Today's Videogamers = Future Bodybuilders?
We are not born equals when it comes to physical fitness, and I can't help but feel jealous whenever I hear those stories of people who neglected their bodies for all their lifes, suddenly wake up and get in shape within months.
For some of us, exercise is a delicate balance between pain and gain. There are people who can work out daily, there are others who have to take great care not to break something in their body each and every time. |
It's probably the least dangerous exercise in the world and it works!
More power to you both, but it's not an option for everyone.
Personally, I merely have minor scoliosis, flat feet, some cervicale and ankle dislocation (probably not the right word, I mean the articulations jump a little and can get stuck), but even just that is enough to make a long walk more stressful to my body than a hour at the gym lifting weights, as the latter is a more controlled environment ; and don't take this as me being a gym-fan and a walk-hater, I love walking and can't do it as much as I wish I could ; and there are numerous people with much bigger problems than me out there.
There's the argument that almost everyone can swim (as being in the water puts nearly no stress on the body), but you have to live near a swimming pool that is open at hours you can manage with work and so on. Then there's different allergies to the amount of junk they throw in public pools.

About two years ago I found myself weighing in at 260 pounds, and I am only 5'7". With my second child on the way, I decided some things needed to change if I wanted see my kids actually grow up.
I have now lost nearly 100 pounds, run 20-30 miles a week, weight lift 3 days a week, and go to spin class 4 days a week. I have leveled up!
Make a man a fire and keep him warm for the day, SET a man on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life.

The biggest hurdle to exercise is opportunity.
Currently I am lucky and work at a University, so there is a sports centre next door. Prior to working here I was a consultant and spent large amounts of time driving all over the shop. Needless to say I am in a lot better shape today than back then.

You don't need a gym, it's just nice to have. I personally don't go to the Gym because they're very expensive and I thought it was cheaper to just buy a few bits of equipment for myself. Hand weights and a Running machine basically (For when it's raining outside, which may just kill my mood)
Though you can easily get fit jogging on the spot for half an hour a day. Do you watch TV for half an hour a day? Do it while jogging on the spot. There. Done! You won't get super fit this way, but you will get noticeably healthier! It's worth the effort, recently I've got a bit of a bounce in my step as I just feel lighter and more full of energy. It's a great feeling.
If you want to take it further there's plenty on the internet of how to do exercises without owning a single piece of exercise equipment. Jumping Jacks, Squats, Crunches, it's all there! I got a really simple exercise routine in the morning that only takes ten minutes but it's a good way to start the day. 10 Squats, 10 Push Ups (Use your knees if you can't do full ones), 10 Crunches (Sit ups are bad for your back) 20 Jumping jacks. One minute rest then repeat. Nearly anyone can do that three times and if you stretch a bit once you're done you'll be good to go for the rest of the day.
Yes if your body is completely against even the notion of moving without getting injured there's not much you can do, but for everyone else there's no excuse if they've got the inclination. Get yourself motivated somehow and give it a go!
I'd love to do martial arts but I live in rural Wales and I've just been lazy in finding a place that does it. Maybe once I get rid of my belly I'll look into it more!
I don't believe joining a gym is necessity to lose weight/become fit.
What I think is important, and the article points out, is that avid gamers who are focused and dedicated to playing games can channel that focus, energy, and dedication into being healthier; be it losing 30lbs of fat and/or gaining 45lbs of muscle.

If someone wants to work out, then good for them, but to somehow equate a drive in doing that with a completely different drive to take part in a totally different activity is to demonstrate a lack of understanding of both.

It's been my (personal) experience that people who've gone from non-fit to fit do have a bit of smugness about them. The whole "Well, I was able to do it so you should be able to do it" mentality. It's kind of a like an "I'm better than you" attitude.
Just because you're more physically fit doesn't make you a better person.
Now granted you can't tell anything about the people featured in the article, only what you see in the picture, which doesn't really mean much to begin with - but that was the first impression that I had gotten. The people could be extremely nice or mean as pancakes.
Either way, to me, all the article says (proves?) is that gamers have a mindset that has synergy with working out.
Bottom line - anyone who is determined enough can do whatever they set their mind to, and to me, that's not news.
And I'll leave you with: "Why have a 6-pack when you can have a keg?"

That's smart.
On a more serious note, I'm sat here eating a bacon (doot de doo..) and mushroom omlette at 4:30am thinking about starting a proper fitness plan for the near future so I can try and fit into something like this. Vanity + Gamer + Wanting to dress steampunk/victorian-y = A drive for fitness.
