Gold Badge Expert Slope...

I keep missing this by about 4 seconds and not really sure what to do to go faster. I have speed boost and I am taking the portal and going left (The snow guy's side).

Any other tips for this? My character is 50..

Inertial Reduction is more important than Speed Boost for a good time on the "expert" course.

Ok I will ask for one... might I ask why? Does it give you more speed?

Movement Control.

Other than these forums. it's the most poorly designed element of the game. I don't think I've actually seen people more bitter about something apart from ED. I know people that simply ignore the winter event or won't even log on while it's active due to how ridiculous the ski course is.

I hate those badges. Twitchy twitchy twitchy. I don't have any of them on any of my characters.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. Exactly. Movement control is far more important for the ski slopes than powers that give you raw speed. I've been able to get all the ski badges with plenty of time to spare just by using Inertial Reduction and Sprint.

Here's why that's the case: As you start to move down the slopes the gravity effect will easily give you all the "speed" you need to make it down fast enough. With Movement Control powers it becomes very simple to control yourself so that you can maximize the gravity effect without bumping against the walls or missing the jumps.

Good Luck.

Activating Ninja Run was all I needed. Once I memorized where the couple of problem-checkpoints were, I got it with a couple seconds to spare. Beast Run would probably do the same for folks, though, obviously, that'd only apply to people who bought the Natural or Animal packs.

Yeah I haven't really tried the slopes since they introduced the Ninja/Beast run powers. Those powers probably provide a good combination of speed and inertial control all by themselves for some people to manage the gold. I suspect it's probably still easier to do it with Inertial Reduction involved but at least the Ninja/Beast run powers give us more tools to work with.

I am curious, anyone try it with Fly+Afterburner this year?

(And as to the OP - the only characters I have that have worked for these badges also got IR as the key element to success, as per the other posters.)

I imagine the key there would be if Afterburner gives you enough inertial control to counteract the relatively "sloppy" nature of the basic Fly power. My guess is that using Afterburner would be better than nothing, but it probably wouldn't be the optimal power to use for overall speed/control.

Afterburner does give significant control of the 'sloppy' nature of fly.
I doubt the total speed needed is there, but didn't think to try it when I was on briefly last night. Just wondered if anyone else did.

I did it with Fly+Afterburner, did okay; then I turned off Fly and just used Afterburner for the movement control and that shaved several seconds off my time.

I can reach a speed of 87.95mph with Afterburner on, and I have been able to get the Silver Medal in each timed event. I have not been able to get a Gold, but you might be able to shave a few seconds off your time by skipping part of the course and going straight to each way point.

You don't have to do anything tricky like shortcutting the waypoints. In fact with the way the course is designed I'll bet there's really no way to shortcut any of the waypoints without negatively ADDING time to your run.

Again it doesn't really matter how fast you can go using any speed-oriented powers on the ski slopes. As long as you don't bump into walls and you nail all of the jumps the gravity effect of the ice itself will move you as fast as you need to go all by itself. This is why people like Placta have been able to finish the course faster by concentrating on control more than pure speed.

I realize everyone assumes using speed-oriented powers will let you finish this course faster but I assure you it's inertial control, not speed, which is the primary thing you need to boost here.

The slopes were always fun for a laugh and a bit of frustration but until I got ninja run I had never been able to get more than a bronze on the beginner slope. Now I have to slow myself down to get the silver and bronze on the beginner and the silver is fairly easy on the expert. Expert gold... yeah, that's still a problem for me. I think I got it on one character when someone gave me IR but I rarely see kin's on the platform, not that I blame them.

There's an alternative to having a Kin cast IR on you, but it's an admittedly less than ideal one. The Low-G Pack that you can buy from Siren's Call gives you a temp power which only lasts 30 minutes of real-time but it does effectively give you the same kind of benefit that IR does. I've used it in the past for the ski slopes but that was long before we had more direct options like Ninja Run.

Good luck regardless.

Doesn't IR require you to be in a group?

No, it buffs everyone in the radius regardless of team/league status.

I've not heard that sentiment before. I'm sure some people get frustrated over the ski badges, but that's entitlement talking more than anything. Some people enjoy the Ski courses and some don't, same with everything else in this game.

I'm still waiting for them to add a 3rd Ski course *looks at development team that failed to put out any meaningful content with this years winter event*

I'm just about as far from being a super "twitchy" hand/eye coordinated game player as you can get. I'll admit that the ski slopes did frustrate me for a good number of hours, especially when I kept missing the Speeder badge by a few seconds. But I kept trying it and eventually figured out the importance of the inertia control powers. Since then I've completed all the ski badges on many different characters over the years.

Sure it was a challenge, but comparing the ski slopes to the level of angst brought on by ED is really pushing it. *shrugs*
