Longer Bios
Less is more.
Don't double space. Seriously. It takes up 10 characters.
My guides:Dark Melee/Dark Armor/Soul Mastery, Illusion Control/Kinetics/Primal Forces Mastery, Electric Armor
"Dark Armor is a complete waste as a tanking set."
More is TL;DR. Give me the Reader's Digest version. If I want to read more, I'll got to someone's web site or ouroportal.com (when it goes back online anyhow). I don't read bios to read novels.
Obviously just my opinion.
But if the max length were increased so that current bios could be double-spaced, people would just write more.

For whom is the bio?
When I pull up someone's info in-game, I don't have the time (nor the inclination, tbh) to read anything I have to scroll.
When it's back online in a few days, the Ouroboros Portal is a place to put up lengthy character bios, pics, stories, etc.... Put a link to it in the in-game bio space.

Again, who's going to read a bio has no relevance to a character owner who is not interested reader traffic.

So don't read it. What does your willingness to read my bio have to do with my desire to write it? Not everyone writes text to show it off. Some of us write text for ourselves. So if you don't want to read longer bios... Well, don't. I won't mind. So long as I can actually write it, I honestly don't give a toss who reads it.

Playernotes are a great place to put in-game 'sticky notes' for yourself since they don't have to use a valid character name. If it is a valid character name, the game links the note to the player's global info. If it isn't a valid character name, it's just a text file you can read and edit anytime.

That space is for your character's bio, not their life story.
As far as I'm concerned, it is solely for myself. If people want to random-read my bio, great. If they don't, meh. If someone specifically wants to know what my character is about, he'll read it one way or another, and if someone doesn't care, he won't read it at all.
Again, who's going to read a bio has no relevance to a character owner who is not interested reader traffic. |
Also, breaking up bios into multiple paragraphs helps avoid the Wall of Text Effect.
Well, it seems it's already LESS that it was sometime prior to I21. I've gone back recently to work on some of my character bio's and found that what I originally wrote will no longer fit. Maybe that has to do with doublespace=10 characters? I double-space after sentences by force of STRONG habit because that is how I learned on the typewriter. Maybe I'm imagining things.
Yeah, it's disappointing and I have always run up against the limit again and again with various bio's. I also desperately wish it behaved better just for purposes of entering and editing that text, but that is likely to be SO far down the list of priorities I hold almost no hope it will ever be addressed. I furthermore wonder just what orifice they pulled that particular character limit from.
However, I take it as a CHALLENGE to fit a description or bio into that meager space allotted - especially if I'm hitting the limit. What information do I NEED to put down? What can I leave out? How can I phrase this more efficiently without losing important pieces of what I want to say - or better yet fitting even more meaning into less space.
And for my characters it's NEVER (okay, almost never) just a dry, boring recitation of major events in the characters life story from birth. It appears as a page of entries from a journal; it's a police or government agency report excerpt; it's florid prose by the character himself; it's a few paragraphs describing the moment of the characters discovery of her mutation; it's a poem that fits the characters attitude; whatever. I try to exercise as much creativity with every bio I write - but hitting the limit only tells me I'm being too long-winded and need to re-write it, tighten it up, make it BETTER - not just longer.
More is less, by which I mean to say, in all seriousness, it has not escaped my notice that among my numerous alts on various servers, while the more detailed biographic sketches may or may not elicit approving comments from the general populace, whether in pick-up groups, task forces, or simply the gatherings at the auction house, it is the pithier, more straightforward bios - written in direct language and without extraneous rhetorical flourishes, I should point out - that tend to receive the most unsolicited compliments, since these are the ones that evidently best convey not only the imaginative concept of the characters, but also the personal qualities of the player behind the avatars.

By contrast, characters I'd written a long time ago whose bios mostly come down to a dry description or a basic sequence of events rarely get much notice, even from people I directly ask to read them and give me an opinion. While I generally don't expect people to read my bios, what I want those who do to find in them is not information, but rather an emotion. At the end of the day, it's all fan fiction that no-one cares about. Unless you have an amazingly ground-breaking idea (and I rarely do), no-one cares about your backstory. I try to make something that leaves an impact, and will sacrifice plot points in order to achieve this.

Point is, yes - paragraphs help, and they help greatly.

I CONSTANTLY hit the character limit on my bios. I don't tell a life story, but I usually explain their origin, how their powers work, why they're in Paragon City/Rogue Isles, and what their ultimate goal is. I'd prefer if they doubled it, to like 2048 characters. And me personally, I love reading a good bio. If it's good, the length really shouldn't matter that much to you.
Shadowblaze - Lvl 50 Dark/Thermal Cor, Alexander Kalsoa - Lvl 50 BS/Regen Scrapper, and a whole bunch of other Alts. Global is @Shadowblaze.
If you don't like reading long bios, or won't read a bio that scrolls. Then don't.
Let us enjoy our longer bios. People do appreciate longer ones as well as not.
Perhaps the Bio doesn't need extending, but let's have a "Backstory" Tab in the bio between Bio and Badges.
If you don't want to look in that tab, it'll never offend your TL;DR senses. For those of use that like to write and read longer pieces, we can look there.
Forse: lvl 22 FF/NRG Defender
Tam Krannock: lvl 37 Shield/Mace Tanker
Toppa Grace: lvl 25 Fire/Ice Blaster
----
Red Commissar: I'm in the Queen Mother. Only more awesome. And alive
Check. OK, now how do I attach this to my character so I can access it from inside the game without having to remember where on which of my hard drives I put it?
|
I also have bios for my characters that I don't care if anyone reads - so I don't bother typing them out and they stay in my head.
What do you gain by typing out a bio and linking it to a character inside the game, if it is NOT there so others can read it?
I used to want more space for the bio myself. But then I realized that such would increase the temptation of turning what should just be a quick and concise overview of the character (with little hints of personal background they may reveal) into an extensive life story. It reminded me of my old days on various RP oriented MU*s. I would do a look at a character, and instead of just a quick description of what they looked like, I would get pages of info that no one would ever really know unless they asked.
Now, I find I enjoy the challenge of whipping up something useful and informative in a very limited space. I imagine heroes and villains all having their own little PDA type thingie to access their city's databases to look up information on others. With some of my characters, there will be some history explaining why he or she is doing what they do or how they got their powers. Others may just have decided to put a song or poem quote in their database entry. While yet others may have decided to withhold any info for the time being...
Examples:
I try to exercise as much creativity with every bio I write - but hitting the limit only tells me I'm being too long-winded and need to re-write it, tighten it up, make it BETTER - not just longer.

It's a shame that the devs haven't seen fit to point out the existence of character bios to new players in the tutorial. Perhaps they could revisit it.

Honestly, if that one fact were fixed, I wouldn't have too many gripes with the current allotted amount.
And as for who reads bios? Me. Waiting for a TF or trial to form up? Let's see what the team/leaguemates have to say about themselves. Standing around at Wentworth's waiting for that last salvage build to fill? That's a cool costume over there, let's see if there's a cool background to go with it. Just happen to be traveling across the zone to my mission? Oh, there's another character. What's his story?
Am I the only person that would like a longer bio than 1023 characters?
I was just wondering if this could be lengthened or if there is a reason why the space to write your bio is so short. I appreciate that there has to be a limit but 1023 characters isnt a lot.
