Discussion: Player Base Spotlight: Kaison Corp Medical Center

Let's face it: heroes and villains are going to end up in the hospital. It's rough in the Rogue Isles and Paragon City, and super-powered crusaders and evildoers are going to get bruised, banged up, and sooner-or-later find themselves in need of medical care. The problem is, aside from the medi-porters, regular hospitals just aren't equipped to handle the all the needs of super-powered patients.
Enter the Kaison Corporation medical facility. Located in the Rogue Isles, this multistory medical center specializes in treatment for heroes and villains alike. This state-of-the-art medical care and rehabilitation complex has been designed expressly with the super-powered community in mind.

The brainchild of Dechs Kaison, no expense was spared in the construction of this medical megastructure. To build this facility, Dechs Kaison put up a bid for the construction among some of the most reputable and experienced base-builders in City of Heroes Freedomâ„¢. The contract (which ran into the hundreds of millions of inf) was won by DemonHunter-1 and War Base, who designed the layout. We were cordially invited to tour this player-made medical treatment center at its grand opening on the Virtue server.

Entering through the main doors, it's apparent that this facility is meant to evoke a clean-yet-welcoming atmosphere, sterile as one would expect of a hospital, but not cold. Large red crosses are tiled above doorways, comfortable black leather couches line the waiting room, and a giant painting of what might be a loosely-sketched beach hangs across from the front desk. The area is bright, with blue floors and off-white walls. Around the corner you can see into the medical center's garage, where a specialized rapid response vehicle sits waiting.

Down a short flight of steps from the lobby, the building opens up into the main hallway where each of the smaller, specialized sections of the facility are situated. There's a fully-stocked pharmacy, private treatment rooms, and an examination area with rows of hospital beds. Glass panes and tall, potted ferns are the decor here; giving the place a sense of understated liveliness. It definitely feels like the type of place you would feel comfortable recovering in after the latest bout with a giant monster or invading army from another world.

The rehabilitation areas themselves, located on the higher floors of the facility, are a real highlight. There's a full-size sparring ring (complete with spectator stands), an exercise room with the latest strength-building equipment, and (my personal favorite area) a dance floor with a DJ platform and Huge-sized speakers.

Back on the ground floor, a room off to the side held a monolithic machine that easily stretched to the complex's ceiling. I questioned Kaison about its purpose; the machine was described in layman's terms as, "A really powerful microscope," presumably for analysis of conditions that even the high-powered scanners hospitals utilize today are incapable of seeing at the most minute level.

Dechs was gracious enough to allow us a view of his personal office for this tour; it's a wood-paneled, classy room dotted with plants and hanging cases of vintage weaponry. I was assured that the majority of these were collectors' pieces--and those that weren't were strictly for security. An automated security turret outside the door was definitely the latter.

With a facility this advanced and expansive, one would expect that to go in for medical care was to come out missing an arm and a leg--and not from surgery. While we weren't given quotes on how much treatment would cost, Dechs Kaison may be the most forward-thinking owner of a private hospital facility, or at least an extremely pragmatic man: the Kaison Corporation medical facility has, built-in, its own bank, allowing patients to take out a loan or a policy directly from the facility. For security reasons we were unable to take photos of this area, however it was nothing if not impressive to see a multi-windowed bank within a hospital. This section was tucked away in the back of the facility, and understandably so--it might be the only thing within the Kaison Corp medical center that isn't conductive to making patients feel better.

The Kaison Corp medical facilities are now open in the Rogue Isles.

Great looking base.

This is an example of how bases could be if they had been geared more towards 'Functional Meeting Areas', and not 'Homemade Raid Instances' when they were first introduced.

Now comes the big question. Is this going to be a continuing thing, and if so, how do we get our bases featured?

((Also, first!! :P ))

Yeah, I'm gonna have to chime in here. First, lovely base. Mad props for that. But, and I'm just spitballing here, perhaps it would have been a better idea for you to fix the base emblem bug BEFORE you ran a story about how great bases are? Just a thought.

I have to say I'm puzzled by this feature on the forums to be honest. bases have been neglected for years... and had things broken with the release of i21... I have to wonder why do a spotlight on a base? I mean the base itself looks great... but what's the point when there's so much wrong with bases and they have been left to rot for years. Unless of course you're planning to finally breathe some new life into them... >_> pretty please?

They've done player base spotlights before. Not frequently, but on occasion they do (I can think of 1-2 others, I think at least one other earlier this year.)

As for why do it... why not? It looks interesting, and may give others ideas.

First thing's first: Thanks, Beastyle, for the wonderful write up. It's pretty cool to see my base featured here on the forums.

Each designer was paid one billion influence for their work, and I just signed another contract for another five hundred million, because there's far more work to be done before I'm finished.

Also, since I've seen it asked: Yes, the party and the screenshots were taken before the base emblem bug showed up.

If anyone wants to see a few more screenshots, I'd direct you to here and here, for my quick writeup of the base.

Great looking base, and a hell of a concept as well! For all that is said about bases requiring a multitude of fixes, I am continuously astounded by what some of our players can do as designers.

Awesome base! How were you able to do multi-level rooms? Is it a bug?

I pulled the trigger. That's right, I did it, in Warburg, with the pistol. - Mista Chains

Everyone know the Tank Archetype get the most drops of all the types. This is because of their "Death Dealing" powers. I call it the front line bonus...but you'll never read this in the wiki - "Rx10"

Desks are the answer. In the case of Dechs' base, we mostly used the grey counters or white counters as flooring and walls. They're located in the base editor under the "Desks" tab.

If you head on over to the Base Construction board, you'll find many threads that detail some of the tricks of the trade used to create bases like the one that Dechs now has. Most people there are helpful in teaching new builders how to create their own bases, and after that, it's just a matter of experience and patience to learn what works and what doesn't.

Hey Beastyle ... did you know we have a Base Building Forum? It's over here in case you've never been there before ...

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...

Yeah this would be a lot more interesting if it didn't take a million years to stack desks to make multi level rooms like that. I refuse to do anything fancy with the base builder anymore until they get things fixed. Like the ability to just raise and lower the level of an object with a slider.

Congratz Dechs on getting your base shown here. Hey ATG it doesn't take long(of course depending on size of the room) to make multi-level rooms anymore. =)

Doesn't take long is pretty subjective. Just the fact that I have to fill a room with desks is unreasonable to me.
