Ill/Time Build Review

So with the new mids out I thought I'd try to get something started for Illusion/Time. Here is what I have so far:

This is a end game PVE build (no PVP). The powers are the ones I want and in the order I'd like as well. This is what I've been able to accomplish so far, but I can tell it needs some tweaking:

Perma PA, Hasten, Chrono Shift
I think I'm at 40.93% S/L defense and 40.23% melee defense (I plan to be in melee range)
I've done my best on recovery as this is definitely going to be an end hog. I'll probably go for the end reducing alpha to help with endurance as well.
Power Boost is up whenever I need to refresh Far Sight.

Please let me know where you see some needed tweaking.

You're build looks pretty good. I'm not going to try to poke holes in you're choice of sets too much because IO's are not my specialty, but I made a few observations.

First is you're reliance on melee. Illusion really wants to be at a range. You get a better view of the battlefield, and your Phantom Army and Phantasm are keep on a better leash making them control the battlefield better and have less chance of running off. With all the tools Illusion has available to it, it never has to enter melee, and if somehow it's in melee flash can get you out. The only Time power that wants you in melee is Time's Juncture, which honestly I think is a skippable power, it's good, but I'm not going to go into melee just to use it. Just my 2 inf though.

Second, if you are looking for more recovery, you can get a little more out of stamina by four slotting performance shifter in it(EndMod, Acc/EndMod, Rechrg/EndMod, Chance for +End), because every little bit counts. You could also save some end by replacing maneuvers with combat jumping, which can also slot a lotg.

If you're looking to softcap defense, look at mace mastery if you don't mind going darkside. It has a defense shield, a blast that gives you more -res and -def, and an AoE blast that gives you some extra control with a little knockdown. It's a great set.

One final thing, I think you're slotting for Slowed Response is off, it doesn't need more defdebuff, with all you're acc and +tohit you'll never miss anyways, what it does need is recharge, you want to be able to use that ability as often as possible so you and your phantom army can get as much out of that -res as possible, and so that proc triggers more often.

I think you are right about the melee. Even now I find myself staying at range more than melee as I level. I'll keep Tim'e Juncture for when I am in melee, but I feel like I'll be at range most of the time.

On Slowed Response, does the Resistance Debuff from the power stack on itself? Looking at it I can change the slots to be the Achilles Heel proc and 3 Undermined Defense for a boost of 1.8% Max end, 2% damage buff bonuses, and near cap recharge.

Also, can you run combat jumping and hover at the same time, if so I may change maneuvers to that, if not I'll keep it.

From a practical standpoint I find myself going into melee to take advantage of my aura. Now mind you I'm teamed with a very capable tank that leaves me relatively aggro free. While I'd agree that there are reasons Illusion plays more ranged there are things like the aoe heal and powers like flash that require you to be in melee at least for a time. I find me waiting to ensure the tank has aggro, cast PA, then Distortion Field then run in. It's safer than you'd think on the surface, and this is all before spectral terror, farsight, slowed response which will all make it even safer. YMMV

Just a couple of little things I noticed:

In Baz Gaze, why use the proc? Isn't it kind of useless when a foe is held? You would do better providing better enhancement for the power itself by using one of the other Baz Gaze IOs.

If you are at level 50 and you can possibly afford it, get 5 of the Coercive Persuasion set in Deceive. The proc is wonderful. Just leave out the pure Confuse one. That also frees up a 6.25% Recharge slot from the "rule of 5."

Fly is a Flight Speed cap without any Flight speed enhancement. That Flight Speed should be changed to EndRdx or a Zephyr -knockback.

At level 50, you can save a slot in Phantasm by using 4 Expediant Reinforcement (all the ones with Damage) and an Acc/Dam Hami-O. You could also replace the Acc/Dam in Blind with a Hami-O.

And the biggest problem I see -- no fast single target blast from the APP. Primal's Blast is OK, but I'm not all that impressed with Primal for an Illusion Controller. I prefer Fire or Ice. In any event, getting an attack chain of Blind-SW-Blast-SW will hugely increase your overall damage because by killing single targets faster, you will prevent heal-back from the Illusory Damage. See my Ill/Rad guide for an explanation.

I also really like the chance for build up proc in SW, but YMMV.

One thing to keep in mind for defense stackers... the same way power boost affects Farsight... also works for Group Invisibility. And while Group Invisibility's defense buff isn't nearly as potent, it makes for another 5% ish more defense stacked on top of Farsight making it pretty easy to soft cap just about anything and everything if you really want to. So make sure you PB, Farsight and then GI

So I did some more tweaking and I like what I was able to do.

Here's what I changed:
1. Fixed the Basilisk's Gaze slotting, I didn't mean to have the proc in those.
2. Spec Wounds, Blind, and Phantasm all got a HO dam/acc enhancement for better values
3. Blind also got a standard damage IO to round out it's damage.
4. I pulled a slot from Time's Juncture and Conserve Power and put them in GI and Hover for defense.
5. Changed slotting in Slowed Response for a defense set.

Here's what lost in doing this:
1. About 2 seconds in recharge in Slowed Response (the resistance debuff is still perma)
2. A little bit of end redux in Time's Juncture (which is almost evened out perfectly by the end redux gained in Hover)

Here's what I gained in it's place:
1. 20% more regen
2. More HP
3. Most importantly, if I use PB then Farsight and GI I am at S/L defense softcap now. I think I was around 5% off before.

With this I still maintain all the important perma abilities (SC, PA, Hasten) and gain some better damage/accuracy in key powers and better healing in Temp Mending.

I may swap to a purple set in Deceive when I hit 50, but for now I'll leave it as is to know what to shop for at lvl 30 (when I start building the first sets as I level).

This is my build, I definitely agree that this combination of powers tends to lean towards a ranged playstyle.

My main points were soft-capping ranged def 46%, and getting perma Hasten, PA, CS, without going spiritual cause I wanted cardiac as this combo is end heavy. I worked out to 225% rech or so, I forget the total there is some kind of bug in Mids that breaks my rech total when I open the build.

I also just really like to have fireball so I went fireball over going a route that would net me Powerboost. I don't really see the need since like I said this combo very ranged. I also will be going clarion so I will not be needing IW for mez protection.

<Sigh> You know, folks, that you really, really don't have to soft-cap an Illusion Controller. Let PA and Phanty draw the aggro, stay invisible and focus on taking out single targets with the fast Blind-SW-Blast-SW attack chain, and you don't have to worry about any defense. Fireball is great . . . as long as PA have aggro first. But Fireblast is far more important.

Ill/Time (at least in my experience so far) is mixed, not just ranged. You can get pretty decent defense numbers with just foresight and something like maneuvers. If end is such an issue for you why not go for recovery and +end in the build that way you can also go spiritual. I agree with Local on softcapping here. You have so many tools to help you with aggro on an Illusion controller, (that's kind of the point of illusion) that you should be fine without sacrificing rech/end/recovery.

Not going to comment much on the build as Set Builds aren't really my thing, but one thing to note : The more you slot Spectral Terrors Fear effect the longer things will run away from it (Spectral has two powers with different types of Fear "Stand and Quake", called Terrorized, and "Run away", called Afraid)

You don't want to boost the Afraid effect if possible.

Also note that ST has a 15% ToHit debuff per power, which will stack with Times one, so Softcap really isn't that necessary.

Question on PA. Is there a trick to get them to attack when you approach a new mob. I'm level 25 now and it seems like 90% of the time, when I go to a new mob, they wont attack until I'm in melee range first. This isn't an issue if I am invis and have T Juncture off, but I'd rather not turn that on and off on each mob set.

I may reevaluate the S/L defense. I only re slotted for it because I was so close after going for recharge and barely sacrificed anything for it. Power Boosted Farsight and GI gets me near softcap on it's own. I'd think about dropping Primal Forces for Ice or Fire for more damage too, if I can figure out the PA thing above.

I do agree that you don't have to softcap on illusion but it is so easy on a ill/time, with 4 epic pool choices to make it easy to do so.

All you need is Farsight, Combat Jumping, and either Ice, Earth or Mace epics and you will be pretty close to 40 on S/L. You can also go with primal epic for power boost and be pretty close to all.

Then throw in Maneuvers and group invisibility and you are there, no extra IO set bonus toward defense really needed, but steadfast +3 can be slotted in a few to push you up and over 45%.

That leaves you with lots of room to slot for recharge and time lets you go overboard with it to pair up with Illusions easy slotting choices for recharge.

I am still trying to decide if I want power boost (lots of extra Clicks) but has more layers of survival-ability then Ice (has single target without KB and ice storm)

But if you are constantly running out of end or having end issues, what good is softcapping? You have more of a job to do than not getting hit. I don't even think powerboost is all that important here either. Between your primary/secondary/epic shield you are plenty safe here. You have a -to hit aura, all kinds of slows, distraction from PA, a good click defensive power, add to that a shield (resist or defensive), you'll be fine that's tons of mitigation. Just a simple understanding of aggro management and you'll be standing the whole time.

To the PA next mob question: I turn off T Juncture, turn on SI and run just past the mob. Once PA has aggro I retoggle TJ and hit them with the slow patch.

I'm seeing more and more value in fire APP and less for Primal now (good discussions). I'm thinking if I go this route to pick Fire Blast, Shield, and Consume. To add slots to the fire powers though it looks like I need to pull slots from ST. The loss in recharge bonus is not a big deal as I can put decimation in blast for the same bonus, but am I losing some necessary control by dropping so many slots from Spooky?

Also, as this change in APP does take me away from S/L cap by a good amount, is there a number that may be too low in defense or is it just that unnecessary. I hate those moments where I get agrro for 2 seconds and insta splat.

Spectral Terror works pretty much out of the box. Even with just an Accuracy IO in there he's effective. He's possibly the best one slot wonder control power going.

What does soft capping have to do with end, where easy to do so? The only end hog powers that you need is your epic shield witch is easy to slot for end redux, you don't really need maneuvers running, but its nice to have as a set mule. Its not like your having to run tough, weave and other toggles to do this.

Farsight (2 defense Io's) + Frozen Armor(2 defense Io's) + CJ (1 Defense IO)= 37% s/l

Throw in a Steadfast +3 in Frozen Armor and some better slotting and your about at 41% very easy to make up with either maneuvers, Group Invisibility or some other set IO's.

Still leaves you plenty of room to slot for recharge and have end redux in your powers.

Good to know and thank you. I'm working on a new build for more recovery and end bonuses right now (with Fire App). I'm using GI instead of SI since it's perma anyway (reducing a toggle end hog), so hopefully that isn't an issue with invis walking into new mobs for PA.

Downside mentioned wanting to go cardiac because they felt the combo was end heavy. Focusing on softcapping is hurting recovery, which I contend is more important that not getting hit because those powers help you from not getting hit in the first place.

It is my contention (and a few others here in the troller forums) that the most important set bonuses for a controller are recharge, +end and recovery.

And yes spectral terror is good out of the box with a single recharge IO or maybe even the psi damage from from Malaise in it. If you are tight on slots just go native on ST.

How about this then. if has perma PA, hasten, and chornoshift with a little extra room for error, plenty of endurance, and still manages to softcap S/L defense with pretty much no effort(If you take a defense shield in you're epic this build almost caps itself.)

Without spiritual it's PA and hasten are slightly less than perma, but even a basic spiritual boost gives it enough recharge. With all the endrdx and recovery in there I don't think cardiac is needed, and I really like the extra heal, slow, and ToHit spiritual provides.

Also to note, I don't like Time's Juncture, I know others do. If you want it you could just drop recall friend and use the slots from Spectral Terror to slot it.
