GameRadar's announcement of CoH:Freedom
It seems that your clarification was either deleted or needs approval before seeing it because all I'm seeing is your reply to the idiotic DCUO comment.
That article is so full of fail, it's astounding. Did the OP not do ANY homework before writing it?

Wow that was horrible. 10 seconds of research and 30 seconds of typing is what passes for journalism these days.
Wow. Someone from Paragon PR needs to talk to these guys ASAP lest we get nerdrage about how the article promised stuff that new players won't find in the game.
My guides:Dark Melee/Dark Armor/Soul Mastery, Illusion Control/Kinetics/Primal Forces Mastery, Electric Armor
"Dark Armor is a complete waste as a tanking set."
Can you expect any less fail from Future? :\
Sam: "My mind is a swirling miasma of scintillating thoughts and turgid ideas."
Max: "Me too."
Stuff
Ahh, your comment finally showed up. Hit all the pertinent points. Although you said Premiums have to apply a GR code to get alignment, which is not true; the alignment system can be purchased separately on the market. You also said GR zones are blocked unless you apply a GR code or are VIP, which is also not true; access to Praetoria can also be purchased separately on the market.

And...wow. That IS fail.
Hell, if that's the standard for net-journalism, I want me some of that job; I can get paid for writing stuff that will be way better than average, if that's anything to go by.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

...which is why Paragon Studios' PR department is not entirely to blame when players come in and expect everything to be free. Another part of the equation is that some people with short attention spans will hear what they want to hear and not bother to track down obscure information sources like the City of Heroes website to find things out for themselves.

And holy cow was it poorly written. So much so that I had to go in and clarify the stuff that the writer got just outright wrong. Here's the article:

- It's not a total free to play system, it's a hybrid model. There's three types of accounts: Free (essentially an unlimited time trial account with all the other former restrictions in place), Premium (A free account with items purchased, they can unlock various features with more items spent and/or time subscribed), and VIP (The subscription accounts, which are still being used.) |
- Free and Premium players cannot access the alignment system and are restricted to Hero or Villain (as opposed to the other 6 that VIP can access) Premium players with a Going Rogue key tied into their account will have access to the alignment system. VIPs get this as part of the subscription. |
Free players cannot access the alignment system. Premium players can access the alignment system with a purchase (owning Going Rogue, finding a retail copy of Going Rogue, or purchasing the Alignment System unlock). VIP players get access as long as they are subscribed, and if they revert to Premium status will have it as long as they have unlocked it (owning Going Rogue, finding a retail copy of Going Rogue, or purchasing the Alignment System unlock).
- Archetypes are not totally unrestricted. Masterminds, Controllers, and the "Epic" archetypes for heroes and Villains are blocked. Premiums with a certain amount of money spent and/or subscription time can get Controllers and masterminds unlocked, but the Epic Archetypes must be purchased. VIPs get this as part of the subscription. |
- All pre-Going Rogue zones are accessible. Praetorea zones are blocked unless you have Going Rogue or a VIP account. The new Zone, First Ward is purchasable separately and is part of the VIP subscription. |
VIP players can start as a Praetorian and have access to First Ward contacts as a part of their subscription. After their subscription ends, they will either have to have Going Rogue applied to their account or purchase the "Start a Praetorian" unlock. In addition, former VIP players will have to unlock the First Ward contacts if they wish to continue to do those missions after their subscription ends.
- The new end game content the Incarnate System, which allows players to advance to a power level beyond basic levels, Is at current restricted to VIP accounts only. Non subscribers will not be able to access it at all. |
- Should a VIP account no longer be subscribed to and reduces to premium, any items actively purchased or unlocked will remain accessible. Anything not done so will be greyed out and cannot be accessed until the subscription is renewed. |

Woah there before the pitchforks and torches come out! Admittadely, What I put down was not complete, neither was it outright wrong. What I put down is accurate for people just starting or just returning, which is for who I directed it towards. That way they don't get the idea that everything is open to them from the start when it really isn't.
If that's what passes for journalism today ...
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

No matter what the words stated the trailer included does nothing to suggest it's incorrect.
Play for free, forever is the tagline. The trailer pretty much says the game is F2P.

Anyone can enter Praetoria. Anyone can enter First Ward. Only those that have unlocked "Starting a Praetorian" (VIP, Going Rogue, or specific purchase) can start in Praetoria. Only those that have unlocked the First Ward contacts (VIP or specific purchase) can access those missions. You also neglected to say that Controllers and Masterminds could be purchased before the reward tier if you weren't a VIP.
If you expect the reporter to do their homework, then so should you.
