72 players unhidden in Pinnacles 2 most popular global channels.
The time? 2 am Eastern Standard.
So much for the server being dead.
Edit: Meh posted day early. That's what I get for sleeping days.
Let me start by saying: No
For all the reasons listed in this thread.
Anyway, if the OP needed convincing that server merges are B-A-D, they should look no further than Warhammer Online.
What used to be a great game is now pretty much in its death throes.
-BECAUSE- the Developers made decisions such as merging servers.
I know that a lot of people were outraged, and rightly so. Their guilds were dismantled, their characters had to be renamed. The works.
Its bad decisions like -merging servers- that kills a game, not a low population.
I was doing some playthroughs of City of Heroes. Now they will serve as memories of a better time ...
Okay so now it's the correct day and time, 10:36 PM EST Saturday.
108 players unhidden to a Search. Half of whom are on the very faction the OP claims is dead and 125/80 players showing up in two of Pinnacles top global channels.
And even if you assume that everyone who is a member of Cozmic's Playground is also a member of Pinnbadges, the population of the global channels show as being higher than the number of players showing up Searching all three factions.
That means at least roughly 15-20% of Pinnacles population is /hidden from searches.
(I need someone whose good at math to confirm my rough guesstimate)
So once again Pinnacles not a dead server.
