Newbie and EU community

Greetings!

I am a new player, just started last Christmas with some friends and I like the game a lot. I've started on Infinity as that was the name of a MUD we used to play on in the nineties.

I have since found out that there used to be a difference between NA and EU servers but that things were merged last summer. I also found that Infinity used to be a NA server.

My question basically is if the difference still matters. I already noticed quite a few CoX events get organized at times that are after midnight for me (the Netherlands). This might just be because the EU community is much smaller or that I'm not on the right server or not looking in the right places.

I only have a few characters yet and so do my friends, and given VIP status, we might move servers at this point. Can you also move a SuperGroup? We're playing villains b.t.w.

I am mainly looking for advice on if we should move to one of the old EU servers. Any tips on what events exist that are EU timezone compatible is also welcome. In general what should an European player do to get most out of this game?

Cheers

RW

Bit of a late welcome to the game first

Villainside is a bit . . . . low population regardless of server you are on sadly [Freedom/Virtue maybe only exceptions here].

The old EU servers [english speaking] are Union and Defiant. I myself use Union as my home server, however one of the general rules of both servers is to join their global channels for teams/chats/taskforces etc.
I'll let somebody from Defiant state their global channels but for Union it is Union Chat, Sals Badgehunters and Union Taskforce. When the dev team do competitions for the EU they tend to do it roughly 7pm GMT. Other than that it is the community which do the competitions on a server basis.
For example i myself sometimes hold a quiz on the channel Union Chat while others do costume competitions or maybe a pvp event.

While i find that early morning is a bit quiet on all servers, from lunchtime onwards i much prefer Union to the old NA ones simply because there is a higher active number of players.

You cannot transfer a supergroup over either sadly If you do pick union feel free to ask anything on Union Chat as the channel is always full of somebody willing to help/general chat [beware of the channel after 9pm though!!! ]

Edit to add Union weekly events:

Usually daily trials from 6pm onwards.
Friday at 8pm = CoP Trial
Wednesday at 8pm = Mothership Raid

Those are the ones i can think of at such an early hour [coffee not woke me up yet ].

@Damz Find me on the global channel Union Chat. One of the best "chat channels" ingame!

The old EU servers were...

Union (busier, unofficially an RP server, though if RP is what you're after Virtue is even bigger)
Defiant (quieter, but still nice community)
Vigilance (French language)
Zukunft (German Language)

I've only been on Defiant lately, but in my experience it tends to be busiest between 6PM - 12PM GMT, incarnate trials start running each night from 8PM - 8:30PM GMT up until 11 or midnight if that's what you want, Mothership or Hamidon raids run on sunday nights starting from 7PM. Join the "Defiant Events EU" channel.

There are probably many EU players playing on US servers, but I'm not aware of any servers with specific EU communities. But you'll basically always get a team on Freedom since it's by far the busiest server. (with the attendant community issues)

Personally I'd say give Defiant and Union a shot and stick with whoever you like better.

Oh, and welcome to the game!

You'd certainly be welcome on Vigilance and Zukunft as well, but I think the largest European player population can be found on Union.

Unfortunately, no, this cannot be done. But since you just started playing a few weeks ago, you won't lose much prestige if you just form a new super group on your new home server. (If you urgently need more prestige, I'm willing to donate some to your SG; just send me a PM.)

Welcome to CoH/V.

I would suggest making an alt on both English speaking servers (Defiant and Union) play for a week or two on both then you should get an idea which suits you best.

My home is Defiant we have a smaller population then Union (managed to stop myself calling it Onion) but we are running events most nights and we are very friendly.

As has been said Defiant Events EU is the channel to be on.

Happy to be on Defiant.

We don't have a lot of prestige yet, so it's not a big issue. I'll stick with the English servers as my two options. I do speak French and German as well, but my friends don't and my English is better.

So my choices are sticking to Infinity, going to Union or to Defiant. Does anyone know population numbers or can make a guess? I just want to compare my experience on Infinity.

Also when talking about RP on Union, what does that mean? I do like a bit of RP every now and then, I do play the Mutants and Masterminds pen-and-paper RPG. My characters do have a decent description, one of them even more, as he's based on a character I've played in M&M. When online we have decided some of the missions we did on our character backgrounds and such, but most of the time we go out of character and just do what makes sense.
I've never done RP in an MMORPG. What does it mean?

I've got to agree with Leese that Defiant wakes up around 18:00, during mornings or mid day there isn't much to do.

The only non-eu server i've played on is Exalted, and that one wakes up around 23:00.

After reading this post i might try Onion myself, always started playing on Defiant, cause after beta Union was marketed as "RP-only" server.

Trouwens, Hoi! Eerste andere Nederlander die ik hier gezien heb tot nu toe.

I arbitrarily started on Infinity and it was my main server for many years. I've got character colonies on 4 additional servers now, so I rotate around and don't really claim a main server anymore. Infinity used to be pretty steady as the 3rd most populated NA server. Unfortunately, its population took a big hit when free server transfers were given out last year.

You can see the server load by the server's position in the server selection screen. Note, server load doesn't necessarily equate to player population, but it's close enough since that's all we have to go with. The top most is the last server you were on. Second from the top is the least load and the bottom most is highest load. Of course, this is all relative to time of day. Nowadays, you'll generally see Virtue and Freedom vying for most load, followed by the new Exalted (VIP-only) server.

I believe the Justice server is welcoming Aussie/Oceanic region players to establish itself as their unofficial server.

If you need a Prestige infusion (whether you decide to migrate or stay), check with Fulmens and see if he's still offering.

We've played on Union a bit yesterday evening, and it seems to be similarly populated to Infinity (In Atlas Park and Mercy Island) with the peak indeed being a few hours earlier in the evening. We did experience lag a few times on Infinity, on Union we didn't, although that might just be luck, it is a consideration to take into account.

We have a meeting this evening to discuss moving. One of my friends is on a free account but none of his characters are above level 10, the others have at least 2 VIP transfers which would be sufficient for the level 10+ characters we have. All our character names are available.

Thanks for the input. Any more advice is always welcome.

I wont be ingame on union until a bit later today but if you need influence/prestige to settle in to your new server then dont hesitate to ask.
Theres a costume contest at 8pm [GMT] tonight too under Atlas on Union if that convinces you

Thanks for the offer, but we're meeting offline to discuss this. We'll be busy with pen-and-paper RPG and wont be online until tomorrow. I might take you up on that offer later, if we decide to switch. Thanks.

We'll mostly be going Villain side, so I don't think we can get there any way.

Roleplaying in an MMORPG is a lot like a free-form RP in many ways. You create your character, figure out their background, their motivations, their quirks etc and then interact with other characters in-character. Because there are no set 'rules' or random dice rolls each person works out how their character will react in any given situation. I highly recommend reading "Hints, Tips and Tricks for New Roleplayers" in the Roleplay section of the forums.

There's usually a few roleplayers hanging around in the blue bar in Pocket D most evenings, so feel free to pop along and lurk in a corner, or join in with the randomness. There's also a few RP bases Supergroups that do in character missions together, or just hang out and RP, as well as random RPers who will RP everywhere and anywhere - even if they're not with other roleplayers lol.

There's also the Handbook of the Union Universe which lists quite a few of the roleplayed characters, and also has a list of roleplaying supergroups - although some of it might be a little out of date.

There's also the Union Roleplayers channel in game, which is usually out of character chatter about just about anything, although it is also used to discuss plots, character ideas, and other things pertaining to roleplay. It's mainly a hang out for the roleplay community on Union. We're a friendly bunch usually (although totally nuts), and will do our best to try and answer any questions you might have.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

We've decided to move from Infinity to Union based on your input.
