Game Locking at Contacts

I think I've read something about this, but now I can't find it.

The game freezes up every time I open the contact window.

I had the same issue for all Rogues/Villains that had The Television as a contact. I would crash as soon as contacts tab was opened.
This was on an ATI 5870

For some odd reason, lowering water effects(environment reflections) to the 1st or 2nd setting fixed it for me (starting in safe mode). Rolling ATI drivers back to 10.9 also worked for me then.
Im assuming you're on an ATI card. From memory this was sorted out in a later driver release. (I had this issue back in Dec 2010)

Have you tried updating to the current 11.9 drivers ?

I'm actually using a GT 430 now, but I am going to try rolling back to a slightly older driver that I've seen people mentioning. Also, I'm going to attempt lowering the water.

Ok, so, I launched in Safe Mode and everything worked fine. I could open and close contact windows, open and close my settings boxes, etc.

When I started in regular mode, and went to drop my settings down out of the advanced, the game stopped responding.

So, I ask: how am I going to get my settings reduced when the game freezes up when I try to lower the settings?

"I see your words..." ~The most menacing thing a forumite could say

Change the graphics settings while Safe Mode is enabled.

Posted

While in Safe Mode, the graphics are already set to a reduced rate. They cannot be reduced any further than they already are; however, since those settings cannot be altered, when switching back to non-Safe Mode, the settings revert to where they already were.

Meaning, no change can be affected by me.

See the dilemma?

LJ, what Tex is saying is that while you are in Safe Mode, set the graphics options as you want them, click Apply, then quit the game and start in non-Safe Mode. The changes you made in Safe Mode should stick.

My recommendation is always to Start in Safe Mode, make one change, launch in Normal mode. Does it work right? Okay. Start in Safe Mode. Make that first change and another change, launch in Normal mode. Does it work right? Rinse, repeat as necessary. If it gets to a setting that causes it not to work right, go back into Safe Mode and make the changes except for that one. Make it either a less drastic change (From Low to Medium instead of from Low to Very High) or leave it at the reduced setting and try changing a different setting instead.

Yes, that's a lot more steps, but it lets you see exactly which setting is causing your problems. Armed with that knowledge you may be able to find a better solution to the problem or know that it just won't handle that setting.

For example, I leave Ambient Occlusion set to Off since I don't like what it does to my framerates. For a while AO wasn't playing nicely at all with one of the other settings (FSAA I think, could have been AF) and you could select one or the other but selecting both was causing major issues. Even with that fixed AO is still a resource hog, so I'd rather leave it Off and have better framerates.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

So, yeah. Now the game stops responding even in Safe Mode.

It would be helpful for you to run coh helper again and post your results.

Doing a quick model search of your HP might have given us a clue.

GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 is the MB chipset. If I recall correctly, this onboard video is very old and is not stable on the more recent Nvidia graphics drivers. I'll have to dig up the forum posts, because I don't recall which drivers you need but I do remember you need a very old driver.

Edit: here we go. seach fu....use 197.45 drivers. Later drivers seem to have issues with CoH.

197.45 drivers are not compatible with a GT 430 according to Nvidia.

He was using an 8400 GS previously, not the onboard video chipset.

Considering all of the Unknown and Unknonwn (2147483647) entries, I'd say it's possibly not setting the registry entries correctly.

Hrmm.... That didn't help.

My next suggestion is uninstalling and re-installing your graphics drivers.

This outline should give you the details... Although, ignore the part about ATi and Catalyst. That was for another poster. Look for the nVidia stuff (that I am not familiar with so I can't give you better details).

Try not to skip the Driver Sweeper (or your program of choice) steps.

Well, looking over all of the info, something isn't adding up.

Looking over the machine's info over at HP, onboard video is the default option. GT 430 isn't much of an upgrade over a 520 or 8400. 430 GT is a pretty awful card. Since were trying to establish if this thing even works, I would suggest pulling out the video card and running off the onboard graphics. Purely for diagnostic purposes of course!

Lets see how it runs on the older drivers I suggested with onboard video. If that fails, I am almost to the point of suggesting backing up all your data and re-installing windows.
