Does the refer a friend deal work with the 1 dollar VIP special?

Trying to get a response here; I can refer a lot of friends if you can do the refer a friend (both parties get 500 points).

Essentially it could be 500 points = 1 dollar.

So could a redname respond? Does the refer a friend work with it?

Your friend must pay for at least a one-month subscription to City of Heroes Freedom, you and the friend you refer will each get 500 Paragon Points automatically.

So only after your friend pays $15 will you both get the 500pp

Right thats what the vip deal is a month sub for a dollar.

I know the Black Friday sale of VIP starter kits for $0.99 starts on the 25th of November. I'd imagine since the only qualifier for the code is that your friend you're referring only pay for one month of VIP at least, it shouldn't matter if the month is $15 or $0.99, they'd still get a month's worth of VIP.

But I'm no authority, so I can only guess logically at the issue.

Keep in mind the minimum amount of points you can buy is 400. Which means you're spending $5. All this would accomplish is you receiving 100 extra points for $5. Unless the VIP 0.99 cents deal is a 'code' that you can give to someone else. In THAT case, shenanigans.

I could be wrong, but when I Referred a Friend it didn't seem to be a code you put in now and then pay some time down the road. After entering the code, it went straight to picking a payment plan and charged the card

It seems account management is down for maintenance, or I'd try this. I was going to set up a Preemie account for my sister anyway, might as well try to get bennies for me along the way. Once maintenance is over, I'll do the refer a friend and we'll see what happens at that point. Then on Friday, I'll do the 99 cent deal and we'll see what happens at THAT point.

I think if the 99 cent thing does work with refer a friend, then that would be a bad thing for Paragon Studios.

I look forward to hearing this.

You won't get the bonus unless your sister's account pays for a subscription with a credit card or game time card - a 'retail code' doesn't count. That's exactly how it worked when they had the $1.99 offer, so why would it change now?

I find it rather amusing that you think that Paragon would be selling 1000 points for a dollar.

Maybe you are mistaken, they dont sell retail codes anymore now the game is free. Basically this deal is selling a paid month for 1 dollar not a retail code.

OK. So, basically, the Refer a Friend deal requires you to sign up for a subscription on the referred account. I was going to do this anyway for my sister through the starter kit, but it looks like even at the start of things, you have to subscribe just for the Refer a Friend to take effect; this blocks you from using the VIP kit because you can't have spent any money on an account to use it.

No the refer a friend works on premium accounts too, it works on anything that isn't VIP. If its a premium account the account has to not have been VIP for 90 days.

Since this deal is a subscription for a dollar, I think it could work.

Go ahead and try it but don't be surprised or angry if it doesn't work the way you want it to.

She didn't say the Refer a friend didn't work on Premium accounts, she said that part of the refer a friend is that you have to set up a payment plan at the time of entering the code and the VIP pack isn't an option. The VIP pack is only usable on new accounts, which no account using the refer a friend is, so they can't be combined.

In order to get credit for the Refer a Friend deal, YOU MUST BUY A MONTH OF VIP TIME.

In order to use the Starter Kit, YOU MUST NOT HAVE PURCHASED GAME TIME OR POINTS.

You have to do the Refer a Friend deal first, to actually refer the friend, which requires at least a $15 investment, which means you cannot do the Starter Kit.

Okay, some people seem to be confused about what's being asked/proposed by the OP. Let's try this:

Bill has an active VIP subscription.
Ted has never played the game before.

Bill uses the "refer a friend" program to tell Ted about the game.

If Ted likes the game and decides to use the Black Friday deal to buy a month of VIP time for $0.99, does Bill get 500 points for having referred him?
And, by extension, if Bill used the "refer a friend" program to tell himself about the game by using a second email address, and then uses the Black Friday deal to buy a month of VIP time on his second/new account for $0.99, does his first/old account get 500 points for having referred the second one?

Or do the free points from the "refer a friend" program only kick in if the referred party buys their VIP time at full price?

FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.

The thing is, you can't do this.

If you enter the refer a friend code into an account you immediately have to enter your payment details or enter a serial key from a time card in order to activate the account. The starter pack doesn't give you a serial key, so it can't be used here.

If you buy the starter pack, you immediately have to apply it to an account, with no option to enter the refer-a-friend code.

So, the two options are mutually exclusive. So no 1000 points for $0.99

The most you will be able to gain is to start an account with the starter kit, then when they release the super packs with tradable items, spend the 400 points your account gets for its 1 month on them and give everything you get to your main account. You might end up with more than $0.99 of stuff on your main account.

You cannot combine the Refer a Friend deal with the Starter Kit.

I have said this before, twice now, and someone else has also explained it. [EDIT: and now a third person ninja'd my post as well! ]

Let me explain it again in a story summary.

Bill has been a subscriber for X number of months/years/whatever. Ted just created his brand new freebie account today because Bill was talking about it at Thanksgiving. Bill sends Ted a Refer a Friend invitation.

Ted applies the Refer a Friend code that was emailed to him, to his brand new freebie account. Ted is required to input a payment plan, which includes paying for a month of VIP service, in order to continue with the Refer a Friend process. The Starter Kit is not an option for a payment plan. Payment plans are game time cards, credit/debit cards, and Paypal. If Ted does not agree to a payment plan, the Refer a Friend process is canceled.

In order for Bill and Ted to get their 500 pts each from the Refer a Friend, Ted MUST subscribe to the game.

In order for Ted to buy the VIP Starter Kit, Ted MUST NOT subscribe to the game.

Refer a Friend and VIP Starter Kit cannot be combined. They are mutually exclusive.

EDIT2: By the way, the Refer a Friend process does not include creation of a new account, which is downright stupid. You have to create a freebie account first, and then use the serial code on it. This is completely counter-intuitive, and I sent in feedback saying as much while I was doing this for my sister yesterday morning. It's just stupid that getting a referral code means nothing unless you have already created an account. And the error message when you try to apply a referral code when you have no accounts is ambiguous (something like "you have no applicable accounts" - um, hello! no kidding! I was just referred to play, thanks! create me an account during this process! duh)

Yes, "Refer A Friend" will work on a Premium account, but the "VIP Starter Kit" will NOT. It can only be used on an account which has never spent any money. The VIP Starter kit will immediately set the account up for one month of access. Since it is an active VIP account, Refer A Friend will NOT work because your friend is already referred. In order to refer that account, it would need to be inactive for 90 days.

Sooo... your options are as follows:

1. Use the Refer-A-Friend program, set up a new account, pay 15 bucks for the first month, and get 500 points on both accounts, and never use the VIP Starter Kit on that account.
2. Use the VIP Starter Kit on the account, get the 400 points on that account, and nothing on your primary account. Optionally, if you then let the account lapse for 90 days, you can get the Refer-A-Friend bonus by referring the account in 90 days, but you will end up having to pay for a month subscription on it for it to award the bonus.

Basically, Refer-A-Friend is gonna cost you 15 bucks whether you do it now or 90 days down the road. The Starter Kit can only be used when you are initially setting up the account though.
