Magical Girl SG?

You don't see a connection between the Tokusatsu Genre and the Magical Girl Genre?

The main thing that makes a Tokusatsu TV Show is transforming heroes. Magical Girls are normal girls who transform into heroes.

Allow me to show ya what I mean:
Magical Girl Sequence:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsX0VHMw_Z8

Tokusatsu Sequence:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZusMKWo_8Y

Transforming Heroes is one of four things I look at when determining if a show is Tokusatsu or Not. The others are:
New 'bad guy' to fight every episode (except two or more parters) and an evil organization that sends them after the good guys.

Large robots and/or monsters doing battle.

Usage of what could be considered too much special effects. Tokusatsu is Japanese for Special Effects after all.

Magical Girl Animes tend to have two of the four (Episodic Badguy and Evil Organization. Transforming Heroes). The exception to this is the live action Sailor Moon series, which at a high usage of special affects as well. If a show or genre has two or more of the four things I look for, then I consider it Tokusatsu.

Lone, the type of character you're referring to is a Guardian/Knight, Jessie has a listing of the ones that are available. (Right now most of them.) They're each coordinate with a planet and some personality traits attributed to said planet. I used this as a guide for picking Saturn for mine:

Tokusatsu refers to live action special erffect shows. Live action magical girl shows are rare.

'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.

Well known Tokusatsu series have had featured cartoons, manga and animes, there are even Tokusatsu animes and manga not connected to well established Tokusatsu series. Tokusatsu heroes are even often parodied in Anime and Manga. A well known Tokusatsu TV series, Kamen Rider, was based off the manga Skullman. Like Magical Girl shows, Tokusatsu isn't limited to strictly one type of show and can be live action, manga or anime.

On a side note:
I'm torn between Sun, Mercury or Mars.

If you research the term, you'll find that is not the case.

Just like if you looked at the term Magical Girl it says it's only Anime and Manga, but there are Magical Girl Live Action shows as well.

We're digressing. Tokusatsu is not defined by any of the four things you mentioned earlier except for special effects. The Magical Girl genre does not "fall under" tokusatsu; there are merely occasional points of convergence.

I think it'd be best to treat this in true comic-book fashion: crossovers, or even a joint title (like Superman-Batman) while still keeping to their own. Nothing prevents us from interacting with people outside the SG, after all!

The 'Knight' characters are often more closely related to the Tokusatsu genre, so I wouldn't mind in that particular fashion. The only thing that I'm kinda buckling down on is that the nature has to be magical, but the style of the character or whatever the case is up to the person that is controlling that character. I'm certainly fine with a Kamen Rider type character taking on the role of a knight so long as he transforms magically rather with some space tech or something since the whole story behind the Zodiac Saints is a magical tale.

So yes, I'm fine with you joining Lone.

Well...it seems I was misunderstood WHY I brought up Tokusatsu.

I noticed a lot of similarities between the Tokusatsu Genre and the Magical Girl Genre, which lead me to watching a view animes and eventually my interest in your SG idea. I wasn't asking to use a Kamen Rider in the SG as I already have an SG I lead personally for that sort of thing.

The type of character I was thinking of using was someone like Tuxedo Mask. A mysterious masked man who aids the team of girls but not even they know his true identity or why he does it, at least not at first.

Also, there are a few Magic themed Tokusatsu characters. Most recent I can think of is the Mahou Sentai Magiranger team and the Kamen Riders from the Kamen Rider Hibiki series, but that's going off topic a bit.

A little sample idea for my character, who I hope shall be the Knight of Saturn. Set in a timeline before she gained her powers; an example of her personality and life before magic enters into it.

"Chloe Chase from Channel 5's Hardline; reporting live on the scene of yet another vicious crime in downtown King's Row. It appears that a fight has broken out between the Skulls and the local Circle of Throns sect, and in the resulting display of carnage six innocent people lost the-"

Karen turned off the TV, a disgusted expression on her face. They reported the crime in King's Row like it was a rare event; some sheltered, isolated incident that only happened every month or so. In truth, it happened every day, ever hour. If she turned off the nearby box fan sitting in the window of her studio apartment, she could probably sit and listen to it happening. She didn't. She had in the past; and it only depressed her.

Her apartment was small, and it echoed with many noises. The whir of the fan desperately trying to cool an overheated room, the steady drip of a leaky roof dirzzling into a half-full saucepan, and the creak of floorboards under Karen's impressive frame. She was a strong girl, well muscled and tone. She had always been tall, but it was living on her own that had made her strong.

King's Row was a lot different from Kansas. The streets were dangerous, not just from petty groups like the Skulls, but the real lunatics like the Circle and the Lost. It had become all too evident early on that if she was going to make a life for herself, she had to toughen up, and she had to drop her farmer daughter ways. Some transitions were easy; for the first year of her life in King's she didn't have enough for a TV, and weightlifting had made for a decent substitute. Some transitions were hard; like remembering to lock, double lock, and deadbolt the door every single night. When you came from a place where every front door was unlocked and every floor mat said "Welcome," doing otherwise felt like abandoning an innocence that was difficult to give up.

But she had been in the city for years now, and she had given up a lot. Only a girl when she made the transition, Karen was now a woman just shy of twenty-two, and the stout but naive farmgirl had fully transformed into a hardened city dweller.

She handled the transition better than some. She was always practical. Never the type to dress up pretty and waste money on cosmetic priviledges like jewelry, she handled finances with as much ease as she handled toughening her body: with emotionless focus.

Dour, steel-jawed, the young woman rose from her bed, a hand lightly gripping a twenty-pound dumbell within its fingers. It was morning, and it was time for her morning regiment. Garbed in a tight fitting black tank top and sweats, the muscular specimen hit to her routine with startling energy. A dozen crunches. Two dozen laterals. Three dozen curls. Preceeded by fifty push-ups to warm up, and followed by seventy five push-ups to cool down. By the end her breathing was ragged, her shoulder-length black hair was hanging frayed and wet, and her pale white skin was glazed in a faint aura of sweat.

A shower later, and it was off to work. Karen threw on her trench as she left her tiny apartment; making sure to lock it up to protect what little possessions she owned. A sigh went through the woman as she walked through the streets of King's Row. Junkies. Dealers. She ignored them and moved on. She felt sick to her stomach every time she had to switch sides on the road to avoid the homeless, just in CASE they might be Lost. The city was worse than ever; and it showed no sign of getting better.

Karen stepped into the soul kitchen, the smell of generic processed meats striking her senses almost immediately. The stuff was barely above cat food, but beggers couldn't be choosers. As she went to the back of the kitchen to begin cleaning dishes, she spared one last glance at the crowd getting their daily meals. Weak, victimized, desperate. If she could do something more to help she would; but even a thousand push-ups wouldn't make you a superhero. For that, something magical would have to enter her life.

But after the transition to King's Row from Kansas, Karen stopped believing in magic a long, long time ago.

I'd like to take the Knight of Mercury, seems like he'll be the more interesting one. Not sure what to do with him exactly though, will work on his background for now.

Two questions while I'm working on my character:

Is there a set naming convention? Cute Saint, Saint x Saint, etc?

And:

Can I start as a Dark Magical Girl?

I went with "Cute Saint Sage" cause jessie's is cute saint dominique

I might turn Solaria's old scrapper build into Cute Saint Melody, but only if everyone else is going with a theme name.

I'm having a difficult time naming my Knight of Mercury, any suggestions?

I ended up making a new character after all - Cute Saint Cindy claims Leo!

I bought street justice today, which is my planned set for Saturn's Knight. I'm busy with moving until Sunday though, so I probably won't get to roll her until then. I want to hear the final word on naming conventions anyway; and maybe some background about the general story.

It also sounds like the group is evolving as characters that are free to level and do as they please; no scheduled day, which I'm finding works a lot better with my sometimes hectic schedule.

My guy is done.

Star Knight Mercury (yep...this is what happens when my mind goes on strike)
Blaster: Psychic and Mental Manipulation

I chose the powers cause they seemed to be more fitting since the main aspect of Mercury is Knowledge.

Is there a SG started yet for it? I ask because I notice we kinda...took the idea and ran with it, a lot of people rolled up before Jessie gave the okay in the boards with the naming situation.

Been watching this thread with some interest as a former Sushi Schoolgirl Squad member. Although the Sushi's were originally spawned for comedy purposes and the sheer hyper-kintec madness of j-pop culture sterotypes running around interacting with the CoX universe; the kernal of this group does sound like a much more serious homage to the magical girl trope.

And I'm interested. I do have a concept for a character- either broadsword or dual blades along the line of the tarot card Justice (which is the card associated with Libra) that I think would work but I'm unsure if she would better as a Cute Saint Libra or Star Knight Venus. I know the sword thing kinda leans me towards a Star Knight but what do you all think?

And Woot, love your comic!

Some pictures of the characters I made right quick-

Cute Saint Libra! (Dual Swords / Willpower Scrapper)

Her Twin Swords of Justice! (I may want to tone down the sparkles a bit though)

Cute Saint Flower Burst!

Cute Saint is Cute!

Star Knight Venus! (Katana / Electric Armor Brute)

Star Sword of Justice!

Again may want to tweak the outfit...

I really like the cyborg jaw, wings combo here though...

AND Finally an old pic I found of the Sushi's cornering Ascendant and Comrade Smersh in ICON...

This idea would appear to have gone DoA, until I hear a little more from Jessie.

I'm willing to try and pick up the pieces a little bit, though? Anyone interested still?

I am very much still interested and would be glad to help out in anyway that I can to get this off the ground. Cute Saint Lily is ready to go!

Alright, well, let's give Jessie a day or two more, but I saw him running Lambda yesterday, so we know the computer isn't broke or anything. I have an idea or two for an origin story, but as I am pretty busy myself, I would personally like to avoid a very specific naming pattern. if we do this where everyone has to specifically be a planet or constellation, we are kind of boxed in the first time 3 people leave and 3 more want to join.

I think it would be kind of cool if we crossed over some comic elements into this. I am sort of thinking that a bunch of misfits happen to have powers and such that make them suited to be magical girls... but secretly it's not all by chance, and the mysterious circumstances that led to their powers in the first place is the result of destiny as each is a reincarnation of a member of a fairy court.

the court was situated on avalon, but died out long ago. all of the stuff with the well of the furies however and incarnates has revived their dead spirits. so ultimately magical like with incarnates, but allowing for different origins anyway.

because it's 1 thing to do a magical girl supergroup, it is a whole other thing to get it to fit with lore.
